Assassin's Creed | What Happened to Dual Hidden Blades???

- It's been a long time since we've been able to dual-wield hidden blades in Assassin's Creed. In this video I talk about the origins of the dual hidden blades, why they haven't been in the recent games, and why Naoe from Assassin's Creed Shadows seemingly only has one hidden blade as well.

@@futiweakNo he doesn't. He only has one. You might be thinking of Jacob and Evie Frye who have 2.
Too bad he's a badly written and an utterly pathetic character.
Anything that is worth to him as a character are just damn game mechanics.😂
@@memecliparchives2254 let me guess... your favorite ac character comes before acu?
@@memecliparchives2254 Agreed. I love his style of gameplay but that's it. Unity's story was so bad and rushed. It could have been the best story in the series.
Like what if Arno and Elise would be married only to later find out that they're on opposite sides. As the story progresses, the nation falls more and more apart, with Arno supporting the revolution and Elise against it. Both the assassin and templar orders fall apart and it's basically only them at the end, and they fight to the death over their ideals that destroyed their love.
I don't know. It's stupid but I just can't help but suggest ANYTHING other than what we got.
Quick correction, the Assassin from Constantinople in Mirage was NOT an Ottoman. But a Byzantine, the Ottomans did not exist at this point in history.
At the time he would have considered himself Roman.
@@petrri323 he was Roman. We just distinguish the Eastern and Western Roman empires, after the fall of the West, by dubbing the East as the "Byzantine" empire. Am I wrong?
@@Ilham00001 You're right, although "Byzantine" is an anachronistic term. They called themselves "Romans" (Arabs as well using "Rumiyyun") while westerners called them "Greeks".

I miss being able to just... unseathe the hidden blade(s)
With no target , just letting them out, and being able to see them in all their glory
Arno's double assassinations are so cool. Specifically the air doubles have some amazingly badass animations
I think dual hidden blades are cool but I also like how Altair uses one arm to grapple and one arm to stab. But, I guess having two of them doesn’t prevent an Assassin from doing that anyway. Altair’s counter kills with the hidden blade are also incredibly dope one might say.
Scarcity before Altair is the one that makes sense. Because mentors would get 2 assassin members for 2 blades instead of having one assassin with 2 blades.
Definitely because at the time the blade required a lost of finger. Losing two fingers is crazy
Another theory I have for why she only gets one blade in AC Shadows may also be a scarcity, due to her village being burned down, and Fujibayashi maybe not being able to have the resources to make more due to the village, and possibly the Assassin's hideout burning down. The forgery that would make them would also be burned down, and this would also explain why we have the hideout. The original Assassins Hideout got burned down. The blade forgers might also have died in the attack, or like I mentioned before, their forge is destroyed, so yeah.
Finally someone else mentions it. They've been missing since after Syndicate, I always find it very odd that all of the modern day Assassin's still only use one. Not to mention it made the combat much more fun in the previous games with better counter kills. It was also much more practical and versatile.
They got ubisofted.

I miss the double hidden blades
I was just thinking about this when you uploaded lol.
I think the in-universe reason is that different brotherhoods have their own cultures and traditions.
For instance, The Chinese Brotherhood - who are the founders of the Japanese Brotherhood - chose to only use one. Kotetsu - the Japanese founder - seemingly kept this tradition when he started the Japanese Brotherhood, despite having the knowledge and technology to dual wield.
Even in the Black Flag WEBTOON, the mentor of the Han Chinese Brotherhood only uses a single blade despite the time period.
It’s a cool bit of world building, but I really miss dual wielding nonetheless…
Thomas de Carneillon was shown to have two hidden blades despite being part of the French Brotherhood. He tries to kill the Templar advisor with the hidden blade on his left hand and later when he does kill him he is shown using his right hand to do it, unless he was using a different weapon like a knife.
You sure about that??
I could see Naoi getting a second hidden blade later in the story, i doubt theyll do it but i still say its a possibility
God I hope not. A single hidden blade is so much better.
Maybe she'll get a shoe blade like Shao Jun. That'd be cool.
@@TheFirstCurse1I’d be down for it
I just noticed Darius had his “hidden” blade on the outside like Eivor, he was the first to use it but I guess it was before the creed was established
Yeah the creed was established like 300 years after Darius and the Odyssey
Yeah, that's what's kind of a funny lore detail. See, Bayek's first Hidden Blade, before you decide to upgrade it, WAS Darius's Hidden Blade. But due to Aya and Bayek mistakenly thinking that it was supposed to be worn on the inside of the forearm, they essentially created a tradition originating from a misunderstanding.
@@maxm.m.7219it's not mistake it can function either way
2:31 Maybe Arno uses the phantom blade to shot the other enemy in the neck
Im glad all of the north american saga of AC have dual hidden blades those are the first ac games ive played its so nostalgic to me
I think the biggest reason there's no dual blade in Origins+ isn't lore, but simply that they wanted the hidden blade to not be a combat weapon. It's a utility skill now, one you only use when assassinating people, and that's how they want it.
I kind of wish they’d make another Assassin with a unique version of the hidden blade…like how Shao Jun from AC: Embers and The Chronicles games had one in her boot
That’s still the most amazing twist up on the formula that I’ve seen to date 😁
I was thinking about this the other day because we haven’t had dual hidden blades since rogue
Syndicate had them. It's hard to notice because the right hand one is barely visible but both Jacob and Evie Frye have 2 hidden blades. Look at their stealth takedowns.
@@TheFirstCurse1 I know syndicate had them, but I mean rogue was the last time you could you know really use them like in combat or just hold X and see them pop out and in syndicate they were obscure, and then after that, we just didn’t have them at all.
I haven't watched the whole video but for the modern games i think they wemt back to an older setting and dual blade were a newer thing so i guess when we get a game which is set after syndicate we will get the dual blades back
I’m glad we are even getting one in the first place lol
There is also something to say about the abandonment of dual blades in the modern day, only Galina Voronina (the Russian Assassin in Syndicate), a random Assassin in Bloodstone (who just stands there until he dies) and William Miles. Even when Desmond stormes Abstergo in AC3 and wouldnt have any advantage of blending in more, and the Cell would have two as the AC3 blade isnt the same as the 2 and Brotherhood. Then agian, it wouldnt have been a development from before 70s as Aleksi Girivani in Bloodstone has two. Idk, whats happened with dual blades
Speaking of Naoe and the Japanese brotherhood. I hope Ubisoft does keep some assassins that were around in the lore like Yamauchi Taka (who’s two years older than Naoe; would be decent romance option for us), the obvious, Hattori Hanzō (would be nice to see some dialogue between them talking about Nagato) hell even mentions to Kotetsu (the founder of the Japanese brotherhood)
The same thing tat happened to the Themes of the Assassins Creed Franchise also happened to the Dual Hidden Blades. The Devs forgot they existed
Another W vid from one of the goats, I miss the double hidden blades as well, it was so cool, it made so much sence for assassin's to have it.
I really hope the hidden blade combat in Shadows will be like the old games, but it probably won't be. I bet you can't even select the hidden blade to use as a weapon, and it's just used in addition to a sword.
I think between Edward and shay since both share the same animations, and Edward makes more sense to use the hidden blades as his main weapon bc as a pirate he would be looking for any advantage he could get, and being armed to the teeth but fighting with blades that come out of the wrist would most definitely be something that enemy ship crews are not expecting. Also shay I believe wants to preserve life so I play him only using his fists.
Anyone else find it strange Lucy in AC 1 had her ring finger removed despite the modern day being well past Altair’s time and Desmond being able use a hidden blade without losing his ring finger in the sequel games? I guess this happened due to AC 2 not being out yet.
She bent her finger to signal that she's on the Assassin's side. She didn't got her ring finger cut
@@damizan8331 Yeah I think you're right. I couldn't tell from the camera angle of that reveal scene.
The animation in unity that looks like he’s using 2 hidden blades is (I think) him bashing his hand into the throat. Effectively closing the airways and choking him
I always thought Arno's double assassination was him shooting the target in the head with the phantom blade.
uploaded 30 seconds ago, ive never been this early!!!
2:35 what if arno just shot a phantom blade into the other guy close up
It’s pretty clear they don’t want the hidden blade to be part of combat anymore and in the rpg’s they’ve replaced double assassinations with chain assassinations, so not really a need to have two.
Also the “Ottoman” you mentioned wasn’t an ottoman, but Greek, hence the “Your Byzantine Brother-In-Arms” he signs himself as. The Turkish invasions into Greece and Anatolia had not happened yet.
Though that statement is a bit contradictory to real history, the Byzantines never went by the name Byzantine and it’s simply a title given to in modernity. At the time they were simply the Roman Empire.
Literally was thinking the exact same thing while playing last night, wild timing
With Arno the animation in question likely shows him not wielding a second hidden blade but squeezing the enemy's neck or even ripping out his larynx. However in Syndicate there also are other animations that prove the Frye twins are wearing a properly hidden blade on their right arms.

I think it’s plausible that Naoe could get a second hidden blade sometime later in the game. It would just function as an upgrade that doesn’t require you to equip an Tanto.
Great video. cant wait for the next one!
With the glitched double blade assassination in unity, it only happens if you're in a legacy outfit, and I've found many legacy outfits don't even have a hidden blade if you look at them closely.
I guess I am the opposite, I prefer having only one hidden blade, as much as I love double blades and double assassinations, having only one makes it much more special and much more important to use imo. Its kinda hard to explain but having more than one kinda takes away that specialty to it, like there's a ton of blades out there makes it a gimmick, but having only a few makes it more sacred and only some assassins get it. Its like if Thor had two hammers, its cool but takes away that specialty.
If there’s only one there should be a feature for it to be exchanged
Example arno’s blade was basically a needle and just not good at all for combat but you add the phantom blade instead
Nah I'm the exact opposite. Lets say an opponent manages to deflect an assassin's single blade, BUT the assassin's second blade gives the element of surprise, allowing the assassin to have back up plan if the first strike failed, a great ass advantage because the enemy wont react for the 2nd blade in time. It's the greatest thing ever-STEALTH, but in a COMBAT mode. It's incorrect to compare Thor to an assassin as he has nothing to conceal.
I get that some people might be frustrated about being stuck with dual hidden blades instead of one. I had the exact same problem with GTA San Andreas, except in that game you were stuck with dual pistols and SMGs as soon as you level up your weapon "skill" But why not just give us the option to use both instead of being forced to use one or the other? That way they could please everybody that complained about it, simple as that.
@@BuryTheLight-tds I get what you say but
What would be the difference in those options? Double assassination I assume, but Unity had that with just one hidden blade so it shows it can be implemented so it’s pointless
So honestly there’s little difference to 1 vs 2 in the stealth department it’s mostly about combat with the blades, it seems
@@A.Lien98 Yes, it's mostly combat that would be affected by dual blades. They could also possibly bring back the hookblade from Revelations instead of just dual hidden blades, with it's usability in combat and parkour compared to one blade, maybe even give it some sort of penalty in order to have a balance between both options.
I actually enjoy both. One for simplicity, and two for the practicality.
I am so glad unity had a much more cult like feel, and how the single hidden blade mirrored that aspect. I'm not in support of secret cults that kill for their purposes, but man.. both assassins and Templars are so cool
I like the hidden blade for stealth kills or assassinating high value targets more than random gameplay encounters
I cant wait to see how theyre gonna deal with the brotherhood in ac shadows
I mean considering how isolationist Japan was back then and even had an edict of not allowing foreigners in after Tokugawa Ieyasu came into power. It could be feasible that the Japanese brotherhood wasn’t able to get information from the other assassin brotherhoods and just used a tanto in combination with one hidden blade
Well Arno doesn't a second one cause he has the phantom blade on 1
4:20
jacob doesn't have two hidden blades. He uses one arm to kill and the other one to get blood on napkin in that scene.
No. Jacob has two hidden blades, you have the grappling hook and dart launcher on the left wrist gauntlet, and another hidden blade under the right sleeve. He uses it a lot when doing assassinations from a crouched position, he'll grab the legs of his enemy, pull them to the ground, and stab them with the right blade.
Plus, we see Jacob and Evie stab Crawford Starrick with blades on their right wrists during the final battle.
Late response I know, but there’s a scene in syndicate where you assassinate someone in parliament, and the unique kill, Jacob cuts their throat with 2 blades and you can see two of them on his wrist
I like to headcanon it that if assassins are going into long conflicts, like in AC rouge the Assassins and Templars are in open conflict so the Assassins would need any advantage over the Templars, but in Arnos case the French brotherhood and Templars were mostly at peace so they didn’t need to waste all those resources on a hidden blade
Altiar wrote the codex pages as he used the apple to see the past and look into the future as he modified both blades without a sacrifice of the ring finger as it would be more practical in use basically re writing the rules of the creed it would be nice to see again in the future
I think the idea of dual hidden blades is great and fits for brotherhoods in countries with an abundance of resources.
AC Shadows set in that era of Japan could be due to a lack of or how expensive materials are as well as the time to forge one. Maybe two is reserved for Masters who earned that second blade, being worthy of the craftsmanship and talent put into the craft of a second hidden blade tailored to the assassin themselves?
I agree. I prefer dual blades. One for each hand. They should bring that back in future games.
Love your video and keep up the great work you are awesome
Now if only Assassins could figure out how to Akiimbo hidden-guns
**BANG!**
I think arno for the air assassination he is using the sharp point of the phantom blade

I miss doing doing double assassination from Ac 2 to Syndicate
I miss being able to do it, but i also kind of like it being Unique to Ezio
1:02 *Byzantine Assassin not Ottoman.
The Ottomans weren't even around in the 9th century.
My favourite double blade kill is the Assassins T-Pose of supremacy
i did love the combat for using the blade/double blade
Shao Jun being the most immediate assassin in the series after Ezio (and even spending time with him), may have misread the memo on two blades before they got it all sorted out. (That said, I liked the footblade and apparently she's the inspiration for the Japanese brotherhood.)
What I'm about to ask has always been on my mind but has anyone notice that after each game the blade seems to be smaller? Altaïr's blade not only looks the longest (seems to almost take up his whole forearm) but the casing that holds the blade also moves a bit allowing for more extension and to use with a balled fist, Connor does the same but his blade is slightly smaller and is a pivot blade instead of what the Levantine brotherhood had. Now to the RPGs + Mirage, the blade barely extends past the tip of the finger. Bayek's is understandable, being one of, if not the first hidden blade. Eivor's blade extends far since it's on the other side of his arm but using Basim's outfit the extension is much smaller, same with Basim himself in Mirage. To me the blades are starting to look less lethal after each game.
I think the "dual blade air assassination" that Arno does does not have him use the blade but I'm pretty sure he brutally rips out their throats as implied by him seemingly forcing his hand forward instead of pulling it out
The double kills with the double hidden blades where so good, but they probably removed it in some games due to chain kill skill… not sure if that’s the reason. Also I loved the combat with the hidden blades in the older AC games.
I just noticed in this vid how Naoe hidden blade articulated
I mean, not having them before Altair is makes sense, since he made two blades a thing. So, technically the only games to really miss out on double blades is Shadows and Syndicate
Arnobused two hidden blades. He uses both of them in several of the double assassination animations, air and ground assassination. Fir some reason he just primarily uses his left one, im guessing he just conceals hur right one, but he does have it. He might have only used one in the lore, but several animations prove this to be false. So it could just be a continuity error on ubisofts end.
originally I thought it was Arno just ripping out the other guards throat but this seems more plausible
another thing could be that the double blades are combat blades, and shadows has combat and stealth divided
Aww, i wish you would have talked about Shao Jun and the Hidden blade on her foot. It is technically 2 hidden blades(unless she only had the footblade, its been a while since ive played ac chronicles China)
Maybe the custom for the East Asian Brotherhoods would be 1 hidden blade on the arm and one on the foot...
Maybe we see the 2nd hidden blade as a skill unlock or something, idk lol
Yeah Shao Jun only had one on her foot. She found it more useful as a woman and because of the reach it offered.
Hidden Hidden blade lol. Also I remember awhile back there was like an assassin's Creed Fan film series project or something. Called assassin's Creed generations where it was the modern day story following the group that tried saving Desmond but failed. Anyway why this relates is because in that fan made series there was a even more Hidden blade where it is installed in the skin on the flesh or something in form a a needle like blade. Was an interesting concept to say the least.
nothing beats the hook blade from the Ottoman Brotherhood. Definitely the best variation
They fit on Ezio, Edward, and Connor but that's it. No one else should have had them.
A single hidden blade is so much cooler and requires the developers to make creative and interesting stealth takedowns that are way more memorable. Just look at Arno's takedowns.
I really hope that Naoe only has a single one and doesn't get a second. So far she's looking to be by far my favorite protagonist in the series.
I think if where the leader for this I would definitely give it to all assassins given the versatility of it than being granted the rank master Assassin given would be limited to other, makes it a hassle and to me doesn’t add more weight is just two hidden blades
Given the challenges they face during their trials as a Assassin or before even being an Assassin
From what I could find and read of the lore it seems that the Chinese brotherhood was accustomed to one hidden blade on there wrist besides Shoa Jun who disliked the hidden blade on her wrist so she made/used the foot blade for herself. So I think since Kotetsu who was an apprentice of Shoa Jun in China before going on to making the new Japanese brotherhood he would have cared over his training, knowledge and tools from the Chinese brotherhood as well as Shoa Jun and started training the new Japanese's brotherhood with the same training, knowledge and tools. So that could explain why Noae only has one hidden blade instead of 2 or it could be that since it had only been a 100 years after Ezio discovered and started using the 2 hidden blades its knowledge and use had not spread and reached the other brotherhoods??
i liked the shooting form hidden blade
Arno has a hidden Blade in his right hand in the cinematic E3 trailer
Another possibility as to why Naoe doesn't have two hidden blades is because she's not officially part of the Japanese branch of Assassins.
Arno has the phantom blades, so he could just not shoot it but still pop it a little
While I do miss double hidden blades, I think unity did the best out of any game with the hidden blades just because of how badass the double assassinations are. I think every game that has single or double blades, fits the lore and I think that every game with a single blade has that kind of aesthetic and it feels right. Except Valhalla, I think that it makes total sense for Eivor to have two, maybe even (spoiler alert) taking Basim’s after trapping him in Valhalla. I do really hope double blades return in Hexe as it would make a lot of sense as it takes place only a century or two after the Ezio trilogy, where I think double blades would be a kind of trend.
I don't have a problem with not having dual hidden blades, since if you want to think of an Assassin as realistic as possible, like only in the franchise, since they were not using hidden blades in real life etc etc. They would only use one hidden blade, and only for assassinations for a specific enemy.
1. Think about assassinations where you were given a task, to kill only 1 man...and 1 hidden blade is enough for that
2. So many people complain about the fact that Ubisoft should bring back hidden blade fight (they will in Shadows, i'm curious how it will look like). It would be really hard to fight with dual hidden blades, since if you use the right hand hidden blade, then it would be impossible to fight since it's the sword hand. If two handed weapons are used then the hidden blade is not useable at all.
3. Hidden blades are not like swords or any kind of weapons, they would brake easily against a sword over time. A hidden blade should be only used for silent kills imo.
4. The hidden blade mechanism would require so much cleaning due to corrusion with blood
Hidden blade is can be used in battle. A great example is Haytham, he used hidden blade, but only his left one, and he used a sword, and his kills with the blade made sense, he aimed only for the neck/head with the blade wich is realistic. But like i said, it's pretty risky to use hidden blade in fight, due to many things that would ruin the mechanism and the blade
Ac2, brotherhood, revelations, 3, 4, rouge will give you many opportunities to achive a double kill, these games are built for it...even Ac syndicate and Unity but it's with one blade only...but you cant really make these enemies to stand next to each other on their own...it can be done, but Ac games where you can use double hidden blades, basically Ubisoft scripted two enemies to be next to each other
I dont want to be a smart🍑, and i really like the fact of being able to use two hidden blade, and in fight also, it's just we have those games, and we can still play them, it's completely okay that some games in this franchise are completely taking out, and adding features in games...if you think about it, it's good that every game in this franchise, have their own best thing
huh I feel like I was told by this by some RUclipsr that the reason why some assassins have dual or just a single hidden blade was mostly because of rank. Idk this is mostly years ago and I was like very young so I may had made it up. Essentially, master assassins are only allowed to have a double hidden blade and same thing why they wear black and red robes. Similar to how Ezio got the double and continues throughout the series since he became a master, then with connor it just defaults to him since he was the only assassin left in North America, then with Edward I just thought he killed an assassin with master rank, and then with Jacob and Evie I just kind a assumed that since the London Brotherhood was very small that they were allowed to wear double. Eitherway maybe whoever I got this from made it up or that I made this explanation up idk.
Also if you didn't know it wasn't Leonard who made it where you can keep your ring finger with the hidden blades it was Altair who did if you did know this it good for people who think this
Could Arno be using his phantom blade to kill the other guard in the air assassination?
Maybe Naoe can get a second blade in game like maybe when she fully joins the brotherhood
i hope naoe will have 2 hidden blades since it takes place after the ezio trilogy when 2 hidden blades were the custom
i always tried double blading guards in AC1 only to realize it isn't AC2

Could you make a video on the Assassin's traitor of ac revelations
1:00 They wouldn’t have been an Ottoman Assassin, but rather a Byzantine one, as the Ottomans didn’t exist in the 9th Century, the note says “Your Byzantine Brother”
Japan was just starting to open back up to the world I believe during the 16th century. So I don't think the custom of dual hidden blades was the norm during naoe's time. She could get a second hidden blade further in her story. But it unlikely. Be amazing though.
I’ve always thought the dual wield hidden blade was unique to the New World Assassins
There were No Ottomans in the 9th century…
Unpopular opinion it seems, I actually don't like double hidden blades much.
It makes the weapon looks (well litteraly) less unique, and personally not as cool to look at. Feels similar to Black Flag and the Animus reading non user's dna introducing to much possibilities for it's own good.
The concept doesn't make much sense as it would be a huge waste of ressources (even after hidden blades became cheaper to make). And it also lacks stability to be properly effective, like the way the blades so easily get stuck in necks always looked off to me, aside from the ground pinning assassinations. Unity proves how useless dual-wielding is and with incredibly stylish moves.
The original AC2 idea with two blades on one wrist sounds more logical (maybe to disarm and break weapons). Overall, I think it should have stayed as an Ezio gimmick like the hidden gun.
That being said, I'm French, so I guess I'm just like all these traditionalists from the Parisian Brotherhood....
