- Glytch is back again, this time with a new short format, GlytchTips!
This tip happens to be about getting unlimited hotspot from your phone on any connected PC using TTL mangling, this week on Hak5!
Windows Commands (run cmd as administrator):
netsh int ipv4 set glob defaultcurhoplimit=65
netsh int ipv6 set glob defaultcurhoplimit=65
Replace 65 with 128 to reset to default if issues occur on other networks.

For anyone that's wondering: "Is this free infinite mobile data?" - *No, it isn't.*
You are still limited by your phones data plan and this only works if you already have an unlimited mobile data plan. The video is about exactly those internet plans that are infinite, but have a cap in their amount of data shared in hotspots, meaning that at some point, you will download slower from devices in your hotspot. The video is about bypassing that throttle, it doesn't apply to every person.
If you have for example a 5GB/month total plan, then you are only able to do this with 5GB of data, once you reach this, you won't be able to use the internet anymore, neither on your pc nor on your phone (technically many plans have then a "throttled" mode, but we are talking about kb/s then). You cannot bypass your phones [x]GB data plan with this, because this is in general not possible.
I don't get it what does this command help me with? I get same speeds on my android and on my pc using mobile hotspot
Totally agree. Here in Canada, there is no such thing as unlimited data since after a point the throughput is so throttled that it makes it impossible to use except for very basic email.

This is some exotic weird stuff for me, in country where I live you just buy a data plan and use it, there is no such thing like separate data for phone, hotspot or freaking refrigerator.
What you said is confusing.
With a unlimited phone plan and 3 GB hotspot data, you can use this to get unlimited hotspot data.
If you're on a budget plan with limited data for your phone, this won't help.
I had stopped watching Hak5 for a long while until Glytch started posting here. His videos are perfect for somone like me who understands a little of everything but really nothing completely.
A jack of all trades is a master of none,
_but oftentimes better than a master of one._
I'm proud to be a Jack ✊
I would like to see more GlythTips
Yes !!
@@Glytch hey amigo thanks for the tip what you do a long form video on this tip would greatly appreciate the added context
What do I do if my phone has been hacked.
Maybe
holy crap for the first video seen by me on this channel I'm in 100% I want to see more of these it was easy enough for a novice like me to understand and execute flawlessly on my own device thank you
I would never "thumbs down" a content creator I liked, and I don't want to discourage this new format (I think it's a great idea) but not only is the title of the video deceptive and click-baity, but.. there's no deep dive! You say "run this command" with no explanation on how changing TTL gets around the throttling, or even getting into the detail that @Das_Unterstrich did below about who this will work for, and why. I would like to see more accurate titles, and include the explanation of how and why it works. Good luck!
This x1000
I find most of his videos interesting as topics but not so helpful to translate into doing. He talks a lot, demos very little, and jumps over the details too much. Nice to know these things can be done however.
The TTL for verizon (or most carriers on android for that matter) is 64, when acting as a hotsopt it loses 1, so even if you tether another phone it becomes 63, so by setting it to 65 once it reaches the carriers APN, it shows 64, essentially tricking the network into believing that the data usage is originating from the phone and not the connected device.
Bruh 99 out of 100 don't care how it works
Great tip. Not in any way affiliated, but Easytether also allows you to connect to just about anything, wired or Bluetooth. Has drivers for just about every OS. Supports Openwrt as well. I have my router set up with a hotplug to auto connect VPN on usb plug. It charges my phone while I tether on unlimited basis and auto connects to VPN upon plugging in. Either way... this is great information to know. I would love to be able produce the results of the app myself someday if the developer stops support. Keep the videos coming!
What router software do you use to set up the Auto connect on USB plug??? Is this PF sense router?; Where did you find the guide to do this?
I did this on openwrt with a USB connection to a spare Android. It's configured as a failover connection and openwrt sets the TTL for the USB tether, which makes the entire wifi network operate at full speed :)
Is there a tutorial somewhere?
Could you go a little more on depth on how you set that up?
I started nomading a few months ago. I'm still wrestling to get decent internet. This tip and the other related tip is hopefully the light at the end of my tunnel. More Glytch!
Thanks man, I was lied to a sales person that I could use my plan on a sim modem, turns out theres a hotspot limit which i wasnt told, quite deserving.
i was without internet (slow though it may be) at home for a month and a half while replacing a tower. i had to deal with 5 gigs and searched franticly for this answer. lesson learned and set for future emergencies. thank you.
one could also use a travelrouter with phone thethering support (example: "mango" from gl-inet for ~20€ or "shadow" also gl-inet for ~40€( has bettet processor and stuff)) ... for the ttl canging and rebroadcasting
I run a mini gl 😈😈
Heck yeah, man. I'd love to see more of this.
Btw, are you recording these from a stealth van rv? That's rad as hell.
Lol was thinking same thing
This kid (Glytch) reminds me in the way that he looks, sounds and acts like my old phreaker partner in crime. Except my friend had long hair. But Glytch could be his son for all I know. I really have to look my friend up, see where he’s at after 32 years! We sorta lost sight when the 92 majority of our PBXes were made digital and there wasn’t a lot of phreaking and he (for some weird reason) failed many classes in college. Because I was the computer geek with a little electronics knowledge and in highschool he taught me electronics and vice versa. I guess that practical experience is very different from the extreme maths heavy focus in EE. But seeing this kid really brings back fond memories, of us routing calls across the planet trying to get the highest delay! And us downloading software from American BBS that we’d crack (mainly me but he was a great co-pilot) and sold in school for the cost of a floppy and a snack 😂
Gosh those early 90s and mid 80s when we met were the best time.😊
Outstanding video's / posts. Always look forward to them.
What about the stipulation in most cell providers terms of service for "unlimited" plans that usually states "after 65 gigabytes of data usage during one billing cycle, we reserve the right to review your usage and terminate your service"
Does not work on T-Mobile unlimited data plans. I used up my tethered allocation and tested before the throttling it was 300Mbps and after throttling was 600 kbps regardless of TTL setting to 65 before they began to throttle it.
can confirm iam on t mobiel unlimted data and this does not work even if you change the number form 65- 60.
Video starts at 2:23
How about doing a modern tutorial on how to root a modern android phone and all the software needed on windows to complete the tasks
This is awesome, I wondered about this, I use Linux Mint, could you show us on how to do that as well on Linux?
Cool thanks Glytch - I live on my boat here in Juneau Alaska and Always Enjoy your posts.
This actually does work when using a phone or mifi as your AP. If your cellular provider sees a ttl of 128 they know it’s a Windows PC and charge you more.
That Win Max in the thumbnail though lol
i miss these types of videos :(
What ever happened to the Darren/Shannon longer form videos? I know she moved but surely thats not all?
This
this is perfect, would love to see more!
About 2012,I was in Florida at an AT&T Store. They showed me their best Hot Spot and the upload speed was about 12 mb. A program I got from June Fabric's that I downloaded onto my Android phone could be used once I had root access to Android. I plugged in into my laptop and let them see the speed! It blew them away that my speed was over 300 mb's compared to theirs. They wanted to know what I did, and how I did it,but I just smiled, packed up my gear and left, and I also used a small usb amplifier.
PdaNet ;)
Yeah more glytch tips. this is dope.
i don't get it. is this allowing your throttled unlimited plan to be unthrottled? not sure what the hack here is.
This will not work on a lot of carrier provided phones because they now open a second rmnet gateway for the hotspot. Changing the TTL will not work on phones that open a secondary gateway for the hotspot. You can turn the creation of a secondary gateway off, but it requires root.
very nice m8, hope you have a great year!
I liked the OCP logo in the beginning.
Freakin perfect. TY glytch - love this content and all the van stuff.
Moar Glytch tips!
Wow, thank you so much Glych, it works amazingly well. You've earned your angel wings.
Yessir finally I can watch a movie again
This should include what cell providers this works on. It for sure works on Verizon and Verizon resellers...But it does work on all providers
Maybe you could do a Mac version? Please. Thank you.
Did you ever figure this out? Cause I can’t
Hey Glytch, looking forward to more like this!
Also interested in how you're doing CAD on your phone. What CAD software are you using, and how is the performance?
no change in speed for me what so ever
what is the command on linux/macos?
I think on MacOS, the command would be:
"sudo sysctl -w net.inet.ip.ttl=65"
thanks, I really like this style of video, it was really useful, keep it up!
This TTL hack won't work with AT&T. They don't use TTL or the User Agent string to determine hotspot data, rather they use the APN. They have separate APNs for on-device data vs hotspot data. Additionally, the more people find out about this TTL trick, the more likely Verizon and T-Mobile are to change the way they detect hotspotting/tethering. So I wouldn't count on this continuing to work a year or two from now.
still works. thanks for the explanation too. i was wondering about WHY it works. Very interesting for sure.
You need to do this with a WiFi pineapple. This is such a tip and I love the van at the moment
I haven't researched how this works internally yet but would it be possible to do something similar to bypass the data limits on residential and commercial ISPs?
nope ive tryed dosdent work
He didn’t really explain the WHY it works. Mobile phones usually have a TTL of 64. And apparently cellphone companies use this to see whether packets are coming from a tethered device (aka Hotspot) it would have a TTL of 63 or 127 depending when it arrives on the first hop (cell phone tower/router) because the first hop was deprecated via the cellphone hotspot. So you trick it by making the TTL 65, so that when it’s deprecated by 1, it arrives at the cellphone router as 64, making it look like it came from the phone itself.
yeah he probably didn't explain it because his previous video did (but that was quite a while ago so maybe he should have)
So something I do want to mention is that your phone is not designed for constant use of data that your computer will push. I've actually had a phone overheat while using it this way and the battery failed. Failed as in it expanded twice it's size and since it was a LG G4 it was difficult to remove (battery slides out the bottom). With that said I had regularly used about 700GB/mo mostly without issue using a similar trick.
do you know how to do this on my macbook pro
@@adamotak5145 Sorry. Not a Mac user.
If you wanted unlimited hotspot with ATT on a samsung phone, if you flash XAA (US Unlocked) onto your phone instead of ATT's firmware then they cannot see when your tethering vs when your just using data.
I used to have that until they updated their network to 5g I cant get it now any new hack u got
How about best methods for hacking hotspot IMEI's?
Just shows how ambiguous the data limits are. :D
Help doesn't work I still get 50kbs download
You in a van bro? Cool asf tbh
I am new to this channel and I am in love with the content !!!
would love to see more of it...
How do you do this on a rooted Android device?
Feb 2022! Worked like a charm. Thank you Extremely much!
Used it a 3 gb plan and it worked.
Why does my regular Wifi Connection improve when I run this command? I am on my usual home network and I can get slightly faster speeds.
just had big nostalgia seeing cmd and remember watching star wars in ascii
I wish I knew about this when I had slower internet but will be useful if my internet ever goes out
Lovely! Kindda that APNs stuff.
Need more 🔥
A VPN would not accomplish this. This is because a VPN uses normal packets (with default TTL) that encapsulates the VPN frames inside. Since the outer packets are routed as normal packets, the TTL is not overridden in this way.
Very good, but description could be more clear (less click baity) otherwise, I am impressed by the video! More like this please. Hack the planet!
So after my 50gbs ran out my speeds slowed down to just bytes and update downloads say expected complete time more than a year...
Love'n glitch tips! Keep it coming bro!
Awesome man. 👍🏼 Keep 'em coming!
Actually, would be good if Glytch would show us, how to Pentest WP site, How to use Sniffed Network data and so on and on. These things, get you more inspired. Thanks
This also works on iPhone/iPad hotspots! Improved my otherwise throttled connection 9-fold on my Visible plan.
now this is epic
I love the GlytchTips
Awesome video man. Very smart, and it works!
I am also really interested in how you are using your phone it seems really unique.
How does it work?
I mean is it really possible to get unlimited internet data JUST by setting that hopelimit=65?
Don't we have to do anything in mobile phone???
Anyone please?
We use shaw which has unlimited internet & endless hotspots etc...
@@marknieuwejaar1075 could you elaborate more this?
You are still limited by your phones data plan. This only works if you have unlimited mobile data. If you have for example a 5GB/month total plan, then you are only able to do this with 5GB of data (technically many plans have then a "throttled" mode, but we are talking about kb/s then)
@@Das_Unterstrich ohh😅
So it's just way to slow down the speed (from mbps to kbps) so that that 5 GB will be used but slow (very slow) but for a long time result in feel like "unlimited"
Right?
Not quite. The video is about internet plans that are infinite, but have a cap in their amount of data shared in hotspots
Thank you so much Glitch. I love your videos.
Yooo.. greetings from the east coast! nice video, ive been using pdanet(win&android) w/connectify then into router to have all my iot devices to connect.. im bussing min 250 gig monthly on my current setup..been on it for years.. Loyal fan wishing i had a van..
Glitch I love your videos so much knowledge you share thank you man
How do I see what people are doing on my wifi network? Like if my kids are talking to who their supposed to be, is there a way I can see their text messages, or their Facebook messenger messages? I have access to the phones which are android galaxy Z fold 2's.
Effective CAD on a phone? Please do tell!
iPhone.
Can you explain why this works to trick the phone / modem into thinking the Hotspot data isn't coming from the hotspot?
Mobile phones don't use a TTL of 65, they use a TTL of 64 like basically everything else.
What is happening is that when tethered the PC sends packets with a TTL of 64, it goes through the phone which acts as a gateway so now the packet has a TTL of 63 after one hop. *that's* what they detect
Very cool, glad to see this easy method
Can't help but notice Glitch's GPD Win Max
Me and Glytch have the same blanket :)
is the carrier only limiting based on the TTL?
I am guessing so. It makes the payload looks like its from a linux system which android is based on.
It would be a LOT better if you explained WHY or HOW this works. I don't want to know WHAT to set nearly so much as WHY to set it or HOW it works.
Carrier is using TTL to figure out where the data packet is coming from. Each router that receives the packet subtracts at least 1 from the count. All packets from the phone have the same TTL, hotspot devices will have a different TTL. What you are doing it making the packet from the hotspot device have the same TTL as the phone when the carrier receives it.
To you have any updates on this? I was using it but now it doesn’t work my cellular provider said I used up all my hotspot data when before I was using it a whole lot more without issues?
I’m going to check my laptop because of updates I’m thinking maybe it changed the coding back
hi i have satelite internet any tips to avoid data throtting?
Dude.... you a boss. Thank you. I subscribed and shared. Gangstaaaa 🖖(not a Vulcan emoji) that's WestSiiiide
Yes....more please 😎
Hello Dudes! does it still work in 2024 verizon ?
I was so excited for this because I was wondering the same thing. My LTE carrier throttles tethered Wi-Fi data down to 512kbps. Sadly setting my laptop default hop limit didn't work to get around it. Still at a measly half MB
This doesnt seem to work anymore for the services I have tried in 2023. It seems carriers are finding ways to disable these simple "hacks".
I'm noticing the same. Did you find a way around it? Weirdly enough I was able to use over 40~ gigs of Hotspot when I'm only given 15 by my provider.
Glytch is the ish
Man u made my day ! Thanks a loooot
so all you're doing is changing the TTL to a Unix/Linux TTL and it bypasses throttling?
Does this mean that Linux OS's are throttle-resistant?
Excellent video!!
Nice thank hak5 thanks GlythTips
U the MVP Glytch
Some network carriers check for differentl numbers for the TTL. You should include this fact, as well as a couple of the more common settings either in an update or in the video description. A friend of mine has to use a different number than 65 to get his to work, because carriers have caught on to this
What number did he use
What the #
Just wondering if you experience any throttling on the VPN"s in the US since the 1st of Feb?
How about for linux?
I have the Samsung Z Fold2 as well and would love to see some of your tips and tricks for it.
Still works in 22, thanks for the tech tip
How? Not working for me
@@syedosmankhadri8639 try 60 instead of 65 in cmd, worked after i did it.
This works for downloading games and updates. But if you try to play CSGO with it set to 65 it will make you have 600+ ping. I know that some apps don't work with this and playing counter strike is one of them.
