    Thank you for covering this case! Loretta had turned her life around and it's so sad that it was all taken from her by two very selfish individuals. Her sister Diem actually passed away shortly after Loretta's death, which is another sad turn to this story.
    Blake and Victoria are vile people. The worst part is that Victoria was recently granted escorted visits into the community! What a disgrace and slap in the face to Loretta's memory. As a Canadian, our justice system needs a lot of work.

      They had been planning this for a while. They were going to blindside her and suffocate her so as not to leave evidence. They had bought a couple of hockey bags. They would steal her credit cards, purse/cash, phone, car. The killers knew her family was a long distance away. Her boyfriend seemed weird, he probably rarely came to her place. Who knows, they may have asked Loretta to stop by that day. It was 4 days before a missing person's report was filed, boyfriend never went to girlfriend's apartment to check on her. The killers took advantage of Loretta's personality and circumstances. Psychopaths are often masterminds at planning out malicious acts. They figured they would have time to travel 2,000 miles before cops figured things out.

      Hey, do you mind if I ask you a question then? Adrian mentioned at the end that the police investigation "faltered" after they learned that Loretta was of Inuit descent, but he didn't really give any details about how that was the case. Could you shed any light on this, specifically any examples of how the investigation might have been mishandled after that point, like for example oversights or even sheer laziness that ended up delaying the eventual arrests or prosecution? I'm extremely interested in the topic of systemic failures of the police in cases of missing indigenous women, so when Adrian mentioned that point it got me asking questions... Thanks in advance!

    • @briannacm8741
      @briannacm8741 Год назад +7

      @@pizzlerot2730 The only info I've heard or could find was that Loretta's parents felt a shift after her it was brought up that she was in fact, Inuk.
      Exert I found:
      "When they said she was a white woman, I would call to the investigators and they would answer to me and I would talk personally to the investigators and after, when they started calling her Inuk, I had to start swearing and everything to get answers," said Miriam Saunders. "After that, I started talking to this go-between."
      Halifax Regional Police issued a statement saying that, as part of a set process, a family liaison officer is always assigned to cases involving homicides and missing persons who "is responsible for ensuring effective communication with the family, to the extent possible without jeopardizing the investigation."
      In my opinion, there is alot more perceived racism today, then actual racism.

    • @pizzlerot2730
      @pizzlerot2730 Год назад +10

      @@briannacm8741 interesting, thanks for that information. And regarding racism, there's definitely a lot of both, with different amounts of each in different geographical and societal areas. Where it gets tricky is trying to root out true systemic racism, because it's very difficult to prove and is often passed off as perceived racism. Very rarely can we point a finger at an obvious bad apple in the system; the vast majority of it is actually a manifestation of the subconscious biases of many people, so by definition we tend to not be aware of it until after the fact (if ever). It's a tough nut to crack, but that's why it's important to keep asking questions, and also to pay attention to the statistics since that's the best way to discover biases in data.

As I stated in a comment above, I looked into it and discovered misinformation and assumptions. Just to sum it up, her body was found within 9 days and both defendants were sentenced to life. That shows how well the investigation was done.

      @@VioletJoy While it's true that we are all human, there is no default Culture or 'race'. Being indigenous is a huge part of cultural identity and there's no such thing as a person without a culture. I shouldn't have to pretend Im *not* indigenous for other people to see me as human first. Only people who see themselves as "Default" and "best" don't identify the nuances of that. Its ethnocentric and short sighted. So no. The mistreatment of Indigenous women will ALWAYS be a problem until it doesn't happen anymore. Because the alternative is erasure and ignorance to the pain of, go figure, other humans.

    I’ve seen this case before on a television show called “Murder On CCTV” on The Crime & Investigation Network. I still watched every minute of this video though Adrian, you are a great story teller and you included details that even the television show didn’t.
    Thank you for all the time and effort you put in to making these videos for us all to watch.
    I have mentioned this before but could you please do some research into the murder spree of Maksim Gelman. I’d love to hear you tell that story. Thanks again,

      Say this first:
      "More than one-third (38%) of persons accused of homicide in 2017 were identified by police as Indigenous. This proportion has been increasing since 2014 when 31% of persons accused of homicide were Indigenous. The rate of Indigenous people accused of homicide in 2017 was 12 times higher than the rate of non-Indigenous accused (11.12 vs. 0.93 per 100,000 population)."

    That's what really got to me about the Gabby Petito case. All media scrambled and kept on about how she was a RUclipsr. She may have wanted to be one but had literally only uploaded 1 video. Meanwhile in the same state of Wyoming over 700 Native women have gone missing in JUST Wyoming from 2011 to 2020. That's on average a little over 6.5 women A MONTH. No national news about that. That's over 1 disappearance every week. But you get a pretty blonde haired woman missing and they brought out EVERYONE. All law enforcement, 10s of thousands of searchers. I'm sorry Gabby disappeared but it is a stark contrast in "who" is important in the news. 710 women in just 9 years. And that's just for Wyoming. This is a crazy epidemic happening in the Midwest and Canada with Native Women. There's either a bunch of serial killers freely hunting or its being done by a large agency. For why? I have no clue. But the stats speak for themselves. Gabby was on every news outlet everywhere every hour for weeks. And we still haven't heard the name of 1 Native woman. It's scary to think that there is some sort of organized hunting of humans going on as we speak.

    I love how you start by giving an in-depth, genuine, honest insight into who the person was before they became a victim to crime, presenting them as a complex human with hopes and dreams rather than relying on the usual cliches. It definitely helps you appreciate what a loss to the world their untimely, senseless death created.

    I hadn't heard of this case before, despite being Canadian. I remember studying the Highway of Tears and how the systemic issues with crimes against indigenous peoples is so prevalent, when I was in university. Which is probably why I hadn't heard of it because of how indigenous issues are so often smothered in the news. It's so bad that I grew up seeing it all the time and everywhere I travelled in Canada. There are so many people here who believe it is an issue of the past. (Peers of mine went to an exhibition by Kent Monkman, and so many people were saying things like "I'm glad this kind of racism doesn't exist anymore.)
    It's so heartbreaking that she was victimized by her tennants and the legal system, with her dedication to indigenous issues.
    I still see it so often not just in public but even within family. With how my MIL talks about how her own mother had dated indigenous men and some hints of underlying disdain (that she may be the product of such a relationship). Also how the stigma and prejudice not only stems from traditions of WASP people, but extends to new immgrants by making it somehow acceptable for new citizens to involve themselves in the prejudices against indigenous people. (My brother and I had pretty racist immigrant parents, and it often was exhausting for us (my grandparents, my younger brother, and myself to try to correct their prejudices.)
    Cases like this always make me nauseous...
    Also the way the murderer held that hockey bag in the apartment lobby footage was sus... who the heck carries a hockey bag like that? You shoulder it and go. That part literally had me screaming at the screen.

      Just to note, police did absolutely nothing wrong in this case. Loretta's mother's claims were false. I looked into it and the investigation was very thorough and swift. It seems very likely that her mother was looking for problems that weren't there.
      Many people, no matter their race, are discriminated or mistreated for one reason or another. The idea of chronic indigenous mistreatment by police is simply false. If you look at the data, it's very clear. Actually, if you speak to police officers, you'll see that it's not accurate. While there are always racist people in every walk of life, ironically, white people are generally the least racist. It is really frowned upon by many cultures to date, marry, it even have friends outside their race. But it's very popular to point toward one group and make them the bad guy. I grieve for humanity.

      You are entitled to your opinion. My personal experiences have observed otherwise.
      I am married to a retired officer, I have relatives who work within the criminal justice system, and unfortunately that really isn't the case. My experience tells me otherwise as well as schollarly data I studied in the Social Justice classes I had in university. Whether the claims from the mother herself are false or not, Indigenous issues with racism are a very real thing as well as the racism that impacts them from places of authority. There is much investigation of policing in Canada in various areas that are being investigated internally by SIU regularly which is often on various websites for Canadian social issues, invluding that of various police services' websites, government websites, Human Rights Comission of Canada. If you access JSTOR, which is often used as academic/peer-reviewed documents there are many articles that cite certain dates and evidence which potentially suggests that there is still racism within systems of authority in Canada.
      Most officers arent racist, but some do slip through the cracks and some areas it is common place to make remarks or have actions based on their personal prejudices.
