  • In Matthew 18 Jesus speaks of an unmerciful servant who was forgiven a great debt by his Lord. Yet, when the servant had to forgive a fellow servant a much smaller debt, the servant did not extend mercy.
Discover some of the nuances in this amazing parable of mercy and the unmerciful servant with Dr. Brant Pitre.

Wow!!! Even if we forgive over and over again, it can never be or equal to God's forgiveness of our sins. Thanks Dr Pitre for this enlightening piece. God bless you.

what's important to note is that both servants apologised to their master and recognised that they had done some wrong and had to do something to make things right again by their master. The mercy comes when the one who is offended against has the apology recognising a wrong was done and also a promise that the offender wants to do something to make amends to right the wrong - they are asking for mercy not to be punished but to be allowed the chance to make good the error. That is very different from people who expect mercy but have no recognition of their wrong doing, deny they did wrong and just want to pretend the relationship is fine without any wrong ever having been done!

This parable of the unforgiving/unmerciful servant is a metaphor for the rite/sacrament of confession/penance.
In the parable we notice that both, the master and the servant, knew about the debts that had been amassed by the latter. The servant admitted - confessed - to his master the amount of money owed by him was the correct one; and, he asked for forgiveness. The servant knew the extent of his debt. In the face of such a huge debt, the master pardoned - absolved - the servant from his debt.
Where did the servant go wrong in the end? The servant was at a loss for any purpose of amendment once he was absolved. He defiled the clean slate that his master had handed him out. That was his undoing.
Just as the master pardoned the debts of his servant, God, Our Lord, absolves us from our debts - He forgives us our sins - during the sacrament of confession. God knows we have sinned. We know, and we admit (confess) that we have sinned. We beg for forgiveness. With the absolution, God gives us a clean slate to start over. It is our duty to commit ourselves to amend our wrong ways once we are absolved/pardoned after confession. We have to make sure we keep our slate as clean - or our cleanest possible - as God gave it to us. This is the purpose of amendment. Without this conscious awareness of our own that we should keep and follow God's way - without straying from His path - we will keep on defiling that clean slate over and over. We will keep on amassing more debt (sins).
Have you wondered how many times did the master forgive his servant in the past, in order for the latter to amass such an enormous debt? Maybe seventy times seven - or close to it.
In the same way: How many times has God forgiven us in the past, for us to amass the load of sins we confess as ours during the sacrament of penance? Infinite. He gives us a clean slate every single time we show a contrite and repented heart to him.
And: Notice that the unforgiving servant was unable to pardon his own servant for a smaller amount of money than the one the former himself owed to his master. This comes to show that the amount of forgiveness that is requested from us to bestow upon our neighbors is a speck - if at all - compared to God's immense/infinite forgiveness, bestowed upon us.
    Another Divine parable from Jesus.
Thank you, Dr. Pitre, for your excellent presentations, and for allowing yours truly to post this comment.

Of course on a different level we are both the servants and it is an inner struggle. The parable explaining how we interact with our neighbor. Which means familial relationship, a kenship. Some one in your social sphere not a person who lives next to you.

I seen the parable a little different. I seen it as us who can't forgive our own sins so we plea with God to forgive us as this is a debt we are unable to pay since we can't forgive our own sins. The Bible says a new Testament stars with the death of a testator. For a testament is in force after men are dead, since it has no power at all while the testator lives. Therefore not even the first covenant was dedicated without blood. So God shows us that sins are forgiven by the Blood of Jesus. Then after Christ shed his blood he became the testator and the new Testament begin. Since we can't forgive sins Jesus owes us a death sentence as it is promised that death is the wages of sin. We earned a honest day of death. For the wages of Sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life. Gods gives us a redeemer for the guilty to be redeemed or pardoned from our death sentence, his name is Jesus Christ. Once Jesus has forgotten you you are indeed free. For if the Son shall sat you free, you shall be free indeed. I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. 35 And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. 36 Therefore if the Son sets you free, you shall be free indeed. John chapter 8.
If Jesus has forgiven you of a debt you cannot repay you are free however to use that freedom and summon someone who owes you very little of a debt that he can repay you do not forgive him and you punish him for a debt he could repay he just needed more time. This is a wicked wicked person. Jesus uses this parable to show us not only of forgiving others but WHY? When 2 people are forgiven by the King whoever is the most forgiven will love you more. Who ever debt is bigger will love you more be you forgave a debt he couldn't repay so Jesus calls us to forgive debts our debtors can repay. Jesus forgives us for debts we couldn't pay which is Sin, we can't forgive our own sins and when we don't forgive we are forgiving payable debts.

@PC Grova ... it is difficult to tell from this parable whether the servant is condemned to everlasting punishment or not. The ending says the servant will be put into jail "until all the debt is repaid". As others have said, this is not eternally thrown out. So is there an elememt of purification/purgatory in this ending?
That is the beauty/limitation of parables ... they are imprecise, convey a general meaning but can relate to many of us in many situations!

    • @pcgrova7198
      @pcgrova7198 3 года назад

@@pboyle3723 Thanks for your input. For me, any limitation is not on the part of the parable but with our understanding. Hence the need to always read all views before forming (with prayer) the most likely, most truthful interpretation. For me the critical bit as Dr Pitre explains, was how Christ chose to characterise the amount of debt; it was not just a high number but it was unpayable - ever. The bottom line is that if you don't establish a forgiving heart by the end of your life ... its goodnight nurse!!

Beginning with one Atom split in two as technology speeds up travel so do the pains of labor. The kingdoms rise, and the kingdoms fall. Just as important as the word is the silence in between. Every child makes mistakes, and from my perspective Lucifer is a grown man who keeps arguing with a Mother thinking he has me deceived. I would forgive him in a heartbeat if he would let me, but he would rather hoard all the wealth, and dictate over my authority. When he dishonors me he dishonors my law, and suffering as a beat slave he punishes himself when he chooses not to listen. I am not a cold stone idol representing brutality, and if my intentions were to inflict punishment I wouldn't bother establishing my law at all. That would defeat my whole purpose. My intentions are to ensure my loved ones are happy and I refuse to be grateful for a life if it requires my child to suffer and die. I had no idea I was watching my own delivery until the red Sea parted and my face emerged from a bush on fire. Jonah of Ark ring a bell

But if we have to forgive so many times, that means the sinner or the debtor was not sincere on his sin or debt...I mean when we confess our sins we must be sincere and repentant that we should not be repeating the same sin or sins. Many of us repeat our sins indeed, thus we ask for forgiveness again, and again, and again. I guess that's the point in as far as applying it to our lives. Thanks.

You’re forgiven or you’re condemned. Which are you? We do not continue to sin after being forgiven as if trying to negate the cost Jesus paid. Jesus forgave many their sins and if you know Jesus, He has forgiven you your many sins.
    Romans 10:9
    John 3:16
Your sins blotted out or you can hang onto your sins and be blotted out erased from the book of life.
