From Reddit: The guy Fallon is playing is Lt. George C. Rice. An honest to god war hero. Rice knew that the 101st was going to be short on supplies and would likely end up surrounded, so he made eight supply runs to bring them ammunition, food, blankets, anything that could be useful, all while the Germans were closing in. His eighth and last run was actually made after the Germans had encircled the 101st, meaning he could have bee captured at any time. He only stopped because his own commanding officer ordered him to do so. He was nominated for the Medal of Honor for this.
17:20. "You are officers, you are grownups, YOU OUGHTA KNOW!" It really hits hard when Eugene Roe, easily one of the most soft-spoken characters in Easy Company, loses his shit on Winters/Nixon/Welsh. It really makes you realize just how young these guys actually were.
Especially because by now we have such a high opinion of them. There were a lot of personality conflicts that aren't even covered in the show. It's not a spoiler to say that Buck thought Nix was a dick. There's a clip from an interview where he says so. lol
Remember they said Lt. Colonel Strayer had gone to a wedding back in England. He got back just in time, that's why he was dressed up in his nice uniform.
When I hear folks in the US (from the UK personally) complaining about modern issues between genders and all the rest, I often think of this show and the real men that fought and died in horrendous conditions and think... listen to yourselves. People have faced these kinds of things face to face and they deserve enormous amounts of respect. Modern society has no idea. Love your reactions guys, looking forward to the next two episodes with you 👍
21:55. They'll explain soon about Buck's sudden change of demeanour after getting wounded in Holland, but yeah, it was an incredibly sobering experience for him.
At the end when Easy Company went into the woods around Bastogne, they did not know it at the time, they were about to be part of the "Battle of the Bulge", the largest land battle in US Army history, over 600,000 US Soldiers took part, combined with other allied forces, over 1,000,000 allied soldiers fought the German offensive thru the Ardennes Forest.
Solidly 1/10th of ALL the US casualties in the War were from the Battle of The Bulge--that's all services, all over the world. Yes, it was the greatest battle.
Make no mistake. CPT Winters is in charge no matter what position he is in. BTW that kid he shot was a scout that's why he was alone. The real winters mentions it in a documentary.
Chamber or piss pots were pretty common in Europe as many places old buildings did not have indoor plumbing. Even today, while not as common, you will find chamber pots at places with limited access to facilities.
The Kid Winters killed first was actually an SS Waaffentrooper who was supposed to be on lookout ,but was caught spacing out ,as were the rest of that division. So that was a key victory over some of the most elite German soldiers .
@@johannesvalterdivizzini1523 That kid did look young enough to be in Hitler Youth . I thought they just propped up Berlin at the very end ,& I'm talking like 12 year olds . This is the beginning ofwhat history called THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE. The germans caught the allies off guard. Instead of retreating, they attacked through the Ardine forrest. Until this happened, nobody thought a army could launch an attack through it. 1st time for everything. Next episodes are gonna be insane x5. Get ready guys.
This is a great episode because it shows what you have to give up in this situation. Winters knows that the German he killed was just a kid, but he had to do it. But the kid's face haunts him, and he'll probably never forget it.
In an interview, Winters has stated that he never felt bad about shooting that sentry. He understood including PTSD in the series but he didn’t suffer from it over that event.
@@chrisbolliger5717 I didn't know that, but I wonder. Can you really look a kid like that in the eye and kill him, and never think of it again? I'm sure he put it out of his mind, but that is not the same as forgetting it.
I don't think he ever forgot that kids face. His book says he remembered it. Did he feel guilty about it? I doubt it. He had a job to do, and he did it.
@@williamkerner3758 I will paraphrase but in the interview he said "he smiled at me and as he smiled, I shot him." He never forgot it but he also accepted it as something that had to be done.
Great reaction, guys. Your understanding of the military is very helpful. Buckle up and hold on for the upcoming episodes. It's going to be a hell of a ride! CURRAHEE !!
This next episode is leading into the infamous Battle of the Bulge, the Germans' last gasp effort to win the war. I guarantee you want to look up the history of the bulge, either in books or utube videos. You guys know most of the characters and will feel everything they're going through now. Episodes 6-10 just amp up everything you've seen up to this point. Enjoy the journey, fellas.
if you guys are having fun watching band of brothers i would have to recommend Hbo's The Pacific less popular than bob but still same quality in my opinion
Of all the facts about this series the one that always sticks out to me was that the only criticism any of the easy company men ever had of the series was that the depiction of Bastogne did not capture how truly awful it was. I wish everyone to think of that when watching these next two chapters. This series went to great pain and exertion to honor the men and to tell their story as accurately and faithfully as possible, yet all of the men agreed that Bastogne was far worse than depicted. I always remember that, however awful the show depicts it, and it does look awful, that it was even worse, and it humbles my soul.
This is the episode when Tom Hanks literally takes the reigns in the series...becoming more introspective with Winters. Long before PTSD was even taken seriously. General Patton famously addressed it with the back of his hand on a soldiers face. Oh and if any of you come across any bacon sandwiches, let me know. Currahee ♠
You can March em if a cliff, you can push em off a plane, you can send them off to die in some Godforsaken swamp. But for some reason you can’t slap them.
Sometimes it's a little odd what the show runners choose to show us. For instance, from what we get to see of Winters trip to Paris, you could come away thinking he didn't have a good time there, when in fact, he did. In letters to his pen-pal, DeEtta Almon, he told her he had a good time and did a lot of the typical tourist stuff you would imagine most people doing. But we don't see any of that.
I thought one of the shots of the full episode, it shows him walking down the street with Notre Dame in the background. (But I believe it was edited out for this reaction). That's as touristy as the Eiffel tower back then..
You guys need to watch Generation Kill also (plus the pacific, probably the pacific first). Very few people react to Generation Kill and its such a great miniseries.
The episodes just continue to climb the mountain of tension and their exploits from here. Of course that's not discounting what they've done up to now. They were seriously bad to the bone. And you're bailing it. They were all men...but Winter's...was the Man even though there are others you will see.
They have been pulling punches. Once you watch the Pacific you see just how many punches they pulled. And even that series was pulling punches compared to the real thing. So that's just how fucked up the Pacific war was.

Boy! We are all trying SO hard to help these guys catch the nuances of this series without dropping spoilers and ruining it. Hehe.

The Niland Brothers were from Tonowanda.. Their story was the basis for the Hanks/Spielberg story told right before BoB.
