@@fearghost4817, yeah. You’re not alone in pain.
This movie captures the feeling of loneliness and being emotionally numb perfectly

I fully agree with you. I keep getting this on my recommended page. I've watched it 4 times now on different occasions. In a way it has a calming effect this video.
@@pietergroenendijk8416 same bro... I keep coming back to this vid. The aesthetics, music, and story are just beautifully INTERLINKED.
It is also a perfect example of cyberpunk aesthetic.
real
I don't understand why this movie flopped, a sequel of a cult classic, very well recieved, great story, great cinematography, great characters and acting, the setting is amazing, music and sound design are so powerful and beautiful just amazing movie overall.
Yes agreed.
Perhaps maybe not enough of the general public had seen the first one, so I imagine this would've been very confusing for them?
To a casual movie/TV show watcher they probably felt like the episodes had no direction. They felt aimless.
Bad marketing.
People are uncultured
Honestly, it wasn't that good. I liked it, but comparing it to the original it just didn't measure up. The story was very choppy, it didn't flow like the original. I know, I know, you cannot compare the two but alas I can. We all have our own opinions. I found K's character to be frankly just to boring and without enough appeal.
I think the "You look lonely" scene is one of the best scenes in recent movie history. JOI was the only "person" to show K love and respect through the whole movie. Yet after K's device for JOI is destroyed he realizes at this scene that she wasn't doing it for him, that what she was programmed to do. K realizes this and I think the only emotion he shows is pure defeat/sadness. Truly a touching scene.
🧡
I think it also shows how she's a tragic character. She so desperately wanted to be a "real" person and experience "real" things, to the point that she begged him to basically make her mortal to make her existence feel more "real". Only for this scene to happen and K to realize that, at the end of the day, that desire was probably preprogrammed into her in the first place. He realizes her death was pointless. And yet, this JOI still isn't the same "person" that he knew, so he still can't get her back.
She died to prove that her existence had meaning, only for us to learn that her choices were likely never entirely her own to begin with.
(Also, it still motivates him to go do what he thinks is right, even though he realized he was never "special" and his motivations were also "programmed" into him to begin with. He decides to prove to himself that he's "real", even if it ultimately might not matter. )
@@HeyLeFay Very interesting comment, I like the message of this movie, I think it's positive
kinds reminds me of something I am going through right now. although I have friends I still feel lonely and empty inside and there's this person in my life who gives me the feeling of comfort but I feel that she is only being nice to me because she has to (it is her job to be nice and respectful towards me). it is a pretty scary and sad thought to think that she may not think much of me or even hate me but simply puts up with me because she is paid to do so.
She was also programmed to not partake in illicit activities i believe, yet she did, thats why i believe in the end she was sentient
Putting joi's "I love you" before the beat drop is simple but so fucking effective. This edit is soo good, it gives me chills.

@@JPF123 right click the video and click loop lol
It hurts more if you watched the movie and that... particular scene
Although heartbreaking the “you look lonely” scene was, it was so fascinating to me how his JOI’s last words were “I love you” Maybe there’s a chance that the company designed JOI to “show affection” to the customer until the very end, but that felt so natural to me. It didn’t “feel” like that. And this movie made me “feel” ways that I rarely do when watching other movies.
I cried when Luv killed Joi, enough about my experience XD
💔
I was thinking the same about the feeling a movie part. Cinema these days (95% at least) is totally crap. But THIS, this is true cinema.
yeah, if you can be fooled by acting, you can be fooled by future programing
I guess the question is; how real was it for JOI? Was she just a machine that mimicked emotion the way a sociopath does? Or was she designed to actually feel love? In my opinion, since this is Bladerunner, the pain and love in her final moments was no different from the pain and love a human would feel, or what a replicant would feel. But it raises a fascinating question about programmed emotions. Is love made lesser if your "brain" is hijacked to feel it?
I'm so proud to say I saw this masterpiece in theater.
❤️
We all have a bit of Officer K in us.
true!💔
He‘s literally me
@@set1227 Same here
The character of JOI is, for me personally, one of the most fascinating characters in recent cinema. There is SO much nuance and depth to her character, if you consider the context of the world she exists in. First off, her name. JOI, which I'm pretty sure is a play on the porn term J.O.I. (Jerk Off Interactive). Which makes sense, given what she is, a virtual girlfriend to help people satisfy their needs for sexual gratification, and intimacy/companionship. Over the course of the film, she will frequently engage with K in ways that are trying to push him to be outgoing. We're introduced to her, and K mentions how he just bought the upgrade to let him take her out with him, remotely into the world. You could easily see it as a girlfriend regularly asking him to buy her that pretty new thing she always wanted. This does 2 things. 1. It's more money for the company, because it's an Upsell to their initial product, but more importantly I think, is 2. It subtly pushes the buyer to stop staying sealed up in their room, and get out, and mingle with other living beings. While out, K interacts with several callgirls, and JOI makes note of one that K seemed to actually fancy, and show genuine interest in. And she then, of her own initiative, hires that call girl, to "take their relationship to the next level." She uses her as the actual body for K to have sex with her (in what, I think, is actually a really beautiful and touching moment), but again, it's an example of the JOI device, pushing K to have more real human interaction. And we see that this works, because later on, K, when talking to the various replicants in the underground, SHE'S the one that he most directly connects with. She's the one that uses empathy, and their shared relationship, to help convince him to help their cause. One could argue they were using it against him, but I don't think that's the case. That replicant, just like all of them, know how K feels in the world, They ALL feel it, that's what they are trying to fight against.
Now, if you've read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, one of the story elements is this sort of, virtual reality TV show thingy, that pretty much all of humanity tunes into regularly, to watch this guy, keep trying to climb a hill. They all sort of feel his struggle, and draw comfort, encouragement from his struggles. It's later revealed that it's all a show, and not some real struggle, but when confronted about this, the actor/creators basically say they use it as a form of Empathy Therapy for all of the survivors on earth, who are living through a nuclear holocaust. To me, JOI feels like the social networking equivalent of that. She's this fabricated thing, that serves a function in the society, to try and help people maintain empathy, and human interaction, so they don't all wither away in isolated apartments. But given the level of AI tech their world has, it's entirely feasible that on top of that, she is ALSO a fully sentient being, who does genuinely love whatever person she imprints to upon purchase.
Her character was utterly amazing, and endlessly fascinating for me personally, and the actress who played her did a spectacular performance.
omg you described it so well that i got additional information and deeper clarity Thanks for that
She doesn't exist. She's not a character. She's not sentient. She's a chat bot. She has no feelings. She's just really good at taking prompts and queues from her owner. She creates the illusion of love by acting how we'd want our lover to act like. But as the prostitute says there isn't anything inside her.
@@isaacbenmoussa4454 That was my personal take on the character.
@@celebrim1 1. She does exist. 2. She is a character. 3/4. Not sure if she has feelings or not, but you seem to imply that because she's artificial, she has no true feelings. Which is a weird stance in a movie reality that literally includes artificial people. And the idea that they do or do not have sentience, has been the entire crux of 2 films worth of storytelling.
5. Does she create the illusion of love? I don't know, that's kind of one of the points of the story. Is she just a fake, or is it real feelings? The fact that she starts as a factory issued item, doesn't exclude the idea that she might grow and evolve, and become a true person. Because again, this entire franchise of Blade Runner, is built on the idea of artificial people, and whether or not they're real. So if we're fine with allowing the Replicants to be "real", what says that JOI isn't also like that? Time and time again in the movies, the idea that these artificial people grow beyond their limitations of creation, is a recurring plot element.
6. The fact that she's intangible, doesn't mean she has "nothing inside her."
Now it could be that she is indeed, just a hollow shell, but the film doesn't take a stance on that either way. In fact, it pushes really hard that she is possibly a real being (to some degree at least), up until the very last moment of her existence. As she's being crushed, her last thought is to tell K she loves him. Ok, so if she's just a chat bot, what purpose does that serve? That just makes her loss even more painful for him. It makes MORE sense, if she actually had some level of sentience, and was trying to express genuine feelings for him. I could be wrong, I fully admit that, because again, the film never comes down definitively either way. But in a scifi setting with interstellar travel, arcologies, and artificial people, I don't think it's that big of a stretch to assume that their version of Alexa/Siri, is advanced enough, just with standard, factory level programming, to actually be Intelligent.
@@happyninja42 She's a chat bot. She's entirely a projection of Joe's wants onto a blank and empty canvas. She says and does only what she thinks Joe wants at that moment. There are all sorts of hints in the movie that she's barely more than a figment of his imagination. For example, when she's interacting with him, she never really remembers moment to moment what she is dressed like, what she is feeling, or what she is doing. Each interaction is almost stand alone, with her clothing and feelings changing in response to what Joe says. She is a hollow shell. She's a Chinese Room that never knows what it is saying.
It goes the other way as well. When Joe wants to give her a present he pretends to himself it's an anniversary gift. Joi doesn't say, "But it's not our anniversary", because she's empty. She says instead, "Is it our anniversary?", asking like a chat bot for cues. Joe says back, "No, but let's say that it is." The relationship is fictional right from the start we are introduced to it, but we as humans want to project human motivation onto what we see.
Within the story, she is the embodiment of Joe's inability to form real connections with people. He's essentially emotionally masterbating with a chat bot because emotional connections with anyone real would threaten to instill in him the recognition that they are real.
The movie cleverly toys with your perception of Joi asking the audience to want to believe as Joe believes that she is real and that they have a real relationship. But the movie is the whole time warning the audience that Joi only says what you want to hear, something no truly intelligent being ever does. And so Joi 'dies heroically and as her last act tells K she loves him' because K wants to hear and believe that. He wants the loss to be painful because it serves to further his belief that she was real and she really loved him. Because if your lover is going to die, what you want to here is that your lover loved you with all their being. It's all cliches and simple statements like a chatbot would tell you.
The whole movie is about the illusions that Joe lives in and how he grows out of them to find something more real and in the process becomes human himself. Joi is one of the illusions he lives in. She is a part of his inhumanity.
Now could the movie go on to suggest that Joi is something more than an empty shell? Sure. But it never moves in that direction. And all the things that the both movies suggests are human fundamentally are human. The androids of Blade Runner aren't machines, but very slightly genetically modified humans. They aren't "electric sheep". They are flesh and blood. The question both movies ask is basically do they have a soul. That's why K struggles when he is asked to kill something "that has been born", because he reasons, "If it has been born, it has a soul".

The character of JOI is an extension of the “what makes a person human” debate. One scene I find interesting is when the replicant with the pink hair looks down on JOI like humans look down on the replicants. The scene where JOI asks her to leave the apartment.
💔
They're kind of the opposite of Replicants. The latter was programmed specifically not to feel emotion. The former however was programmed to feel them but in a very constrained way. They *have* to love their client. I think they can develop their own independence and emotional maturity the same way replicants can, but even if they couldn't does it really matter?
Is love lesser because your brain was hijacked to feel it? To the individual, it would feel the same.
@@colosgunter2610 most people seem unaware that romantic love is their reproductive biology hijacking an otherwise asexual and non-gendered biological computer to accomplish a task
we add our own color to the stark and defined lines of our programming

but sentience means you’re able to add color and feel the beauty and pain of the world
My girlfriend of 2 years left me about 3 months ago. Just now I got the courage to rewatch this masterpiece of a film. As expected it hits different. The first time I saw it I didn't pay much attention to K's and Joi's romance because I couldn't relate. Now I see it totally different, as she (my ex) is becoming a distant memory, like she wasn't real in the first place (like Joi). The "Hello handsome" scene broke me down, because K realised that she wasn't ever truly his, or even unique, she became just another girl. "Literally me" can't describe my feelings more accurately.

This movie is just a masterpiece. Loved it. And this edit is just perfect.
Even K is meaningless considering everything about him isn’t real, even his memory, yet he decided in the end to go against what he was designed to do. In the end he died for nothing, not even someone that meant anything to him. Even Dekkard has no idea why he’s doing what he’s doing. So the hero of this movie meant nothing not even the to villains of the movie who just viewed him as the agent in charge of the case. I think the moment she noticed the JOI he had she knew he was something more of just a machine and if you notice she didn’t say thank you for using our product towards K but towards JOI. To me that meant JOI was viewed more of a real product and the villain thought she was doing the work.

K wanted to be unique, something special he reveled in this fact that there might be actually hope for him somewhere and his hopes crumble one by one... thats the moment i liked this movie
❤️
It could have been. It's very difficult to say because we'd have to investigate everyone's experience with their JOI to understand if the experience is unique. It could be that each of the JOI units are customized to the individual at hand. Also there's indications she's beyond just a loyal program for example she hired that woman that "Joe" likes, plus "Joe" never corrected his name, he kept it as Joe in the end. JOI also seems to wonder around and takes in the world around her. Perhaps just as a idle thread like the Word's eye glasses that starts doing things when you leave it alone for a little while. It would also be interesting to see how the JOI unit reacts to individuals of the extreme end. For example, a manically depressed person who is suicidal or homicidal would JOI in effect call for help or would she try to encourage his behavior? Or even on the opposite end someone who is very happy to have JOI and perhaps tries everything he could to be with her, would JOI in effect see this as a self-harming behavior and attempt to help? We see indications of this especially the scene where JOI calls the girl that she knows K likes and decides to have someone "real" around him instead of herself. It seems like the JOI unit is ultimately to make the person more outgoing by being more caring of the person and encouraging positive behaviors such as going out and meeting "real" women instead of staying in a house with her all day. The odd part is that K's entire quest for learning about himself stems from JOI who was encouraging and aiding him in finding himself. When he questioned his memory, JOI made the suggestion to go visit the person who creates them thus opening the door to find his true self. The question is would JOI do this for everyone else as well?

I love Blade Runner 2049 because it wrecks the first movie.
I watched blade runner and the hopeful and positive vibe destroyed the movie for me. 2049 is a film that presents a cruel world, where the dream is a commodity to be sold and hope an illusion.
The scene where he discovers that he is just another joe, and that his love was nothing real is one of the most memorable in cinema.
thank you for this wonderful cut.
🖤
I mean the first movie also shows a cruel world. Replicants were used as disposable soldiers, they have no rights, the world is classic Cyberpunk, etc. 2049 is also hopeful since K actually got what he wanted: Meaning. It doesn't matter if he died or not, he still felt like he had a purpose.
color grading of this movie is on another level 🔥
💛
Beautifully done. This made me want to watch both Bladerunner movies.
🤍
Can i just say i love the sound of rain in background at the start of video, its all silent, only thing you hear is song and rain.
💙
This édit is something else
It bring me back right in the movie feelings
🤗💜
This is one of the best movies ever. I need to watch this again tomorrow
❤️
I'd be badass if they made movie trailers like this!
😍💗
Agreed. This video made me want to watch the movie when the actual trailers did not.
@@theodoreburns1330 i was about to say that 🥂
Dido has that effect lol. Great movie
it wouldn't sell because you need to watch the movie to understand the emotions behind it
This is such a great edit. Thank you for this.
Glad you liked it!❤️
This edit made me watch the movie, and I don't regret it a bit. A very realistic depiction of what a dystopian future could hold for society. Let's hope we don't actually ever get there, although, one can only hope...
🧡
We're definitely heading towards a dystopian society. Just not the cool kind, like eating noodle soup in the rain at Chinatown cool.
@@qvindicator Exactly, that's what I meant when I said "Let's hope we don't actually ever get there"
Saw this at 30k views and come back to see it has half a million. Getting the respect it deserves. Great video.
Thank you ma man🤍

Praying for you. Keep going
One of the best sequels in my opinion
🖤
Best blade runnder 2049 edit I've ever seen.
💗
This movie had a tremendous potential
❤️
wdym? what didn't you like about it? i found the ending perfect and so fitting
@@dramaticvirghoe I think they mean that, despite being so amazing, it didn't do well at the box office.
This edit is so good, it could be used as the official trailer!
And of course the movie was work of art too.
🤍
I literally come back to this video every day since its on my recommendation, it's just so calming
glad you enjoying it🧡
This movie was ahead of its time.
🧡
Funny isn't it? This was supposed to be the era of connection provided by technology, and yet, so many of us are here, unconnected and alone.
This movie is masterful! The music, the cinematography, the script, the characters, the settling, I was floored by it all!
agreed!!💗
this movie does in fact suck. It's just ripped off plot structuring and concepts from better movies. The AI girlfriend was straight taken beat for beat from Her (2013), Gosling stoically walking around in a cool jacket --> Drive (2011). Every character is either all black or all white. Noirs are supposed to feature gray characters like the original, this was quite literally like Jurassic World was to Jurassic Park, a dumbed down version almost like it was meant for kids.
@@codywirth8190 "Straight taken from Her"? Stop it.
@@Jay-eb7ik
Yes it did. How tf can you deny this?
@@codywirth8190 Bruh, its not a novel idea. Its not like the movie Her had this original idea. I can name a dozen movies and even more books that explored AI lovers. Idk, maybe Denis Villeneuve was inspired by Her? But I doubt it.
For some reason this video is very important to me.
Glade you like it❤️
This is the best edit i've ever seen. Im alone and im here again. What a fucking life...
stay strong ma man!🤍
@@GeekyDude_yt I started to overcome the pain of breakup... i hope i will. thanks man.

Work of art...
Yes this video actually compelled me to watch the movie as well. I got to say the whole JOI story was interesting. The part where she jumped down to say I love you was definitely the best part but also at the end of the movie it makes you question if everyone’s experience with JOI was the same as K’s.
Interesting!❤️
I admit to not seeing every film going, but for me this is easily the greatest film of the past decade.
I'd even go as far as to say I think it's even better than the original. Shame that another film is unlikely as this one is a work of genius.
💜
great work! this sure needs more views
Thank you🧡🥺
This is such a great edit, made me finally watch the movie.
💙
I’m glad so many people love this movie as much as I do
🖤
The relationship between these 2 is so damn good.
Just want to say thank you. This video and others like it really pushed me to watch movie and I feel like I enjoyed it a lot more because of this one. What a ride.
You're very welcome!💜

This video is possibly my favorite on all of RUclips. Really emphasizes Villeneuve's unique talent for building captivating sci-fi universes. I really hope he's in charge of the next one.
