    Speedmaster 25th Anniversary was my first real entry into luxury watches. It was a wedding gift from my wife and I will keep it as long as I live. It looks great to this day for an almost 30 year old watch. Wife and I have have been together for almost 23 years. :)

    The price point of the definition of “luxury” continues to climb apparently. When did an Omega Seamaster or Speedy become an “entry level” piece? I’m sorry but very few people in the world are buying brands like AP, Vacheron, or Patek.

    • @3chel0n13
      @3chel0n13 3 года назад +136

      Once upon a time, Hamilton was entry level, Omega and Rolex were the goal, Patek was end-game. I don't know what happened either.

      Yeah, those are super luxury. Esp considering even if you created the next big Tech company and became a billionaire, unless you wanted to buy a bunch of watches you didn’t want, you still might get waitlisted.

      True, this definition applies only for people who can spend 50k on a watch. If i spend 5k on a watch, im sure as hell not going to buy another for the rest of my life.

    • @danielthompson2561
      @danielthompson2561 Год назад +65

      Bought a Hamilton for £500 - bloody brilliant, absolutely stunning, highly recommend. 3.5k is a dumb Goldilocks zone. £100 entry, £300 for a decent watch, £500-£1k absolute tops for entry luxury. Everything else is true luxury, or imo, flagrant luxury. No watch is worth £100k… it’s a fucking watch, not a house…

    Any luxury watch should be something you personally love and want and will wear. Not what other people want, love, and would wear. Biggest mistake I and many other watch lovers make or have made.

    • @EliDeuce
      @EliDeuce 2 года назад +5

      So true! In terms of wrist time, my top 3 watches are a sapphire sandwich Speedmaster, a Seiko Manta Ray King Turtle (JDM), and a Seiko Titanium MarineMaster 600 Spring Dive GMT. On the very rare occasion I have to wear a suit, I typically pair it with a Tag-Heuer Carrera Twin-Time on a leather strap. I suspect very few people have that combination of watches in their regular rotation. And I am good with that!

      100% that money could be better used on paying down debt, investing it, or other similar avenues. But with that said you only live once. If you get a “luxury” watch at a decent price it should retain a fair amount of value. It’s essentially like leading it. Kinda have to break through a certain price point until it will begin to retain any value

    I own a couple of these and I will say this. To any new watch collector looking to make their first luxury purchase. There is no better experience than buying the Seamaster.
    From the ornate wooden box, to the shine and glimmer from the ceramic bezel and dial, and the polish of the twisted lugs, the case, the crown guards and the bracelet. You feel the weight. You see and feel where you spent your money. There are many other great watches but let the Seamaster be your first. It blew me away.

    I'm glad you included a Grand Seiko. My first luxury watch is an SBGA413. It's surprisingly robust, and makes for a great daily wearer.Grand Seiko has lots of great entry level models. Teddy, I think you missed two important brands and watches that fit this category; the JLC Reverso and the Cartier Tank. These are two major time piece series that offer great first luxury options. They carry enormous historical chops, brand credentials, and can be had for less than $7k. Luxury watches don't just equate to divers.

    • @Joe-nh8eq
      @Joe-nh8eq Год назад +5

      The tank was my first luxury watch (and only one yet). I think there’s an interesting debate to be had though:
      Should your first luxury watch be something for special occasions? It’s very expensive, and you may not to want to wear it everywhere as it’s your first luxury watch. In that case the Tank and reverso are perfect.
      Or since you’re spending a lot of money on it, should your first luxury watch be something you wear all the time. A “beater” so to speak. In which case a dive watch is clearly your best pick.
      Love my tank but not going to wear it to work. Though it really is a tank. That thing is freaking durable (from what I understand).
      But my next luxury watch purchase is definitely going to be a dive or some sort of sport. Seamaster dive, aqua terra, oyster, explorer, sub etc.

    I could sell all my watches and be able to get a nice Seiko Springdrive, or Omega Seamaster, or sell about 8 to 10 of them and get a Tudor Black Bay but, I enjoy the 15 watches I now own so much I would be bored with just one watch, or even a couple of watches. When I disregard the brand names, I don't see the value in high priced watches. Great video and I'm sure many people will prefer to have that one expensive brand.

    • @brianmsahin
      @brianmsahin 3 года назад

      @Sixgunner dot org Of course, as I said everyone will be different, but a lot of this feeling of them being something special is psychological to a large extent, this effect is caused by the type of marketing used and human nature, one wants to feel that the watch they spent $5,000, $10,000 or whatever is better so it's easy to convince oneself. I was in the marketing business myself for high priced goods. There's equally good quality out there, but the perception adds up to a higher price that people are willing to pay. I read one watchmaker who said, the Rolex datejust is $2,000 watch with a $4,500 AD and marketing bill on top. Rolex mass produces more than a million watches a year and manages to convince people that, they're exclusive. I do admire the brilliant marketing and market manipulation to give the idea that a Rolex watch is a scarce commodity and difficult to get. The stuff we made was mass produced in Bangladesh and Vietnam, but we could sell them as exclusive products, even though the truth was different. Being in the game, I don't fall for it with anything I buy. I forget the brand, don't get blinded by the shiny marketing and look at the product itself. Whenever one really looks at a watch, or any other product and frees oneself from the perceptions produced by brilliant marketing, the shine can rub off to some extent. The watches you have are indeed excellent, a Breitling would definitely something I could love, in fact I'm looking at a couple now. Breitling pieces are available at very reasonable prices in the aftermarket. So I consider them a bargain if not paying retail. The Tag Heuer is also very reasonably priced in the aftermarket but it's not really my style.

    Omega is the stand out for me. I’m saving for a Planet Ocean. Not sure if it will be the 39mm or the 43.5 size but I prefer the styling and bracelet over the Seamaster 300. Other watches I like are Glashutte Original’s Sea Q panorama date and Omega’s Speedmaster Racing. I’m really only wanting one stand out watch. The Planet Ocean is my first choice but if the right price could be had on the more expensive Glasshutte Original it might end up being the one. Everything about it says quality to me.

    Great video Teddy! The problem with watches is that 95% of the public is only aware of one luxury watch which is a Rolex. As a businessman over the age of 50, who does care about the impression I make, I can only where a Rolex in business and party setting. This is disappointing because many other watches, whether expensive elegant watches or cheap designer watches, look even better than a Rolex. The problem with having too many watches is that you don't wear them and the battery dies or some how they disappear. My 5 watch rotation is
    1. Rolex Daytona (white)- for everyday business or family gatherings
    2. Rolex Sky Dweller (black)- very special occasions
    3. Apple Watch Ultra- working out and everyday watch
    4. Citizen Promaster Air Skyhawk (black)- every day watch
    5. Citizen Promaster Acqualand- 50mm - For fun.
    BONUS- Tissot PRS 516 (white)- Everyday watch.
    These are 5 to 6 watches that I would wear each several times a year. Although I love watches, the others I will most likely never wear and once again they will seem to disappear. The two Rolex's will cost about $40K while the other 4 will cost about $2,500.

I originally planned to buy another more renowned luxury watch later, but 14 years later, I still can’t find a reason replace/upgrade this watch. Because that is the same as a second hand car, or rent for several months and living, but isnt an almost unrealistically high limit for most people. That is what entry level means. £7000 will never be entry level, doesnt matter that some go for tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands because for some, 7000 will be as impossible to commit to as 100,000.

    A used Speedmaster 30th anniversary was my first luxury watch. I will never sell it and my son will inherit it. I bought it for the several reasons:
    1) I wanted a Speedmaster because of the connection to the moon. I was born on 21st July 1969 while the crew of Apollo 11 were walking on the moon. My parents were probably some of the few people in the western world to not see that event because they were otherwise busy.
    2) The 30th anniversary commemorated the first moon walk with the date of 21st July factory engraved on the back, rather than the first moon landing of all other Speedmasters (20th July).
    3) The factory engraving on the back, unlike other Speedmasters, includes the words "The Eagle Has Landed" which are the words I texted my family and friends when my two children were born.
    4) I originally wanted a Speedmaster from 1969 but one in the condition I was prepared to buy was too expensive. When I realised the above about the 30th anniversary it made it the obvious choice and one even better than from 1969.
    5) I love the look of it. There is no point wearing a watch you don't enjoy.
    6) Coincidentally my brother also bought a Speedmaster before me (for other reasons). So this also has a relevance for us as brothers.
    I wear it frequently and at all important events. It is not a garage queen in immaculate condition but has marks and scratches from my wearing it. It has risen in value a lot since I bought it. But I will never sell it. The monetary value is not important to me however rich or poor I may be in the future. Other watches may be bought and sold but not this one. My son will inherit it when my time here has ended and he knows it goes with me through life, good and bad, and the connection I have to the watch. He knows why I bought it. I am sure he will one day wear it at my funeral and it makes me happy for him as I hope it will give him some comfort on that difficult day. It is a pity I'm not really able to do the same for my daughter in quite the same way although she has inherited my mothers watch and I am sure she will wear that at the same occasion.

    You could also add the Automatic Acquaracer from Tag Heuer... it’s a great way to start, a good looking-quality and very affordable watch, at a price point of around 1950 USD.

    Omega Speedmaster Professional, Zenith El Primero Chronomaster 1969 and Grand Seiko Snowflake. Yup. Pretty much.

    My initial newby step into the luxury watch ownership was going to be a Seamaster 300m. Whilst saving money and uncountable hours online viewing and reading watches and picking a new favorite every other day, I ended (or started) with buying a Zenith El Primero 36'000 VpH. No regrets!

    My first luxury watch was the Breitling SuperOcean Heritage II. It remains a favourite in my small collection. Love the videos, Teddy!

    I got the SBGA413 for my first watch. I've been waiting for a GMT Master II since November. After that, I'll get the Speedmaster.

    Not a bad choice there IMO. I already own two of the watches on this list so for the third one it would be either the Breitling Super Ocean Heritage or the Black Bay chrono.

      Those Super Oceans are so nice. I’ll bet you would love it if you don’t already have one.

    Watching the explorer filmed so nicely here - like a dagger through the heart as I remain painfully in queue 😭
