- My last GMMS (Great Monarchist Movie scenes) seems to have been popular so I decided to do another one.
I love this scene because it shows what most of us Monarchist wish Monarchs of today would do. It may yet happen, who know :)
I do not own anything in this video. All credit goes to rightful owners. For educational and entertainment purposes only.
Do you notice how Alec even did Charles' slight speech stammer? So good
Yeah. Method acting and historical accuracy.
Alec Guiness is so perfect in this scene, every word, every movement, every glimpse, this is overwhelming.
Indeed, he portrayed Charles I as a noble and honourable gentleman who wasn't evil but simply had different political ideas from Parliament and who believed in the divine right of monarchies to rule over their subjects.
Whether or not Charles I was actually like that is up for debate, I'm simply saying that Alec Guiness portrays him as being like that.
@@girlgarde It is a fairly accurate portrayal. Charles l is commonly regarded as a radical and brunt, yet noble king, who genuinely tried to be a good leader.
He wasn’t exactly a textbook gentleman, but he was no villain, and I think Mr Guiness portrays that perfectly.
@@Grandmaster_Dragonborn An elegant king for a more civilized monarchy.
@@MarcillaSmith nice jedi reference. 👍🏻
@@Grandmaster_Dragonborn Agreed.
The real-life Charles I was just as much in over his head as his dad James I since Parliament's agenda was at loggerheads with both Kings'.
He needed the speaker's chair so that he had the High Ground.
Wrong actor, but I see what you did there...
technically albus dumbledore has the higher ground here
You little misunderstood fellow, he did not get higher ground.
He get the chair because he is the one have a voice in the House of Commons.
The amount of swag both actors placed in these characters is amazing.
1:54 that ever so slight hint of pleasant surprise on his face. What a great actor.
Lovely little look of triumph when the King sees that Cromwell is in his seat. Great acting.
Sick broh how does the movie end
Charles' expression is one of shock and fear. Cromwell has chosen not to flee like the others. This means he does not fear the king.
And yet, Cromwell was not one of the people he called out. Hollywood dressing things up again.
King Charles I: "Arrest that man."
Parliament Member: "Arrest me and you will be in treason."
King Charles I: "Excuse me... do you not know what Kingdom this is? Do you not know what a Kingdom is? Do you not know how this land became a kingdom in the first place? Must I waste my time to teach you gentlemen the history of your own nation and country?"
Parliament Member: "We have rights."
King Charles I: "Those rights are granted as a privilege of the Crown, least you forget that history as well. Now arrest him."
Parliament Member: "Anyone who touches me... WILL... WILL BE... AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE!"
King Charles I: "You are not the King of England, gentleman."
Parliament Member: "Who here agrees with me!"
Parliament Majority: "YEAH! We have rights damn it."
King Charles I: "Very well. Parliament was established by the Crown and by my authority as the Crown, it is terminated, dissolved. You all have 24 hours to vacante the premise or my men will throw you out. Good day." *Walks out*
Is Charles I
@@diningroomtableYT You okay buddy?
@@sagittariusa7662 yes just letting you know that this is Charles the first not the second
The English throne conceded that the rights are NOT privilege of the crown when it signed the Magna Carta in 1215-- Cromwell's judicial rights come from God by virtue of being a freeman.
@@williammcguire130 The Magna Carta was overturned and this was permitted by the Pope and it was also under the Pope's authority that the Magna Carta was signed in the first place. England seceded from the Catholic Church. So no matter how you look at it, it is a void document.
when God save the king intensifies.
I quite liked the dramatic showdown between Oliver Cromwell and King Charles I, it made for some good drama even if it never actually happened.
Also, this scene makes the two men look like two honourable gentlemen who cared about England but clashed due to political differences.
Good analysis.
We'd all have been better off if he'd gone on & arrested Cromwell. Certainly Ireland would have been happier about it.
Dude I heard he slaughtered a big part of Irish history and people for no other reason then they where like fuck u we loyal to the pope even know we all know the Irish mix there Catholic and peahen religious together I mean look at there crosses they all have the Celtic symbols on them they intertwined both
The icing on the cake is if Charles were to take the staff with him as he swaggered out.
Obi Wan Kenobi looks a bit different here
So does Dumbledore
Mr Speaker. Where are these gentlemen?
I would like to suggest King Haakon's speech in "The King's Choice" which starts at 1:51:40 and ends at 1:55:18 in the movie. There is a translation error in the english subs at 1:53:01 where the sub say "Will" while King Haakon says "I will not". I also recommend you to watch the movie, It's quite touching.
Watched it before! Yes, I agree. Great movie.
I'm scotch Catholic I venerate Charles 1 so do some Anglican bros , Charlie boy sends a chill down my spine ⚜️🏴
So, this scene is recreated, somewhat, every time the house of parliment is officially opened. Right down to the door being slammed in someone's face, and the three raps on the door.
Goosebumps. I fanaticism about Elizabeth or Charles in the future reclaiming their Royal Prerogative just for the sake of seeing it happen.
@Patchworth JACOBITES FOREVER
Imagine people struggling for the whole 2 centuries to abolish monarchism in favor of establishing national states and institutes ( you know this little thing as every individuals rights for private property, suffrage and many other things) so that one day someone says "I want to go back be -monkey- peasant!"
@@masterofoffending3908 It's kinda scary to me how many people I'm discovering there are through this channel that are genuinely, unironically monarchists in the 21st century. Like, literally thinking a dictatorship would be all nice and lovely to live in because the dictator is charismatic and looks like Alec Guiness... is democracy being generally good actually such a debated topic in 2023? I guess I shouldn't be too surprised, but still... yikes....
@@thevenator3955 Well I personally deem a word "dictator" a very political termin used to call literally any politic you don't like. The monarchy is about strict social segregation and immaturity of ruling system (this one is more about early monarchism ofcourse however some traits could be seen till the wery end of the monarchial era).
@@masterofoffending3908 I know what you mean about “dictatorship” having negative connotations, but a dictator by definition is where one individual is the sole leader without any potential for democratic input once they’re in charge. A king is just a dictator with the power being hereditary.
What finally got dissolved was the connection between Charles' head and shoulders.
0:26 till 0:48 the sound of true Democracy
I just hear noise--the same noise in America that elected our three most recent Presidents and their silly catchphrases.
Then that is why you are on this channel
American monarchist here, that is exactly what democracy sounds like! NO REST TILL CORONATION!
@Terra White dont get me wrong. Democracy is needed, just not on such a big scale. Infact even during the time of the Roman empire they stil held local elections. just not national ones
@@bradleyhoyt3188 "American monarchist" is an oxymoron. It cannot exist. You are either one or the other.

Did he just remove all he's parliament members?
Yes.this would be the main cause of the English Civil war.
God bless Charles I
So be it (Jedi).
God save the King, can we disband the current House of Commons,
It's Her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at the moment, good sir!
no
@@eugene7145 Why not?
Delightfully unapologetic and great fun as posts. Rule Britannia is the ideal and stirring door opening on these memorable moments providing, just the right hint of playful satire. Alas the KIng didn't do himself strategic credit here but it makes for a dramatic scene. I like the way the shouting turmoil comes to a sudden halt with hats off as the King glides in gracefully. Guinness is ideally cast as the King while I expect Harris is too, in his own wooden way - unblinking, blank stares and hoarse throated tantrums.
Parliament may be dissolved, but they'll soon be back...and in greater numbers.
You came away with this impression this was a monarchies movie?
Love it!
Now if only we can get Heads of State which can behave in a polite, yet firm manner like this. In America we have a tabloid star who fights on Twitter.
still better then a corrupt lying bitch :)
Long gone and sorely missed the good old days when we used to murder millions overseas, politely with a smile and "presidential" demeanor. Whatever happened to the good old fashioned firm manners that justified our Federal Reserve printing money out of thin air?

@@52memor Treason is Treason. Rising againt the King was wrong! That's the Law! The House of Commons ILLEGALY declared their supremacy!
@@52memor No God, eh? On what evidence?
Cromwell talking about treason and crimes against humanity 😂
From his POV the King has over stretched his authority and he's entitled to call him out on it. This long before Cromwell becomes general of the army and goes into Ireland to put down rebellions.
*This movie’s producers truly made a historical adaptation as if William Shakespeare wrote it*
“All the trees said to the thornbush, Come and be our king. But the thornbush said to the trees, ‘If you really want to make me king over you, come and find shelter in my shade. But if you don’t want to do this, let fire come out of the thornbush! Let the fire burn even the cedar trees of Lebanon!” --Judges 9:7-21
Would’ve probably picked bagpipes for King Charles since him and his house were Scottish.
@Pete Maloney i call bs
They were Anglo-Normans I believe, although legends says that they were descended from the famed Banquo.
What my counterpart said a few years ago is true: "The King who has every right is the one who is right!" And this scene actually shows a historic display of the royal prerogative in a slight exaggeration but shows the primacy of it.
When king enters all shep become silence

I never realized they were the same person. Mind blown.
Wait how'd that turn out for him tho?
HE SACKED THEM AND Re- Ruled Again BUT IT WENT to CIVIL WAR 😮g
Would it not be out of order for him to make motions while in a sedentary position?
Why didn't they seize Cromwell after Charles had the parliament dissolved?
Because historically the five members are John Hampden, Arthur Haselrig, Denzil Holles, John Pym, and William Strode. The movie bent history in order to tell a more straightforward narrative
@@geraldchildress6049 cool, thanks
Why didn't he arrest him after dissolving the Parliament? Why such generosity?
Members of Parliament are protected from prosecution for certain acts deemed part of their official responsibilities, lest the monarch get the idea he could have them arrested for merely doing their job in a way opposed to his will.
Favourite scene in the movie.
It's amazing how civil and orderly the House of Commons used to be. I know the Brits are serious about their traditions, but this is still no reason to slam the door on the sweet elderly great-grandmother who opens the Parliament.
Very true, we are very lucky they had a camera back then
It's every reason to keep it shut tbh

Of the highest order.
Not exactly what happened but a good scene
Fun fact: Charles never mention Cromwell

Obi wan be like: I love democracy
The only source of authority for a government is the consent of the governed. Nobody has a right to govern absent that consent.
The people rightly removed Charles I from the throne; their only mistake was in tolerating Cromwell's rule afterward.
Traitor! A monarch is the only authority that can bind a country in one united soul. After unity comes government.
@@Banff454park Clearly not considering how many republics we have today, and especially considering this monarch is best known for a civil war lol. And traitor to what? Charles has been dead for a couple centuries bro
All authority comes from God, not men. Your idea of authority is little more than public opinion which was in this case manipulated by a cabal of Puritans to install a failed dictator over the populace, who failed so miserably that following said dictator's death the people restored to the throne the rightful king and all 20 of those traitors who murdered their rightful lord were given justice at the gallows.
@@johnded3874 - Nobody gave Charles the right to rule against the will of the people.
And I never praised Cromwell.
@@florbfnarb7099 Before Charles I was king, James I and Elizabeth I reigned. Who were the people that gave either of them the right to rule? The monarch begin their reign as soon as the previous monarch's death is announced.
Other than Magna Carta and the constitutional convention that the monarch must call Parliament to raise taxes, the principles of a liberal democracy didn't exist in England during this period.

Yes, yes but did this actually happen, how do we know?
Because the British are well-known for their archives and preservation of Parliament records and the legal library of statutory, common law, and constitutional law.
The filmmakers took some artistic liberties, but this is mostly historically accurate and has become part of the ceremony of the State Opening of Parliament.

Revolutions are rarely motivated by democracy. While the film may make it seem like the break was over the rights of parliament, it was fundamentally a religious argument. Had Charles not married a Catholic or had she converted the civil war would never had occurred. It’s also true that he was fundamentally untrustworthy and downright slimy, which didn’t make him unique among kings but certainly didn’t make him popular. Charles had the unfortunate qualities of a terrible boss: autocratic, vane, inflexible, and incapable of telling good advice from bad.
All the letters in 'moron' appear in 'monarchist'. Coincidence? I think not!

And this tyrant wonders why he would lose his head? Stupidity or arrogance.
Is there any lower form of life than a monarchist?
The protectorate and dictatorship that existed during the English Republic after the monarchy had been abolished.
A great monarchist scene? Charles failed to arrest the 5 and he was chased out of London. Get this shit out of here.
Cromwell and his followers committed TREASON! They had the King executed! The House of Commons ILLEGALLY declared their own supremacy! This shouldn't have been done! For even at his trial, Charles asked by what authority he was here! Bradshaw couldn't even answer the question properly! The fact is: the King was the King. His execution was terrible. Consequently, when his son, Charles II became King, some of those who signed Charles I death warrant were either executed or imprisoned. Also, the dead body of the traitor Cromwell was hung and beheaded and impailed onto a stake! Moreover, at the Trail, Thomas Fairfax's wife shouted, "he had more wit than to be there." And he led some of the army during the Civil War AGAINST Charles I!
@@DavidAmis2005
Charles' trial had all the legitimacy of the kangaroo trials he himself imposed on his political enemies.
@@DavidAmis2005 yeah Cromwell was not a good guy in the slightest, but Charles Ist was tyrannical and forced Anglicanism on the Scotts, closed down parliament multiple times before the civil war and spent so much money on his wars that he had to reopen parliament to raise taxes. And so parliament refused because of his previous instances with parliament, they decided to not raise taxes for his war against his own people(the Scottish).
and about the treason thing, I don't care what you think about monarchy, if the king is a tyrant and kills his own people, needlessly dissolves parliament for no agreeing with him and shattering his fragile ego, he deserves to be put on trial. He was given several chances to have a compromise, HELL even the roundheads were very unsure whether they should kill their king because he was the king after all.
Charles was a whining pathetic loner who was not cared about when he grew up, he was never loved and when he became king he unleashed his insecurities upon his people with his "muh divine right lolz"
The house of commons had the right to fight against Charles Ist when Charles was shutting them down and acting as a tyrant. Cromwell wasn't a good guy for his contempt for culture, but Charles Ist wasn't any better
