  • Nitro at Six Flags Great Adventure was one of the first Bolliger & Mabillard hyper coasters. This B&M mega coaster takes riders on an explosive journey through the woods. The ride has a secluded layout and has the record as the most cycled ride at Six Flags in a year, but does this coaster have airtime? Find out in this review!

    In 2 visits to Great Adventure last year we rode this coaster 12 times per visit, both days doing it 10 times in a row. We were allowed to just keep reriding it as long as rows didn't fill up with new people. If they did, we could move back rows. The first night snow was all over the ground and we watched the sun set during the 10 rides.

    That last part you said sums it up perfectly, Nitro is the perfect foil to El Toro. It is my go to marathon coaster at Great Adventure because of how re-ridable it is. I rode it on a full train, last ride of the day on a 90 degree July day last year and I legit got some weak ejector airtime on the camelbacks.
    Nitro is awesome and I look forward to riding it whenever I go to Great Adventure. I'm sad to hear the station music is gone though, the Mortal Kombat Remix was the perfect fit for the ride. As much as I'm looking forward to Jersey Devil, I'm hoping that it can take away some of Nitro's line so I can ride Nitro even more, not that Nitro's line with its excellent ops is usually a problem.

    Of the 3 b&m hypers I've ridden now, I probably would put Nitro at the bottom, but it's still a fantastic ride. The first 4 elements (drop, first turn, first camelback, and turnaround) I found to be pretty weak for a b&m hyper, but then the second half was phenomenal. I got some good sustained floater on all the other hills, and the helix was surprisingly intense. I greyed out there every single ride, including my first train of the day ride, and I wasnt expecting it

    • @CanobieCoaster
      @CanobieCoaster  3 года назад +1

      I agree the strength of the airtime on the first few camelbacks may not be as strong as some other B&M hypers, but it's still very sustained and I love the setting.

    Great review. I agree it gets over-hated. Growing up in NJ this coaster was a big deal when it opened. The only thing comparable in the area was Steel Force, but I think most would agree Nitro just felt like an overall better/higher-quality ride in almost all aspects. I worked at the park in 2008, primarily at Nitro. In the summer we would achieve up to 15,000 riders on a good day. It's really the workhorse of the park.

  • @datboi1026
    @datboi1026 3 года назад +1

    My favorite hill on the ride is probably the second one before that big helix, you just float there for almost the entire hill, unlike the first few that just launch you from the top of the hill. This hill just lets you float there the whole time, with a bit of launching you out of the seat, making in my opinion one of the best airtime moments on the ride, besides the return run that’s an outstanding finale to the ride. The first couple hills tho are far more intense than this last portion of the ride tho, making for probably the best coaster at the park.

From the 9 moments of sustained floater airtime to the posative Gs on the upwards helix into the mid course to the laterals and whip off the big turns. It is really a great ride. I hope to ride it someday cause I love my airtime.

    Nitro is my 3rd favorite B&M hyper, behind Mako & Candymonium. I do prefer Goliath's layout to Nitro, but Goliath's rattle puts it in 4th place. Nitro's slight rattle didn't bother me. I loved the setting and the views out into the woods during the ride. It really did feel like I was traveling far away from the park. And the floater airtime delivered on every ride. I don't think as highly of B&M hypers as most people do, but Nitro is one of my favorites of the bunch.

    Just got back from Six Flags GA, and did not have such great luck. Fright fest brought in a crowd like I never seen before after 4pm. Was able to hit Nitro 3 times in the AM. The rear car was by FAR the best spot for floater air time. I tried to take a night ride on it, and it got shutdown for reasons unknown (it opened again about an hour later). Went over to Superman which was a 2.5 hour wait, and that also got shutdown as I was on line. People were stuck waiting in the return bay in that crazy superman position for over an hour. El Toro has been down every time I went this season. I had no idea GA was open for Christmas. I never rode a coaster in freezing temps before, could be interesting lol.

    • @CanobieCoaster
      @CanobieCoaster  3 года назад

      By cycled, I meant number of riders. I have no doubt something like Dark Knight may top it in terms of cars dispatched. Nitro is a capacity monster with the 3 trains, 36 passengers each.

  • @CoasterRoaster
    @CoasterRoaster 2 года назад

    Since you mentioned that nitro runs in pretty much any temperature, does that extend to the rest of the rides at gadv, or just nitro?

    • @CanobieCoaster
      @CanobieCoaster  2 года назад

      Assuming rides are supposed be open (ex. Golden Kingdom, Festival Carnival, and the western area are closed for HITP), they run pretty much any ride in any condition. Kingda Ka is the one that can close for wind, but I've seen it run below freezing and in the dense fog before. Jersey Devil is a little more conservative on windy days than most rides at the park, but it's usually open. El Toro on cold days and windy days needs to be front-loaded if the train isn't full since it's a valley-risk.

    Nitro was the first full size, non kiddie coaster I ever rode, at 8 years old. My dad took me to Great Adventure in June of 2007, and on our way into the park, we asked someone what would be a good coaster to start on that didn't go upside down. The guy we asked recommended Nitro. So, we got in line, and despite the sign saying 60 minutes, we were on in about 20. We went for the front row. As we ascended the lift hill, which felt endless, my dad started to get very worried that he got me on a ride I was not ready for. I'll never forget going over th e first drop. It's only 68 degrees, but it felt beyond vertical. Even though I had no idea what I was getting on at first, I actually liked it.
    With many more coasters under my belt, Nitro is still near the top. For hypercoasters, I do prefer Superman at SFNE, because it is more intense and better paced, but Nitro is still well paced and has much more comfortable. It's like sitting in business class vs economy on a flight. Both are far and away better than Steel Force at Dorney Park and Goliath at La Ronde, the only other hypers I've been on.

    After watching: my only minor quibble is this: You can't call a ride that loads and unloads at the same place over its 5394' layout complete until the train arrives back at the loading stn again where the ride started, but I quibble.
    I've heard Nitro has a rattle, but from what I've managed to figure out: it's possible that rattle was more prominent on one train a few years ago. If SFGA NJ does what any good park would do, they'd maintain every train at least once a year during the short off season (by taking the train apart, inspecting every part of it and either fixing, refurbishing or replacing any parts as needed, resulting in less rattling). While that doesn't eliminate the possibility that another train would have the worst rattle of any of Nitro's trains the following year, it still makes it more possible that if maintaining the allegedly offending train didn't get rid of the rattle, then the rattle'd most likely be a track issue.
    Nitro was the longest, tallest, and fastest B&M hyper when it opened, and yes, it has plenty of airtime. I hope to ride it one day, but not as much as I'd want to ride some other B&M hypers, not to mention Jersey Devil and El Toro in the very same park. But like I said before watching this: Nitro has duration, length, speed and plenty of airtime, even if it's not the best or the most airtime on a B&M hyper. But it probably has more airtime than even most B&M hypers, and that says a lot. Thanks for posting!

    I would love to see how this would be different if it were built within the last 5 years. Nitro is definitely a great ride, but I wish it didn't crawl over the airtime hills so much. I found the floater air to be less than desired/expected, but maybe it needs full trains for that (wasn't a popular day when I visited).

    Tbh, I think Nitro gets hated on a lot. You have to look at the bigger picture. Like you said, it opened in 2001, and it was only the third hyper coaster built by B&M, only after Apollo's Chariot and Raging Bull in 1999. So while two years has passed between all three of those, Nitro is definitely a better ride, but still it had room for improvement. B&M has only since perfected their hyper coaster design through the 2000s and into the 2010s and 2020s with their 2nd generation and 3rd generation hyper coaster models. In my opinion, the 2nd gen and 3rd gen hypers are better, but the 1st gen hypers from B&M are still good rides for sure. Even some of the 1st gen hypers after Nitro, such as Goliath at Six Flags Over Georgia and La Ronde are definitely better than it. So Nitro is not a bad ride at all. It just goes to show the progression of B&M's hyper coaster model since then.
