- CARTOON EVOLUTION #44 - GARFIELD
Launching in 1976 in a local newspaper, within a matter of years, Garfield exploded into the mainstream - almost immediately becoming one of the most well-known and most beloved Comic strip characters of all time. Garfield quickly became a merchandising behemoth, rivalled only by Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny, and Snoopy for popularity. Making the jump to the screen, Garfield would go on to star in a dozen animated specials, three television series, and three big-screen adventures.
To celebrate almost 50 years of the Monday-hating cat, I’ll trace his entire Evolution from 1976 to now, covering his history and inception and covering his many appearances and changes over the years.
Here's my look at Garfield the years.

This sarcastic tabby is one of the funniest and most relatable characters ever. My dad has always been obsessed with this sarcastic tabby, and the day he got me into him is one I hold dear in my heart. We watched this video together and we both love it. Thank you so much.
This is so wonderful to hear! I’m glad you both had a good time with the video 😊
Thank you!
@@DaveLeeDownUnder All Episodes of original tv show can be found on RUclips as well as most of the old specials.
Garfield was also planned to have his own theme park, but it was scaled down to a few rides in Kennywood Park, including an infamous re-theme of the old mill boat ride called, "Garfield's Nightmare."
Defunctland did an amazing video about the ride, even touching on those previous attempts at Garfield in theme parks that got scrapped.
I grew up on Garfield and Friends, and it still holds up today. Mark Evanier is a very sharp writer who's done loads of TV and comics, and his style works so well with this character.
He was not afraid to make Garfield quite savage quite often, and I love him for that.
same
Remember seeing it on nickelodeon in the late 90s
Garfield is quite an iconic cartoon character. I have enjoyed his comic strips and television appearances for nearly my whole life.
Me too and his comic strips and tv apperances are the best!
he’s great!
Good thing this video wasn’t posted on Mondays cuz we all know Garfield feels about Mondays lol
Yass I love that!!
Tell me about it, unlike fridays.
Garfield just hates mondays!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
My birthday was on Monday 😂
The Garfield specials I’ll always remember not only for Music’s vocal performances, but those great songs sung by Lou Rawls.
THANKS DAVEEEEE!!!!! If you know me, I was asking you to do Garfield for a LONGGGG time... and it was worth it the wait.
Great to hear it was worth the long wait!!! 😊😊
@@DaveLeeDownUnderAbsolutely!
@@DaveLeeDownUnder Can you send in the link for the Coffee Commercial?
My … frog no is it out yet
Present day Garfield meeting his older designed self in the comics was my first introduction to the concept of art evolution.
I’m so glad you’re finally doing an evolution video on Garfield at long last! One of my all time favourite characters ever! It doesn’t get any better than this.
Garfield and friends was the best Saturday morning cartoon other than muppet babies
Woo hoo!!!! There the thicc orange boi! Thank you Dave,Garfield is one of my family’s favorite cartoon mascots of all time so seeing this means alot 🧡🖤🧡
Garfield is my favorite cat for years as well
I miss the late Lorenzo Music voice as Garfield. Nobody does it better!
Agreed, However, Frank Welker was a great stand-in.
Exactly. I don't think anyone has come close.
@@ricardocantoral7672 -- Nope.
Oh dave! You gave us so many great videos and to do one of our favorite fat cats who hate Mondays, it's such a joy to see! Thank you so much for this awesomeness!!! 💗
I've always been fascinated by how Garfield evolved over time
YESSS YOU DID GARFIELD!!!! Will you do the voice evolution soon?
I remember the Garfield show on Boomerang back in 2015 and 2016, and that particular series introduced me to Garfield, and I've grown to like him. I also saw Garfield and Friends on Hulu in 2017 and 2018 and then again on Boomerang some time around mid - or late 2021 then I've seen a good amount of Garfield originals on RUclips. Whenever I get the chance to see the Garfield movie. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna get some great enjoyment from this Lovable Sarcastic, Monday hating, lasagna loveing tabby cat.
also heard there's suppose to be a new Garfield cartoon coming to nickelodeon
I had no idea that Disney went as far as making actual footage. This is now my holy grail.
And coincidentally, the first 2 Garfield Live-action-CG Animation movies starring Bill Murray voiced as Garfield are also currently owned by Disney under 20th Century Studios label as well
That footage must be found and the songs too!
Wow, Finally, After all these years.
And Good timing too
Congratulations.
Big Garfield fan. I have all the books, countless collectables, and it was all kicked off at the age of 4 with my first Garfield plush. I loved the Saturday morning cartoons but never got into the "non-animated" movies. I like Garfield his strictly cartoon style.
Evolutions of these cartoons would be great:
Transformers (1984-2024)
The Smurfs (1958-2024)
My Little Pony (1982-2024)
Top Cat (1961-2024)
Snagglepuss (1962-2024)
The Powerpuff Girls (1995-2024)
Has he already done Thomas in friends? (1945-ongoing “kinda”)
The smurfs came out in the 80s
Garfield is a real iconic cartoon character, what with his love of lasagna & pizza, his rather interesting/amusing relationship with Odie, and his dislike of Mondays! I've loved watching his videos, reading his books etc., and long may he continue to keep us all entertained!😄😁🐱
I know it’s become formulaic these days. But the stuff from the 80s and 90s was incredible. Still rewatch the Christmas special every year. For me it’s right up there with the Charlie Brown Christmas Special.
I really liked the 90s cartoon with the segment on the farm.
Damn, I love these cartoon evolutions. These are the best videos!
Thank you! 😊
I’m a huge Garfield fan and there was some stuff in here that even I didn’t know about! Tremendous job, Dave!
Thank you, Josh! 😊
@@DaveLeeDownUnder You’re welcome! ☺️
Finally! Been waiting for this 1!
Growing up with so many Garfield projects was great, he's a great character!
My favorite Garfield media is Garfield and Friends.
Back when I was 6 years old, it was my kindergarten years; I had a DVD of the CGI Garfield movie. Every day after kindergarten, I ran to my room; I inserted the disc in the player, I had a ball with the movie. After a while, I also had Garfield: The Tale Of Two Kitties, the second movie. It felt like it was yesterday when I started watching the movie, it’s filled with nostalgia and memories.
Not only that Garfield is my favourite movie, but also I like the graphics, animation and the efforts to make the series/movie be a masterpiece. I imagined that they made Garfield 3.
Here’s the plot:
Garfield helped Jon to get ready for his wedding ceremony, but it ends up with a comedic result. Jon was so rushed that he forgot to put his pants on.
“Garfield!” Jon cried. As Garfield tugged at the rope with a pail containing water. Jon lets out a cry of surprise and disbelief. “Garfield, you naughty boy!”
Garfield remained unfazed, a smirk on his face. “Sorry, Jon; I got to save ya from being married.” he said cockily. Jon, not having it, shouts a command, “Go sit with Odie, right now!”
Garfield rolled his eyes defiantly, he sat beside Odie, who is chasing his tail restlessly. “Oh great,” Garfield began sarcastically. “I have to deal with Odie?! While Jon is getting dressed for the wedding?!” he concluded, visibly irritated. Odie barks enthusiastically, his tail wagging. Garfield frustratedly shoved Odie away. Odie’s paws create a squeaking sound on the tiles. Odie persistently barks. “ARF! ARF!” Garfield yells, “SHUT UP!”
Odie insists on barking, before Garfield tosses a nearby cushion towards Odie, who is sent rolling across the floor. Garfield snickers mockingly. Jon crossed his arms before sternly giving Garfield a ultimatum, “If you don’t behave yourself, you’re grounded from lasagna all day!” Garfield continued to be defiant, flicking his tail, feigning innocence. Jon exclaims, “That’s it! No lasagna!” Garfield shrugged, defiantly stormed off.
“Are you okay, Odie?” Asked Jon, a visible sign of concern on his face. Odie pants and barks. “That’s my good boy!” and he lets out a affectionate laugh. Garfield scoffs scornfully as his paws firmly plant on the floor. “This is a insult to my pet-ship.” Garfield says, creating a pun on his role as Jon’s pet.
After the comedic preparation for Jon’s wedding, the limousine arrives with Liz wearing her bride dress. Liz gracefully walked through the aisle with the waiting Jon standing in the arch of love. “Hey Jon,” Liz said softly. “It’s a beautiful moment for us both.”
“Yeah.” Jon chuckled, hiding his anxiety through laughter. “Are you nervous?” Liz said curiously.
“No, no, I’m okay.” Jon said, attempting to downplay the tension in his heart. The priest walked to Jon and Liz, preparing to say his wedding speech.
“Are you ready to be a couple?” The priest asked the couple.
“Yes.” Jon replied, a proud smile on his face.
“Do you promise to remain loyal to each other?” Asked the priest. The both of them nodded in response to the priest’s question.
“Then, I pronounce Elizabeth as Elizabeth Arbuckle. You may kiss the bride.” Said the priest.
With that, Jon and Liz kiss each other, signalling that they were going to be married for eternity.
**A few weeks later…**
Liz was pregnant with Jon’s baby, Eric Arbuckle. Liz walked to Jon, a nervous expression on her face.
“Jon…” she began timidly. “There are something I should tell you.”
Jon, perplexed, asked, “What is it?”
“…I’m pregnant,” she announced. Jon was surprised, he never had a son before but he was happy for his wife all the way. “That’s fantastic!” Jon said excitedly. “I cannot wait to be a father!”
Garfield spat a piece of Lasagna and exclaimed, “BABY?!”
**TO BE CONTINUED**
Fun fact. Charles Schulz actually worked with Jim Davis in the marketing for Garfield, which hence explains why it got so famous. Despite this,Schulz privately hated the strip beating peanuts in popularity, and also thought the Garfield strips lacked nuance and depth.
Very interesting evolution Davey
I have not seen the Garfield movie yet, but I did quite hear audiences saying is fine, but that won't stop my determination because I do want to see the movie! I love Garfield! I've always loved CLASSIC cartoons, btw my favorite Garfield designs are from the 80s and 90s.
Lorenzo music will always be the best cartoon voice of garfield.
Who would of thought that the evolution of the art would evolved into Heathcliff
Well, Garfield has big "googly" eyes, while Heathcliff has those tiny black beady eyes.
Holy crap I did not know Garfield had a early design before 1978 😂
I love Garfield 🧡🖤
Who doesn’t because I do because I’m a fan of Garfield
Great video as always, Dave! :) Will You do Krazy Kat evolution someday?
I really remember that 1995 video game "Garfield Caught in the Act" because, unexpectedly, the animation on Garfield himself is CRAZY good! I urge anyone reading this to go check out any footage of that game, for some reason it has some of the best Garfield animation I've seen
The one special from The Garfield Show "Lion Queen" is very interesting combining and using elements from Disney's "The Jungle Book", "The Lion King" & DreamWorks "Madagascar" and their sequels with Garfield & Odie in the leading role.
In my opinion.
"There were no cats"
Heathcliff had been running for three years before Garfield even started
What about Fritz the cat?
Felix the cat and tom and jerry had comic strips also.
@@saturdaymorningfan3123 good point
@@RyanZacharkoFritz the Cat was X-rated!
@@hmsweet5227 yeah, so?
Thanks for another great video, Dave. What a pleasant surprise it was. My favourite Garfield design has to be the way he looked around 1984 when I first discovered and fell in love with the strip as an 11 year old. As a Halloween fanatic, my favourite piece of Garfield media has to be "Garfield's Halloween Adventure" aka "Garfield in Disguise". Mind you, I doubt there's really much more on the horizon for Garfield now and I think that's for the best. He's had his day.
Thanks as always! Sadly, may have to agree with that final sentiment.
I just realized that Garfield’s going to (seemingly) soon be half a century old…!
Do Next The Voice Evolution Of Garfield. 😊❤
It’s worth noting The Garfield Movie will be/ is a commercial success. With a modest budget of 60 million, it will make it’s money back at the theatre, already outpacing Furiosa. Not to mention all the money it will make on the secondary market as it makes the rounds on streaming.
Idk if it's Garfield it passes.
Good video for Garfield's cartoon evolution, dave lee. I'd been watching some of his animated films/series throughout 2000s to 2010s maybe?
I love the garfield show and garfield food
Why did Jim Davis think that every one can relate to cats instead of bugs?
Nice one, Dave. We have our own Garfield inside all of us. I even have some of his adventures, and had some games (if you all want to know about it, I can tell). I was introduced to Lou Rawls vocals thanks to Garfield’s TV Specials (and even have DVD, which featured some TV Specials, most of Garfield and Friends, and even a live-action duology. My personal favorites (in voices): Lorenzo Music, Frank WELKER and even, Bill Murray
Regardless about how Bill Murray felt about doing them, I love the two live-action Garfield movies. Watched them quite a lot as a kid.
I still think Murray only took the role because he was very unhappy that Lorenzo Music did the voice of his character, Peter Venkman, in The Real Ghostbusters. Which is a shame since, even though Dave Coulier did a decent enough Murray impression, Lorenzo just did a better job over all.
@@mightyfilm Well, what I remember the story going was that Murray thought that Joel Coen of the Coen brothers was the writer of the movie, only to find out that it was Joel Cohen, who’s resume was family-oriented movies.
@@benmalsky9834 I know that's the excuse he likes to give, but I don't buy it. Supposedly he was the reason Dave replaced Lorenzo as Venkman.
@@mightyfilm Short version, when Lorenzo Music was hired, he was told NOT to do an impression of Bill Murray. Then he was fired after Bill Murray complained that Music didn't sound anything like him.
Bill Murray watched The Real Ghostbusters one time and complained that cartoon Venkman sounded nothing like him, so Lorenzo Music was fired and replaced with Coulier.
But when they were auditioning, the voice actors were specifically instructed NOT to do impressions of the movie actors. It seems like there might've been some concern over likeness rights or something. For whatever reason, they did not want the characters to look or sound exactly like their movie counterparts.
They even went as far as not hiring Ernie Hudson when he auditioned, using Arsenio Hall instead.
FYI, the cast change coincides with a bunch of other detrimental changes to the show. So if you're watching the series in order, you can just stop when Venkman stops sounding like Garfield.
@@KasumiKenshirou ABC's idiotic recommendations are legendary when it comes to that series. I've heard all the stories between this and the show Reboot.
Friends are some you can open up to when you feel like your ready to flip
Garfield is my Childhood Hero
🐱
What if you meet him in real life
Coincidentally, both Paramount and Sony's Columbia Pictures (the producer and distributor behind The Garfield Movie 2024) was also the same company behind MGM/UA's remake of the original 1968 movie, Yours, Mine and Ours (2005 film version with Nickelodeon), which Garfield characters from PAWS, Inc., now officially acquired by Paramount Global via Nickelodeon division since 2019.
Not sure how this is a "coincidence" when these are two completely different movies.
The fourth one looks great
I remember watch The Garfield Show religiously as a kid the theme song still lives in my head rent free to this day! XD
I love Garfield so much. I read the strip every day. One of my favorite strips is from Nov. 21, 2021. I also like to watch Garfield and Friends.
Always love the attention to detail in these videos🔥
Thank you 🙏
Never had to pause so much in one of your videos. Lot of reading in this one

Thanks for Another Great One, Dave!
As a Child, I had a "Cool Cat" Garfield Comforter(Duvet) & Pillowcase🥰..I also lOve Lasagna & Hate Mondays, but I never knew the History!😂🐒
For someone who has seen The Garfield Movie earlier this week, I would give it a 6. It has its low, boring and dragged-out points, but it makes up for it with its funny, faithful and condensed story that's able to find a middle ground for general audiences and fans.
Yeah it enjoyable but kinda boring sadly. And I really do wish Chris Pratt was in less voiceover "work"...

I can’t wait to see his voice acting
Most of my experience with Garfield came from the TV specials and "Garfield and Friends" show, especially with the late, great Lorenzo Music giving the cat his iconic voice. I'd say "His 9 Lives" is my favorite of the specials just for all the different scenarios Garfield experienced, along with changing the art style for some of the segments.
I read that Sterling Holloway auditioned for Garfield before Lorenzo Music got the part.
I believe that’s true!
Garfield!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love how you branch out more into pop culture with the likes of the peanuts and Garfield
Wow that amazing with cartoon Evolution!!!❤❤
Thanks!!

That’s correct. But only the Pendleton Garfield strips are public domain.
