Not only this is the first time we see the ALC in revenue service, but is also the first time we hear the K5LA horn for the ALC which in my opinion sounds really really awesome!
@CoasterFan2105 I'm glad Siemens didn't change the color of the locomotive headlights because, in my opinion and yellow lights fit the ALC better, but that's just me
@@GamingRailfanner also called Nathan K5LA (MP is a division of Nathan and some papers are called as Nathan K5LA instead of Micro Precision)....Chargers with K5LA is good, compared to Avelia that has TGV-based horn
Holy smokes, the first run for the Amtrak ALC-42 Charger locomotives. I plan to go to Dallas next weekend, just to say goodbye to the P42DC locomotives. Awesome video man!
The Ditchlights of the ALC-42 have a point where their both off, I have no idea why Siemens made the ditchlights have a delay, but Regardless, It looks great
I noticed that as well, just a fraction of a second between the two unlike every other engine I've ever seen. Wonder if there is a specific reason for it. I do like that new livery.
@@peterfrank29 I wonder if it might be the camera catching the fraction of seconds that they’re both off, but in person, it’s not that noticeable. Although, there’s always the option to program it better.
Worth the change of schedule though, having Train Talk be postponed in replacement of the debut run of my favorite engine. I'd really love to see this locomotive in the next Train Talk episode.
Having lived in California, I remember the Chargers replacing the F59 PHIs on the Surfliner. Because they are so much sleeker, I thought they were a lot longer and shorter than a P42, but the size difference is negligible. I guess being coupled to a Surfliner car also adds to that illusion.
Going to be seeing lots of Siemens this year. Amtrak Midwest just put its first Siemens Venture passenger cars into revenue service on the Illinois Service Chicago to St. Louis train as well. Looked strange though as it still had an Amfleet Cafe/Business Class car in the consist, disrupting the streamlined Charger/Venture profile. Evidently they don't have any Cafe/Business cars yet.
According to the NGEC board, business class will arrive later this year, but cafes are not scheduled to enter service until early 2024. No idea why the two-year delay, but I guess they’re leaving since nobody else has ordered cafes yet, not even VIA. Also worth noting business and cafe cars come in married pairs like all other Ventures: either business-cafe or business-coach, so maybe that’s another reason.
But I'm really mad right now because 301 blew her lead because her PTC systems were having issues and P42DC #84 had to lead the train to Portland. I just hope I can see 301 or other ALC42s actually Leading.
Boy, you filmed and edited this video quick! Great job, Mike. I like the look of the new ALC-42s, but I will greatly miss the chug of the Genesis units. Knowing Amtrak, I'm sure they'll preserve a couple.
Awesome catches The ALC-42 is quickly becoming one of my favorite engines from Amtrak but i am gonna miss the GE Genesis but hopefully Amtrak Will preserve some of them
Multiple museums and tourist lines will undoubtedly get their hands on them. Hell, maybe Metra will want some. They already took on the Surfliner and Cascades F59s, and 217 is an ex-Amtrak F40.
I really hope the cold weather issues are figured out quick and these engines have a great long service with Amtrak. Great looking engine, can’t wait until them and the Venture cars become more commonplace around the country.
Great catches of the new locomotives the ALC-42 it’s a really cool locomotive I know that soon it will be replacing the P32AC-DMs and P40s and 42s in the Northeast too!
At least there's a bunch of other rail lines using the Genesis now. I still hope that amtrak would save some for the sake of preservation though. With the sheer amount of rolling stock that Amtrak has used over the years, they could open a pretty decent museum.
Problem is that 2/8's train did not leave Chicago with 301 and 302 leading. They had to add a GE at Chicago to lead as the PTC failed to function. It was a failed first trip before they even left CUS. The train was then plagued by HEP issues and a minor electrical fire of some sort less than 20 miles out of Chicago, leading to the lounge car being set out in Milwaukee.

OMG WOW!!! I cannot believe that I’m seeing it in service. Thanks for creating this video!!! I really hope the ALC-42 gets new phase 5 coaches in the future like when the P42DC replaced the F40PH.. the P42DC was phase 3 for a while but then it changed phase along with the coaches. Phase 5 coaches would look a lot better on the ALC-42s.
I caught the Portland section here in Pasco that morning. of course had to wait 3 hours after delays constantly emerged and a dead bird was on the front of 84
Wow the New ALC looks great especially when it used its horn, im also going to asume that its only going to be for empire builder and thats all, until further updates
The alc-42 is the fastest diesel electric in USA to have existed with a top speed of 125 mph, however there were some different alc class locomotive are in amtrak.
The ALC-42 is the newer variant of the Siemens Charger with the SC-44 being the original. All locomotives are powered by a Cummins 16-cylinder QSK95 4-stroke high speed diesel engine, which meets United States Environmental Protection Agency’s more stringent Tier 4 emissions standards that took effect in 2015. The SC-44’s horsepower is shockingly greater than the ALC-42: 4,400 hp (3,300 kW) versus the ALC-42’s 4,200 hp (3,100 kW). But the ALC-42 has bigger fuel tanks to go longer distances and reduce the times the engine has to refuel. The maximum speed in service is 125 mph (201 km/h). In response to a 2013 Request for Information from Metro-North Railroad, Siemens said they would be capable of producing a dual-mode variant of the Charger with onboard energy storage for use by Metro-North and the Long Island Rail Road, as well as intercity service on Amtrak’s Empire Corridor. The locomotive shares much of its overall design with the Siemens Vectron diesel and electric locomotives used in Europe and the Siemens ACS-64 electric locomotive built for Amtrak. Metro-North’s variant is an SC-42DM for dual-mode. There are five variants of the Charger, tailored for different operators and types of service: ALC-42 for Amtrak long-distance service, ALC-42E dual-mode for Amtrak inter-city and long-distance routes that serve the Northeast Corridor, SC-44 for Amtrak state-supported inter-city service or commuter rail operators SCB-40 for Brightline inter-city service, SCV-42 for VIA Rail inter-city service in Canada and SC-42DM for Metro-North commuter rail operations or inter-city service. The first production Charger, a SC-44, was unveiled on March 26, 2016 and entered revenue service on August 24, 2017. It was followed by the SCB-40, which inaugurated Brightline service on January 13, 2018. The first ALC-42, No. 300, was delivered to Amtrak on June 17, 2021 and entered revenue service on February 8, 2022, on the westbound Empire Builder, with 50th Anniversary “Day One” heritage unit No. 301, which is painted almost all black, with one blue stripe going halfway along the sides. The Charger is often paired with Venture passenger cars, also built by Siemens, as part of a train set. They were extensively tested in the Midwest and on the Empire Builder route.
