  • In this video I'll unbox a small order from Choosing Keeping in London, show you the beautiful items I bought, and then I'll swatch their 1930s gansai watercolour set (enlisting the help of Google Translate for the Japanese names!). Finally, I'll create a small mixed media painting in my Etchr sketchbook, using the gansai paints combined with Neocolor pastels, coloured pencils, and Molotow acrylic markers. As always, I hope you enjoy it and thanks for watching!

Very beautiful painting! In Japanese swords, the iron that surrounds the flexible core iron in the center of the blade from the outside is called "Kawagane". Frankly, carbon steel color.

    Japanese don’t pronounce “r” as r… it is more of a blend of R, L and D😊 …very cool colors!…lovely painting!
…I found this on their website…
    Colour Breakdown:
    211 - Aketsuchi - Earthy crimson
    42 - Kurocha - Black tea
    36 - Kin-oudoiro - Golden ochre
44 - Gunroku - Mixed green - traditionally this pigment is made of a mixture of azurite and malachite.
19 - Kawagane - Iron skin; when a Japanese sword is made the more flexible interior metal, shingane, is coated in far stronger metal coating - kawagane.
38 - Kodai-murasaki - Ancient purple - due to the cost of the pigment, purple was traditionally associated with wealth in Japan and ordinary people were not permitted to wear it.
    22 - Kogecha - Charred tea
    34 - Hadairo - flesh

I found it so hard to pronounce them properly, and the fact that I'd looked at the written word beforehand which looks so different to the spoken pronunciation made it even harder! :D Thanks for the information! :)

Good attempts at the Japanese! For "hada iro", you mention how it's strange because it's romanized as "iro" but it sounds like "ido". "r" sounds are very different and not much like they are in English. For the one in "iro", try this little exercise. Make an L sounds (like lion) and pay attention to where your tongue lands -- generally it'll push up against your teeth or close to your teeth at the roof of your mouth. Now try an R sound (like rose) and pay attention to where your tongue goes, it doesn't quite hit the top of your mouth and is further back in your mouth than an L. Now for the sound in "iro", try to have your tongue hit the top of your mouth (quickly, don't hold it) like in L (like lion) but further back in your mouth like an R (like rose). It'll be an L/Rish sound with a bit of a staccato that gives it a bit of a D. See if that gets you closer to that sound :)

Oooooh! Choosing Keeping! What a rich treasure trove!! The Gansai Tambi set is so lovely. What a wonderful palette. I’ve been painting with Gansai Tambi for a while now and I simply love it. Lovely video as usual Natasha! I have noticed in comments that people are paying exorbitant postal fees to purchase these paints from Choosing keeping. They have a nice website and products but all they do is resel stuff a lot more expensive. These paints are just the Kuretake Gansai Tambi paints separated in smaller sets and repackaged nicer. One of their 35 colour set costs £75 when you can find it on Amazon with £29. I have the Kuretake set and it's the same colours. It's available in the US, no need to pay these huge postal fees.Kuretake also sells individual colours (I think they are around £2 each on Amazon, eBay etc) and you can make your own set.Sorry couldn't help it as I hate when artists pay this much for supplies available cheaper somewhere else. It's basically paying for a nicer wrapping paper and a cute sticker. ..

Their 17th Century Drawing Paper Pad is one of the most luxurious things I own. It responds beautifully to dry and wet media. I'm in the States so I have only ordered from there once because of the shipping expense, and that's probably for the best (for my wallet, at least). Even without the shipping, I spent an irresponsible amount of money buying from there. But everything was worth it, even the wrapping paper! I only just finally started using it to decorate my journals instead of hoarding it for no specific purpose.

I recently dedicated one of my (too many) mixed media sketchbooks to swatching out *by color* all of my watercolor & gouache paints, pencils, crayons. I’ve started with everything in the blue range. So far, I’m finding viewing all of one color in one place regardless of medium makes choosing exactly what product, tone, hue, value, etc., will work best for my mixed media work. This project is a *very* long term endeavor and should occupy me through New York State’s long, snowy winter.

It is a great idea to have one place for your swatches.
I made myself a binder with collector inlays for playing cards where I put in all of my swatch cards which I made of each watercolorpaint that I own. This way I can take them out of the binder and combine them next to one another. And I can easily sort in new colours.
That helps me a lot if I want to choose specific colors or want to put together a color theme. Nevertheless I refer many many times to my colour collection binder.

I keep meaning to buy from Choosing Keeping, I like their unique watercolor sets. Alas, I am only half Japanese and I never learnt to speak it. My mom was from Tokyo and I used to listen to her speak it with her sister-my aunt-and some of her friends. I can tell when it is spoken apart from other Asian languages and I know only a few words. She also spoke English and Spanish. She was good at learning different languages. I wonder if your notebook has Tomoe River paper. I have recently started journaling and using fountain pens, some of them vintage circa 1930s-1940s, to do it. Beautiful little landscape. Once again, thanks for sharing.

I think the first video I found of yours was a Choosing Keeping haul. So charming! I can't seem to find those gansai paints anywhere else. I feel like they must be the shop's exclusive perhaps? And...just so you know...it's pronounced alumalum. Lol...I can't even think of the word aluminum without thinking of Andy Dwyer from Parks and Rec when he's talking to that fancy Lord whatsits dude. And OMG when Andy's looking at the Parliament building- it's Hogwart's! Ben's all, you know Hogwart's is fictional right? It's important to me that you know that..with that look on his face. I about passed out from laughing. But, yeah....alumalum. Edit: Lord Edgar Covington...I just watched the clip again and I'm dying over here.

I'm not Japanese, but I did take a few years of classes for it. My first thought for Kawagane was it having to do something with rivers as kawa is in it. However, googling the whole name in hiragana actually led me to train pictures. I wonder if it's actually talking about steam locomotives...

I now always use MT washi tape (you can get it from Cult Pens for quite a good price) or the one I'm using here which was from an Etsy seller (it doesn't have the brand name on it though, so I don't know what it is!). The Choosing Keeping notebook has fairly thin paper, but it's a nice quality. It will be ok for small swatches, which is what I'll be using it for, but I doubt it would hold up well to a lot of water!
