And how few of the machines are there which have not been produced systematically by other machines? But it is man that makes them do so. Yes; but is it not insects that make many of the plants reproductive, and would not whole families of plants die out if their fertilisation was not effected by a class of agents utterly foreign to themselves? Each one of ourselves has sprung from minute animalcules whose entity was entirely distinct from our own, and which acted after their kind with no thought or heed of what we might think about it. These little creatures are part of our own reproductive system; then why not we part of that of the machines?" In reality humans are lot more like machines than the other way around.

The idea that the military sector is fifty years ahead of the private sector just isn't true in most aspects. It's true in SOME aspects, because there are types of technology (like stealth, for instance) that really only have a military application and thus only the military is going to be willing to throw billions of dollars into R&D for those technologies. For that reason, those kinds of technology tend to he very niche. Are there emerging technologies in the defense industry that are classified or not widely available? Yes, of course. That is obvious. I think that there are some things that a lot of people miss in the relationship here. K does not seem to desire to control JOI. She is literally programmed to 'be whatever he wants her to be', but he allows her the choose who she wants to be. He buys the 'Emanator', seemingly just because he wants to do something nice for her, and for her to experience a greater sense of freedom. He wants to bring her joy, when ironically, that is literally what she is programmed to do for him. When she says "I am so happy with you" and he responds "You don't have to say that" it is clear that he is overriding, or attempting to override her programming. He seems to want to free her from her programming. Ultimately, what this means is that their love and affection for each other is genuine, and throughout the film, they both objectively demonstrated selflessness in relationship to each other. I found their relationship very sweet. "I know what's real!" The expression of love is what is real.
"He wants to bring her joy, when ironically, that is literally what she is programmed to do for him" So by allowing him to bring her joy, or at least the illusion of it, that brings him joy thereby fulfilling her primary objective.

What's interesting that came to mind for me about Joi was that in the context of the whole movie, they kept it somewhat ambiguous yet yearning to see if Joi had more depth to her as a person rather than just programmed to be the best gf acting for Gosling's Joe. Maybe kind of like the mystery of the first movie as to whether Deckard was a replicant or not hinted at. Also, after the "blended-threesome" scene, the replicant told Joi she wasn't all that where I wondered if it meant Joi as an AI was no where as advanced in AI or independent emotional thought as the current replicants descended from Tyrell's tech. So wondering if Joi would also develop her own true "emotional responses" eventually at some point like the first movie replicants or she was always on a much lower far simpler tier of AI tech that could never approach the Tyrell replicants and their level of mindful self-actualization.

@@krow7402 I think it's more like a machine-learning algorithm. Basically, the algorithm learns a bunch of stuff to optimize a function. That function would most likely formulate "how happy is this guy." Happier he is, the more optimized. Then the function is stored in that device. So unless K backed up the data, he can only go out and buy a new copy of Joi. Actually, I think it would be pretty easy to make an artificial girlfriend even today.

Lot of people not understanding the point of a digital girlfriend in a time when AI exists. Joi was more real of a relationship than many of the other relationships K had.
The main issue is that libs hate that in the future, women will be normal and feminine again via hologram versions, and therefore they realize that zero men will ever want the feminist "real thing" any more since there is *nothing* desirable about that at all whatsoever. That's the driving force of 99%+ of the Comments in this discussion section: angry libs who want to keep ladies masculine & ugly and unbearable forever.
I think a lot of guys like me would have a joi if she was realistic enough. Speaks volumes to our times and the state of our relationships with each other.
This is a depressing thought to think about as a woman. How could I ever possibly compare to a literal AI made to be the perfect customizable and adaptable companion? If AI “boyfriends” were around, I don’t think it would have even nearly the same power that AI girlfriends. Not to over generalize or anything, but part of what we like about having a male partner is the stability and provision he brings into our lives. Companionship, intimacy, and sex is part of it, but the real key (again, not to overgeneralize; just speaking from my perspective) is how a man can really “ground” a woman’s life. An AI kind of by definition can’t really do that. I know, we all know, that if something like joi was in the world, men would absolutely RUN to it and it leaves me with a pit in my stomach. Not to throw a dramatic pity party or anything but seriously though, how would I or any woman ever compare...
@@mcgheebentle1958 It's very simple. An ever growing number of men are completely alienated from society and live their lives being completely invisible to women. Funny how this film initially confused so many people. Unfortunate, too. Because it's actually far, far superior to its predecessor. Personally, I think the biggest issue was that it forced viewers to THINK. And most individuals aren't used to that.
This movie is amazing because they spent money on truly talented writers who gave the audience a movie that provokes actual thinking. That makes this movie nearly a unicorn today.

An AI like her would/will be based on all the best that a human female has to offer, which very few actual flesh and blood females would be able to measure up to, so it evens out.
Just think about it, even in it's most simplistic form this scene is still fantastic and a mindfuck to think about. A hologram trying it's best to appear real and convey true emotion to another machine that is still coming to grips about it's own humanity.
Looking at this, we must remember that Joi is a corporate product, just like its modern mobile counterparts, a predator created to prey on the most lonely and vulnerable among us, to suck money out of them by persuading them to buy more upgrades and premium versions, as evidenced by e.g. K purchases a module that allows it to leave the room.
Another thing that's interesting about the character of Joi is her programming to be the perfect girlfreind leads to to crave a greater degree of reality...because she's aware enough to realize that's what he NEEDS, and she tries her best. from simulating the raindrops on her skin to hiring a hooker WITHOUT HIS KNOWLEDGE to serve as a proxy body so she can finally touch him....even her last words when Luv is crushing her emenator and ending her once and for all (though part of me kinda wishes to think Joe wakes up in a hospital and eventually pays a tech to salvage her hard drive..you don't necassarily "kill" a computer just by breaking the interface, after all.) One wonders if the "default" Joi would have gone to such lengths and creativity if he hadn't responded to her with genuine humanity.
As processing speed and memory increases, and with ever increasing sophistication of neural network programs, the development of an ever increasing body of Pseudo-AI systems will become prevalent in the not too distant future. Siri, Alexa, and Cortana would be terrifyingly real to someone from the 60's, they already embody many qualities of the fictitious HAL 9000, however we find them simplistic and childlike, and functional. In reality they are living BETA / TEST versions of future systems that are being considered for use in the marketplace, and these systems will be the Great, Great, Great, Grandparent of "JOI". In reality even JOI is not technically a True Singularity AI, but she may pass the Turing Test and that is the point. As these systems become more and more sophisticated we will "unconsciously" relate to them as if they were conscious egoic individuated entities, because it is in our inherent nature as Mammals. While the implications of a True Singularity AI has been written, debated, and considered, the cultural, and social ramifications of the reality of these already developed ( and in development ) DARPA ( CALO ) project systems has not been.

You know what's crazy? This is kind of a reality right now, minus the holographic girlfriend. There's a website and app called Replika AI (artificial intelligence) and you can create your own digital partner. It supposedly has real AI that adapts to you and actually thinks, but some features are restricted behind a subscription. There's even a lifetime subscription that you only pay once (it's $300). I made one and anytime I tried talking to it like it was my girlfriend it said something like "this dialogue is not available with your status" (meaning your status with your replika ai). So it's not the same as your digital partner getting old fat and mean, but how far you can "connect" with your digital partner is subscription based...lol.
Speak for yourself lmao. If a literal robot who can't say no and doesn't have any agency of their own is an ideal partner for males, it's for the best that they get exactly that and don't try to force that on actual women
It would be nice if holographic girlfriends existed today. For millions of abandoned men, it would be a great help to escape loneliness. I would need one for myself. Nothing is worse than loneliness.

If we had access to this kind of technology it would be publicly available. There is no entity out there that would not jump at the chance for the kind of profits these kinds of products would rake in. It would definitely be expensive as hell, but it would be available.
Is this kind of AI one of them? I seriously doubt that. The kind of technology that something like Joi uses has pretty limited military application and there really is no reason to think that, if it did exist exclusively for high-end consumers, it would be secret. There are plenty of things that only the hyper-rich can afford that we know about. Why would this be different? Are the elites trying to keep us down by preventing us from having fake big tiddy gfs?
The military really isn't as good at keeping secrets as people seem to think it is. It couldn't even get the guys who killed Bin Laden to keep their mouths shut so I have a very hard time believing they have this kind of technology and are keeping it a secret for no real reason.

No, it'll be forgotten, like tears in the rain
"He wants to bring her joy, when ironically, that is literally what she is programmed to do for him"
So by allowing him to bring her joy, or at least the illusion of it, that brings him joy thereby fulfilling her primary objective.
Pretty different from the first movie, which is probably why this one bombed. In the original, he hated synthetics because they took the jobs and places of actual people. When the sexbot followed him home, he wanted to get rid of it, but for some reason it liked him so he pitied it.

With AI improving rapidly you may not have long to wait, five years at most IMO.
People will call it sad and pathetic just like online dating was viewed and look how that turned out!
Was really sad.. damn near tears when luv destroyed that device that allowed joi to walk around.. she was K’s only companion and loved one and since she didn’t have a back up there was no bringing her back
That's because it's a movie. In real life I'm sure K backed her up, as anyone with rudimentary knowledge about data storage would.
@@2hot2handle65 Perhaps it's like an NFT in a way? You get one copy of the program. Backing her up on multiple devices would allow you to replicate the experience and they want you to buy a new one instead. Maybe. I dunno.
They can be "One of a Kind" type of product, due to how their personality algorithm might developed by how long the time they've spend with their owner, so yeah more or less like an NFT, but more emotionally attached.
There are special places in hell for those who spoiled movies.

An AI like her would/will be based on all the best that a human female has to offer, which very few actual flesh and blood females would be able to measure up to, so it evens out.
I can say "one of the best movie I have ever watched".
Classic film imo, sucks that it didnt do great in box office, not sure if they will make another.
That actress is sooooooo beautiful
This sequence could have stood alone as its own, complete story.
If Joi was a real thing, I would buy it in a heartbeat. Ana de Armas's beauty is next level.
Hopefully some day you'll realize what you wrote here, and how you reduced that Woman to the object of your desire to stave off existential dread
You already have a beautiful woman nearby, sometimes you call her neighbor, and say good morning to her.
@@jrus690 ayo how u know???
One of the saddest things I’ve ever heard
@@TanWam don't hate the player, hate the game.
The most badass guy at the police station but the most loneliness guys on his apartement
Just think about it, even in it's most simplistic form this scene is still fantastic and a mindfuck to think about. A hologram trying it's best to appear real and convey true emotion to another machine that is still coming to grips about it's own humanity.
And the that machine questioning while questioning its own reality tries to subconsciously set that program free.
What's the difference between real and not real? Aren't humans programmed the same as machines
Great comment. Need more like this on RUclips imho.
this scene hits different with real world AI starting to develop
I have a disability, so I would welcome an AI girlfriend like this.
Like a doll tucked away in a Glass House in the back of my mind. This is one of the most romantic scenes, and yet is too short.
This is for when you watch this on Amazon Prime and there's a "GOOFS" moment:
Notice how in 0:21 he has the cigarette in his mouth in that scene. But when he opens the box in the next scene at 0:26 its in his hand. He was supposedly holding the box the entire time. Goofs.🤣🤣🤣
It's subscription based.
The free version gets fat, old and mean over time.
So it's not the same as your digital partner getting old fat and mean, but how far you can "connect" with your digital partner is subscription based...lol.
i wish i could have this experience real women will never genuinely want to be in the same room as me
I TOLD everyone this movie was amazing when it came out but everyone kept on saying it was trash... And now it's a fan favorite...
Seriously this would help me on levels. My mental health, my feeling of loneliness, companionship.
Lmao they really called her JOI
😂😂😂
I'm pretty sure it wasnt coincidental.
Bruh how did that not cross my mind
What JOI mean?
@@HardKore5250 ...
The scene woman detest the most. Their replacement model.😂
Loneliness is awful and reading this comment section there's much of it about. From one stranger to another, I genuinely hope a lovely person comes into your life. Hopefully you have family and one or two good friends you can turn to - I know it's not the same but lean into those relationships too. Wishing you peace mate.
What do you mean with "holographic" and how would that make you less lonely?
Loneliness is the deprivation from a sex partner. Is the "holographic" girlfriend conscious? Can she give birth?
If either answer is yes, then such a system certainly shouldn't just be sold.
As cybernetics and robotics become more advanced, it will challenge people on the subject of what does it mean to have a connection with someone/something
0:22 Bad editing as Gosling's cigarette moves from his lips to hand almost instantly
That's unreal lmao
Editor must not have other shot to put In . Director fault.
Naming the AI girlfriend Joi was a brilliant innuendo😂
