- Join me as I head out for a wild camp at the amazing Scales Tarn on Blencathra in the stunning Lake District of Cumbria and take on the notorious Sharp Edge.
I even take a refreshing wild swim in the tarn before settling down for my obligatory dram of mead.
A great journey and one of the best camps I've done yet.
Thank you for watching and if you enjoy the video please give it a like and subscribe as this will really help my channel grow.
Enjoy...

Great advice about the ridge :)
Great video Ian, really enjoying your exploits! You’re a braver man than me with that scramble….my toes were curling just watching! 😂 really enjoyable watch. All the best, Marcus
Another great video, you sound like an Armed forces veteran by the terminology you use, I am an army veteran so recognise the slang. I’m beginning my own wild camping adventures in the spring. I’ve subbed too, I always support small hiking/outdoor channels just like ours. 😊
Great video, looks like a fantastic spot 👍🏻
Thank you Stuart,
It's a great spot that I highly recommend 👍🏻
It's not as busy as some of the more popular tarns in the Lakes.
It looks amazing 😍
Thank you! 🥰
what a lovely mornig you had
It was a great morning indeed!
Great views like that are rare in the Lake District as the mountains make their own weather but I'm glad it turned out well.
Hope you enjoyed the video and thanks for the comment 👍🏻
Enjoyed that , thanks ...subscribed .
Glad you enjoyed it Peter!
Thank you for taking the time to let me know too, it's greatly appreciated.
Take care!
Nice one ! Should get yourself a 360 cam for the scrambles, would compliment your video 👌🏻
Cheers mate, I was waiting for you to sell yours actually 🤣
Hey Ian! Nice to have crossed your path and to meet you! Cheers, Roderick (doing the c2c)
P.s. did you meet the british army medic on the way up or didn't you?
Hey Roderick!
Hoe gaat het?
It was great meeting you yesterday at Patterdale.
I'm not sure how the video will turn out as the weather was pretty challenging throughout the night.
Best of luck with your challenge my friend, massive respect!
P.s I didn't see the Medic that you mentioned but she would've been insane to take the route that I was using whilst carrying that much weight 😂
Keep in touch buddy and stay safe!
Did you have any emergency gear in your pocket, when you did the climb, i.e. first aid dressings, a whistle, cell phone , foil blanket etc ? One slip and a grazed shin or broken kneecap later !!!! Enjoyed the video . Cheers from the mountains of NZ 😊😊
Hi there! Great question. Yes, I always carry a small personal first aid kit on my person (clips to my belt) if I ever leave my pack. Just a small off-the-shelf one from an outdoor shop but I've added a few items like a foil blanket and spare (mini) head torch and whistle etc as well as my cell phone which I always keep on my person.
So glad you enjoyed the video, that genuinely means a lot. I'd love to get myself over to NZ for some climbing one day!
@@ian_fox Hello again, thanks for the reply. I think that you would enjoy our bush and mountains, but not to be taken lightly. The understory is very dense and a compass is a must (or GPS), go off the track and you are down to 200/300 metres an hour. many vines and creepers hinder the way, especially in the Tararua range. (see it on line) and of course you won't see a soul from one week to the next. I just finished a 3 day tramp and never saw a soul. After 50+ years in the mountains it has kept me fit and I go often, many solos and with others . 46 tramps (hikes) so far this year (67 last year) and not finished yet. If ever you come down this way make it a long stay, there is so much climbing and tramping to do. It will test you to your limit !! ATB. Cheers from NZ😊😊
@@mountainmantararua8824 wow! The Tararua Range looks spectacular! (I just googled it) It definitely looks like a challenge but also a place you can really lose yourself and get away from everything (and everyone 😂).
I'm certainly a map and compass guy but a GPS is great as a back up navigation device.
Lastly let me just say thank you for the messages and your kind words about my video, I can only hope that I am still as active and fit as you are after 50+ years in mountains.
Keep up the great work sir! 💪🏻
Thankfully no one took a fancy to your £700 tent while you were on Sharp Edge 🙏
What sleeping mat are you useing Ian?
