      With me, Mathias is LAST to play. I like to leave RUclips with the good feeling that I've learned something. Mathias' videos bring a confident feeling that I can walk out to my shop and build something useful from wood scraps, like a freakin' wooden bandsaw! ...or something just for fun, like one of his marble machines

    Today I'm working on my first ever woodworking project! I'm rebuilding part of my sister's bed that I broke the other day. I only have a few basic power tools like a circular saw that I've just got, and a drill and screwdriver that I stole from my father. I would like to thank Matthias for being one of my biggest inspirations. I'll keep improving my skills and I might be able to build this one myself some day. Matthias probably won't even read this, but that's fine.

    Seriously you are like the Albert Einstein of woodworking? I feel like I just got done watching Einstein invent and create his theory of Relativity....Well in this case Relativity would be your bandsaw creation!! To be able to get to your level of innovation and problem solving skills shown in this video of your bandsaw build. Would take someone like me an intermediate woodworker I feel like a lifetime to achieve!! You displayed some amazing skills in this build of your bandsaw creation from scratch!! I really do wish that one day in my woodworking career I can create as something as amazing and skillful as I just watched in this video! Thanks for taking the time to record, edit, and share this on RUclips! I learned a whole lot from watching a master like yourself put this bandsaw together, and so I just wanted to say Thank you! Lastly I would like to let you know that your videos like this are much appreciated!!

    I just downloaded the plans for Mattias' 20 inch bandsaw. Take my word for it: they are worth every penny. If not for his ideas I would never be able to afford a "real" bandsaw. I would be stuck with the old "three wheeler" Craftsman I have had for years. I'll be modifying as I go but the plans work!

    Incredibly creative mind! I notice when Matthias shows close ups of his builds that the plywood has a very high ply count which I’m sure contributes to dimensional stability. I wonder what grade or type of plywood he specs for his fabrications. The stuff that the big box stores and even some local lumber yards offer have fewer and thicker ply structures and are very prone to warping!

    Is there anyway to make dedicated fence, or do you just have to clamp a piece of wood down?

  • @Immolate62
    @Immolate62 7 лет назад

    Matthias - thanks for the opportunity to ask more questions!
    1) If plywood is insufficiently strong for the frame because of the perpendicular layers, why is it okay for the wheels, which bear the same amount of lateral tension? Is it because the turning of the wheels constantly shifts the pressure? Or is it because the wheels being only 20" are not subject to the same structural limitations as an elongated frame?
    2) What is the purpose of the "spring" wood slats in the top of the tensioner. They aren't serving any purpose that I can see that a solid and relatively inflexible piece wouldn't serve. Do the springs spread the pressure over a wider travel of the carriage bolt, effectively giving you added leverage on the tensioner?
    3) Why did you change the bolts on the upper and lower blade guide at the end, the ones holding the pieces of lignum vitae in place? What are those new bolts called? They aren't in the plan, so I'm sure they aren't necessary, but I'm curious.

    • @matthiaswandel
      @matthiaswandel  7 лет назад

      The wheels are not subject to bending forces. Also, the wheels get forces from all sides, so the perpendicular grain direction is highly advantageous.

    not a question about bandsaw, but thickness planer. when planing ends, as I run edge through jointer, the piece rocks as the work gets past halfway, it then has high point in middle, how do I avoid this. When I watch you run work through it looks so easy, but never when I copy your example. What am I doing wrong? thanks. no rush to answer of course.

    Master Matthias Wandel!
    Your saw design is very good.
    I love your videos about joinery and
    Designs of machines that you build.
    My grandfather was a great carpenter, a pity that I did not know him, when he was born he had already died, I only know him for the pieces he produced and that there are still some in the possession of the family, are well worked pieces of excellent quality.
    The more I inherited from him the taste of handling woods, I am buying tools to set up my workshop.

    Matthias, I built my bandsaw from plans that you supplied several years ago, and although I don't use it as much as you use yours, it has afforded me a good deal of pleasure.
    Have you had any experience with saw blades breaking at the weld? It has happened to me twice now, and on one occasion, the end of the blade came down through the triangle between the workpiece, my finger and my thumb, and gouged a lump out of the table. It shook me up a bit, but I wasn't hurt. On both occasions, the blades were fairly well used, but not enough to be dull, so long before the expected end of their lives.
    Do you have any recommendations to avoid this happening?

  • @allanperret8859
    @allanperret8859 7 лет назад

    So I have owned and used a variety of bandsaws over the last 40 years. They all had tilting tables, buts it a feature I seldom use. Wondering if you think there would be any additional advantages to designing / building homemade bandsaw with fixed table other than the obvious of simpler construction. Also it seems like in the few cases where I did need to make angled cuts on bandsaw I would leave table at 90° and make an angled jig to tilt the workpiece because I needed the angle both left and right, whereas bandsaw tables only tilt in one direction..

    • @PunkR0ckz09
      @PunkR0ckz09 7 лет назад

      if you need it to angle both left and right, you could put a vertical fence at the end of the tilting table, it would then create the opposite angle...
      i admit though, it would become way harder to control the part though, so maybe adding a sled to that vertical fence with hold downs would make it more versatile for you? (I am throwing at you some ideas, because I don't know what you would do with a table that tilts both ways that you couldnt do with only a single way, unless its really close to the wall or you can't pivot the bandsaw to use it both ways.)

    • @allanperret8859
      @allanperret8859 7 лет назад

      Stopped cuts on only one end of workpiece.

    Hey Matthias, what do you think of left handed bandsaw or for the lack of a better word backwards 'C' shaped bandsaw compared to the conventional 'C' shape? I'm in the middle of making your 20" bandsaw but ended up gluing up the frame to mirror the way it's supposed to be. I am left handed btw and the only issues I can think of is that the blade will need to be flipped inside out to match the downstroke cut of a bandsaw and the motor needs to be reversed which the motor I will be purchasing can be as well as it looking quite odd. I'm just curious if you have any thoughts on this after I discovered my mistake, thanks.

    • @matthiaswandel
      @matthiaswandel  7 лет назад

      For some cuts, sometimes I wish I had a left hand bandsaw (plus a right hand one, of course). If you are left handed, maybe it's the way to go. Fillping blades inside out is tricky, but I showed it in one of my videos cutting a log this bandsaw.

    Some of the components have been simplified since the first 16" Bandsaw. I am building that one now. just finished the upper wheel mount assembly yesterday. I think maybe I'll use the lower wheel mount you did for this one instead, because I didn't get the hole for the shaft to line up perfectly, and the hardwood I am using is very expensive. (Plus this is just a temporary shop, in a temporary country, in a temporary part of my life, so I am not going to spend too much money on tools.) No firewood anywhere in the middle of the desert in chile

      I saw a guy the other day who put a quarter inch bolt through a piece of plywood upside down, and then proceeded to cut a perfect circle in another piece of plywood after he'd drilled a hole in it by laying the two down on a table saw and slowly raising the blade as he rotated the workpiece. It looked a bit hair-brained, but it worked perfectly. He ended up with a precise 15" plywood circle with a 1/4" hole exactly in the center. Ideal for this I think, although in your case 16" and mine 20". Theory is the same.
      Saw Dusty was his RUclips moniker.

      I have no problem with making a circle, I made the wheels with a circle cutter jig I made for my router this time, but it could just as easily be done with just a jigsaw, because the wheels need to be trued up perfectly afterwards anyway, by turning it on it's own shaft. The part I had a problem with was the lower wheel mount block, which has a 1 inch hole drilled straight through it, and my 1 inch forstner bit is not long enough to reach all the way through..
      On the upper wheel mount, I used a 3/8" spade bit to complete the hole, only allowing the spur to poke out the other side, (my spade bits are the only bits I have that are long enough) and then drilling from the other side, with the hole lining up perfectly from both sides. But it didn't go that well for the lower block. I must have managed to start the spade-bit off center in the hole.
      -The way he did it on this saw, just seems like an easier way to do it, with a narrower block.
      :) I have made circles on the table saw the way you described before too, it's just a little bit sketchy. :)

    Great job Matthew what is the cost difference between buying a ready made bandsaw from the store or the cost of materials making your own

    Could you essentially adapt this to a large scale, flip it horizontally and turn it into a saw mill for logs? Just a thought

    This design is strong enough to create enough tension for minimal drift resawing with a 1 1/4" blade?

    So I purchased the 3 plan option to get the most out of the build. I use Shopsmith currently and looking for a larger bandsaw the 4.25 inch hight is not helping to resaw large logs to square stock. Wood is cheap and I can build this one in my spare time. I need that blade. where do you get it?

    • @matthiaswandel
      @matthiaswandel  6 лет назад

      Any place that sells bandsaw blades. Best to go for a supplier in your country to avoid expensive shipping and customs. I got mine at tufftooth.com (canada)

    When you pre drill a hole for a screw, what is your rule of thumb for size? Like, a 1/4" screw needs what size drill bit? I tend to either go too big or too small.

    • @Fiskekakemannen
      @Fiskekakemannen 7 лет назад

      I always hold the drill bit in front of the screw, if the shaft of the screw is hidden behind the drill bit, but the threads are completely visible, the drill bit will be perfectly sized

    • @matthiaswandel
      @matthiaswandel  7 лет назад

      That's what I do too. But it depends on the wood too. A big piece of softwood usually needs no pilot hole. But hardwoods need bigger pilot holes.

    mathias is this bandsaw design more for logs or you can just change the blade to a one with finner teeth and have like a one bandsaw for all types?
    also what's the estimated cost to build one?
    Thanks Mathias.

    • @Immolate62
      @Immolate62 7 лет назад

      You can change the blades, as Matthias does many times during the construction of the saw. He uses everything from a quarter inch, to a massive 1" sawmill blade, all 133" in length. The cost he states in the Q&A video is from $50 to $600, depending on how much junk you have laying around.
