I saw Vince at the Ohio State Fair in Columbus, Ohio. Vince’s Dad was a federal court judge in Columbus. He died 2 weeks before the show. We thought Vince would cancel, but he didn’t. His last song was “Go Rest High On The Mountain “. He broke down crying after about 30 seconds into the song. Everyone stood and finished singing the song for him while he stood on stage and cried. We all left the show crying.
Lou, i don't suppose there's a video of it, huh? I'm a born-Buckeye from Columbus! we're goofy, weird, loving & great people! I've watched the George Jones' funeral version! very emotional!
This was written about two special people in Vince's life. His brother and his brother in music Keith Whitley. You should definitely watch the version from George Jones's funeral. Probably the number one funeral song ever. The two with him were Patty Loveless and Ricky Skaggs. I could tell you were about ready to break down
Dwight Yoakum sang "In the Garden" at Buck Owens' funeral. Alan Jackson sang "He Stopped Loving Her Today" at George Jones' funeral, too. Songs not quite as tear jerking as "Go Rest High...," but still pretty sad & sung with sadness. Just saw Gill, et al (?), sang "Go Rest High..." then, too! Cheers!
This song is so special because it has helped so many people grieving a loved one. EVERYONE has experienced the loss of a loved one, so this song is universal!!!
"You're no stranger to the rain..." Vince started writing this when Keith Whitley died of acute alcohol poisoning and "finished" when his brother died. However, he did not feel it was complete and in 2020 completed the song. The lyrics to the new verse are as follows: "You're safely home in the arms of Jesus / Eternal life, my brother's found / The day will come I know I'll see him / In that sacred place, on that holy ground." He fought his way through this song with the help from Patty Loveless at George Jones', aka Possum, funeral where other stars stood to support him. That version is very hard to watch.

First time here... These guys are more than just country music artists. They all 3 are more Bluegrass as well as country. Vince goes way back to rock n roll days ('70's). I know Ricky's big bluegrass guy. And Patty began in the late '80's doing more mainstream country, but she's got Bluegrass in her DNA coming from Kentucky! Lol! But all these people are craftsmen (and woman!). They are all excellent musicians and can play and sing with the best because they ARE the very best. I saw Patty on stage, not 15 ft away from me in '88 and I always knew she'd be special and I was right. This music is great because it's real. From the heart n soul and as real as it gets. Welcome to the family brother!! God bless!
Vince has the voice of an angel. And yes, this song hits emotional pangs that all human beings can relate to. I mean, is there any one of us who hasn't loved someone tortured by demons who has passed too early and just breaks our hearts in the process?
I attended a family service today for my 27 year old nephew who passed away January 3rd. He was a tormented young man who turned to drugs and alcohol. This song was played before his casket was closed for the final time. Damned near tore the heart right out of my chest. RIP Kyle 🙏 🕊 💜
This song is for my son Andrew. He was murdered December 10, 2017. It took me two years to be able to sing this for him in church. My heart is shattered. 😭😭😭😭😭😭💔💔💔💔. My beautiful son. The two singing with Vince are Patti Loveless and Ricky Skaggs. Although it brought back fresh memories, thank you for playing this.
Vince is accompanied by Patty Loveless-great singer and awesome Appalachian music singer and cousin to Loretta Lynn & Crystal Gayle, and Ricky Skaggs-tremendous bluegrass singer/musician. All three have extensive music catalogs. Thank you for sharing your reaction, loved it💖
Vince is also one of the greatest guitar players in the world. Mark Knopfler tried to recruit him to play in the rock band Dire Straits. He's with the Eagles now.
This was played at all my relatives funerals. It brings me to tears everytime. My family cemeteries are on top of mountains in WV. Closer to God we say and so beautiful.
When my father-in-law passed my wife was naturally extremely upset so I helped plan his funeral. He lived his whole life in the north Georgia (US) mountains and this song just seemed to fit his life perfectly, so I chose it. He died in 2009 and my wife still can't listen to the song without breaking down. And to be honest, neither can I.
This song means a lot to millions of people. And many people have requested to have this song played at a loved one's funeral. In my case, my mom planned her entire funeral while she was dying of cancer. Her old co-worker and a good friend sang this at my mother's funeral last November shortly after her diagnosis. Vince Gill was her favorite artist and this was her favorite song. Oddly enough whenever I hear the song I do not cry, I smile because when I hear it I know that we did well with remembering her. That is what this song is about remembering the loved ones that you have lost. As well as celebrating the life that they lived.
Patti Lovelace & Ricky Scaggs are both country legends in their own right!! You really should do Vince & Patti at George Jones's funeral!! We played it at my grandpa's funeral. Love & Miss you!! What can one say about Vince Gill.. True story... My nephew was installing a putting green that his wife was giving him as a present... Went by to see the job .He walked up to me and as I said nice to meet you Mr Gill, he quickly interrupted me and said with a smile just call me Vinnie... This is a real down to earth person... Oh and a great singer songwriter... I saw him sing this in New York at Carnegie Hall with Ricky Scaggs and instead of Patty Loveless, Allison Krauss did the harmony... While it was wonderful, it had a totally different vibe..
This is a great introduction to the immense talent that is Vince Gill. If I could offer a suggestion, you should check out I Still Believe In You. It is a great, trust me!
That lone violin, oh my...as mournful as bagpipes or a solitary harmonica. Such a treasure this song and Vince Gill. Have bought many records of his over the decades. I had to put my 16 y.o. doggie down two days ago, and I'm looking for a few songs to commemorate his life and love we had together. This song, along with Elvis', "I'm So Lonely, I Could Cry". In Texas, we bring our dogs home with us, if we have a yard to bury them. It's very comforting. Patty Loveless and Ricky Skaggs backup is supreme.
I think I fell in love with Vince’s voice the first time with “When I Called Your Name.” Most recently, his song about his wife, contemporary Christian singer, Amy Grant…”When My Amy Prays” reminded me of why I love his vocals/lyrics. Of course he’s also one of the best guitar players in country music, too.
While I understand why many think this is true it is not. "When I Called Your Name" was released on his 1990 album by the same title, he was married to his first wife at that time. He did not meet Amy Grant until about 1993 or 94. Amy was married at the time. The both eventually divorced in the late 90s and got married in 2000.
@@williamthomas7509 I don't understand what you're trying to say. I never said anything about the songs being related to his relationships. I'm aware of the timelines. I just happened to mention enjoying all these songs.

A true country/bluegrass singer...This song is about coal mining,, And those who died working in that hell for as long as you can breathe, and then you died from lung disease and you son does the same exact thing after you..,,, Patti Loveless' You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive .. The live version, it's very hard to hit the notes she does.. Great story song !!
When this song came out I was young and stupid. Little did I know that I would be mourning my Mom, my Dad and now my Sister who left me yesterday. I didn't know that my heart could possibly hurt this bad.
I had this song played at my husband's funeral almost 15 years ago and a lot of people must have had it played at loved one's funerals because I believe it has replaced "Amazing Grace" as the number one song to be requested at funerals. Of course the lyrics and the tune are beautiful but add to the mix Vince's remarkable voice and the stunning harmony provided by Patty Loveless and Ricky Skaggs and you pretty much are guaranteed that you will have a hit song.
this was my mom's favorite song, i've had it played a few times as a memorial to her, it breaks my heart to hear it, but makes me smile to remember her singing it
Along with Vince Gill is Patty Loveless and Ricky Skaggs. As you heard, their harmonies are to die for. I first heard this song at my God-Father’s funeral in 1999. No matter how many times or how many versions of this song I’ve heard, I usually end up in tears. It seems like this is a top choice for people to play at a loved one’s funeral. I’m so glad that you finally were able to get around to reacting to this beautiful song. If you get a chance, check out this song with Vince Gill singing at George Jones‘s funeral. It’s extremely emotional! Vince and George were very close friends.
This song is amazing and brings me to tears almost every time I hear it. I remember I saw Vince perform it at Carnegie Hall some years after he had released it and he had said a brief statement about the number of people that had written to him or told him how much it helped them through their times of grief, and he seemed genuinely shocked. But that is the kind of man Vince Gill is, very humble, very "almost shy", not looking for notice or fame from others. The first time I ever heard Vince's voice, that high pure tenor, on "When I Call Your Name" I fell in love with him and his voice instantly. He's an amazing singer, but is singing doesn't compare to his guitar playing, he is one of the best guitar players in the U.S. You've probably heard him on many Artists albums from Rock to Blues to Country to Christian and didn't even know it. He turned down an offer to join "Dire Straits" as their Guitarist, because he'd just signed his first Country Music label. When he got older and slowed down the Country thing, he joined the Eagles and played with them for a while. He is an amazing "strings" player and if you ever get the chance to check out a video and see his Guitar Collection....its incredible. So very glad you did this song. Oh and the other 2 who sang harmony with him are Ricky Scaggs and Patty Loveless. Thank you for the great reaction! Other great Vince songs to check out are, "Never New Lonely", "When I Call Your Name", "High Lonesome Sound", "I Still Believe In You" and "Whenever You Come Around".
Vince Gill was in the band Pure Prairie League in the early 70's. They sang "AMY". Some words I remember are "Amy what you wanta do, I think I'm in love with you, for a while maybe longer, if do".
Unlike you, I wasn't able to hold back tears. I lost my sister last May, after watching her suffer with kidney failure for 3 years. This is the first time I've heard this song and it truly moved me. Thank you for sharing this reaction with us...it was wonderful ! Music is supposed to move you so tears are allowed, even for an Englishman 😉❤.
This song will remain in me as long as I live on this world. It reminds me of that hope that million of us are waiting for. This world is so full of pain and sorrow.
Hello! I love Vince Gill's songs & voice. Thank you for doing that one. I knew you'd like his voice. He has many great songs - mostly from the 90s - and some 80s, I guess - I sent a bunch of his songs the 1st time I inundated you with those 2 long lists. Ha ha. My father died when I was 6 - and he was a Christian - but James Taylor's "Fire & Rain," is the song that always made me think of him. (I'm aware there are lines that are for adults, not father/daughter, but a lot of the song's lyrics & sound hit me with a case of the blues). This song reminds me of a friend. Glad you liked him!! Vince G. is married to Amy Grant (gospel/"popish" singer, probably heard of her) and I believe they still live in metro Atlanta, Georgia. There is one song I'll repeat from the list I gave you. I am pretty sure you got the songs in your "thingamabob." This song was a radio hit, but now it's kind of hard to find, have to scroll pretty far..."There Ain't No Future in the Past." Beautiful vocals, really high notes, pretty, melancholy song. It seems to be one of those songs that was popular but he's not known for that now so I guess it got dumped in the memory hole of YT. Thanks a lot and have a great week!
Home Free has a very beautiful version of this song with a video that has a military theme. They wanted to give justice to the amazing song but somehow not disrespect it. It's extremely emotional and respectful. The military themed video is a way to give honor to the original song but not take away any of the meaning, just show's how the pain and loss of loved one's can be felt in different circumstances. Vince Gill is a legend! Started out in pop, easy rock/ folk/ top 40 genres with a group called Pure Prairie League. An amazing singer/ songwriter/guitarist and multiple times over award winner! As other's have said please check out the funeral of country music great George Jones with Vince and Patty Loveless and (have tissues near!) but so very worth watching! Show's what kind of beautiful people they are and so very authentic the majority of country musicians and country people in general truly are! Thanks for your amazing reaction from a country girl in South Georgia,USA. Your South Georgia Home Free Home Fry Friend♥️😃🍟
The live version is the best. They sound exactly the same live. Vince Gill is also one HELL of a guitar player. Seriously, one hell of a guitar player and his voice is one of a kind.
Sang this at my best friends of 43 years funeral, he's buried on a mountain up in Tennessee Appalachian mountains, RIP Hoss well meet again one day and hunt and fish together again my brother.
This song has meant different things to me over the years. Now when I hear it, I feel joy. One day, I'll be there myself and I know that I'll have plenty waiting for me. What an adventure!
Great song. You should also check out Patti Loveless' You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive .. Patti is the female singer that adds to the harmonies on this song.
Vince Gill started writing this song in 1989 after the death of country singer Keith Whitley, but didn't finish it until after the death of his brother in 1993. Patty Loveless and Ricky Skaggs are singing harmony.
Love your reaction to this one, it is such a beautiful and rich song. This is the version that was played at my little brother's funeral, it was many years before I could listen to it again and I still only listen to it when some one I follow reacts to it.
Vince is one, if not the best, guitar/banjo pickers in country. He plays on many people’s songs. He’s been around forever & has an angelic tenor voice. He’s married to Amy Grant a famous Christian/country singer in her own right. While this was a beautiful, soulful song there are others that show case his voice/playing better. He has a very large catalog of work!: Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain, Will the Circle be Unbroken...so many.
I have loved Vince's angelic voice for decades. I got to see him with Suzie Bogis in the early 90s at Cheyenne Frontier Days - great show. Home Free did a gorgeous cover also.
Vince started to write this song when his friend Keith Whitley died then finished it when his brother died....never do I hear this song without thinking of my Dad...I lived in NC and my Dad was in Ohio ..I drove 12 hrs to get home and heard this song 3 times on my car radio on my way home to Ohio..anyone in the US knows how hard it is to get good radio stations when going state to state and this was in 2004..I figured it was a message to me..I think what are the chances of hearing it 3 times in 12 hours

My uncle who was like a big brother to me was killed in a coal mine accident ( a cave in ) and this eong came out that same week. I remember driving down the road and I had to pull over when I heard it for the first time. This past September, my best friend of 24 years died instantly and unexpected from a blood clot that noone knew she had. This song has helped me tremendously through both losses
You seem like a class act, and as someone who lives in the country musical capital of Nashville, TN, its nice to see the perspective of someone from England. I've seen several of your reactions and you seem to appreciate and understand good music. You got my sub.
Very powerful song by Vince, and even more powerful when you watch him do it live. This song is also covered by Home Free, and their video brings me to tears.
He has one of the most unique voices in the industry, and I loved him from the moment I heard "When I call your name" all those years ago, which remained my late husband's favorite song until he passed away. I heard Carrie Underwood do a gorgeous rendition of this song in honor of Vince and it made me cry it was sung so beautifully. Please check it out. She is unbelievable singing it
We played this at our father's funeral. He loved it. He lost his ten year cancer battle. But as he drew his last breath. He went with hands lifted worshiping the Lord. He hugged those who went before.
Im from Louisiana and to see you genuinely acknowledge the amazing one of a kind voice Vince has is so refreshing. My Grandma was over the moon for him and i remember her playing him all the time. Im 35 now and Vince to me is still the voice of an angel lol and best Male voice i have ever heard. Good job on your video keep them up. Look at Gary Levox next from rascall flatts. God bless the broken road.
Vince Gill's one of the nicest people around. I absolutely love his voice and have since the days he sang with Pure Prairie League. His wife Amy Grant, another Grammy winning singer, live near my hometown of Nashville, Tennessee and they are ambassadors for our city and its people Does this song not remind you of an old Irish or Scottish folk song? You can hear the roots of Appalachian bluegrass style music as they are directly related to their Irish and Scottish ancestors who settled in the Appalachian Mountains of the south. I strongly suggest you check out Vince Gill's song Let Me Love You Tonight. It's a little more upbeat and another good representation of what his music is like.
@ Karen Mother of Cats Great historical context. I live in Western N.C. mountains, near Blue Ridge Parkway; my family's ancestors are Scots-Irish and Welsh. Small world in so many ways; and music -- especially story telling country songs -- can bring all of us closer together. Vince Gill's voice is a treasure.
This holds a very special place in my heart. We played this song while we were carrying both of my parents caskets at their funerals from the herse to the grave.
This and "Daddy's Hands" are the 2 that I remember from my Papa's funeral. This was played at my Nanys graveside also but I think more of my daddy when I hear this. Daddy's Hands is another really great one.
I was raised on country music. Vince Gill has been one of my favorite country artists. I will always love the classic country sound, like this song. Thank you for doing this song.
The emotion he is able to translate is all powerful! Vince sang this in celebration of the great George Jones, upon his death. It was so heartfelt, not just from Vince, but Patty Loveless, and the entire country music audience! It's a must see, simply because it shows the heart, the love, and the heartache in celebration of a legend!
My daddy was older when I was born. He would tell me stories with tears in his eyes of ww2 he was in the battle of the bulge. And other stories RIP daddy. You were the best daddy ever!!!!!!
The first time I heard this song was when it was played at my little cousins funeral (he was not quite 11). Then, on my 3 hour drive home, it played on the radio. I couldn't believe it was playing, since I hadn't ever heard it before that day. I always think of my cousin when I hear it.

Hello Lynn how are you doing today
I had this song played at my husband's funeral almost 15 years ago and a lot of people must have had it played at loved one's funerals because I believe it has replaced "Amazing Grace" as the number one song to be requested at funerals. Of course the lyrics and the tune are beautiful but add to the mix Vince's remarkable voice and the stunning harmony provided by Patty Loveless and Ricky Skaggs and you pretty much are guaranteed that you will have a hit song.
Hello Maryann how are you doing today
this was my mom's favorite song, i've had it played a few times as a memorial to her, it breaks my heart to hear it, but makes me smile to remember her singing it
Along with Vince Gill is Patty Loveless and Ricky Skaggs.
Also great songs are "Look At Us", and "Loving You Makes Me A Better Man" from the movie "For Love Of The Game". Both beautiful songs!
Vince Gill is also a great musician.
Vince Gill is a
legend!
Hello Louise how are you doing today
The live version is the best. They sound exactly the same live. Vince Gill is also one HELL of a guitar player. Seriously, one hell of a guitar player and his voice is one of a kind.
You got that right bro
Sang this at my best friends of 43 years funeral, he's buried on a mountain up in Tennessee Appalachian mountains, RIP Hoss well meet again one day and hunt and fish together again my brother.
He wrote this song when his brother passed away. Beautiful every time I hear it.
It is the folk music of the land...indeed, the world.
Never ever get tired of this song played it over and over, over many many years...
This song has meant different things to me over the years. Now when I hear it, I feel joy. One day, I'll be there myself and I know that I'll have plenty waiting for me. What an adventure!
Perfection
Hello Peggy how are you doing today
This song means a lot to me. I lost my 36 year old son who passed away to cancer. It has given me some peace, but a mother's ❤ will always be broken..
So extremely beautiful and soulful with longing it touches your soul. Its the bittersweet meaning of the word when you lose someone.
Love your reaction to this one, it is such a beautiful and rich song. This is the version that was played at my little brother's funeral, it was many years before I could listen to it again and I still only listen to it when some one I follow reacts to it.
That was patty loveless and Ricky skaggs that sang with vince, both big stars in their own rite
Also he plays with the group The Eagles when needed for the member who passed away a few years ago.
Vince Gill is one of only two tenors whose voices I truly love. The other one is Mitch Grassi.
I'm a North Carolinian... My condolences, sending healing hugs your way
@@mamaflush9945 my dad has been gone 17 yrs and sometimes it seems like yesterday. This song is just so special to me. I'm in Ohio now but want to move back to NC. I really miss it there
My uncle who was like a big brother to me was killed in a coal mine accident ( a cave in )
and this eong came out that same week.
That song is played at so many funerals and memorials.
Very powerful song by Vince, and even more powerful when you watch him do it live. This song is also covered by Home Free, and their video brings me to tears.
100% agree, HF do it so well, as usual.
This is beautiful! I love Vince Gill's voice. Home Free did a beautiful cover of this.
Played this at my mums funeral back in August.
Absolute vocal brilliance bringing in Ricky and Patty.
Beautiful
My brother in law and his friend sang this at my dad's funeral. He was born in the mountains of TN. Perfect for him.
Written by a true great sung by an absolute legend thank you.
She is unbelievable singing it
One more, Vince is one of the Best Genuine people too! He told the Grand Ol Opry to wait so he could play with his daughter's first grade concert!
We played this at our father's funeral. He loved it. He lost his ten year cancer battle. But as he drew his last breath. He went with hands lifted worshiping the Lord. He hugged those who went before.
You should watch Vince & Patty Lovelace sing this at George Jones's funeral!!
Ricky Skaggs and Patty Loveless harmonize flawlessly with Vince on this song.
This song makes me miss my grandparents so much. Still can't help but cry a little.
This song is the second most requested song to be played at a funeral service. The first is Amazing Grace
RIP Mom. Coming up on 5 years since you left us and I still miss you so much every day 🙏🏽🥺💔
And that passion, my friend, is the reason I love country music soooo much. ❤️
His wife Amy Grant, another Grammy winning singer, live near my hometown of Nashville, Tennessee and they are ambassadors for our city and its people
Does this song not remind you of an old Irish or Scottish folk song? You can hear the roots of Appalachian bluegrass style music as they are directly related to their Irish and Scottish ancestors who settled in the Appalachian Mountains of the south.
I strongly suggest you check out Vince Gill's song Let Me Love You Tonight. It's a little more upbeat and another good representation of what his music is like.
@ Karen Mother of Cats
Great historical context. I live in Western N.C. mountains, near Blue Ridge Parkway; my family's ancestors are Scots-Irish and Welsh.
Small world in so many ways; and music -- especially story telling country songs -- can bring all of us closer together. Vince Gill's voice is a treasure.
I heard this song long time so pain full chills praise the poached 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️
every time i hear this, the tears start flowing.
This holds a very special place in my heart. We played this song while we were carrying both of my parents caskets at their funerals from the herse to the grave.
I am BLESSED that this is the music I was raised on! Thank you for embracing it and loving it as much as we do.❤️🤍💙🇺🇸
Vince is an amazing singer, songwriter, and musician
This is such a gorgeous song & to get to hear it sung by 3 legends is just a privilege.
I am crying so beautiful
I swear if this song doesn't bring a tear to your eye, well I don't want to be rude.......
Played this at my husband funeral! Hurts to still hear it! Love your spirit ❤️
Love this !!!!!!
This and "Daddy's Hands" are the 2 that I remember from my Papa's funeral. This was played at my Nanys graveside also but I think more of my daddy when I hear this. Daddy's Hands is another really great one.
Vince Gill is one of my favorite singers in Country music, and for me this is the most beautiful song he ever wrote.
Beautiful song it's about him losing his brother. It will make you cry.. if not your heart is made of stone.❤🙏🏻😇
Vince is my favorite!
I'm loving your reactions and comments to Vince Gill singing ( Go Rest High on That Mountain)❤❤😢❤❤
The other two singers were Patty Loveless and Ricky Scaggs.
I've seen several covers of this and all done well, but nobody can sing this, Vince Gills song, better than he, himself. Thank you for your pure reaction. ❤
I love this song but when I call your name is my fave Vince song! 💕💕💕
I had this sung at my brother's funeral.
