I feel like my Grammaw made a similar pie. But, she called it a custard pie. Also, those little multicolored bowls look like Fiesta Ware. It was made in Newell, West Virginia from 1936 to 1973. And from 1985 to present. It's quite collectable....Not at all relevant to the video, but a little piece to Appalachian history lol. Thank you for all your hard work with these videos!

And the sweet milk is about gone and I haven’t given the cat her nightly bowl of warm milk so l can’t use the sweet milk.

My grandmother swore by a meal of buttermilk and cornbread, all crumbled up and in a tall glass. She often used a quart Mason jar even though it was only about half full. Sometimes she made it sweet and sometimes she didn’t. She said it was her favorite when she was feeling peckish.

I had never heard of buttermilk pie until college when one of my suite mates mentioned missing his grandmother’s cooking. There was no Internet in the ‘60’s, but a trip to the cookbook collection in the Home Economic department’s library produced a couple of versions. I think it is more flavorful than the standard custard pie; we prefer a little ground allspice to nutmeg.
Those colorful little dishes are indeed a treasure.

A favorite way of having buttermilk in my family is to pour buttermilk into a glass and then put a big slice of cornbread into the glass of buttermilk, and then use a spoon to eat the buttermilk and cornbread. Sometimes a slice of cracklin cornbread is added to the buttermilk. Is this done in your area ? Cornbread and buttermilk have been eaten this way in Henderson County Tennessee for well over a hundred years. I forgot to comment on your videos about a favorite dessert and the peanut butter cookies. Do you have a family recipe for tea cakes ? We have a very old family recipe for tea cakes which apparently came from North Carolina over the Cumberland Gap and then into Tennessee where my family settled in about 1820. I absolutely love how you used the old southern expression “ store bought “, how familiar that expression is to me !

You may already know this, but apparently modern buttermilk is indeed different from what buttermilk used to be. You can get a powdered form of buttermilk that the maker claims is powdered "real" buttermilk as opposed to a powdered version of the new stuff. I personally can't taste the difference between the powdered original buttermilk and the new fake buttermilk you get from the supermarket, but I still keep the powdered version around because it doesn't go bad quickly like the liquid version.

    • @bsdnfraje
      @bsdnfraje 3 года назад

It isn't 'fake' so much as different. Granny's buttermilk was the liquid left behind after the butter was churned out. Store bought is 'european style cultured buttermilk'. its the first step in the cheesemaking process for a good number of cheeses. Its thick because, like yogurt, its lactose is being converted to other acids and sugars.

Even the stores that used to have little events* where you saved up points to get a set of dishes don't do that anymore. It's a shame

REAL BUTTERMILK... sigh, I dream of it. But sometimes I do splurge and buy the local dairy’s buttermilk in a glass bottle which does have cream on top. STORE BOUGHT PIE CRUST NEVER! I’d rather have no crust, so I was glad you showed how you use “extra” pie filling cuz that’s how I make pumpkin pie when I don’t wanna make crust. Yum!

David-I don't remember for sure but I think I cooked them about 15-20 minutes. You'll be able to tell they're done when the turn a little brown on top and are slightly firm. Thanks for watching 😀

I have my Grandma‘a Buttermilk Pie recipe. She grew up very poor in Hazard KY. Her parents owned a small restaurant called “The Thimble Grill” back in the early 1900’s. I also have her BBQ recipe and the BBQ sauce recipe they served there. I believe this pie was on the dessert menu there.
    Simpler times for sure!

First time I had it was on a working Texas ranch west of Houston. When they said would you like some buttermilk pie, I was like there is no such thing, I thought I had heard of every pie possible, but it was extremely good, if you ever see it on a menu or home made I would recommend trying it.

Here are a few pie ideas that may lineup with Appalachia:
Rhubarb Pie - many people used to plant them, a very sour to taste plant that is very hardy
Mulberry Pie - you have to beat the birds to the berries
Gooseberry Pie - grows wild mostly, catch them at the peak of ripeness
Rhubarb and Strawberry Pie - because in the springtime it can get cold enough to snow, frost which can harm the berries, they throw straw on the. Hence the name.
Wild raspberry pie - well let’s just say wading into a thorny mass of raspberries red or black is not ideal fun, but if you can get enough for a whole pie well worth the effort, wear the carhartt jack and some leather gloves.
Boysenberry Pie - I seen it occasionally, but if you have wild ones you are in good shape
Well there are a few less common pies that are low cost but very satisfying . My two cents I kinda prefer not mixing every berry you can find into a pie with a few exceptions.

For the best buttermilk, buy two one-half cartons of sweet milk. One will be your sweet milk. The other one will be buttermilk. Remove one cup of the carton and exchange it with a cup of fresh buttermilk and tighten lid and shake to fully blended. Place in warm area over night (back porch or stoop). Next morning you have buttermilk. Now refrigerate. Never buy buttermilk again.

This is somewhat like what we call Sugar Cream Pie in Indiana, except the recipe calls for regular milk instead of buttermilk. But, I’m here to tell you, I would eat either one. It is my favorite pie. ❤️👍🏻🥧

My Mom was never much of a cook but she was an excellent Baker and Buttermilk Pie was one of her favorites. I pretty much think my Granny was both the best cooker and Baker of sweets until health said stop the sweets. BUT, my Aunt Louise made the best biscuits & gravies ever, she cooked for the railroad cafe for many years. Loved their Breadburgers but then all things tastes better as a childs memories of home cooking. Pity the poor girl who marries that country boy and can't cook.😁😋

My Granny would make a sweet bread very similar to this, except she didn't split the batter, it baked in a single iron skillet and made a thicker cake. My favorite way to eat it was warm from the oven with butter. And yes, we called those knives "case knives" as well.
I enjoy your videos so much; they trigger so many happy memories and help me recreate many of the wonderful foods my Granny used to cook that I didn't think to write down while she was still with us. Keep up the good work; you're helping many of us keep our own family traditions alive by sharing yours with us. God bless you, always in all ways.

That Kitchenaid mixer of yours sounds like it's too loud! There's an easy fix to that if you're interested. The gearboxes of them things is supposed to be completely filled with "food grade" grease.Over the years it kind of leaks out,so get yourself some "food grade" grease, clean all the old stuff out and smear as much "food grade" in there, and it takes plenty, until there's no room for anything but a tiny amount of air!You will absolutely have the quietest mixer in all the land!

I don’t like cultured buttermilk but my mama loved to crumble up cornbread in a big glass buttermilk. I don’t like it but when I make butter from heavy cream the byproduct is fresh buttermilk and it is delicious. You should try it. I love your videos. It reminds me of home and family

I know there must be a disagreement in your family occasionally but it doesn’t show, all y’all do so many things together with your music, gardening, cooking and many more. I sin with envy every time I watch one of your videos. With one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel it’s too late for me to start over. I have a daughter and her family in North Carolina, the gorgeous hills of Appalachia and the Great Smokies are certainly Gods country. Keep up the wonderful videos and your family music, your daughters are a real treat with their harmony. Mike (Michigan)

Every time I see a thumbs down on one of your videos all I can do is picture some pompous, arrogant, big city dweller thumbing their nose in disgust at the poor, dirty, uneducated, Appalachians. It seems to me that a lot of people really believe that stereotype about us. Of course most of those that believe that stereotype wouldn't be able to survive two days alone in the woods of Appalachia without technology, a six pack of energy drinks, and a snack bar. Enough of the rant, I'll continue watching your video now. 🤣
