CARTOON EVOLUTION #24
Rugrats is the fan-favourite toon that helped solidify Nickelodeon as a leader in the animation industry. Spawned in the early 1990s, as one of the very first Nicktoons, the series and characters continue as one of the most iconic and lucrative cartoon franchises of all time - having been called “The Simpsons of children’s television!” Currently the second-longest-running Nicktoon!
In 2021, Rugrats turn 30 years old, to help them celebrate, I will trace the series evolution, from 1991 to now. To do so I will spotlight the various series iterations, touching on changes in character and animation style, and the thematic and structural shifts prevalent across 3 decades of series and films, in this edition of Cartoon Evolution.
I take a look at how the show and characters have evolved over 3 theatrical films, 5 TV and straight-to-DVD movies, 2 spin-off series, and a brand-new reboot and how Rugrats has become one of the most beloved cartoon franchises of all time - having remained a fan favorite for 30!
I discuss the most important changes in their design and personality and in the stylistic and narrative structures of their productions prevalent across 3 decades of series and movies, and discuss the evolution of such iconic characters as Tommy Pickles, Chuckie Finster, Angelica Pickles and Phil & Lil DeVille.
Here's my look at Rugrats through the years!!

"A Baby's Gotta Do, What a Baby's Gotta Do" is an Iconic and the most recognized quotes from Tommy Pickles. Rugrats went from Small to Being on one of the best well known shows ever aired on TV. The Babies were all Little Rugrats until 10 years ago they would be All Grown Up! As Pre-Teens and then being Rugrats again after the Reboot has arrived. This Evolution Video truely does bring memories to me and other fellow people who grew up watching the show, the 3 Movies and their Spin-Off's.
oh cool didnt know stu had a youtube channel
Every rugrats video I see: *stu pickles* it’s like ur haunting me
@ :0
lol
I bet everyone can agree that the reboot was more terrible then preschool days.
All it is, is a 3d version of Rugrats, which one of the reason it was a big success was because of the animation style.
I feel really bad for those who worked on Preschool Daze. They aimed for 13 episodes, only made 4, the 4 that were made weren't accessible to the public for 5/6 years, and when they finally made it to television, it got absolutely unnoticed.
Though, I very much agree that greenlighting All Grown Up for a full series was the right way to go.
Jeez, It's been 30 years and the rugrats are still babys.
You forgot the important part... ALL GROWN UP!
They're supposed to be adults now in their 30s after continuing from the teenage version All Grown Up.
Naw they done gone and deaged back to baby's from teens through cathulu
26:25 My favorite Rugrats shot of all time where Tommy and Spike Are looking up at the Moon
Gorgeous shot!! Couldn’t _not_ use it!
Before _SpongeBob,_ before _Hey Arnold,_ before _Avatar: The Last Airbender,_ before _The Loud House,_ and before _The Fairly Odd Parents,_ it was Rugrats.
Rugrats was without a doubt one of my favorite Nickelodeon animated shows I grew up with during the 1990's and early 2000's from it's cast of characters, unique stories and the power of the babies imagination when doing these adventures their was so much to love from this show.
My favorite Rugrats characters were Tommy as he is persistent and the leader of the group of Babies especially saying one of his catchphrases: _"A Babies gotta do what a baby's gotta do.",_ Chuckie Finster the timid but kind member of the Babies and I just love his evolution he had with Tommy, his father and what he's been through, Susie Carmichael cause she's kind, generous and always stood up for the babies against Angelica and the first POC character (African American) in a Nickelodeon animated series, and I also enjoy Stu Pickles and especially the grandfather when they were around in several different episodes.
Looking forward to the voice evolution of Rugrats and which of the babies you will wound up covering this month.
He probably won't do voice evolutions.
@@evy9439 He did do voice evolutions on the 6 main SpongeBob characters (SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, Mr. Krabs, Sandy and Plankton), so it's likely he would just do a voice evolution on just the main cast of babies (e.g. Tommy, Chuckie, etc.) that were from the earlier seasons but not the ones that were included later in the show's run (e.g. Dil, Kimi).
If not, then I'll be excited for just the Cartoon Evolution of the Rugrats.
He said so in a reply to someone asking.
@Norman the California Boy Yes, really.
Go to his video announcing this, and someone there asked about voice evolutions.
@Norman the California Boy yeah
My favorite characters in the whole show are Angelica and Chuckie.

The show's 30th Anniversary is on August 11th
Yeah despite what trami says, thanks for the info
That’s also when paramount+ launches here in Australia. I’m so excited for it!
Along with Doug and Ren and Stimpy.
Yeay on my birthday! ❤
Really? that also happens to be my birthday
you know I'm very surprised that spongebob hasn't gotten on the Hollywood wall of fame. at least not yet anyway lol
Foghorn Leghorm is turning 75 this year. That could be cool to talk about, though I'm not trying to force anything on you Dave. I just think it's funny since the LT post you made months ago had him on there with Taz, Speedy, Lola and Elmer. And it so happened he is turning 75.
Keep up the great work Dave!
The initial first 65 episode run will always my personal favorite era of the series. I also adore the 2nd movie Rugrats In Paris to nostalgic & sentiment bits.
Thanks for this. Rugrats were a big part of my early childhood, and I do remember it felt like they kinda just disappeared from TV (I remember in the 2000s, new episodes for a few of Nickelodeon's classic shows were so sporadic before they ended altogether) which is a shame given how huge they once were. I also remember hearing about Pre-School Daze while it was still in development and wondered whatever happened to it. Still gotta check the reboot out. Great video!!
Thanks Nick!
Same here man, I was sure the show disappeared off the air - only to find it just kept running and running for years. Absolutely crazy how long it went, taking in consideration all the spin-offs!
Rugrats was my childhood and it is celebrating 30th anniversary this year.
While I certainly preferred the wackier, denser cartoons like Ren and Stimpy and Rocko, and it isn't even my favorite of the Klasky Csupo Nicktoons (that'd be AAAAH! Real Monsters), I do appreciate Rugrats for what it was and what it accomplished. I have to say, sure animation techniques and mediums are constantly shifting to digital and CGI, I really think that grungy, sketchy, muted color pallet was the best look for the series. I wish they managed to keep that in the digitally produced episodes, giving the babies' imagination spots a brighter color pallet, with a more brown and dusty look for reality.
Nickelodeon: let’s make animated series that doesn’t revolve around merchandise.
Also Nickelodeon: merchandises rugrats to the core.
can we talk about how they run their shows into the dang on ground
@@lisaswayne8241 yes.
I just hope they bring Kimi and her mom Kira back. Because Kimi was my favorite character in the series. And she and her mom brought Asian representation to others throughout the rest of the show.
So please don’t cancel them out. 🙏💞
Me: OMG Rugrats is turning 30? That's old!
Also me: Turned 30 last month.
😐 😐 😐
😬 you and I both
@@DaveLeeDownUnder We both need a reboot then! 😂
Good to see all these perfect bebies being used again.
Also, Kira and Kimi included in the show with Chaz and Kira’s wholesome relationship or we riot.
If they still don't happen to include them whether the next few seasons. We will raid their studio just like how the Area 51 was planned to do. Crazy since I remember that they wanted to run towards a High Secret Government Restricted Place.
Before you people try to go against me with this idea, first of all It's a Joke.
I really wish they’d bring All Grown Up back. It was from my time, and I grew up with it and loved it
Klasky Cssupo had one of the strangest closing credits bumpers but I freaking loved it haha
For me, I prefer All Grown Up (cause it’s aimed more towards me), and my favorite character from there is Lil
My fav character is phil
I prefer All Grown Up too.
With that stated, how about the Evolution of Mr Magoo?
@@Rgoid I’ve never heard of Mr. Magoo
So do I, Sam! And while everybody outside of the AGU Community is always praising the reboot, treating it like it was a gift from the gods, and comparing the animation to Jimmy Neutron, you already know what I've been wanting from the original series, and it never happened! Not only that, but they changed almost everything, just like they changed everything for Blue's Clues, DuckTales, Muppet Babies, The Powerpuff Girls, and Teen Titans! I know this sounds mean to everyone else who's not in the community, but this reboot really upsets me!
me too grew up on that era and was aim for me too.
All Grown up is my absolute favourite and really shows me just how their lives all have turned out and will continue to turn out. Just something I need to rewatch
I loved Rugrats growing up. It was such a good show. I fell off when All Grown up came out but I liked the idea of them getting older as I got older. I think it would be pretty cool if they continued the time line and did a version where they end up becoming parents themselves. Or just do what the Simpsons have done. An episode that peaks into the future of their lives.
Great video Dave!
Thanks, James!
I loved Rugrats a kid. I used to play with a friend of mine to be Tommy and Chuckie and have adventures of our own.
The Mother's Day episode and "Rugrats in Paris" still makes me cry!
Gonna wait for All Grown Up reboot even though the chances are slim, a certain episode was a cliffhanger
I'm a big fan of Rugrats and I loved Rugrats in Paris because I loved seeing Chuckie as the leader.
Thanks for covering one of my favorite cartoons of all time. Loving the cute adventures of the babies and their silly families. Keeping my fingers crossed to see a European release of the original series someday.
Ya know what's creepy? The Nicktoons Logo looks like a blood splat! 😳
Dave I just wanted to comment that you really do the best long form retrospectives on cartoons on RUclips. Whenever I have a random inkling to look into the history of a show I’m currently watching your videos always do the job. Good work man.
I literally grew up with the rugrats. I'm 30
I was today years old when I learned how to properly pronounce “Csupo.” Of course, I was still using my second grade reading decoding skills when I first saw their logo in 1991!
I find it funny how Rugrats got a Star on the Walk of Fame but Spongebob hasn't had one yet
U BETTER BE LYIN
I'm gonna be honest. Out all of the classic Nickelodeon shows, Rugrats is definitely my favorite not only because it's funny and features cute cartoon babies, but also because it has as much to offer adults as much as kids and it also has great emotional moments.
The reboot is how you fix a long-running show's floating timeline problem that would create plotholes (*coughSimpsonscough*). Just hit the restart button and have it take place in an alternative timeline.
I’ve had this video in my Watch Later playlist for over two years… I guess this qualifies as later! Anyway, great video as always Dave! The original show was a big part of my childhood (along with quite a few other classic Nicktoons), so this was a really interesting history lesson and breakdown of the franchise. I can still hear that Klasky-Csupo logo bumper!
I appreciate the effort u put into these kind of videos.
Thank you!
Rugrats is my second favorite nickelodeon show along with SpongeBob and The Loud House
I love the original series, All Grown Up, the 2021 reboot ,and all three movies
Chuckie was my favorite character when I was a kid.
I love Rugrats, but cried when "All Grown Up" came on because it was an end of an era for me. I still watched All Grown Up.
Even though I`ve never seen *almost* any of the show, and had only seen a Christmas special when I was young, I gotta say being here now seeing the RUGRATS as they grew up surprisingly is kind of astounding to me.
This video was such a nice trip back to my childhood! Thank you Dave!
Pleasure! Glad you enjoyed - thanks for watching!
Happy 30th anniversary, Doug, Ren & Stimpy and Rugrats!
I remembered something interesting about Chuckie and Angelica. Chuckie was supposed to be the bully and Angelica (like Helga from Hey Arnold) was based on a girl that bullied Paul Germain because the girl had a crush on him.
Is there any possible chance that at some point in time, you could do an Ed Edd n Eddy evolution? Yes, the franchise was rather short-lived, but the characters' designs have gradually changed over the course of the series. If you have other plans in mind for the rest of 2021, then you can stick to those, but I'd like to know if you'd eventually do it.
The new series finally had some of that darkness back.
FUN FACT: CHRISTMAS IN TATTERTOWN WAS GOING TO BE A TV SHOW BEFORE THE CONTROVERSY WITH THE NEW ADVENTURES OF MIGHTY MOUSE.

Lol maybe just enjoy the new video before requesting more. It’s so deflating spending a month on a video, only to have people instantly send in demands for more without even commenting on the video at hand.
@@DaveLeeDownUnder I wish I had something to say, but I didn't grow up with Rugrats.
It ended in 2004, and I wasn't even alive. My country's Nickelodeon didn't have reruns for it either.
It’s ok, I appreciate you tuning in anyway. I’m more specifically talking about the OP who dropped in just to suggest more videos / work.
Informative as always, Dave! Great job on this video!
Thanks, Tiffany!
@@DaveLeeDownUnder Wow, Dave. This video came out fast.. How'd you do it?
Not gonna lie the CGI characters kinda freak me out
I actually really liked _All Grown Up_ and never really got into _Rugrats_ proper. I enjoyed the continuation of the characters' lives and watching them mature.
My favorite Rugrats Characters are Tommy, Dil, Grandpa Lu and Spike!
Great job with this one Dave.
Chuckie is my favorite and has been for a long time but I think Phil is coming up at 2nd. After is Spike, Lou, Stu and Drew!
Love Reptar as well! Great job on thos video covering the adults when you did and of course the babies and toddlers themselves!
The OG Rugrats Universe is huge and had a lot to offer even though Nickelodeon didnt expect it at first.
A RUclipsr gotta do what a RUclipsr gotta do!
Rugrats is still a classic cartoon to this day!
60% of my Nickelodeon/Nicktoons collection is related to The Rugrats!
This was my childhood! I had their toys as a kid!
Hola yo soy tu gran fan me gustan todas tus videos

It was a pretty solid franchise overall, actually.
Didn't really watch Rugrats as a kid but heard of it I was more into animaniacs
Funny I was the other way around. I had no idea until animaniacs existed just before the reboot came out. But I’m a huge fan of looney tunes. I’ve seen parody clips of animaniacs and I love what they did for Rugrats, lion king and friends. Popular culture in the 90s.
I rewatched the first 5 episodes of the new show over 27 times now.... I have been waiting for this for like over 10 years.
I’ve only rewatched them twice personally but I’m more excited for new episodes already! Where are they? Move out kamp koral!

Another great and thorough look at a terrific nostalgic cartoon! Born in 1991 like me! I have course love the original and Chuckie was always my favorite!
I still watch Rugrats after the toilet train episode and it can be good things for Chuckle. Not all 2.3,4 & 5 before kindergaten age little kids within the Rugrats Universal and samethings in real life.

Rugrats came out on my 7th birthday on August 11th,1991. Since then, Rugrats, Doug and Ren& Stumpy became a great part of my afternoon and summer! To this day, I love and appreciate what Nicktoons did for the channel, because before them, it was Danger Mouse, Count Duckula, and random tv specials like Chuck Jones White Seal/ Riki Tiki Tavi!
Amazingly wonderful I remember having of my very first Rugrats VHS tape which is unknown because the one I have how's that sticker a little bit loose or just peeled off which I might think it's Tommy troubles but I'm not exactly sure looks like I'm ready to go over some episodes and find out what tastes that I had over a few years or so and I didn't even got myself a second Rugrats video tape until probably 2018 apparently once I got Rugrats Easter and I enjoyed it I hope that I will get more in the future and if I could remember the first DVD of Rugrats it would either be the DVD of decades in diapers or a bonus 2Pack DVD which are the Rugrats movie and Rugrats Go Wild and then the DVD which I got from Target from something else I also have Rugrats in Paris the movie and I enjoyed one of them in this show and absolutely amazing even though it went through 1991 until 2004 I might see if this is good or just average or just okay the one from 2003 and 2008 but I do know that special and I've seen the few skits twice when I looked at the new clip of the Rugrats Revival reboot I was very excited I'm very happy that they finally returned I did see the whole episode of Second Time Around in some other episodes on a certain RUclips channel Rugrats before it gone claimed because probably I won't be able to get the Paramount plus streaming service itself but oh well very amazing to hear the original cast reprise their roles and for the new voice actors played the adult characters in my opinion I think one of them are just either good or just okay like Tommy Dewey as Stu pickles and I think it's pretty good despite that Jack Riley passed away in 2016 as I said before overall amazing for Rugrats being around over 30th years sets the first episode in 1991 Tommy's first birthday.
I just saw Rugrats Go Wild
I wanna go back 🔙 to being a kid again

The 90s rugrats tv show beaten the Loud House For me In the cartoon box office.
"It seems like the 90s classic cartoons are showing their power in the world of animation. Rugrats has managed to beat out the current powerhouse of animation, Loud House, on the cartoon box office. This is a big win for the Rugrats franchise, and it hints at a shift in the world of children's cartoons. We'll have to stay tuned to see if the 90s classics can continue their dominance, and learn if they can maintain their position at the top of the children's television charts."
i got a filmora ad and this video is sponsored by filmora
RUGRATS is actually a colloquialism for babies, particularly crawling babies
As much as I enjoy the original show from the 90s, I... surprisingly prefer the CGI remake. I never thought that I would say this. 😧
This is probably one of the better modern remakes along with DuckTales.
Because the CGI actually makes fantasy segments more exciting then the 2D animation did.
The original voice actresses sound like they haven't changed in the last 30 years.
And nothing against Cheryl Chase, because that was the intention of the show, but I found Angelica's voice not as aggravating as in the original show. Probably because she's aged over time and maybe the voice technology has improved over the years.
The fan base of the rugrats is very a strong family 😊
The Rugrats was and still is my shit!! I grew up with the show, among other Nickelodeon greats, and it still is my favorite Nick cartoon ever!! I say Tommy and Angelica were my favorite characters and I treasure every episode, I even started buying the seasons on DVD and OF COURSE I have all 3 theatrical movies!! And “TAKE ME THERE” by Mya, Blackstreet & Ma$e STILL gets played out damn near every month!! The Rugrats will always be apart of my life!! Even my nieces are watching the show!! I have yet to check out the new Paramount+ production but the classic will always be apart of my home and heart!! Thank you to the creators of that phenomenal cartoon show!! I’m almost 33 this year and I’m STILL enjoying the show and movies!!❤️❤️❤️
This is really cool!
Because you like Rugrats and is one of your favorite shows of all time, Right?
That’s right! :)
I grew up watching Rugrats. It was my favorite show as a kid
19:39
Spongebob: WHERES MY HOLLYWOOD WALK OF FAME?!
Tommy Pickles is my Favorite. :-)
I love the original. I grew up with it (I was born in the early '90s). I saw all three movies in theaters as a kid. And I occasionally will watch episodes on Hulu (and watch the holiday specials every year for Halloween, Thanksgiving, etc). I don't remember too much about All Grown Up, but I remember really liking it and I plan to do a rewatch of it on Paramount+ (just finished the original series rewatch last week before starting the reboot).
I like what I saw of the reboot. The voices for the adults are still growing on me, but I really do enjoy how they've updated it for the modern era. I do Charlotte needs an overhaul of her character, though. It has a lot of potential and I'm really looking forward to future episodes.
Pickles I Can't Believe Angelica She Has The Same Last Name Like Tommy
Because they’re cousins ☺️
I always laughed that Chucky Finster was modeled after Child's Play Chucky- right down the color scheme of his shirt and crazy red hair!
After the success of Muppet Babies many studios many studios did series with younger versions of their most popular characters, like The Flinstones, Scooby Doo or Yogi.
It makes Rugrats more meritory because the baby/very young theme was already overused.
hey dave can you do the evolution of ren and stimpy?
Probably not, sorry.
that's ok dude i understand
Yeah. He'd probably have to watch Adult Cartoon Party for that one. I don't wish that on anybody.
That would be cool, but I understand Dave’s opinion not everyone has to like the same things
On one hand, it would sound like an interesting video for him to do in response to the upcoming reboot. But on the other hand, yeah, that means he would have to go through APC for that one too..
All grown up is one of my favorites cuz the Rugrats are just for kids all grown up is way better
I'm really upset that they changed everything that happened in the original source material. The animation, voice acting, and the characters. They even excluded four important Rugrats characters, and that's one of the reasons why I'm frustrated over the reboot. And besides, I really wanted a fourth Rugrats film as well as a sixth season and a film adaptation of All Grown Up! I really miss Kimi, Dil, Kira, Howard, and the Wild Thornberrys characters (which, I know they have their own series and that they only appeared in the crossover film Rugrats Go Wild, but they deserved to appear more often in the original Rugrats series).
Kimi, Kira and Dil did not appear in the original series until seasons 6-7. There are more episodes _without_ them than _with_ them. You’ll find most older viewers have more fond memories of the original series before they started overloading with new characters.
Creators have said that this series picks up after season 3 of the original - these characters will be introduced to the new show over time, just as they were in the original.
I love acorn nuts and diapey butts. it's my favourite episode of the whole show! the puffy diapers Phil and Lil had to wear was downright hilarious I think! very unique concept.
really great retrospective overall. I personally do find it interesting how they slightly aged susie down a little bit and made her most friendly with the babies, although I just wonder if her siblings will be present in the reboot at all possibly?
I guess they wanted to get her more involved in the action. I hope Dill and Kimmi show up. I love them.
Preschool Daze only had 4 episodes versus Rugrats 172?! Wow!
The shortest running show on Nickelodeon
Yep
Great job, Dave!
My favorite is the original series. I think I dropped the show not too long after the babysitter Taffy got introduced.
As for favorite character, it's Lil as she had a character arc through all the series and the last movie of wanting to be seen separate from her twin.
Yes very true I like what they did with her in the go wild movie too.
Since you mentioned “The Simpsons” in this video, please do an evolution on American’s favorite animated yellow family, please?
Yep! Coming later this year.
Nice video! You should do tmnt next if you haven’t already…
Won’t be next! But they’re on my list, eventually.
I watched the show as a kid. I remember when we got internet, I saw the promos for the first movie.
I was obsessed with Rugrats as a kid. How do I not remember that Runaway Reptar special? Also there was also a back door pilot for The Carmichaels, it was a Kwanza special.
