Canciones Clásicas Españolas: I. La mi sola, Laureola
    Joan Ponce, XVI Century
    Translated by Lisette Oropesa
    SPANISH:
    La mi sola Laureola
    La mi sola, Laureola
    La mi sola, sola, sola…
    Yo el cautivo Leriano
    Aunque mucho estoy ufano
    Herido de aquella mano
Que en el mundo es una sola.
    La mi sola Laureola
    La mi sola, sola, sola.
    ENGLISH:
    My one and only Laureola
    My one and only, Laureola
    My one and only, only...
    I the captive Leriano
Even though I am very vain
    Hurt by that hand
That in the world is only one.
    My one and only Laureola
    My one and only, only.

Ah what beautiful rendition! How lonely I felt the poor Laureola, in the sadness of your voice, and that last note, ending in an unexpected major tonality, how it shone a ray of light on solitude and abandonment, so that one could briefly forget how life erodes us all!

The composer's clever finesse of turning the old Spanish ("la mi sola" Laureola = "she, my only/lonely" Laureola) into the first four plaintive notes of the canción --la, mi, sol, la = A, E, G, A'--, could have remained just that, an artistic conceit, were it not for the measured, meditative tone in which your voice, like a sorrowful viola (lighter than a cello, graver than a violin) transforms the 4-note motiv into a beggar's plea--till the rise into the sudden beam of sunlight of that final major chord... So Schubertian...

Temps Perdu isn’t that interesting?! Genius! And not a lot of languages can pull it off and make sense
