  • The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant (Mt 18:21-35) offers an important lesson about mercy. In the Lord’s prayer we say “forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.”
Peter asked Jesus how many times we should forgive someone who sins against us. Jesus replied not just seven times but seventy times seven!
Then he told them a parable to help them understand why forgiveness is so important:
The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant Summary
A king called forth all his servants who owed him debts. One servant owed so much that the king ordered him to be sold into slavery along with his wife and all of their possessions.
The servant begged for mercy and the king was moved with compassion. He forgave him.
That servant then went out to his fellow servants who owed him much less money and demanded repayment.
One of the other servants begged for mercy, but the man refused and had this fellow servant thrown into jail.
The lord heard this and was filled with anger that his mercy was not passed on to others. He had the wicked servant sent into prison.
The Meaning of the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant
After telling this parable, Jesus summarized the meaning clearly:
“So my heavenly Father will also do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother or sister from your heart” (Mt 18:35).
Forgiveness is never easy. We could truly be hurt by another person’s sins.
The Lord’s mercy, however, is freeing. When we recognize how great a debt that Jesus Christ paid for us, it puts all the spiritual and emotional debts against us in perspective.
As the Lord was merciful with us, so too should we be merciful with others.
Think about all the pain that you hold on to by not forgiving someone. They often can’t pay you back. They won’t make up for it.
Forgive them anyway and free them so that you too may feel free.
Otherwise, you will feel as though you are in a prison of anger and resentment.
