  • A constrained physical simulation of different 4-stroke engine types: 45 degree V8, 30 degree V6, inline 4, flat 4, 45 degree V-twin, inline twin, and single cylinder. Which stroke each cylinder is in is color coded by the interior volume of the cylinder.

Using an in-line crank for a V design. Two rods on one throw makes the engine much shorter.

    The strangest V8 I've seen!
It has not just a flatplane crankshaft, but each rod has individual crank pin! Wow! That's new to me.
V-twin-why does it have individual crank pins while being a 90° one?
Parallel twin here is so called 180°-type. It can also can be 360° (with pistols going up and down simultaneously) and 270° with crank pins offset by 90°, just like in your V-twin animation.

Thank you for your comments. It is interesting to know the difference between what I made and how real engines are configured. I only did some minor research for the engine configurations for this program and didn't look much into the specifics of how things are connected so probably messed up several details. Someone else pointed out once that the flaps that go down around the piston are actually meant to prevent piston slap, and that I have them rotated by 90 degrees from the correct orientation.

I'm curious: why did you go from a 650 to a 250? I'm riding an sv650s myself at the moment. The v-twin on a sportbike is kind of unique, I think.

The sv650 was having reliability issues, so I sold it and switched to my GF's bike.

+Josiah Manson makes sense, although I was more curious about why you'd limit yourself speedwise. 250's don't do 60mph+ very well.
