F-16 vs MiG-29 - The Last Air Battle of Operation Allied Force

  • NATO operation called Allied Force commenced on 24 March 1999. Serbian MiG-29 fighters initially tried to confront NATO strike groups but no success was achieved while five fighters were lost. It is now 4 May 1999, the operation is still underway but Serbian MiGs haven't tried to takeoff for weeks. However, political pressure will result in a single fighter taking off from Batajnica airbase. The MiG-29 is flown by the CO of 204th Fighter Regiment, Colonel Milenko Pavlović. Not willing to send any of his subordinates to almost certain death, he personally takes off to face a superior force.
NATO strike groups are defended by USAF F-16s. They play dual role, protecting them from fighters and surface-to-air missiles. Michael 'Dog' Geczy leads one of two F-16 flights. After the first strike group finishes the attack, F-16s turn away to escort them out. At that moment, AWACS calls bogey in the air. Geczy's group, although low on fuel turns to meet the threat.

I feel bad for Col. Pavlovic. He took the risk so the pilots under his command wouldn’t be needlessly killed. That is true leadership from the front. Fhis man, Milenko Pavlovic... he was clearly a very brave and at least on this occasion an honorable man.
*facing the American F16s, which to be fair at the time of the engagement, were arguably the tightest turning aircraft in the skies, really was certain death.*
Deciding to step up and protect his subordinates may not be the most appropriate thing as an officer, (officers are conditioned at officer training to understand that losing men under your command is part of warfare. And, as an officer, he may have failed in this respect), yet I have little regard for those who could waste lives on an operation that clearly is not necessary, or even smart strategically.
*I have not heard of this man, and as an American I say RESPECT to you Pavlovic, you were a true hero.*
"...no greater love hath a man than to lay down his own life for his friends."
Thanks for sharing this interesting story, the young men today could learn from his actions, and from the futility of a War that should NEVER have happened.
*Peace... it always a good day to give it another chance!*

He was a commander of the fighter unit flying Mig29s. There were rumors that he was under great preassure to get some air kills with his units. 3 Mig29s were lost on the first night, 2 more a few days later. NATO outranged the A-A weapons Migs ad by far and none of the shot down Migs fired a missile before being shot down. On this day he literally pulled much younger and inexperienced pilot out of the cockpit of a plane on alert with (paraphrading) : "You stupid kid, you are not ketting killed, its my task". The misdion itself was to try to catch up leaving strike package and try to score a kill from behind using radar guided R-27R missile with 20-30km range. He was spoted by an AWACS and 4 F16s covering the package were vectored to intercept. He was killed over his home town, with 2 AMRAAMs scoring hits. Slava mu!

Yet, my only point negatively was that according to his superiors, I'm sure they didn't intend for him to sacrifice himself for the other guys under him.
*In this respect, he deserves ALL OF OUR RESPECT AND RECOGNITION,* for, it is easy to sit in our comfortable environs and spout brave words, yet when it is time to put your life on the line, and willingly step into the oblivion of death, that is another matter.

The freed up Ammo storage space contained hi-speed video recorder for each camera.

Minor point. The Squadron badge on the RAF Tornado denotes No. 2 Squadron. They were equipped for Tactical Reconnaissance, having a downward looking Infra Red Camera and two SLIRs (Sideways Looking Infra Red) in place of the Guns. The freed up ammunition storage areas contained Hi-speed video recorders for each of the cameras. They would not have been part of an attack package, although they may have been sent in afterwards for damage assessment.

    "NATO SQUADRON ABOVE VALJEVO,
    4. MAY NINETY-NINE,
ME IN THE PLANE 16 ON 1,
I DEFEND MY PEOPLE AND I MUST NOT SURRENDER!
    I HEAR NOTHING IS RIGHT,
RENADES ARE FLYING ATTACKING US AGAIN FROM THE SKY,
ME IN THE PLANE 16 ON 1,
LONG LIVE SERBIA I WILL NOT SURRENDER!
They're ready to target that factory,
destroy the city, they say they also have tactics.
Damn them, the children will not die!!!
I get on the plane and start the machine.
The radar has failed and the sky is on fire,
run away cowards you are not welcome here
I will give my life, let it hurt me!
I'm going after them, I'm not afraid of anything.
I attack bravely, I will try to break them,
there are so many I almost can't count them.....
So they run away even if there are 16 of them,
and I have them, but they also have me......"

If you are just taking off on a more or less routine patrol you do not use them as they burn a lot of fuel that you could otherwise use to extend the mission duration.

In different circumstances, they could have done some damage. But not without support of AWACS, ECM airplanes etc.

Thanks for commenting! Well, circumstances were usually against the MiGs. They are inferior in some aspects but generally, they were flown by less trained pilots and lacked AWACS support.

Because only the early 80's A models were used in combat by mostly smaller countries in small quantity with poor maintenance and pilot training against overwhelming air superiority by opposition forces with up to date technology and good pilots. It is not hard to fail in these circumstances.
