I think there's a compromise personally. I don't scream and slap myself, but I'm also not an emotionless stiff. I just do a "mini-hype up", and I found that is pretty sustainable. Just a brief "come-on" or so on a heavy set.
That's definitely the most realistic in a public gym setting too. I forgot to mention that part. I wonder if training at home leads to some madness by being free to do whatever you want. It is interesting to me that many at meets do act "out of character" relative to big gym lifts, partially due to significance of the moment, but I bet a good part is just the social acceptability of it.
I'm extremely dead inside, but I start to live again when lifting hyped up. I'm basically bored and annoying 90% of the time of my life, the 10% is while I am lifting
17th extraversion 14th agreeableness 96th Conscientiousness 61st Neuroticism 6th openness Also like you, if doing 5x5 (which I'm currently doing with an amrap to RPE 9 5th set) I save the hype for that last/top set
That's a pretty interesting aspect of this that I never considered. I scored low in neuroticism too. I noticed a long time ago that I don't really get "traditionally" hyped, but instead when I'm going for a big lift, my focus narrows and I get way more serious-faced, which I guess constitutes getting hyped internally. Informative as ever, Jonnie.
Hey Johnny. I've come across your videos in the past but never subscribed. So here I am. Thanks for the free strength training program. I'm currently in week one of the intermediate plan. I am preparing my for my first ever powerlifting meet in early summer 2018 in 150lbs class. I wanna thank you for your awesome content and knowledge. Peace and love.
Calmness and staying tight is the best way for me because once I started pyshing myself out my energy tends to be all over the place and I can't stay as tight because the adrenaline is just to high . normally I have to feel the weight first... Once its started getting hard and I start slowing down then I start screaming to push my muscles pass that sticking point .
I think I'm going crazy because it sounds like the volume gets much louder after each edit, but then it goes back down, and then BOOM, it's louder, and goes back down, etc. But it never really get louder overall. Great video content. Thanks.
Came from a martial arts background (BJJ, muay thai, boxing, wrestling) in all of them, calm is really valued. I kind of put this into my lifting. I at best like to take some breaths, build myself up during my rest listening to music, almost meditative, and them just go for a set. I prefer absolute laser-like focus as opposed to a big rage. Since I started doing this I've made much more progress and feel less drained at the ends of my workouts, despite the fact that I still go pretty hard if I do say so myself. I typically point that even though I don't excite a big adrenaline rush, in turn my cortisol levels won't get excited either. Might be broscience, but just a thought.
I get hyped every time I lift heavy, headbanging to metal and going crazy, especially when hitting a one rep max. What kind of maniac doesn't get psyched when hitting high numbers?
I tend to act like J.Norris on that one. I feel like I'm getting better result when I get really hype from the inside while acting somewhat calm outside. I picture myself as some kind of pressurized piston ready to explode. It's also the case with my daily job (EMT) where I always have that cool "it's going to be okay face" when inside it's more like "holy sh*t". Long time follower here, great work Mister C.
I used to love get hyped up, but I found I always needing it, when your calm, your always clam and you always have it, when your trying to hype yourself your most likely to forget your cues and could snap your shit up.
Extraversion: 42nd Agreeableness: 14th Conscientiousness: 79th Neuroticism: 21st Openness: 16th Pretty surprised about my openness to be honest. I hype myself up internally on pr attempts and last AMRAP on compound movement.
I have no adrenaline at all, and my squat days, approaching the end of a training cycle, always scare the shit out of me. I create my motivation one rep at a time, and I always get sure that I get the fucking work DONE. I'm never hyped, and I drink a fuckload of coffee. I'm simply pretty much introverted, but I accept who I am and I strive to do my best with what I have.
I’ve noticed when I had programming that revolved around riskier lifts (heavy singles or high RPE) I would have to hype myself up. Now I have more of a sub max/volume approach to training and I never have to/want to psych myself up.
I can only speak for myself but I have noticed that pumping myself up on a lift doesn’t change the weight but it does change the perceived difficulty. I also notice that when I get pumped up I burn out faster. Again the first few reps seem easier than normal but the rage subsides and the strength tappers off. No appreciable difference in max weight. As a side note I use the smalov jr. a lot for squat and bench. 515 squat 525 dead (conventional) 320 bench @ 252lbs and 5’11” and change. I know that’s a sad bench but my wingspan is 77”. I don’t train dead’s I just ride on my squat. I’m a lazy lifter.
I am generally a pretty calm person. I actually need extra motivation sometimes and getting hyped and having the right "mindset" improves my performance. It does need to be used wisely tho (for myself) as it is draining.
Tested in at: 97th percentile for extraversion, 83rd percentile for agreeableness, 50th percentile for Conscientiousness, 97th percentile for Neuroticism (lol) and 98th percentile for openness. Should explain a lot. Me hyping up looks scary sometimes.
I have found that I don't really notice much of a difference when I hype myself up. if I go into a lift feeling ok and with the expectation that I am going to succeed, if I visualize success I usually do well. When I don't really think about it at all I find I am a bit weaker. I don't have to stand there and get my heart racing and "hype" up, it's much more of a meditative visualization. I do have an utterly massive caffeine intake but it is all the time so I always have that level of caffeine running through my system and am still what is essentially baseline. My personality test came up 41% extrovert (average) and then low in every other category, skewing towards 20-30%.
I did an experiment with both... Being hyped up and screaming seems to make heavier weights easy to lift and I theorize it's because more adrenaline is released(fight or flight response).
I don't do well when I get hyped up because it's a distraction for me. I prefer being in a content/positive mood to being aggressive. It's easier for me to recruit a greater percentage of my physical faculties, and enjoy the activity more, when I keep a level head and focus. That said, basement-era Rubish vids are still fun to watch.
My strongest lifts have always happened when I'm by myself, with headphones on completely calm, collected and focused on the work in front of me. I find that if I'm around a lot of energy or hyped up people I gas myself out too soon. I guess everyone is different.
I scored 50% on neuroticism I hype a little externally, but it's usually just flexing to make sure I can engage my muscles. Most people say I am pretty calm.
I want to calm everything down into pure zen mode at least 10 minutes before a max. Calm, yet ready. Relaxed, yet tense. Like a samurai meditating when starting his day. A man who is ready for any challenge without any fear. So I don't talk to anyone, and I just sit on my ass and gather my strength. I think directing energy outwards is a waste of energy. All the energy goes into that deep heavy barbell squat. Nothing else. That one rep. But I don't max that often. It is a planned effort. I do want to try Bulgarian, so I can get used to near max weight. Sounds very interesting. When it comes to music, my friend who happens to own the gym I work out at, who is a powerlifter coach, he always puts on Ghost when the lifts get heavy. Because he knows I love them so much! Ghost never hits a wrong chord with me. I am glad I have such a friend. No hiphop on my strength test day :) Lots of Ozzy, Sabbath, Zeppelin and Ghost!
I think it can vary between lifts too, I like to concentrate more on squats because I can snap my shit up if I don’t follow the right cues. So for me over arousal is detrimental to performance. It would make sense since the inverted U theory of arousal can be task specific. But as a whole the sport should be performed at high arousal as you don’t have to worry about the side effects trembling limbs and tunnel vision.
I benched over 400 lbs at 190 lbs bodyweight. I'm a Christian so I meditated and prayed before I lifted it. I rest about 5 minutes in between heavy bench lifts in training. I'm not one of those people that yell and beat my head into a post before I lift.
I'm a calm lifter. I like to focus on the task, think about what I have to do, and before the lift, I just clear my mind and let it happen. I'm not one for causing a scene.
Thoughts on ammonia inhalants/smelling salts for arousal? Some guys appear addicted, use excessively (Juji!), while others, again, like to emulate. Probably not good after prolonged use. 🤦🏻♀️
In Neuroticism I was like the 95th percentile and I do get very hyped up for lifts. Especially any heavier set. I get to the point of shaking because I feel like so much adrenaline is pumping through me.
Extraversion - 31st percentile - low Agreeableness - 53rd percentile - about average Conscientiousness - 38th percentile - low Neuroticism - 99th percentile - extremely high Openness - 25th percentile - very low Okay. That could explain why I hit myslef in the face before sets ahah.
Pin me, based Candytoe. I deserve it!

BUUUUT EEEEEERIIIIIICCCCC
I’m here to show YOU
The Bugez doesnt measure caffeine intake by milligram, he measures by pots of coffee
Eric Bugenhagen changed my life, hyped up lifting is just so much more fun
MINDSET
Banana_Mix You spelled faggy wrong.
PermanentHigh Did you not watch the video? Being hyped up doesn't mean that it shows externally.
PermanentHigh Heavy is relative. A 275 squat can be a good accomplishment.
Micah L heavy isn't relative. 275lbs is 275lbs no natter who is squatting it. It's not heavy. Making noise for 275 is just attention seeking.
Who would have imagined a few years ago that Pete Rubish would be used as an example of a calm lifter?
Lol I thought that same shit
Crazygoat85 How's the psychiatrist going for the swolliosis
Carlos_ bruh
BUT JOHNNYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Can't do hyped up lifting when you are dead inside
Cloud Strife it actually works pretty well for me i feel
Oskar "you feel" well there's your problem bud
I'm extremely dead inside, but I start to live again when lifting hyped up. I'm basically bored and annoying 90% of the time of my life, the 10% is while I am lifting
That's the Russian way right there, they all looked they saw some shit in Chechnya.
Cloud Strife he likes it cold
Eric's Channel is about to blow up

freakied0550 very similar results, just my agreeableness is a little higher and my neuroticism is 97%.
I rather go with IT'S A MINDSET! IT'S A FREAKING MINDSET!
fat as
I save my hype for the set that's gonna be the most taxing.
You grace us with your delicious wisdom, Jaw-knee.
Ben's a calm lifter whilst I tend to get myself hyped up, sometimes a little too much. Amazing how different everyone is. Great vid brother 💪🤘🏻
>Hyped vs calm
>Thumbnail is the two most hyped up lifters
This is post washer and dryer Pete. He has moments of his basement self, but on that meet he was as calm as it gets while squatting.
CanditoTrainingHQ he has calmed down hugely, almost looks like a different lifter. I just thought the joke had to be made
Pupper Faust he laid of the tren and halo
Eric and Pete are the 2 most baddass lifters!
I was just checkin your channel for new videos... AWWW JONNNIIEEEE
Thought it into existence Lavar Ball style.
Nice breakdown. The Buuuuuggggeezzzzzz!
Nice first name ;)
10/10 video!

God damn Johnny you make the best, most articulate, and intelligently formatted videos.
PLIS DO A TRAINING VIDYA WITH THE BUGEZZZZ
I work out at a home gym so I can just blast Dragon Ball Z or Rocky soundtracks and yell a lot
You should consider moving.
Mike T is the king of a calm lifer!

Brow God putting up new video - Today is clearly the best day of the week
Woke up in the middle of my sleep as soon as this notification popped up.
Hopefully I didn't rob any of your gains.
ITSS A MINDSEEETTTT!!!!!!
Some of my best workouts are when it's early in the morning, and I feel like falling asleep in between my sets, as I sip my coffee.
do both, get hyped til u get a tolerance, lift til you can without what you were hyped, rinse/repeat
You always cover the aspects of lifting no one thinks about in great perspectives
I think I'm going crazy because it sounds like the volume gets much louder after each edit, but then it goes back down, and then BOOM, it's louder, and goes back down, etc. But it never really get louder overall.

I drank milk, coffee and listened to heavy metal when training...i'm now bigger and stronger than ever. ITS A MIIIIINDSET!!!!!!!
That was a very accurate personality assessment. I'm surprised.

clarence kennedy is the calm-man posterboy
I generally look at it in 3 categories... Hype/Confidence/Fear where Hype fluctuates based on % of Confidence/Fear.
I want to calm everything down into pure zen mode at least 10 minutes before a max. Calm, yet ready. Relaxed, yet tense. Like a samurai meditating when starting his day. TBH I'm only hyped 3 seconds before the lift, and part of starting my breath for vasulva is part of it.
I love the outtro

Love the comment about taking the L. I find myself from time to time taking an L with my midnight shift schedule. Glad I'm not the only one.
Hyped up. Period.
I'm a calm lifter. I like to focus on the task, think about what I have to do, and before the lift, I just clear my mind and let it happen. I'm not one for causing a scene.
The most relaxed lifter at a high level I've witnessed is LS McClain. The dude won the IPF world's smiling!
You woke, thank you sir
Very darn insightful
ITSSSSS A MINDDDSETTT!!!!
im getting hype watching this
Thoughts on ammonia inhalants/smelling salts for arousal? Some guys appear addicted, use excessively (Juji!), while others, again, like to emulate. Probably not good after prolonged use. 🤦🏻♀️
