Custom firmware means that your region doesn't have to remain region locked. If you're looking to use a unit instead of just keeping it as a collectable then it's the best way to use one from abroad. DSi units from abroad can even have their firmware changed to another region/language as well as using customer firmware! It's also worth noting that your original slab 2DS can play DS games from anywhere - the DS wasn't region locked! Your New Super Mario Bros doesn't have to be from the same region.
@@velkymuftu I’m aware, but I was specifically referencing his 2DS in the video. The original DS carts weren’t region locked in any capacity. By extension, 3DS and 2DS isn’t when running in its DS mode. Apologies if the way I worded it wasn’t clear. The DSi can have its firmware flashed to another region’s firmware rather than just the language changed and region changed on the 3DS. I imagine this would have also changed the region for DSiWare and DSi exclusive games too but TWiLight Menu also appears to circumvent that. Mostly redundant for that purpose. I stumbled across this recently when I picked up the SaGa 2 DSi, but it seemed fairly pointless when TWiLight Menu is a more capable front end and can have a language that differs from the system as well. I believe the creator of the DSi firmware changer guide wanted to make it foolproof in case the SD card was removed though. That’s the extent of my knowledge tbh. I only know what I needed to learn for myself haha
Really, just install CFW and use cartridges. The menus will be in Japanese, and you'll still have the Japanese eShop so very little English in there (for the 2 more days it's open). There's also region changing which would get the menus in English, though it's a little more ambitious and you lose all access to any eShop (meaningless in 2 more days). But yeah, if CFW is installed, cartridges from any region will simply work. You can also use it to pirate if you want to, but if you don't you don't need to, and installing CFW just to break region locks is legal. Or of course you can always take the bottom part apart and replace the motherboard with one from your preferred region. The top part of a New 2DS XL is glued together like a modern phone so it's a royal pain to take apart, but the bottom is just some screws and ribbon cables. Still, look up a guide and pay attention since some of the ribbon connectors open at the front, some open at the back and others slide in and out without opening, and if you open one the wrong way it breaks.
9:15 All 3DS models have the same resolution (effectively 400 x 240 pixels in 2D mode), so DS games aren't any sharper on the smaller 3DS models. They may appear sharper because you're looking at the same amount of pixels on a smaller area, but both images are equally blurry (identical actually). However: You can play DS games in their native resolution (256 x 192 pixels) by holding START or SELECT while launching the game. This results in a smaller, but sharper image with black borders since it isn't being resized to fit the 3DS screens resolution. On regular sized 3DS models the resulting image looks tiny but on the XL models it's actually closer to the size of a regular Nintendo DS, so the XL models might even be better at playing regular DS games
@@destiny13777 technically true, but I wouldn’t call the double pixel thing blurryness, it just looks like lines going horizontally across the screen don’t think it’s very distracting personally, if at all
If you hold SELECT while booting a normal DS game on a 3DS or 2DS, the image of the screens will not be stretched and you will view the game in 1:1 pixel mode, with black borders. It's a nice way for a more authentic DS experience on the newer hardware.
I'm in the UK and I own this 2DS just because it was the cheapest new, New 2DS XL that I could get my hands on at the time :) Didn't realise it was rare or desirable haha, nice to see a video on it
These days, buying any 3DS console from any region isn't as big of a problem as it once was. Especially with the eShop being shut down soon, now is the best time to mod these consoles with Custom Firmware, such as Luma3DS which removes the region lock.
The region lock only applies to 3DS games, original Nintendo DS games should play perfectly fine on every 2DS/3DS from whatever region you have them from. Also there are relatively easy ways around the region lock for 3DS games if you're so inclined...
The region lock also applies to DSi-enhanced DS games, like Pokemon Black and White for example. You can't just import any DS game and expect it to work; you have to make sure it's not DSi-enhanced. Though, like you said, there are relatively easy ways around this region locking.
when i saw this video i remembered a year ago i was gonna get one of these but i completely forgot, checked the prices now. they are like 500 AUD!!!! just a year ago a boxed one was around 170. kinda sad now
I was tempted to buy one of these a while back (the UK edition), they are straight up beautiful. I wish nintendo continued this with the switch, im guessing the reason why is that the switch is also a home console and the body itself is a lot simpler. Edit: BTW I bought the UK edition of this lavender and white console a few months later 😂
Love the lavender color ways! Never seen either of those before you showed them off. Now i def want to pick them up someday. Always wanted either 2ds model. Probably get one and hack it eventually! next time you want to play DS games on a 2DS XL or 3DS XL, hold in the start button right after you start the game, while the game is starting, and you'll get a 1:1 aspect ratio just like on the DS. Same with GB VC games for a 1:1 aspect ratio as the GB.
9:15 All 3DS/2DS models, old or new, XL or small, have the same screen resolution. XL systems just have a lower pixel density screen, so things are larger and you can see the pixels more. It's like the difference between getting a 12" laptop with a 1080p screen and a 17" laptop with a 1080p screen. DS games use a lower resolution and are stretched in the same blurry way on all of them -- similar to playing a game in 720p on a 1080p monitor. It looks blurrier on the XL simply because it's bigger. You can hold start or select while launching the game for "pixel perfect" mode, which will appear smaller but perfectly sharp since it just puts a black border around the true DS screen resolution instead of stretching it to fullscreen -- like playing a game at 720p in windowed mode on a 1080p screen. On "XL" systems, this makes the picture about the size it is on a DS Lite. On small systems, things are more like Gameboy Micro size. That lavender wedge 2DS looks amazing. It's a shame they didn't give the lavender 2DS XL the same treatment.

My biggest gripe with the *NEW* 3DS and 2DS models is the power button placement. It sits exactly where my pinky naturally rests, and the last game I played on mine (Samus Returns) I turned off accidentally several times, losing progress.
Same to both of what your said here but there's an even bigger sin with the New Model. That being the Micro SD being stored under the Back-plate instead of the Side like the original models. It's fine if you don't download a lot of stuff or anything pertaining to the SD card. But if your an emulation and fan-game nut like me this is egregious since even popping the plate off once without breaking it or stripping the screws is suffering. But when you have to take the dang thing out over 10 times while getting Homebrew Software to work going back and forth from the 3ds to PC is pure Hell. And that's if you leave the plate off the whole time after the first takeoff. And that's if you don't discover even more games or software you want to download or Rom from PC.
I don't know exactly how you're getting your pinkie there, but if you get a clear protective shell for it, it makes the button harder to press accidentally since it's down in a hole in the case.
If only Nintendo would've just made their entire catalog of hardware available in all markets.
I mean you can atleast easily mod it to deal with region lock. Still annoying to get these cool consoles imported from Japan

You know for live streaming you could get a modded 3ds with video capture card, I remember I used to watch a Brazilian youtuber doing gameplay with one of them, the image quality was much better even him used to say that on his display was much colorful… unfortunately we will never see an OLED 3ds 😢
bro i dont understand why all the other exclusive 2ds xl are so good looking but its always from japan
Aren’t these like 5 years old… meaning this video is like 5 years late
Have that 2ds LL 2. Really love it 💖
They have a few other colours in the same series. But lavender is the best
Nice!
5:20 My 2DS xl inside a carrying case manage to have its top half cracked inside mt schoolbag, never had any problem with any other Nintendo hardware besides the joycons.
Top screen is too flimsy, or better said, unprotected. Should have traded a bit of slickness for some thickness imo
I bought a top screen to replace it but i have yet to do the repair, when I'm not working i prefer playing honestly
dude, the little cover for the game cartridge and SD slot snaps on. bro ...
You can Soft mod and change the region of the console to play inferior region games like PAL on a Japanese unit
You don't even need to change the region. Cfw makes the console region free! :D
@@rudytrevizo7766 Not really
@@Nikkerston i have seen it said both ways. It’s frustrating that I can’t find a clear cut answer. I find people saying Luma makes your console region free and then i see other people saying its only cia files that are region free
@@rudytrevizo7766 ONLY Region Free CIA Files the itself console dosent become region free
I was searching that exact model, but it seems that it's to expensive to me :(
My biggest gripe with the *NEW* 3DS and 2DS models is the power button placement.
My boy here needs to see the dragonquest slime 2dsXL. No disrespect to this nice piece of hardware.
Would love to watch you play some of these DS games. I've never seen any of them.
I have one like this in my collection, I had to repair it, the top screen had been smashed, apart from that, everything was fine.
I like the New 2DS XL Purple (MK7 bundle) more.
That display has a serious glare.
I NEED A 3DS OR 2DS XL NOW! I MISS IT!
