I never thought a character could have this many iterations from this many different studios. Very fascinating. Still, at the end of the day, I prefer the Looney Tunes version.
I'm most familiar with the Looney Tunes one though I have also seen Donald's Trick or Treat. Mandela Effect: But I thought the Disney Witch Hazel also had green skin but obviously I was confusing her with the WB version. Another interesting thing that I thought about her but I thought she introduced herself as "Granny" so I didn't realize that she was also named Witch Hazel until.much later when my adult mind confused the two.
Here's an interesting trivia: both Disney's and Warner's Witch Hazel were dubbed in Portugal by the same voice actress, Luísa Salgueiro. And she used the exact same voice for both. And even the DuckTales version of the character shares the same voice (in Portugal) with the new voice for Warner's character, being voiced by Carla Mendes. Edit: I forgot to mention a nice trivia. Disney's Hazel was named Bruxa Vanda in the comics (but kept the name Hazel in the cartoon) and Bruxa Avelã in the DuckTales reboot. The Looney Tunes character kept the original name (unless they changed in the two last series (New Looney Tunes and Looney Tunes Cartoons), but I'm not aware of that change).
It's true that Witch Hazel is such an obvious pun it's difficult to argue any kind of theft. You might as well sue everyone that's used the name Belladonna for a witchy character.
Hey Dave! Greetings from Hollywood! June Foray was a dear friend of mine for many years, until the day she died. She once told me that people used to say she was “The Female Mel Blanc”. But then she said that Warner Bros. Cartoon Director Chuck Jones heartily disagreed. Chuck always said “Mel was the male June Foray”! My lovely wife Jennifer and I used to visit June at her home in Woodland Hills, California on Saturdays, and we’d all go out to lunch. June would never let me pay for it! Let me tell you, Dave - I really miss June. She was just so delightful a person, and a ton of fun! I love you, June, wherever you are… and I always will. But you’ve already known that for decades. As I told you before your exit from this plane, we WILL meet again. Happy Halloween, my darling! (Written October 25, 2022)
I think my favorite version of Witch Hazel is the Warner Bros. version. Because I’ve seen her on television every so often having no idea that there were different iterations of the character. It’s generally enough to make my head spin like a top.
As German person I have read an abundance of these Italian comics (which are very wide spread across the continent) and I saw this witch so many times. I had no idea how long and deep her history was
Eh, maybe "Hazel" is like the "Smith" of the Witch community, very common name. Or there was a period of time when witches named their kids Hazel because it was incredibly popular. Anyway, I remember that Bugs Bunny special. It's hilariously bad. "A Haunting We Will Go" reuses quite a lot from Bewitched Bunny, and you get BOTH cartoons in the special, so you get to see a poorly reanimated version of everything you just saw. And with Speedy's voice the second time doing the exact same lines. But yeah, WB's Hazel is just the best of the bunch. Madcapped, crazy design, one of the most underrated of Bugs' antagonists. You almost can tell he enjoys her company more than the others.
I had no idea Witch Hazel had such a sordid past and so many iterations!! I Love what they did with her character in "The Looney Tunes Show" 😅 Never knew most of this so far!🐒 I'd like to read some of those Italian comics!
Great video! Thanks for hunting down all these witches. I grew up with the Disney comics in Germany, and I knew witch Hazel from them, and later, when the cartoons started to be shown on TV (starting end of 1979...) from Trick or Treat. She's a great character! And her having iterations in other franchises makes her even more fascinating!
Beautiful episode and thanks for talking about Italian comics! In fact, I did not know they had the same name in English, we call " Strega Hazel" only the one from Looney Tunes and, as you said, "Strega Nocciola" the disney version (she was very famous in the comics here). I'll tell you an anecdote: I am the voice actor of Marvin the Martian (since The Looney tunes Show) and we have always had important voice actresses for such a sporadic character: like Alina Moradei (voice of Angela Lansbury) for Nocciola and Graziella Polesinanti (lots of actresses) for Hazel.
Grazie, Antonio!! Glad you enjoyed the episode - and so happy to talk about the Italian comics! Thank you for the anecdotes, I’d love to hear your work!
I never knew this about Witch Hazel. I'm very surprised different studios were allowed to use that name. Being a part-time amateur attorney of 1950s-era cartoons, I'm going to say WB wasn't sued by Disney because WB's was first portrayed as a parody of the Disney one. I would love to see a real lawyer discuss this.
Warner's Witch Hazel is among my favorite Looney Tunes characters since her exaggerated 'witchy-ness' perfectly fits with their brand of humor. Her cackle is also a major delight. The only other Witch Hazel I'm fully familiar with is the 'Trick or Treat' Disney one. I never knew she had a large role in international comics, but I like the idea of her dealing with Goofy's skepticism and hanging out with other Disney witches. As for her namesake in the "Ducktales" reboot, I admire her for carrying the same hat design despite her more intimidating personality. Beyond that, I might have seen the "Tom and Jerry" version at some point, but the rest are completely new to me. Though I gotta admit, it's interesting how Casper's Witch Hazel resembles another Harveytoons character, Little Audrey.
I'd say I like both the Disney and Looney Tunes version of Hazel Witch. Now I see them both as different witches then them being the same witch just different looking. I too would love to see a return of Disney's Witch Hazel too! As always another great video Dave!
Dave Lee Down Under, this is one of your best videos, every! I never knew about the history of the character of Witch Hazel. Witch Hazel is just another reason for the rivalry between Walt Disney and Warner Brothers. It's also cool to know that June Foray and Bea Benaderet both voiced another cartoon character besides Betty Rubble. Betty Rubble voices: June Foray (Pilot, 1959) and Bea Benaderet (1960-1964)
The Witch Hazel from the Bugs bunny Cartoons with her dance and bobby pins falling off seems to stand out the most while the other ones in the other cartoons seem to be more smooth sailing.
One note: Lulu's Witch Hazel became a permanent recurring character starting in 1955 and beyond, being featured in almost every issue; alongside her niece, Little Itch. They replaced the imaginative and creative fairy tales that Lulu would tell to Alvin pre-1955. John Stanley (primary writer for Lulu) also gave his own spin on famous cartoon characters in his comics (i.e. Woody Woodpecker, Nancy, Oswald)
I'm surprised that Disney's Witch Hazel came first, but ironically in the nicest of ways, I feel like Warner Bros. made the better Witch Hazel foil than Disney did.
Also June Foray made a better WH in Warner Cartoons than Bea Benaderet. Bea's voice sounded to close to Granny's from the Tweety cartoons. June did it better
That was a heck of a treat! I love Disney's 1952 "Trick or Treat". But any classic WB cartoon featuring their Witch Hazel is good for a laugh, Being from Stratford-upon-Avon (birthplace of Sam Crubish), I have a real soft spot for "A Witch's Tangled Hare". And MGM's "Bottles" is a wonderfully scary cartoon in its own right. Ah, so many memories of Sunday afternoons in front of the telly!
This is by far one of the most fascinating cartoon evolutions you've done since I was always curious about the legal shenanigans surrounding Witch Hazel. I don't know if you'll ever get a chance like that again but I love you talking about multie studios in one video. Awesome stuff
I love the videos. Other cartoon evolution videos i would love to see are alvin and the chipmunks, tmnt, little lulu, garfield, top cat, the smurfs, the simpsons, family guy, hey arnold, goofy's son max, king of the hill, arthur, bearenstein bears and Clifford the big red dog. Around the Holliday you should do rudolph, frosty and Santa claus.
There was a 1982 TV special called "Disney's Halloween Treat" that featured the Donald Duck/Witch Hazel "Trick or Treat" cartoon, and I wonder that many of us kids simply recognised the voice of the character without even remembering what she looked like... you couldn't just re-watch everything at will like we can now. Her cackle is unmistakable :)
So many Witch Hazels! Seems like that's either a very common name in the witching world or there's some multiverse shenanigans going on. Thanks for this deep dive into the Hazelverse!
I would have to go to the Warner Brothers Witch Hazel because that's the one that I recognized the most and her actresses are either great, good or just all right.
This is so fascinating! Honestly I'd love to see more fun little industry-wide easter eggs like this in modern times. It has an air of friendly competition/co-habitation about it.
Two Series Combined In One Episode About Witch Hazel That Pretty Good Combination Concept! However I Was Able To Easily See Looney Tunes Version Of Witch Hazel Since She Was Most Recoginzed Rather Than Disney Version.
hey Dave one evolution that could be interesting is santa claus you could just talk about the most popular one would that be to much keep up the great work 👍
Great video on Hazel the witch. Can you do a pop culture evolution video on Black Panther since people are already excited for the upcoming sequel Wakanda Forever please?
Thank you. Sorry, the superhero Evolutions are incredibly risky. The last two I did are two of my worst performing Evolutions ever. Sadly, I won’t be doing anymore for the foreseeable future.
Also I think it’s cool that June foray had a tight relationship with not only Warner Bros, but Hanna barabera when she not only voiced their witch, but toms new white owner. Especially since Warner bros now owns Hanna Barbera properties

Hey Dave The Only Looney Tunes Characters You Haven’t Done Yet is Granny and Pepe Le Pew But Wow Didn’t Know that Witch Hazel was a Disney Character Too I Thought She was a Looney Tunes Character but I Learned New Things Every Day
Not sure I'll be doing any more Looney Tunes for a while - this was a bit of a special one off. I've already covered Granny in the Sylvester and Tweety video and aren't sure she really needs her own video - and no plans to cover Pepe.
If I'm gonna be honest, Witches and other "Halloween" monsters and creatures were originally created as folktales, lores and myths. "Notice that I ride sidesaddle, a mark of quality."
As German person I have read an abundance of these Italian comics (which are very wide spread across the continent) and I saw this witch so many times. I had no idea how long and deep her history was
You can say Hazel's the few characters to be allowed to be from studio to another, back to back to back, now that's a real witch!
Eh, maybe "Hazel" is like the "Smith" of the Witch community, very common name. Or there was a period of time when witches named their kids Hazel because it was incredibly popular. I think I prefer Witch Hazel over Witch Hazel just a bit more. I don’t know, what do you guys think?
which witch hazel? 😭😭
No way! Witch Hazel is the best one.
Witch Hazel for sure!
You guys are crazy Witch Hazel would take down the other Witch Hazels hands down. (Why is this reminding me of the "Queen Victoria Handicap" sketch?😆)

Wow this was a interesting cartoon evolution. That's crazy that every studio uses a different witch style but with the same name
I never knew this about Witch Hazel. I'm very surprised different studios were allowed to use that name. Being a part-time amateur attorney of 1950s-era cartoons, I'm going to say WB wasn't sued by Disney because WB's was first portrayed as a parody of the Disney one. Since “Witch Hazel” is a plant, and such an obvious pun, I’m sure Disney can’t really claim ownership.
Looney Tunes's Hazel will always be my favorite version of the witch
Hands down WB's Witch hazel for the win! "Notice how I ride side saddle. It proves I'm a lady of quality" She has had some of the best lines!
"Silly me! That was my sweeping broom!"
Trick or treat is one of my favorite Disney cartoons of all time!
Mine too. Love the song especially.
So is mine too.
Trick or treat, trick or treat, trick or treat for Halloween!
Warner's Witch Hazel is among my favorite Looney Tunes characters since her exaggerated 'witchy-ness' perfectly fits with their brand of humor. Her cackle is also a major delight.

I love seeing hazel in the 1980s and 1990s like space jam and the looney tunes show!
can't wait for the epic crossover, Witch Hazel: into the Witchaverse
That was a heck of a treat! I love Disney's 1952 "Trick or Treat". This is the only multi-evolution that I ever watched.
It’s the only one I’ve ever done lol
Witch Hazel is like a time lord with many incarnations
Hey there Dave. I just came for the sake of this video to say... Happy Halloween! 🎃🎃🎃
Happy Halloween, Amani! 👻

holly cow. Greek Mickey Mouse comics. Now we're talking
FANTASTIC
I believe Witch Hazel is a common name for cartoon witches and ironically most of them were voiced by June Forey RIP.
i like this New Take on The Evolution Series (Unless you already did something like this that i haven't seen)
A fascinating insight into one of my favourite ever Warner Bros. characters ever. You've made my Friday night 😁
Two Series Combined In One Episode About Witch Hazel That Pretty Good Combination Concept!

My favorite iteration is probably Witch Lezah, from The Looney Tunes Show. Roz Ryan is a VA legend!

hey Dave one evolution that could be interesting is santa claus you could just talk about the most popular one would that be to much keep up the great work 👍

It’s been a while since you made a “explaining Disney” video
I did one for Buzz Lightyear a few months ago - but before that, yes, it's been quite a while!
