CARTOON EVOLUTION #18
To celebrate their 70th Anniversary, I take a look at the history and evolution of SNOOPY, CHARLIE BROWN and the entire PEANUTS gang, vibrantly melancholy creations of cartoonist Charles M Schulz.
First published in American newspapers in 1950, spawning from an earlier strip - Li’l Folks, the Peanuts comic strip exploded into the world-wide spotlight in the middle-60s with tens of millions of readers, spawning a mass merchandising craze and an expansive multi-media franchise, consisting of over 50 specials, films and television series and numerous stage productions. In its wake, Peanuts has left an enormous impact on popular and social culture, with TV Guide calling the specials “the greatest TV cartoons of all time.”
I trace the entire history of Schulz’s strip and its translation into the cartoon medium - spotlighting changes made to narrative presentation and visual design over the last seven decades.

I once read a "Star Trek the Next Generation" novel (I don't remember the name of it.) that had some dialogue that went something like this: after having lost a minor battle, Riker says to his sergeant: "Winning isn't everything.". His sergeant replied, "But losing isn't anything. I heard that a twentieth century philosopher named Charlie Brown came up with that.". Riker said, "This Charlie Brown must have been a very wise person.". The sergeant said, "I suspect he was."
That's awesome! I really want find which that book was now!
I'd like to think, if the series were to ever end, Charlie Brown would marry the little red haired girl, become a successful Baseball Coach, and have his kids interacting with snoopys pups in their own adventures.
That would be nice. It would make Charlie Brown happy. But I don't think that Schultz would've wanted it that way.
Ok
‘’’’’’’’’’’
That would truly be a happy ending
After all he was a kid for about 50 years
Peanuts is something I’ve never stopped appreciating throughout my life. In fact, I actually respect the series more than ever as an adult. The warm sincerity of Peanuts is genuinely unlike anything else. Even to this day.
Peanuts is like The Little Prince, you gonna read it in different times of your life, and the meaning becomes much more powerful as you years get older.
As an administrator on Peanuts Wiki, I thank you, Dave, for an excellent video.
Thanks Simon, I appreciate that! Glad you liked it!!
The man himself
Just seeing this makes me want to do snoopy's happy dance
When asked why he wanted to put a Christian angle into the special, Charles Schultz said, "If we don't, who will?"
Thank God for that.
God bless Charles Schulz.

Excellent! Watterson was so right! Every comic strip artist over the last 60 years owes much to Shultz. What a master of the medium!

I still have my "Golden Collection" book from when I was a kid.
I have a large christmas pillow
I always love how the Peanuts Movie’s animation style (and similar movies) stays accurate to the 2D animation style; it’s like instead of making a model and moving it, they take 2D drawings and translate them into 3D, including cheated angles, disproportionate parts, and smears, making the characters look accurate.
I never called it peanuts. I remember being confused at 8 years old when I brought a Charlie Brown's shirt and my teacher was like "oh you like peanuts". I answered yes because I do enjoy eating peanuts..😅
😂😂😂 amazing
As a kid I always would refer to the cartoons and specials as Charlie Brown or Snoopy. When I was younger the Charlie Brown & Snoopy show came on when I'd get home from school, so oddly enough I grew up not knowing it was called Peanuts till I read the comic strip.
It's funny that most people refer to the strips and cartoon specials as "Charlie Brown." They don't usually refer to the cartoons as "Peanuts".
Never understood that either. My mom said it was called peanuts. But everybody always said Charlie Brown.
Hello
When I worked at the hospital near his home, he funded a support group for children who had significant loss. It was called “Good Grief” When he came in for open heart surgery, he drew a cartoon on a wall showing Snoopy using an incentive spirometer, also known as a Triflo that encourages deep breathing to prevent pneumonia. A truly gracious Christian man who used his melancholy to help others express their feelings.
You deserve more appreciation fam, hard work pays off.
Thank you!

Bill Watterston was right, Peanuts was waaaay ahead of its time. Extremely influential and not just in comics.
"Good Grief, Mate"
The Peanuts Franchise is without a doubt one of my favorite animated Franchise and I really enjoy Charlie Brown and Snoopy as characters and the mundane life they endure.
Looking forward to Charlie Brown's voice evolution and which cartoon character you will cover for December's Cartoon Evolution.
Good Grief, look how far the Peanuts have come.
Charles Schultz was a genius and has left the world a priceless legacy. May he rest in peace knowing what goodness he gifted us all.
I love every adventure the Peanuts gang has because the Peanuts have always been the funnest comic then and now.♥️
The best characters are Lucy, Linus, Peremint Patty, Marcy, Charlie Brown himself, Pig-Pen, and Snoopy.
@José Lucas I get that. It still makes me laugh though. There are heartwarming moments too.
Don't forget about Sally! Actually, I may just be bias because I'm her in a Charlie Brown Christmas play hahah.
@@brynnashley2738 I love Sally too. She is very relatable. She often gets words mixed up because she is little and she is slightly dim. Also, she is really lazy and hates school.
I always liked one of the 'forgotten' characters.... "5" - he was always a good character back in the late 60s/early70s; that weirdness that his parents called him and his siblings after numbers instead of 'normal' names... it made for some very funny cartoon strips with Charlie Brown.... ;-)
@@stevesstuff1450 Violet and Patty are underrated They are a lot of fun and get some really good lines.
It’s been 70 years and they’re still kids lol
I see a lot of youtubers present clips of 4:3 projects in the impressive style of ditching the black bars altogether and using part of the clips to replace the black bars. I like it
The Snoopy theme is the best stuff.

Charlie Brown and Friends has to be one of the best comic strips with the best team of animators to ever exist. It's hard to pick a favorite special, but I really love It's Christmas Time Again Charlie Brown. It has so many good moments, from Charlie Brown trying to make money to buy gloves for the red-haired girl to Peppermint Patty bemoaning having to play a sheep in the Christmas play.
One of the best comic strips of all time next to Calvin and Hobbes.
The boondocks was great as well
I've seen 'nate and the 'docks and liked them both. I've been into comics since a little kid, but never the superhero comic books. I do, and have always liked Tintin too, having first seen them run strip style in Highlights for Children in the mid '70s, then rediscovering them with a Nerd clique in the early 1980s. More than most others in my family, I think, I've always been into comics & animation. This spread to European and Asian offerings too. I always like the depth, even when I don't agree with what is being pushed Calvin & Hobbes are like this, and a beloved & missed strip. I respect Watterson's decision, and have no disrespect for it. Thank you all artists living & dead for your gifts-Tom.
And garfield
@@kuzregoistgold2544 Garfield is amazing but I wouldn't call it the best. Soild 8 out of 10. It almost always makes me laugh.

Peanuts will always be timeless! 20 years after Schultz's death I still read his classic strips.
I have a whole set of figurines of the main cast of Penauts, but my Charlie Brown figurine got lost somewhere in my house and I haven't seen it anywhere since 2017. :( Of all of them, why did the main character have to get lost?
Fitting, given his lot in life.
Because obviously.
Good Grief!
Charlie Brown has not had a good life.
The little redhead girl was based off a crush Schulz had.
I remember learning about that in a documentary about Peanuts. I also remember that her name was Donna and that Schultz did proposed marriage to her but she turned him down.

Great Video Dave and Happy 70th anniversary Charlie Brown and Snoopy
Peanuts has been my favorite comic strip since I was eight years old. Good ol' Charlie Brown is my favorite Peanuts character. I can relate to his ups and downs, and self esteem issues. Yet, he keeps hoping for the best, and keeps trying.
Thanks Vincent
I absolutely love peanuts it was probably my first comic strip I’ve ever read and my first cartoon show I’ve ever watched my favorite peanuts movie is probably the Christmas one where it has the most iconic Christmas song ever so thank you and by the way snoop is my favorite but all I Gotta say is thank you Schulz for making peanuts and Rest In Peace
Good grief! A FANTASTIC cartoon evolution with a hilarious intro! Its always a joy seeing a favorite series covered! Not only a perfect video for November, but an excellent 🎁 before Christmas!
Thank you for making such an interesting and informative video. I love Peanuts, but your work on not only this video but throughout your RUclips site is simply spot on terrific. Thank you for your dedication to high quality videos that educate and entertain.
Thanks so much, Derek!! I really appreciate that!
This is honestly one of my favorite videos from the channel. Thank you so much!
Thank YOU for the kind words and for watching! 🙏🏻
The great thing about peanuts (or in Schutz words Charlie Brown and Friends) is that they're more than iconic they're Timeless. My favorite two of my favorite peanuts stories are A Charlie Brown Christmas and Snoopy Come Home. My third favorite Peanuts story is of course the 2015 peanuts movie.
Brilliant to get some history and context for all the animated features at last. Thank you!
Some tidbits & corrections:
*A "friend" named Charlie Brown*
As in, Schulz's alter-ego.
*A sharply-dressed bald boy*
Charlie Brown is not bald. Like Schulz himself, Charlie Brown is lightly blond with very thin hair.
*Numerous boys with the name Charlie Brown*
Technically, all iterations of Charlie Brown are the same character.
*Short children with large round heads*
Aka the "Round-Headed Kid"/"Blockhead" look.
*He suggested calling it Charlie Brown & Friends*
Hence why the comic strip later became _Peanuts ft. Good Old Charlie Brown_ years later & the '80s TV series was instead named _The Charlie Brown & Snoopy Show_ and why a lot of the specials were themselves titled _[Insert Plot Thread Here], Charlie Brown_ rather than the _Peanuts_ brand name.
*Lucy represented his own sarcastic & fussy side*
She was also inspired by his first wife Joyce's nagging, particularly whenever Lucy's seen calling out Charlie Brown's faults, complete with video projector slides.
*Linus, his spiritual side*
He was also based on a philosophical friend with separation anxiety issues (thus, the term "security blanket" being based upon the one Linus carries).
*Hence why Charlie Brown never recieved a valentine*
Excluding rare exceptions in the TV specials/the '80s _The Charlie Brown & Snoopy Show_ TV series/Internet webisodes, of course.
*Tanked in his plight to attract the Little Red-Haired Girl*
She was given the name Heather in _It's Your First Kiss, Charlie Brown_ (although Schulz's had since said afterward that this was non-canonical); She was also based on a co-worker from one of Schulz's first jobs (outside of drawing "that comic strip with Charlie Brown & friends in it") whom Schulz wanted to ask out, but never had the gumption to actually do so.
*Kick a football out of Lucy's hands*
Charlie Brown turning invisible thanks to Snoopy's accidental magic in _It's Magic, Charlie Brown_ as one singular exception.
*Bill Melendez*
Else known as the animated "voice" of Snoopy & Woodstock!
Another excellent job! Love the title on this one. The Christmas special's maybe tied with the Halloween one. Linus's speech always gets to me. But I love the partially psychedelic Snoopy vs. Red Baron sequence in the latter the most. Along with that, I always cherish the Snoopy/Red Baron book I got as a kid c. 1970, with each page in different colors. As far as the comic, there are a lot of longer-form stories from the '60s and '70s that I enjoy, but I'm really fond of the strips on the last year or so of the series where Re-Run is drawing "underground comics".
Amazing video with a beautiful story, videos like these are when I wish I could give a like twice
I still remember MetLife using Snoopy as their mascot.
Those blimps! _"Get Met. It Pays."_
Owning the big books of every comic are really something you'll want to cherish.
My mom adores Snoopy. Whenever the family needs to get holiday or birthday cards for her, we always go for Snoopy.
Snoopy is an amazing and cool dog! I find him more interesting than the other characters!
Stray thoughts:
I thought as a kid that the 90's Frosty special was a Peanuts ripoff until I saw who animated it.
In 2012 Japanese studio Madhouse had been awarded rights to produce Peanuts animation but did not immediately state what for. English internet went "lol Peanuts anime" and promptly forgot about it. A Peanuts tumblr account in 2013 says it was simply for MetLife TV ads broadcast in Asia.
Anyway, great video.
Dude, when you said “Peanuts anime” my mind immediately conjured up a Peanuts version of Evangelion with Charlie Brown as Shinji and Lucy as Asuka. Now I can’t unsee it.
Everybody talks until the teacher pulls out the charlie brown VHS
For some reason in Spain Snoopy ended becoming the mascot of preppy girls, swearing in his name when they wanted to tell the truth.
My favorite movies/special were "Race for Your Life Charlie Brown" and "Bon Voyage Charlie Brown", the later breaking one of the Peanut premises with Charlie finally receiving a letter.
I always thought you would do a cartoon eveloution focusing on the other meaning of cartoons I’m so happy with how good it turned out
Charles was a gift to humanity
Once again Dave, Another excellent video! It was great getting to learn more about the history and evolution of the Peanuts gang. I wonder what December's Cartoon Evolution episode might be? Rudolph? The Grinch? Or, Who Knows?
Another Looney Tune
I hope you get around to "Evolution of Blondie". That one has a start that isn't anything like what we know to have become (Blondie was a flapper in the 1920s and Dagwood was the heir to a fortune) and I used to love the movies when I was a kid, not realizing the films were from the 1930s and 1940s.
Thank you for finally making the peanuts evolution video.
Great as always
27:32 - "For those wondering, Charlie Brown never once kicked the football out of Lucy's hands, with Schulz remarking, 'The Charlie Browns in this life never really do succeed.'" And yet, Schulz saw Charlie Brown as the character most like himself. I get the impression that he never really felt how much he had achieved.

@@DaveLeeDownUnder Wow Thank You Mate! Much Appreciated from across the world😁 31 today😣
I first fell in love with the Peanuts Gang in 1967...I was 10 years of age and at Christmas that year I received several books about them.... the Peanuts Gang got me through a very rough childhood as a place I could go in the books and comics to read and escape the real world....I started collecting Peanuts Gang items then and I still do today at age 67...Our house is filled with my collection and is displayed in many rooms...I don't know if it's the largest collection, but it might be the oldest!!
I always felt the Charlie Brown and Snoopy Show was vastly underrated and was taken from us before its time. Most of the stories were based on full week or even longer story arcs you'd only otherwise see in big comic strip collection books. I also loved those non-holiday specific specials that you just don't see anymore. The holiday ones are great and all, but I just love these animated versions of comic strip style stories. Garfield did take better to the Saturday Morning Cartoon medium, but only because that property didn't have the same creative control Peanuts did. I'd go as far to say that Mark Evainer was the one that really tapped the fat cat's potential.
Comics like Garfield can get worse and worse as time goes on, but Peanuts was solid the whole time.
Congarats on 75K!!
Peanuts is such an amazing (and iconic) series that can be enjoyed the world over! Sharp kids with the most witty quips and thought provoking messages that can bring you laughs but leaves you with a great sense of fulfilment!

"A Charlie Brown Christmas" will always be my all time favorite as it introduced me to the music of Vince Guaraldi and "Linus and Lucy"(the one everyone THINKS is "The Charlie Brown theme"), specifically, as it inspired me to learn to play the piano. 45 years later, and I've been a successful professional pianist for 33 years. I can't stress enough how this video made me happy.
Charlie Brown is one of the most iconic pieces of media in the world. Great job on covering it, Dave :)
My favorite special? A Charlie Brown Christmas! It still holds up after all these years. I saw the original broadcast.
In the film Kill Bill there's a character who's referred to as "Charlie Brown". He's a mild mannered owner of a restaurant that's been taken over by the 88's gang. The gang constantly tease and harass the poor gang. And why is he called Charlie Brown? He's wearing a kimono inspired by Charli Brown's classic yellow shirt with the jagged black stripe.
I think that the musical score for A Charlie Brown Christmas is the best of them all. There's a CD by the same name that includes more great music by the composer.
The Ace Pilot Facing The Red Baron Is My Favorite Part Of All Things Peanuts
Wow! The first ever character from this series to originate from the 1950s!
And thanks for using Charlie Brown's zigzags on the thumbnail this time.
I just checked apple TV+ after watching this, and peanuts was everywhere!!! (They had two of the old specials from the 60s and 70s)
Thanks for the heart!
Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang are among the comic icons.

I love Peanuts, I can't imagine a world without the TV specials and I watch them with my family every year and the strips are still able to make me smile.
So do I!
I have no idea why now, but when I first saw this Peanuts strip at age 11, I couldn't stop laughing:
(Charlie Brown and Linus are talking at a stone wall)
Linus: What do you want to be when you grow up?
(slight pause)
Charlie Brown: Outrageously happy!
I love The Peanuts Movie and the scene where Snoopy was dancing with the red cloth.
The special *What Have We Learned, Charlie Brown?* is still engraved in my memory. Definitely one of my favorites, such a masterpiece! It's absolutely stunning!
I cry at the part where Linus recites the poem In Flanders Fields by Lieutenant Colonel JM McRay.

A Charlie Brown Christmas is an early achievement that cannot be surpassed. Its sheer honesty has kept me viewing it EVERY year since 1965... the first airing. I do NOT allow myself to watch it out of season, or on video.
"I was robbed! I spent the whole night waiting for the great pumpkin, when I could've been out for trick-or-treats! Halloween is over, and I've missed it! You blockhead! I used to live in California, and was a frequent visitor to "Knott's Berry Farm". In 1983, a section of the theme park was opened, called "Camp Snoopy", which is a woodsy area featuring Charles Shultz creations. During Halloween, it is called "Camp Spooky", and there are shows for the young ones, as well as trick and treating.
My mom is a massive Peanuts fan, being born in the early 60’s she grew up with them and continued watching and reading them. As me and my brothers were born and grew up we’ve also grew to love the Gang and continue our own traditions of watching the holiday themed specials and the rest around what we think is the appropriate times. We are hoping to continue this tradition with one of my brother’s kids when he and his wife have them and also mine and my other brother’s kids (if we both ever get around to marriage first).
Good grief that was awesome! I’ve been a peanuts fan ever since I was a kid.
Fun 🤩 Fact: Woodstock made his first appearance unnamed in the strip on March 4, 1966. He wouldn’t be named Woodstock in the strip until June 22, 1970. He is named after the 1969 music 🎶 festival in New York state.
Well that was fun.
