- Blazing fast 5G speeds are here but they aren't all that useful on the new 5G smartphones. WSJ's Joanna Stern packed up a motor home to see if the connection could power all her connected gadgets, including laptops, printers, Xboxes and camera-equipped doorbells. She explains the confusing world of 5G along the way. Photo illustration: Sharon Shi

RUclips getting real comfortable with the double ads
I know right?, RUclips is being a scumbag in terms of advertisements.
@@Saul_Soto82 They need a revenue. RUclips bring losses for Google all the time
I've had double ads for months now.
Haven't seen ads on YT in years. Get adblock.
@@Fjalll yeah I'm worried that with their developers it won't take them 1 day to make an anti adblocker but they don't do that :) nice Google
Well, would you look at that-when you park in front of a 5G tower you have 5G.
Uh, yes really, I thought she would drive around and test it, stupid idea for a video?
I smelled the clickbait from the intro, 5G in a highway in the desert?
Well you have to have a 5G tower every 500 feet so really you’re always close to one.
Instead of living under a bridge by the river, we'll be fighting for space under 5G poles. I could have a mobile streaming setup and no one would know I'm living the life in a $5000 van
Everyone will know due to your brain cancer
Nah, most probably ADSL Cable or Fiber for home internet
@John Doe source please? I'd like to learn
3g is here still 1mb/s
4g is here still 1mb/s
5g is here still 1mb/s
@Levine Levine Like the US would allow a CCP influenced and Controlled company to install their network lines.
@Levine Levine It's a geopolitical move. What do you expect?

2020 - LTE can stream a 1080p video, 4g can stream a 360p video, 3g can browse the internet, edge no service available
Lol
oh wow lol. we're like ten years away from having that kind of coverage
@@zhaohong1972 what?
@@Arthur-gl4qr Spam bot, report and move on.
Having in mind the rapid growth of 4G implementation, I’d say 5 years away
@@computronium8 note that major parts of the USA do not have 4G.
The issue is today's 5G is still nonstandalone 5G(NSA), real 5G with super low latency is 5G standalone(SA). That's why gaming was laggy. Current 5G still relies on LTE uploads. When standalone 5G launches, you'll see latency improve greatly.
Did it launch already?
When she said her home WiFi is 100mbps
me who gets 1mbps max: Really? You need 5g?
Arijeet Debnath it was 1100 mbps
I have 250mbps WiFi at home and I think it’s slow
3g 4g 5g but still 1mb 😭
@@TeaMHackeRPiratE you can continue with your G, but if the cable, that delivers died to the past can deliver only 1mbps, then what do you want? Hint: you need faster speed delivered to whatever pole you use.
That just speaks of how bad your internet is though...
Because 5G haven't come to upload speed, currently right now 5G is only for download speed.
5G conspirators probably are going to write about how a reporter died lol 😂
This is the most unscientific showcase of anything have seen in my life.
5G: Hit your data cap in record time.
They will slow you down to 4g
Comparing VZW download to the home wifi upload speeds..... Considering you’re in Jersey City and getting 100 upload, likely you’re on Verizon FiOS so you can upgrade to 1000 mbps down and upload for a little more in cost. mmwave uploads currently are between 20 Mbps and 110 Mbps so the fiber would be much better on the upload and pings are 1-5ms.
I would be happy to have consistent 200 mbs through out the coverage area. Super fast in some spots and slow in most of the places do not cut it. The user experience has expectation to build in.
I am still each time amazed at what things wsj is paying you to do in your videos XD
Was waiting for the video from WSJ on 5G testings!!
Sure, you can use 5G instead of a broadband connection at home, but it's going to be CONSIDERABLY more expensive. The cell companies aren't going to give up anything for free. With 5G you could potentially use your entire data limit up in seconds then be subject to obscenely expensive overage charges.
4g is already faster than my home WiFi. I don’t understand why WiFi I can access anywhere is faster than the place I pay money for WiFi to be specifically moved to
There's no need to go outside. Just freekin buy the 5g pole instead
I wonder how much a 5g pole cost at someone home? Parking spot near pole will be hot spot for sure.
In the comparison of the two different speeds one is in upload and the other in download, this can contribute to generate a difference
You are correct
1:23 on the right is download speed and on the left is upload, they aren’t comparable.
Great info and fun to watch too!
The main feature of 5G is not speed, it's close to zero latency.
Oh yeah, it's speed. If it reaches it's potential, the speed would be a 100x that of 4G
Today I was reviewing Verizon 5G plans in my city. In the plan details I noted Verizon was selling 5G labeled plans. However, you were going to get 4G LTE data service. Can anyone explain this?
sub-millimeter band will be fast but I wonder if you want a pole like that near your home. The cell size is gonna be very small and I dont think they will be widely deployed and affordable. Ultimately how fast the access speed is gonna depend on how many concurrent users are using the service.......
Company: How much speed do you need?
Me: Yes 😎
The best part is that she set up a Ring doorbell on the car's sliding door
In London UK I barely get 60-80mbps down 30-40mbps upload from my home broadband. That is relatively fast here. You need a specialist supplier if you want faster speeds than this. Real advantage will be for countries that can jump straight from 4G only connection on their mobiles to 5G in most places, as they won't have to waste money on infrastructure like putting cables in the ground etc
Cables is good idea
5G in the common Sub 6 standard is still only ~100mbs. In New Jersey Verizion FiOS can hit ONE GIGABYTE per second for about $79/month plus TV in first time customers homes.
This is really high quality content.
More of these please!
Watching this on my slow connection, irony
I live in Jersey City as well and have gotten over 100mbps download speed on 4G LTE on my iPhone 11 Pro in most parts of the city.
@NOYOU XD Verizon. The speeds are even faster on my new 12 Pro thanks to the new Qualcomm modems, and sometimes, Verizon Nationwide 5G. However, I noticed that Nationwide 5G isn't much faster than 4G LTE, and Verizon mmWave 5G Ultra Wideband requires an unlimited plan and is not widespread. On 4G LTE on my 12 Pro, I was even able to get over 200mbps.
That music playing during the gaming and vr segment! Someone find out what it is!!!
I live in the centre of a relatively big UK city but fibre isn't available on my street. I was stuck with 10 Mbps down / 1 Mbps Up ADSL. I switched to a 5G home router box, and I'm now getting 300 Mbps down / 30 up. It's a bit pricey at £50/month for unlimited data but so worth it.
And here I am getting 550 mb/s download speeds an 100 mb/s upload in Lisbon, for 60€/month.
A massive state initiative from 2008-2011 to build an incredible fiber optics infrastructure that everyone has to have access to has allowed this to happen. The infrastructure company rents it to multiple ISP's and due to the early investment in fiber optics technology, Portugal became a software/hardware powerhouse when it comes to its fiber optics service.
5g is cool and all, but from what I've seen so far, it won't change my life in the immediate future
Enough to pay half a year of fiber Internet fees here in China. 60EUROS
@@baotutubenbenxiong yes, it's cheaper in China but you don't get the same level of access and it's not universal.
First vanlife esque video I've seen use VR, nice!
I don't really anticipate the need to buy a phone for its ability to pick up 5g anytime soon based on these tests. I'm more focused on improved ram, battery life, storage space, and the camera's capabilities since 5 g will take really a decade or more flesh out all the kinks. Also, I find it very hard to beat Google Fiber, it's basically 5g and it's already here.
🎮
I have 5G home broadband here in London, the one with big huawei wifi router and I live 150 meters from the 5g node. And yes I get faster speeds than standard fibre, however the biggest problem is instability, there all the time these short dips where either speed goes down significantly or the ping is extremely high 100ms +. So what that means in reality is let’s say I’m streaming Netflix or Disney plus in 4k but every five minutes I get this drops in quality to sub hd because of the instability of the 5g. Of course this problem is non-existent on standard broadband or fibre
I still remember happily using a 28 kbps dial-up connection back in the early days.
no one cares
@@pepengpantal1363 you're so sad ..lol

WoW, that's a great price for the speed. I pay $73/month for 30 Mbps (this is in Canada)
@@JJs_playground yeah, India does have cheaper internet compared to the rest of the world but not everyone here can shell out that much.
Here in Nepal $140 for year. (30 MBPS)
@@JJs_playground what!
@@filbao8113 to be clear that is $73 Canadian dollars, so around $55 USD. But ya we, canadians, pay some of the highest internet rates.

I'm in rural area in Atlantida, Honduras and had to get a local carrier because my carrier in the US charges me too much for roaming, and out of curiosity ran a speed test on the app got over 200+ mbps I was blown away. I have been then running more test through out the day, when it's peak hours and gets congested and surprisedly download speeds are around 200+ mpbs. So that leaves me wondering why are these companies advertising 5G when they can't even offer true 4G.
i chose verizon 5g home in houston my apartment is also wired with the ability to get xfinity 2gig upload and download also but that is too expensive
When you compare 5g to optical fiber its like comparing snail to airplane
Comparing top of the line cell reception and installation with her halfassed wifi... (most APs these days can theorectically reach 1300mbit/s)
5G without Huawei is not 5G.....
how much does this van/renovation cost?
I love watching WSJ tech videos

Where can I have this 5 G speed even for my phone? As of now, my Verizon phone can't even handle a phone call without dropping it every 30 seconds. I barely get any bar on my phone.
Change the carrier
4:18, put laptops on top of the Xbox
Forget the 5G, I wanna know about the RV!
But Verizon sets your data cap on a family plan at 16 gb which is much lower than home cable Cox at 1TB.
Amazing!they are discussing this issue without 5G network...
If you get even closer to the mm wave antenna you can cook a hotdog on a stick you hold up!

@Cam Darlington Can't tell if you are being sarcastic or not lol. Hong Kong apartments are notoriously small, and houses are un-affordable.
5G should not be used in your home unless you have no other options (such as Verizon Fios which can give you gigabit+ speeds). 5G is primarily designed for IOT and mobile applications. It is not practical to use your cell phone for home internet. Fiber Optics will always be faster than wireless.
In Portugal I get 1gbps fiber to home for 30eur...
im the only one who heard that voice crack when she said verISon says it plans to roll out its sub6
Who needs tht speed on the phone ? 🤦🏼♂️
its so u can work on ur laptop remotely from anywhere
Yeah it's useful for Self driving and VR
When I think of 5G and the future of 5G I think 'Minority Report' the movie is an example of where this is going.
you don't need 5G, already happen in China. search youtube China AI human tracking.
I cannot join my friends camping in california because I need phone and internet all the time for my work (there maybe emergencies). A productive society needs good fast Internet everywhere
A productive society needs to have places with no coverage so people can take a break from work and recharge
You can get a gigabit connection for that speed
A good primer for people. Using a phone as a WiFi hotspot for a lot of devices... the phone isn't designed for that so I'm not sure why you'd do it that way... It will be nice when cellular can compete with the monopoly cable companies in my area.
3:20 120 on sub-6??
i got tht on 4g
Lol what happend to the upload speed??
I believe that it's not mmWave. Also this test is under a basestation (BE) which doesn't make sense. Many users are pretty random in distance to the BS. So when you report the speed please do a random walk on the street. If it's mmWave, there will be quite a lot of BS on the street, otherwise, the signal must be super low due to the short wavelength.

Even if we get High Up/Down speeds ... how much is it going to cost? Cable Internet is expensive enough and is definitely not accessible to all Home Owners. Cable Internet really needs an affordable competitor in the US.
I live 2 min walk from that pole in Jersey City!!!
It did already!
Your home needs to use 1000M board-band ISP as well as a Wifi router

Gaming is clear winner! 5G inside high automation commercial settings seems compelling and I think new innovations will be built environment based rather than on our phones. // Your videos are great! Tx

My ISP in India do provide 1 GBPS speed in India through optical fiber if I take up their most expensive subscription which is ₹3499 or USD 48. But who need that much speed anyway. I am happy with 150 MBPS plan.
Be all the same when everyone on it with modern day devices driving need
1:22 You're not even comparing the same metric
Joanna Stern Rocks! There I said it...

That's unfair
80-90 mbps on sub6 and twice as fast as 4g? is this just in the states like this? Here in Europe i get 150 mbps on 4g.
Adults wasting time playing games. World has gone crazy.
You are going to pay more for 4G and slower home wifi in US regardless. I was told like 3 to 4years ago. And we still don't have fiber.
We have fiber in the Netherlands, but I hear a lot of people complain about it. So I don't want it.
@NOYOU XD Yet they make you pay the same price or higher for slower speed.
You missed 2.5 gzh already in dozens of cities. The is way more important than milimeter. T-Mobile will have thousands and thousands and thousands of sites lit up by the end of the year. This is truly going to be the Sweet spot of penetration distance and speed.
