Although many people seem to not enjoy this remake, I still think Jackie Earle Haley did a good job on portraying a much darker version of Freddy Kruger. Englund is still the the Kruger we all know and love, but I also think that Haley did an amazing performance when it comes to the darker tones of the film.
I agree it’s one of the best nightmare/Freddy movies.

"What doesn't kill you, usually succeeds in the second attempt." - Mr. Krabs
Guess he was right.
But what did that have to do with making krabby patties?
So let me get this straight. They made a remake of an iconic horror movie without consulting the guy who made the original? No wonder they haven't touched the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise since this movie.
Well, the franchise rights are now back with Wes Craven's estate, and they are planning a second remake.
Really?
That's what they did with Star Wars
@@beavis8073 not really? George Lucas was consulted, JJ Abrams just ignored his advice.

In my opinion, the 'oh God. No, just me' is easily the best line. Something about it is just so cruel. Love or hate this film you gotta admit Jackie Earl Haley did a great job at portraying a monstrous and cruel freddy
I like his portrayal too.
Fair, but you can’t compete with “Please god!” “THIS is god!”
Freddy just went from being a psychotic killer to a straight up monster. Killing kids is standard for a psycho, but diddling them is when it goes too far

It makes him just that much more revolting. It wasn't just the visuals that got an upgrade.
I always thought it was kind of implied before that he abused kids too, but this movie is full on Freddy Epstein.

Microsleeps are a realistic addition to the movie, but the problem is that actual dreams start during REM sleep, and microsleep is simply not long enough for a person to start dreaming
Could you then avoid freddy by sleeping in very short intervals, to avoid REM, but getting in enough sleep to survive?
Yeah but Freddy doesn’t seem to obey regular laws of biology. I mean he was able to attack the kids and Nancy in Dream Warriors despite them all being put on Hypnocyll (I don’t count the Doctor because he didn’t take it since he wasn’t a patient), that drug that was supposed to suppress REM sleep/dreams.

So I've got to be honest here, I think they should have doubled down on the idea that maybe Fred was innocent (it's brought up at 9:43). I think that would have been an interesting twist on the mythos of the franchise while also having this remake carving its own path. Maybe even take it a step further with Fred being _completely_ innocent, with the marks and scratches on the kids being from each other playing too rough but all agreeing to blame it on the friendly gardener, and Freddy is hunting down the kids as revenge on _them_ instead of the original movie being revenge on the parents that killed him, ultimately making the movie a cautionary tale about how lies can have very serious consequences.
I agree.
I like this idea.
that would have been fucking awesome and a nice twist and different
That would have been great! It would have added sooo much depth to the characters, and actually have been kind of interesting to see Freddy go from a friendly (if creepy) man to a monster of nightmares. Such a missed opportunity to tell an interesting story in a "slasher"
But like always fans would’ve complained about how Freddy is supposed to be evil even before his death.
Obviously the og and Robert Englund will always be THE Freddy Krueger, but over the years, I don't think this remake is that bad anymore tbh. Jackie Earl Haley is pretty creepy as the Fredster
I still think the actual movie is pretty bad, but I like Jacky for the most part
I'm hoping he gets a chance to play the character again, in a better movie
I mean, if you have to pass the knife-gloves to someone, he’s not a bad choice.
His Freddy was amazing tbh.
To me Jackie will always be Rorschach
So they assumed Freddy was innocent only to pull the "yes, he was not" there. I would have loved to see a flip on the story, where Freddy was innocent and came back as the Nightmare demon, because of rage and vengeance for his death on false charges.
That would've been quite the worthy revival.
But this is just a meh...

The goal was to make Freddy creepy and dark. Goal achieved. Even if James isn't comfortable with it. After all, discomfort is the goal of intimidation as a whole. So, making a killer as baseless as possible just ensures that you never run out of rabbit hole to delve into.

When you think about it it’s terrifying how no one could survive Freddy in reality as we all have to sleep eventually
not unless someone killed him, there's only one of him, not multiple.

@@edwardbo4666 can't he force you to dream when you fall asleep tho?
Take control. Don't be scared. Fight him till he's tired of trying.
You can stop dreaming with antidepressants apparently idk I heard it on film theory
This one has actually grown on me. A remake is, supposed to be, someone else's reimagining of a classic character. The darker, scarier, more terrifying version of Freddy that we see in this one is actually the one I prefer now. Its how my nightmares are, if theres a killer in them that's making jokes, its deadpan and creepy instead of funny... it just made it more real, and therefore more terrifying, to me on a personal level. Loved your Kill Count as always James. If with darker toned movies you can still make me laugh. Continue being a good person :)
I agree with your saying that a killer making jokes in dreams is terrifying, but I feel that this movie was very bland, it didn’t have the flavor of the OGs in my opinion. I also don’t like how they made him even more of a monster, I wish they made it so Freddy really was innocent and was killing the kids because their parents killed him even though he didn’t do anything. People have different opinions though, hope you are having a nice day.
@@D0CT0RS133P | I feel like the director of this movie wanted to do what Wes originally planned for the Original movie but since people are used to Freddy being a cartoony character that makes jokes, people hated this version of Freddy.
@@subjectdelta4758 Freddy's characterization is not THAT bad in the remake, it's all the characters around him that are utterly lifeless and bland. Rooney Mara's Nancy is not compelling so it's hard to care if her and her friends survive or not. Overall the movie had some decent ideas but it's execution was lacking.
I think this portrayal of Freddy is mostly good, but adding in the pedophile part of his crimes kind of lost some of the fun of his dark humored character for me. The lazy rehashing of iconic lines doesn't help. Still he was hands down the only reason I would rewatch this movie.
"A remake is supposed to be someone else's reimagining of a classic character."
And yet it copies so much of the original but more duller that failed to capture the tone and magic of the original.
Honestly, the idea of Freddie being innocent would have been cool.

Did you guys just completely forget New Nightmare?
No he meant Freddy is a pedo man and he doesn’t like him like this
Freddy's always been a pedo tho, they just never spelled it out like this. The way he behaves and talks (at least in the first few movies) it's pretty obvious.
Josh Smith yeah but they never did it like this
“What game do you want to play?” “Fok you!” “Oooooo sounds fun.”

😭✋🏻
R.I.P.
Honestly this line makes me like this version of Freddy, the fact that he is straight up a fucking monstrous human and it is portrayed and played so well makes me love it
Noooo same tho 🤣🤣
That was really good!
I can think of a few ways that this remake could have been more unique. First off, kill Nancy and make someone else the main lead. It would be a hell of a twist and keep the audience on edge. Second, actually make Freddy innocent of the crimes he was accused of. That would add a more tragic angle to the character and give us something unique. Third, stop relying on jump scares unless you're going to make them actually scary. All that said, I still actually like Jackie Earl Haley as Freddy. He adds a sinister tone to the character that we really hadn't seen since Nightmare 2. Great video as always.
Karrota Kun I agree, except for the second reason. Just throw out the possible innocent man part, he's a Slasher villain, the less human the better.
Karrota Kun I completely agree, especially since Haley seemed to play the role that way
Karrota Kun that’s what I never got. If he was guilty of all the crimes why did he get to resurrect as a killing machine and get revenge ? If he were innocent it would make more sense
George l I honestly think the second reason makes the most sense.
Freddy innocent?! Stupidest idea ever. That would make him just like any other slasher movie villain ever.. Also, he wouldn't have his trademark glove and there wouldn't have been any nursery rhyme about him. Let that sink in
I prefer the narrative that Freddy is innocent, would have been a cool twist that dead freddy is a killer out of vengence.

I had NO idea Mr. Krabs played in this movie lmao
I originally had mixed feelings about this movie. But I've come to really admire Jackie Earle Haley's performance. It genuinely captures the essence of Robert Englund's character, but more serious and uncomfortably dark.
Freddy's actor sounds like he's a badass hunting people.
He sounds like Rorschach
Didn’t Jackie early Haley voice Rorschach?
Gaminglegends 12 he did
Fun fact Robert England really loved him as Rorschach
@@alienspear8706 yeah, he did.
Craziest bit of trivia with this movie. Johnny Depp moved to LA to focus on his music as the lead singer of a band. He fell into acting accidentally because a friend of his asked him to drive him to the Nightmare audition. While Johnny waited for the audition to be over so he could take his friend home, the casting director noticed him, liked his look, and asked him to read. She, I believe it was a she, loved him and cast him in the role and, consequently, his friend was not cast. The friend he drove to the audition was a young Jackie Earle Haley who played Freddie in this remake.
This rumor has been debunked by Jackie Earle Haley himself.
@@JetWindTV Boo! That's depressing. I loved that story.
@@thecornerkid402 Sorry. I googled it because I was curious after reading this.

Maybe bc Freddy is short
I will say the remake definitely succeeded in making Freddy much darker and menacing, minus the throwback quotes and cheap jump scares.

"It didn't become onscreen canon until just now."
Uh, actually, an episode of _Freddy's Nightmares_ entitled "It's My Party and You'll Die if I Want You To" has a character explicitly refer to Freddy as a child molester. And while it isn't precisely the same continuity, it is still Robert Englund's Freddy.
Also in "The Dream Child", one of the articles Alice and Mark are looking through says "Child Molester Freed". The original films were a little more coy about saying it but they didn't deny it either.
When he said that I was like no he was always a Chester!! Lol
That show is so obscure it doesn't count much. And the fact that they tell and don't show? I don't like to describe that as "onscreen canon."

No he wasn't
Other than the bad CGI I actually like the remake, Jackie Earle Hayley was a great replacement as Freddy. Wish we got more films with Jackie.
Craig Norrie
He's no Robert Englund, but I agree.
Agreed. I know some shot for shot scenes were a bit unnecessary but he was great at being a very vicious angry Freddy. I enjoyed this movie quite a bit.
I just loved his claw tick. It was something new and I think it was one of the smaller details that made him appear even more scary. I love Englund, but Jackie gives him a run for his money.
Max the Scarecrow i think what sells it is the anger. Jackie's Freddy is PISSED OFF that he was killed and he does not really play many games. The fact he lures his favorite girl to remember the sick things he did also shows how psychotic this version is
Hot take: this really wasn't bad and when you consider what kinda garbage this franchise has produced it's not bad at all. Middle to top tier.
I’m one of the few who’d agree with you. Freddy’s Dead anyone?
Exactly ma dude
I mean atleast freddys dead included the right house
No. It tries it's hardest not to be part of the franchise and so should be judged accordingly. It's just another crappy Platinum Dunes "lets stand on the shoulders of people who created these characters and pretend we are better then them"
No its the worst of the series easily the reason why is because first off your trying to remake a film thats considered a masterpiece with a bad first time music video director a bad script an a cast that just dosent care so every problem it all ready has feels enhanced even more because your all ready trying to make a film that competes with a masterpiece.Even the lesser sequels to the original had the benefit of being fun because of the performance of Freddy here they want to go darker by focusing on the molestation plot which could have worked but the problem is they also want the audience to laugh along with Freddy by giving him random one liners it dosent mesh with the darker story. By making Freddy more a standard just ordinary child molester he feels like any bland slasher with no personality having Freddy just be a basic molester could have worked if they totally dropped the one liners an went for a real world realistic vibe with actual good actors that could show what it was like to have been molested an how it effected there lives this movie needed to be darker an actually went in depth with the molestation plot it needed to be more dramatic an character focused it could have been a really scary dark deep movie about children who have been molested. Problem is they want to be darker but also want a standard slasher to so they can have sequels the ideas dont mesh or play well if you going to have molestation be the main plot you have to have a truly dark deeper horror film not a basic slasher thats why this film fails an thats why this Freddy dosent work.
Jackie Earl Haley did a decent job portraying a far darker version of Freddy. The whole change in plot wouldn't have been awful if it had turned out he was innocent. Still enjoyed his performance and the way he gave him a very unique tone.
"far darker"
I don't think we saw the same movie.
14:14 I love this Freddy's grimace, as though he's actually mad and killing Nancy's mom out of spite.
I’m not saying New Freddy is better than OG, but I like New Freddy a lot. Still got that dark humor and is menacing

I find Jackie Earle Haley is a great actor. But the writing for this movie really let him down. They should have definitely spoken to Wes Craven.
Wes Craven most likely didn't want this remake to happen at all. Nightmare 7 clearly was his way to say "I created this franchise and I also will end it".
I honestly expected Freddy to say ”Im Batman” when he was killing Chris

Not really. I’m a NoES fan and This movie is at least better than Nightmare 4, 5, and 6 by a mile.
This Freddy is underrated. He did his best to portray Freddy Krueger.
People complain this guy doesn't look like the original Freddy. That's the case with old slasher films - antagonists were supposed to be scary, even at the price of realism. The remake doesn't focus on the character as much as it does on just the story, as if it were a stand-alone movie. Freddy was supposed to look like a burn victim in this one, not a scary old man.

honestly i really love how the horror community agrees that s/a is the component that makes a villain a true monster.
personally, this movie clearly stating what kind of person freddy vindicated my innate discomfort of this character. as someone who went through childhood s/a, freddy always disturbed and scared me. i just knew there was some sexual violence there but i couldn’t articulate it until later when others corroborated that feeling. it was hard to enjoy certain things as a horror fan when so many people praise a villain that you see as a monster based off your real experiences with that kind of monster. it’s eerily reminiscent of my real situation in that my trauma seemed so unclear, and often disregarded, as it was happening but now everyone around me looks back at it and agrees that it was awful. that being said, while this depiction of the character was very well done (i adore the acting, makeup, and costumes for him), it definitely pushes the movie further from horror and more into disturbing territory. this kinda of subject matter needed more telling than showing. i have all sorts of feelings on remakes but that’s for another video. i’m too busy binging all the kill counts to fully articulate those opinions rn
