    For number 10, it just occurred to me that Ellie does the exact same thing that the NPCs do when they beg for mercy, TWICE. She gets curbstomped, gets spared, then when she’s free she just bumrushes back after them. And then she does it again. She’s that NPC. Almost makes me wonder if that’s what they intended when they put in that mechanic.

    In Final Fantasy 6, showing mercy to Lone Wolf can get you a Gold Hairpin but screws you out of recruiting Mog. You should never show mercy to anyone holding cute cuddly creatures hostage in the first place!

    • @azalago
      @azalago Год назад +7

      It's less a case of showing mercy and more a case of choosing who to save, Lone Wolf or Mog. Lone Wolf falls either way and ends up surviving, you just don't get the relic if you choose to save Mog. The worst part is the Gold Hairpin is extremely useful since it halves the MP cost of all magic spells.

    • @shenloken2
      @shenloken2 Год назад +4

      It can be countered though when you get the Celestiad from a Brachiosaur reducing MP cost to 1. They’re somewhat hard to get but thankfully with a good team setup these enemies fall rather easily.

      Also the Asari scientist that was working in Sarens krogan cloning lab in ME 1 is a good example.

      Then in 3 you find out that being around sarens facility was enough to indocteinate her and she assasinates a bunch of high profile people who were organizing resistance to the reapers before also killing herslef.

    In Megaten, you can have good outcomes by being merciful, it depends if their are good or evil, your level and the moon phase. So it s more complicated than what Falcon says when it s arbitrary.

    Except you get the best armor in Elden Ring if you keep sparing Patches. And your "punishments" are getting sent to areas you would have ended up on your own anyways. There is literally no benefit to killing him.

    • @ricardodarcangelo2437
      @ricardodarcangelo2437 Год назад +4

      True. More importantly, the teleport to Volcano manor is a good way to save time, and get to better smiting stones faster.
      I think this Patches is more a subversion of expectations, than a backstabber

    • @Amins88
      @Amins88 Год назад +3

      Also, if you're role playing as a "good" character, the teleport is the only way to fight Rykard without having to go through the murderous Volcano Manor questline. Granted, you don't actually need Patches' advice for that if you know what you're doing, but lorewise, he's at least "technically" correct with what he tells you.

    With The Last of Us Part 2 they could have EASILY made that game mechanic matter. Have Ellie show mercy throughout the game, and the ending makes sense. Have her ruthlessly murder everyone.. get an ending where her rage, and hatred consumed her. Which could have made the game way better better.

      When joel did what he did. we didnt get a choice. So why should we get choice now?
      TLOU is not a choice game. Its about the characters and their emotional complex...this mechanic they could have dropped it. It messes with the dehumanization aspect of factions in the story, but other than that, i have no problem with it. It rarely happens...

      Ellie didn’t let Abby go because of mercy. She did it because Abby had no value to her once she realized killing her would not solve her trauma. That’s why she broke down on the beach.

    Not sure if these count but in Dragon Age 2 if you show Marethari mercy during the quest A New Path then you'll have to fight the boss again with Merrill injured because Marethari stabs her, though the boss will only have 1/3 of the health it had instead of full health. Also in Fallout 4 if you spare Danse during Blind Betrayal, then any time you have Danse as your companion the Brotherhood of Steel will attack you on sight.

    Regarding that first one with Last of Us Pt 2.
    In Call of Duty WWII's campaign, there will be moments where the Nazi soldiers will actually SURRENDER and the game actually suggests that you just take them in and capture them, instead of well...gun down a soldier, (even if it's a Nazi), who is surrendering. If you capture them, you don't get a bullet in the back for it. In fact I think the game sort of rewards you in some capacity for doing that. (Like an achievement maybe, it's been years).

    The mercy situation in TLOU2 doesn't just make the contrived story even more contrived but is inherently contrived itself because the game doesn't give you the option to take their weapons. It means either Ellie is an idiot who spares heartless terrorists without taking their weapons or she uses basic common sense by just killing them but gets portrayed as a monster by the story for doing it.

    Game developers do this because hundreds of thousands of people have been brainwashed by the very phrase you mentioned: No good deed goes unpunished.
    Well, we simply need to stop thinking like that and instead think: No evil deed goes unpunished and All good deeds get rewarded.
