J.R. was right about Gary, he was weak. Instead of taking Val with him, he left her there to fend for herself. He never tried to be a man, husband or father, until he was well into his 30s. And then we had to watch him make mistake after mistake on Knots for over half of the series. I know Val loved him, but she deserved better. So did Lucy.

Great scene - one of my favorite of the series. Hagman and Van Ark were marvelous here.

J.R. took lucy in the dead of night & brought lucy home to sooth fork.
It was always funny to me how the rest of em are saying Gary's the drunk when the rest of them are gulping down bourbon at 7am....
JR's the mean drunk and Bobby's the holier-than-thou lecture'er drunk. Jock always came off drunk. The only difference I see is that Gary was the one who finally took some introspection and noticed, "Hey, this doesn't seem like what one should be doing.... Perhaps I should go get some help with this."
Don't get me wrong, there are many other ways the other Ewing boys take-the-pony like success, business-sense, parenthood and testicular fortitude, but when it comes to alcohol-management and living in California, Gary's the one to turn to outta that bunch.
