These Stefano Bemer shoes were incredible to work on. It was a long process to try to bring them back to life. These are contest shoes and i just got word from the judges in the Netherlands that its ok to share because the judging is over. Not sure how I did in the contest but doesn't matter, i enjoyed every minute

Tell your wife that your commentaries are well received. After a day of listening to what is happening in Washington it’s nice to hear from someone who knows what he is talking about. Keep up the great work.
One of the things I like best about your videos is how you go about making decisions. You never know what you'll come across inside the shoes, and it's interesting to see how you keep the big picture in mind as you choose your plan of attack.

This video was impressive! Enjoyed learning about the anatomy of what makes quality shoes. This shoe is built like a tank the amount of elaborate sewing went into it. Your shop reminds me of my neighbor shoe repair when I was a child growing up in the 60's in South America. Those days our parents took the shoes to be repaired as many times as these needed. No new shoes until the old ones were really old. I use to see the master to work and I even remember the names of the tools he used. Your job is amazing, thanks for the wonderful video.

I wonder how a girl can be 28 years old. That sounds like a grown woman to me.
@@Collateralcoffee give her a break, it's likely a translation difference. I'm not familiar with Dutch or French but Italian uses "girl" for any female from puberty to well into their 30s and often beyond as long as you don't seem "old". "Woman" is very distant and something you use if you are strangers, being formal, or they seem a bit tired out or elderly.
I am a girl at 56, always a girl. Woman is my mom. LOL
@@Collateralcoffee I only use woman if they're clearly elderly. Colloquially in the US, girl is often used until they are married. Anyway, good luck to Ashtraygal on her journey in a trade that needs more talented people.

This is the most amazing shoe I have ever seen! The detail on the bottom is amazing. Those “v cleats” (I think that’s what you called them) are stellar in the shoe. I also loved how you did the one red, and the other pair were blue. It all screams, “style!” I know next to nothing about shoes, but I think I know excellent craftsmanship. You have it in spades, sir.
Sometimes I don’t know if he talking to us or to himself! He’s enjoyable.
From a guy who works by himself a lot, I'm not sure I know many that don't talk to themselves a lot. You become your own best company.

The commentary/explanations are a big part of the video. Helps me understand what is being done and why.
It takes skill to keep up a running commentary with no one else there to help keep the flow going.
I for one am glad you do talk to the viewers. It let's us know about the process of repairing a shoe or handbag. It should make us appreciate the apparel more.

Wow.....and I mean WOW. Love the coloring and care to have the uppers bounce back. The soles of the sole, just, I mean.......WOW, no words to describe that. If I had a pair of those shoes....excuse me....works of art. They's be in a glass case. Simply wonderful to watch you work.

Hi Steve, I love the style of shoe you chose for the contest, the intricate stitching along with the inserts used to contour the instep as well as the stair stepped effect to the sole make this an excellent choice to demonstrate your wonderful re crafting talents ! Add in the beautiful sole designs...you're #1 IN OUR BOOK ! On a side note I can't stop humming the theme song from Star Wars when you do the slow motion of the soles ! Lol GOOD LUCK MAN !👌👍❤

Tell your wife we listen to you and are interested because your audience is also a little unsure of them selves and love to hear a master at work, who sometimes isn’t perfect. It lets us know it’s okay to make mistakes, and that even at a master level (as you clearly are) sometimes we have doubts. Life is trial and error. You are human and that’s what’s so endearing about you and your channel. I learn so much, not just about the craft, but about the mind set. Thank you!

I've never considered having a half sole fitted to a worn out sole, it always feels like a cheap cut and shut job but you could do mine any time if it's like the one you showed here. Great job!

Unreal! Basically a pair of ruined shoes, lovingly dismantled, cleaned, dyed, nourished and rebuilt! Every step was an education and very enjoyable to watch. Class!

That Hammer Time at 33:10 was pretty cool! The damping of the material on the bench gave it a nice, muted quality. Would be fun to use that as a drum sound.

Red, white, and blue are also the colors of the Dutch flag, so the judges might have thought you were kissing up.

Steve this is beyond impressive, only the best shoe makers in the world use a seamless wholecut liner in their shoes and you replicated it with ease, hats of to you.
Just loving those blue shoes, they appeared out of the blue. Both shoes though are a masterpiece of workmanship. No half hearted repairs here, award winning if I were the judge.

If you're gonna do a trip to Europe, go to Northampton in England where so many of the famous shoes are made. Be really interesting to see you do a video where you visit one of the famous shoe factories. As this shoe restoration for the competition is a Norwegian welt, it would be interesting to see if you can visit the Cheaney factory, they make a shoe with Veldtschoen construction, very similar to Norwegian. I have a pair made this way, they are built like a tank.
Always visit the Cheaney factory shop when I’m there. The shoes are simply great. I’m seeing here in these videos real skill and attention to detail it’s amazing.
When I was a teenager, I worked for Malanga Bros. Shoe Repair. It was a sweet little company where the craft was being taught and the shops were being passed down from generation to generation. Sadly, I think all the shops closed with the openings of Payless shoe stores on every corner, and I'm pretty sure that these artists all ended up working for Walmart. But, watching your video brought me back to a time in which quality outweighed quantity. Just for a moment I could smell the shoe repair shop. The leather, the rubber, the glues.... Ahhh, Thanks for the memories.

Bedo just hopped up in my choices to watch, so I did, a few months ago, and I am now watching reruns. I love his channel!! What makes this so weird is that I am a 69 year old woman. So why am I watching shoe repairs? Because they're fascinating--especially when Steve does them!!! He also got me watching shoe polishing. It's a whole other world out there that I knew nothing about--and now I have my 72 year old sister watching, too!! Yay Steve! You're definitely our favorite in this genre.

I watch a lot of your videos. I consider myself as a craftsman, but I aspire to be a craftsman at your level in my trade. Thanks for explaining the tools in some of your videos. I inherited a wood box of tools from Italy but had no idea what the old tools were for. Now I know that they are old and very well used cobbler's tools. Thank you for doing all of these videos. Inspiring and educational.

According to a post by Steve on FB, he placed Silver in the competition. Still curious as the actual name of the comp, curious to see the Gold if Shoe God Steve placed Silver!
@@Faustvonholle Thank you for the answer. I agree, if Steve's reconditioning job got silver, the gold winner must have been utterly amazing.
The contest is the annual European Shoemaker Contest organised by the Dutch Shoemakers Organisation with the Dutch Shoe Academy. Steve got the third best score, at the very edge between the silver and gold... so close!! The winner for that category is a 33yo Dutch gentleman who scored 197 / 200, apparently the highest score ever given in the competition.
I am not going to say his name or link to articles. I must say however that his starting point was a pair of high-end Santoni shoes that he himself wore for a year and then repaired.
There are no pictures or videos of the whole shoe that I can find, only of the soles.
I know nothing and watch Steve's videos only for entertainment, it is a fact that this young Dutch is a master of his craft, but in all honesty I find it hard to believe that the starting condition of his shoes was as bad as Steves'.
Speaking expertly only from behind my keyboard and knowing nothing about shoe repair... Steve is the one who won.
Hi Steve, I was watching this amazing restoration and I saw all the troubles you had using an awl to make the holes for the second row of stitches and I was thinking that maybe in the future you can try using a dremel tool with a very small bit to make the holes 😊
