Well, I have both the Tamron and the new Sony GM II; the Sony is sharper throughout its focal range, but I still like the versatility of the Tamron so sold the Sony. I now travel with the Tamron and Sony 14GM...that's all I need!
This is what I'm planning to do as well. Buy the 35-150 and put it in my bag together with the Sony 14GM and Samyang 24mm 1.8. Or buy 24-70GM II together with 14GM and 150-500. Tough choices.
I have the 14/1.8 GM too and considering either the Sony 20-70/4 + Tamron 35-150 or the Sony 24-70/2.8 + 70-200/2.8GM2. I wasn’t expecting a third party lens to be able to keep up with the GM optics, and, as I shoot a lot of 50-85 range, the tamron option will allow me to shoot across the range without changing lenses which can be annoying in crowded / rainy conditions!
The same here. Currently I have 14mm, 24-70mm. I prefer 24-105 or -135 or -150 and f/2.8 or faster but no one is on the market. So I think my combo if I get Tamron 35-150 will be 14mm + 35-150.
I just bought the Tamron and this lens is really amazing. I know: I've seen lots of reviews and they were all very positive but it is different when you use this lens yourself in real life. It is beyond amazing. For traveling I would also use this one combined with the Sony 14GM. What a combo!
I’m getting the Tamron eventually. It feels like it will be the standard for a new generation of lenses. But that’s just my opinion, and I am not a professional. I suck. I’ll leave now.
Indeed, what tamron did is sort of tricky, the optimized for 85, so all the "standard" zooms will likely lose to sharpness contests in the 70-105 range (some primes likely as well). It doesnt really need to compete with telephotos because simply going as wide as 35mm automatically wins it when doing a focal range comparison. I was using it this weekend with the sigma 24-70 back and forth (upcoming comparison), and as someone who is behind the camera, I didnt miss 24 much at all, working with 35mm is quite common, and 150 is a decent amount of reach.
I have recently purchased the Tamron 35-150 and love it and just to cover my bases I also purchased the Tamron 17-28 as I do like to use 24mm from time to time. Great Video by the way :-)
If I would start from the scratch the Tamron would be my choice. Frequent lens changes are annoying me and 70mm isn't always long enough for my style of shooting. 35mm is usually wide enough for me and for wider shots I can carry a second, less expensive and quite small camera and lens with me.
Just purchased the Tamron and took it on a trip to Monterey CA. All I can say is "OUTSTANDING" overall. I actually sold my Sigma 24-70 and my Sigma 85mm prime and do not regret it at all.
That’s exactly what I’m doing! Haven’t touched my Sigma 24-70since getting the Tamron. I have a Sony G 20mm f1.8 for wide angle. Might rebuy the 17-28 Tamron but the 35-150 doesn’t leave my camera!

Been thinking about upgrading to this exact setup and selling my 70-200 GM Mk 1. Have you ever used the 70-200? If so, how has it compared to the 35-150? Also are you doing photo or video?
The subtle dry comedy makes this video absolute gold. Great reviews but theres no questions the Tamron takes it. I ordered mine a couple weeks ago but they're on crazy backorder right now so I dont know when or if mine will every get here 😧
sorry to hear about the backorder, I had to cancel my preorder because they took too long, and grabbed one that popped into stock at procam! Good luck with your lens search.
Still waiting for my big change from Canon DSLR to Sony with this lens. Can't wait, I think this lens will cover all of my studio needs for model photography, and then some.
Im debating between Sigma 24-70 and Tamron 35-150. I mainly use my camera (previous GH5 owner) for taking pictures but i really would like to be able to take videos. Is the lack of OSS on Tamron a huge issue knowing that it is heavy, therefore should be more stable anyway? Also what would you suggest for wider end if i went with 35 to 150?
Yeah.. no... see? You should have a ton more subscribers man... i love your delivery style, fun and informative, instantly subbed 👏 just bought the tamron btw, whenever Amazon decides to deliver it 🤣
This was really helpful. I was worried about the bokeh and the flare, but both turned out a lot better than I expected. While the flare is indeed more prominent, I actually liked it for it's esthetic. The Sony looked boring. Great is as well how your recordings show the warmer color of the Tamron, which I quite liked.
Makes me want to compare the Tamron myself. If IQ/sharpness is even better it could be the better lens for our road trips covering more focal length. Having the 16-35 GM makes it a great combo too. Indeed I would have to rearrange my photo backpack because the 24-70 GM does exactly fit the height. Good thing to mention that. Thanks for your work!
tamron is optimized for ~85 hence beating most of these zoom lenses, if not all of them. it doesnt have to optimize for 35 since these zooms are typically wider, however being f2 @ 35, it can beat zooms because it has room to stop down. it's a funny little game with the tamron, I see it as a 70-200 replacement, at least for me that was the case, and it's been working out far better than imagined.
Thanks! Would you also say the Tamron 35-150 is sharper than the SOny 70-200/2.8 GM2? I’m considering getting a telephoto zoom for travel and very curious about this as a mid-tele range replacement to the typical 70-200/2.8 GM2 and 24-70/2.8 GM2
To buy a7r5 with tamron 35-150 and 20mm 1.8, or a7iv with 24-70gm2 and 70-200gm2? I heard sony gm lenses have superior autofocus (xd linear motor) and rarely miss the focus, where 3rd party lenses aren’tthat reliable. What’s your experience with tamron autofocus where you have to be quick to focus and capture the shot and also in low light how it’s responding? Thanks! ❤
most of your issues will come down to low light..... *most reliability of the tamrons are about 1 stop below sony GM's, so if sony's can technically go down to -3ev with the A7iv, reliability is around -2ev. Tamron is around -1ev. Cameras like the ZV-E1 or A7siii can go down to -5ev, so it gets a bit tricky depending on camera body. The tamron's have linear motors at this point and do focus quite fast. In practice, the 35-150 works well in low light, hardly ever misses, I actively use it. Sigma's are generally a notch below, and samyangs another big notch below, and even then, many are happy with the AF performance of the samyangs (I have a few of their f2.8's still and work fine in low light, but misses do show up more often).
Thanks for the clarification! I have an A7R5 and considering the T35-150 for pet and travel photography. The A7R5 has been very reliable with my Sony 40/2.5G in tracking close up subjects and general urban photography AFC. Would you say the T35-150 is suited for regular AFC tracking with animal eye AF on?
got back into photography (as a hobby) and went with the Tamron 35-150 to cut down on the number of lenses i needed. This one-lens-fits-all works really well for photographing my cats. HA!
Great video, can clearly see the appeal of the Tamron 35-150. I have the 24-70 and 70-200 combo. But if I didn't I would strongly consider the a 16-35 and 35-150 combo.
@@shearcreatif That's a nice kit for sure. I have 35mm 1.8 when I want to go lighter but always quietly wonder if I should have gone with the 1.4. Waiting on the update to Sony 85mm GM and will likely pick that up as soon as available. Also have the 100-400 and it's great but would prefer a faster 400, I can't swing for the 400 2.8, but would consider an F4 if 'reasonable."
I’ve been a prime lens shooter and definitely see the appeal in this lens. The range pairs nicely with my 14/1.8 and can be a good travel lens combo with the 20-70/4 if I want a daytime / nighttime lens without having to switch lenses all the time. I’m also waiting on the 85 GM update to see if the Sigma 85/1.4 will still hold up in optics and AF.
I like to think that I'd happily choose 35-150mm in a single lens with matching or superior optical performance to the Sony GM line and never have to switch lenses rather than getting 24-70 + 70-200 2.8 coming at much higher price, weight and lost time while switching lenses. I don't think having 150 vs 200mm is a big of a deal and 24 isn't that wide either so I'd get a 16/20mm prime or a 16-35 zoom anyway. Then again, I currently own just the Canon 70-200 2.8 IS Mark 1 adapted to the A7 IV so I can't speak from experience.
Hello, can you please tell, if it is possible to do 60p 4k video on tamron, or 120p on full HD video on tamron? You said it drops frames on high frame scenarios. This is important as i do video for weddings.
Saw this Tamron beast at a local camera store and it is beautifully built. One upside of the GM is the size but of course because it's only 24-70 and a 2.8 throughout the range. Great video! I would not be surprised if Sony updates the GM soon maybe make an OSS version?
The 2-2.8 really doesn't matter between the two. You can just set the Tamron to 2.8 and there you have it, 2.8 throughout the range as well but the benefit is f2 of you need it on the wider side.
Thank you for all that you're doing. I think your content is great and it is a gift to learn from you. You're technical skills are so good! I'm hoping in the future maybe less reference to sex and genitalia. Your content is just so good and I don't think it's necessary.
That was a great review! | would like to ask you which should i buy? Tamron 36-150 f/2 - 2,8 or should i pick sigma 24-70 f/2,8? Both are great lenses i know that but it's also both too expensive. With tamron i take advantage the low range of 35 and also the beast range of 150 but with sigma i have something more standard with 24 to 70 where i cover the low range of 24. I want it for travelling.I have the Sony A7 II. Thank you
I returned my sample it’s NOT parfocal! I shot cycling with it, 50% were unsharp.. the lens was returned to Tamron for 3 weeks and was returned as within factory limits.. When you start on 150 and zoom out, it looses a lot of frames.. and even the af points suddenly to to the corner..
yes, I mentioned that in my original review. It's only parfocal at close indoors, and "low drifting", but if you think you can get parfocal performance, especially with stills, you will run into disappointment
I do a fair amount of pet photography with a high energy beagle running to me at full speed, so parfocal and reliable AFC is pretty important. Would you say the Tmaron 35-150 will be up for the task of tracking while zooming out in bright outdoor conditions, or should I consider something more conventional like the 70-200/2.8? Thanks!
yes, sideways, but it's a snug fit and you cant fit anything else in there (hood reversed). if looking for an exact fit, the think tank digital holster 10 v2 with popdown extended will fit with hood in shooting position. *edit*
That bokeh comparison was 🔥🔥🔥👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 98.5% of the time my lens is set to its lowest aperture and there it will stay 😝 Just added this lens to my cart lol! New sub here 💯
I think Tamron is no brainer here... Because it can replace 2 zoom lenses: 24-70 (28-75) and 70-200, and it would be lighter than GM lenses, and the most important you wouldn't need to switch lenses. It is important shooting events and during trips.
yes and no. as a wedding photographer, I used the tramron for an event the other week. there were so many times where. I needed 24 to 28mm and i kept reaching for my other camera body which was a 24-70mm. As a dual shooter, using the tamron was just like having a 70-200 big lens that I didn't gravitate to
I’m considering the tampon 35-150 for travel too! The appeal of a versatile one lens fits all solution is really tempting - I can definitely see myself getting this and maybe the 20-70/4 for those wider daytime shots to avoid changing lenses in crowded/rainy conditions
The Sony 24-70mm GM is aging, still holding its weight but it needs a refresh like their impressive 70-200mm II GM. But hope this inspires them to go from 24 up to at least 105mm with f/2.8 or f/2-2.8 just like the Tamron.
@@KirkwoodImaging Yeah it'a about time, the 24-70mm GM is now nearing 7yo and lagging behind a bit for such a pricetag. Would rather have it be internal zoom if they wanna keep it at 24-70mm as I shoot a lot with rain/drizzles and 100% humidity.
I’m also considering adding a zoom to my 14/1.8 GM and 40/2.5 G combo for a travel set up. I’m expecting a few trips to APAC where it’s more humid and rainy and dusty than Europe and wonder if external zooms are a good idea or if I should just stick with primes…
@@Sparky_oto So far 2 years with Sigma's 24-70mm art and in many humid and rainy situations no problems. Primes will always be better though, and internal zooms.
@@shem44 I like the much wider 24mm which makes the Tamron too limiting. Personally I don’t care how much bokeh an extra stop gives, as at 100mm the f4 is fine, and I really don’t shoot many portraits anyway. In fact I wouldn’t trade if it was only an f5.6! Too much to give up for me.
@@WilliamAbbate I like my 24-105 but find the f4 too deep and hard to isolate the subject at wider focal length. Was considering 24-70 f2.8 but with shorter reach, it was too much to give up. This 35-150 will be a good match with my 16-35.
@@WilliamAbbate Someone can say the same thing about your 24-105 that it’s limited and not as versatile as the 35-150. Yes 24-105 is wider but the Tamron has more reach and better low light capabilities than your f/4. To each his own 🤷🏽♂️
@@fauzanjamahat1 image quality. its not a huge difference but the G Master has a cinematic look to it. it's been 6 years and that's why it's so relevant. EIther one is great though.
Does tamron render images differently from Sony? I like editing pictures in post and have a Lightroom preset for a more analog look - I’ve been able to get a somewhat consistent look across my Sony and DJI drone files, but I can always tell there is a fair amount of difference between the two company’s rendering style. Is the tamron’s rendering more of a pronounced or subtle difference?
Great test man. The Tamron is a great performer and lens range (one and done). Sony really needs to drop this overpriced lens from its line up and make a mark 2 version. Many other reviewers have noted the 24-70's softness, similar results to your results.

yes, I mentioned that in my original review. It's only parfocal at close indoors, and "low drifting", but if you think you can get parfocal performance, especially with stills, you will run into disappointment
@@CharlieVN wait it is not parfocal? what about frame drops? someody said it loses frames on 60p and 120 p on a7IV
@@ashmaterial He meant some frame drops while photographing, not taking video! It's not going to drop any frames while filming.
Thanks!
Great review! I hope Tamron make a canon RF version of this lens.
Great review. I like Tamron's warmer colors.
Are you saying that the camera with Tamron 35-150 DOES fit in the Peak Design 3L bag? Thanks!
yes, sideways, but it's a snug fit and you cant fit anything else in there (hood reversed). if looking for an exact fit, the think tank digital holster 10 v2 with popdown extended will fit with hood in shooting position. *edit*
Great Review, thanks!
That bokeh comparison was 🔥🔥🔥👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 98.5% of the time my lens is set to its lowest aperture and there it will stay 😝 Just added this lens to my cart lol! New sub here 💯
Thanks for sharing, the tamron is certainly a monster of a lens and the range is pretty crazy, good times we are living in.
@@CharlieVN 🙌🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽
Looks like Manhattan beach! Great review!
It was! thanks for watching
The appeal of a versatile one lens fits all solution is really tempting - I can definitely see myself getting this and maybe the 20-70/4 for those wider daytime shots to avoid changing lenses in crowded/rainy conditions
the sony 24-70 version 1 or 2? Thanks
What's the ballhead that you are using?
arca p0 I reviewed here: ruclips.net/video/hcAoH-3odwM/видео.html
I have this Tamron its is really good, it changes the paradigm from the holy trinity to the dynamic duo with a 16-35
Yea and you can pair then with a tamron 150-500, that’s 300mm more reach!
Thanks!
Your cold jokes are really cool😂
thank, appreciate that a real person has watched my videos 😅
of course you could be a bot and I could be chatting with AI
Man… thinking about trade my Sony 90mm 2.8 to Tamron….. start saving money now
The Sony 24-70mm GM is aging, still holding its weight but it needs a refresh like their impressive 70-200mm II GM. But hope this inspires them to go from 24 up to at least 105mm with f/2.8 or f/2-2.8 just like the Tamron.
Supposedly one coming soon… Can’t wait.
16-35GM + T35-150
My third leg 😂
If I start from scratch then very easy Tamron,.
Sony owns a Tamron or a large portion of the company so the lens sinked right up to my camera
I got the Tamron and let my iPhone take care of the wide angle.
Why is every reviewer ignoring the warped bokeh cirkles or rather bananas at high levels of zoom(tele). Looks really disturbing.
WHY! god please WHY!!
I’ll keep my more versatile 24-105.
I'm using 24-105 too and will be getting the tamron. f2 is in a different league from f4.
To each his own 🤷🏽♂️
I shot a wedding with two videographers. One had the G master one had the tamron. you couldn' t so much of a difference. But overall the G master wins
May I know in what criteria did the G master win in your case?
Totally agree, thanks for watching
GM is a very old lens now.
yep, just going by poll results
the tamron constantly fixes the sony sterile color science
those asian jokes lool
