In this video I'll share a new art book I recently purchased for the studio, The Book of the Tree: Trees in Art. I'm finding it very inspiring and it's giving me so many ideas for the new tree paintings that I'm planning to work on in the new year! I'll also share the process of a small watercolour tree painting on handmade paper, while I chat to you about social media and why I've recently left Twitter and Facebook. Think of this one as part video, part podcast! Thank you for watching (or listening). ;)

I see that you are mostly posting on patreon now and the youtube content has diminished a bit, will you still be doing the large swatching videos and hauls here or only on patreon from now on?

    • @NatashaNewtonArt

@@catsontherise4300 Hi! I'm just taking a bit of time off over the holiday period and because I need a rest. :) I'm going to continue to upload to RUclips and Patreon (although with youtube I may only be uploading 2 - 3 videos per month). I'm planning on doing fewer art hauls this year, because I now have most of the art supplies I could possibly need! But I do plan on filming more 'Favourites' videos, where I'll swatch and show the supplies I have in more depth. These will be mainly on YT, and on Patreon I share much more of my art process (which sometimes does include swatching/reviewing etc too!).

Thank you for the book recommendation Natasha! I'm in love with trees and often wonder if they are sentient beings and it's just that we humans didn't discover it yet. RUclips is my favorite social platform these days. I used to love Instagram but now I find it frustrating. As of late I am shown less and less of the accounts I already follow (and want to see) but instead I am bombarded by suggested posts from accounts I don't follow and of course ads. The small tree paining is lovely.

    • @NatashaNewtonArt

I feel this way about trees too. :) And I totally agree with you about Instagram - I like it as a platform but the algorithm sucks - as do the ads, and the way you get blasted out of your seat by unexpected reels and loud stories!

I LOVE TREES TOO! One of my favorite things to paint and draw and just be in the presence of. They bring me such a calm sereneness that I crave a lot in my daily life. I really agree with everything you said about FB...I think you encapsulated so much of what a lot of us artists feel about it and how it doesn't bode well for our creativity and mental wellness. Thank you for sharing your experience. I have felt so much better since stepping away from it gosh over 5 years ago. I keep meaning to take all of my content down and deleting it. Saving some of my posts that hold special memories for me.

I completely agree with you about trees. I went out for a walk in nature today and immediately felt better than I had for days. We walked through part of a wood and everything looked so beautifully wintry. It felt so good to be amongst the trees. I love being able to see their structure in winter!

That’s a beautiful book, looks very inspiring! I’m currently reading “The Hidden Life of Trees” which is absolutely fascinating (for us tree geeks 😅). Not an art book, but it makes you look at trees in a totally different way 🌲🌳
I completely agree about Twitter becoming absolutely unreadable. I do like Facebook and I carefully select the groups I’m in, that they are well moderated etc. It’s less about being in contact with friends and family now, but that’s also true for my Instagram activity, which I use mainly for business including art. I guess it’s better anyway to focus on a few platforms only.
Have a lovely Christmas break!! 🎄

Your talent and honesty is wonderful hence your reccomendations I take to heart. I left Facebook a few years ago and vowed to never go back. This platform is like educational TV. I can share in programming by my likes and thumbs up. Dark moody colors with a pop of vibrancy like cobalt blue or the quinacridones are refreshing. When you talk about color palettes I am all ears because even the artist I know in face to face conversation do not talk about art supplies. I so appreciate you.

I just found this video and VERY grateful for your telling about your experiences!! It’s the first time I heard someone say they are extremely sensitive to the feelings coming from others and can even affect you physically. I’ve known this about myself for years!! I honestly have same reactions!!
Of course, I was first aware of this when physically around someone who left me feeling very dirty/yucky in my soul. I can recall that there was nothing they actually said or did that I could point to but I knew they weren’t “truly kind”. But when I mentioned it to my mother she “blew it off” and I thought something was odd with me. Later, that person revealed they did have a mean spirit.
I, too, got the same feeling for Facebook around 2012-2013. Although I didn’t personally receive negative comments I just felt that dirty/drained feeling from some others sites and it kept increasing.
I haven’t been on RUclips as long but was telling my husband yesterday evening how kind and caring the art community is on RUclips. A lady I watch lost her husband and she came on and it was apparent she was overwhelmed by the response of her community. I know I truly was heartbroken for her and was so grateful she received a bit of comfort from everyone.
I’ve always lived in small towns and had a group of fellow artists/crafters who would meet to create, learn and encourage each other!! My last move brought me to an area that has left me without that community. I did find a couple people but they were quite a bit older and when they no longer were able to attend the Art Association it just dissolved. Although I have met with mayor, chamber and others no one is interested. (The other groups were just organically created but had to go to the tiny Association to find anyone who loved art like I)
I’m a Math teacher and our Junior High and High School dropped Art when the teachers quit. They even dismantled and discarded ALL the materials!!! I’d left teaching or definitely would have packed and given the elders home these supplies.
I’m telling you this because I FINALLY just began watching RUclips to connect and watch other artists. I’ve met a couple of people I consider friends! But I finally found a group that I feel “at home “ with now.
I live in one of the biggest oilfield areas and found I don’t have many things in common with people here. It’s very weird because I have always found a couple of people that I connected with in the 2 other towns. It’s VERY VERY different attitude here. The previous towns were farming and ranching community. I’m usually fine by myself but missed sharing art and being around those people .
RUclips community has definitely helped fill this void…. , YOU are one of a handful of people, are my favorites…I get a good feeling inside afterwards…you brighten my day and truly have been such a blessing the past couple of years.
I usually don’t comment because I heard someone complaining about the time it took to respond and they were off putting. I just appreciated the time and talent put in making videos and enjoyed seeing others create.
I quit watching that person very quickly but still felt odd responding.
I just HAD to comment today!!
While here…please know that you are so appreciated! I’m very grateful that you spend your time to film, edit and post your videos so generously sharing your talent and supplies with me..
    I’m fine with a ❤️.
Please know you are in my top 3! Your gentle sweet spirit is always so good for me! I absolutely love your paintings! Of course I enjoy seeing your hauls and new mediums and colors when you swatch them.
    I’ll quit rambling on now…
You MADE me feel SO GOOD this morning!! I just needed to thank you, Natasha.
    Hugs from Texas,
    Nancy Rolfe

Omg I LOVE that book, its so good and really inspiring. If you love tree books I can also recommend "Tree Magic" by Danu Forest, it's not an art book but full of tree wisdom.
I totally feel you about social media. Twitter is so toxic even in the art community. I even unfollowed hundreds of people and tried to only follow people who post art but it doesn't make a difference. I only keep my profile because it comes in handy when you need to reach "support teams" at various companies - a sad truth. You have to make a public stink in order to get their connection. But I never look at the feed.
I've not used my personal FB in years and only use my business page to post a few classes and such but never log on besides that. I had my instagram posts pushed to FB for a while but I don't even know if that still works 🤣
You sound like an empath like me and we really have to protect ourselves from energy vampires and energy traps.
I agree about youtube being such a wonderful haven of likeminded generous art lovers. I am so grateful for it. Twitch was like that for me for years too, but has a limited community. RUclips feels endless. It's such a fun platform.
    I admit I'm a YT addict now 😅

Thanks for the book recommendation, Sarah! I'll check it out. :) It's so interesting to hear your thoughts on the various social media platforms too. I really feel that Twitter is so toxic. I also tried to use it in a different way to how I had been using it, but had to just give up on it altogether. I am an empath (by the way, we also have vegetarianism in common - I forgot to mention that in a comment I left on one of your recent videos where you mentioned it!) and I find certain people or situations incredibly draining.

Hello Natasha! This looks like a lovely book which I'm planning to buy for myself for Christmas. Every illustration is wonderful. I especially love Magritte. I'm a big fan of Klee but I don't think he painted trees. How have you been? I've been busy following other artists but I always come back to you and your lovely work. I call my art, Art joy because it brings me so much joy and peace. So I hope you have a peaceful Christmas and a blessed holiday season and I'll continue to enjoy and follow your RUclips channel. I have never posted on Facebook- although I have an account in order to access some sites. I just never wanted my life “online.” And Twitter just seems downright vicious. I feel poisoned after I’ve been on it. When I get the energy, I am going to completely delete as well. Wonderful watching you paint. Trees are my holy grail. 😂

I loved this and have had a similar experience as a fellow 'sensitive soul' on the internet, in re: twitter/fb. Please don't feel that you have to apologize for sharing what's in your heart and mind. I know that I'm new to your channel and especially new to commenting, but every different type of video you upload is lovely in its own way. I can only speak for myself, but for me, it's as much about the person behind the channel as it is the content on it. I'm particularly happy because your videos have encouraged me to do art again after a sadly overlong hiatus. So, thanks!

I love Trees!! One of my favorite artwork subjects, along with old barns, houses and cabins. If the building is old it looks better if they are askew. Yes, I love a lot of pictures in my art books, too. I feel the same about Twitter a Facebook and seldom go to either. I go to Facebook more than Twitter as I have friends and family on FB. I enjoyed joyed Twitter for a long time and even won some wonderful Stillman & Birn art sketch books. I enjoyed listening to you while you painted and you can never talk too much! It’s time, I feel is, well spent with my friend. I wish Instagram hadn’t had so many changes, but it’s about getting used to them. It’s harder to read the messages on RUclips, now. And harder to leave messages. But I’m a talker and will continue to try. Do take care of yourself. Stay strong, healthy and robust! Have a wonderful week and a very Merry Christmas with your family and friends! Love from the mountain top, Fran

That book went straight on to my wish list (would have been my basket but I've spent a little too much money on Christmas pressies to warrant buying it just yet!). I love trees and was one of my most commonly photographed subjects back when I did more photography. I'm terrible at painting them though so will use this book for inspiration when I buy it.
I feel you regarding social media. I mostly use Twitter to look at the occasional dog post and some science-based people. Facebook is mostly for staying in touch with family. Instagram I am far too hooked on but it's certainly not as toxic as the other two.

Totally agree about the Facebook thing, can’t comment on twitter as it never appealed to me as an older individual😅 so glad you have found your social niche, it’s always difficult when you are a soft, sensitive being. Loved the painting of the tree….you make it all seem so easy but when I try to paint thin lines on “rough” paper they never look as clean as yours! Merry Christmas from New England, Natasha! I enjoyed watching this video on my very low-key holiday. And oh that book! It collides with my half-considered vow to stop buying more stuff.
I started watching your channel for the art, but I have stayed for what is more than art. The covid isolation has been very burdensome even to cranky introverts such as myself. My sister and I are the last of the family and my very few friends are far away. Being American, I am transfixed by our political peril. I have two remedies for my anxieties. One is to watch RUclips videos of British comedy. The second is to search RUclips for art videos. I follow a few artists, but I always look forward to yours to lift me and remind me what humanity feels like.
I have little interest in social media outside YT. I read political tweets, but I never post. Somehow, I never acquired the Instagram habit.
(If you take away the trunk of your tree, it resembles ocean coral. Hmm.)
