  • Watch me facet one of the worlds most brilliantly coloured natural gems. Santa Ana Madeira citrine is one of the most valuable citrines, displaying an intensely saturated red-orange to red-brown colour. Gemstones with highly saturated yellow, orange and reddish tones are considered to be the most valuable. I'm a Australian gem cutter, and I'm using a Australian faceting machine called a "Facetstar" to cut my gemstones with. Please like and subscribe and leave comments. There will be more videos to come. Take Care.

    Excellent video, Cliff. That color & clarity is amazing.
    I like that you mentioned that a rectangular cut is not ideal for a beginner. While you make it look simple in the video, it is not. I always recommend that beginners go through the initial learning steps with a Standard Round Brilliant.
    Great job mate!!!

      Thanks John. Elongated step cuts are not as easy as it looks. Ghost facets can be a issue when polishing. Regards Cliff

    I think it would be interesting for you to take a collection of your cut gems to a gem show, and have them appraised by an expert there. I believe I can speak for many of your followers, that we would be interested to hear how well your artwork could do in the trade. Best of luck to you and yours.

    This is so beautiful. I have never tried to cut a gem but am interested . What sort of costs are involved to get started?? When you are cutting your various gems they vary in hardness. Do you need different disks for this or is there a method to remove the gem material from imbedding in the disks.

    • @skynex97
      @skynex97 5 лет назад

      SB Miller i am interested too about the costs

    • @VintageTimeGems
      @VintageTimeGems  5 лет назад +2

      @@skynex97 I'd say the minimum is around $1000 US for a nice second hand machine. You can build up all the other stuff like discs, polishes, a few tools etc up slowly as you progress. That may cost another $500. So for $1500 US you should be able to start faceting.

      Vintage Time Interesting answer , thank you so much ! 👍 I was not expecting so much.. i am already into quite expensive hobbies like jewelry and leathercraft but stone cutting is quite something else 😉

    Absoluteley stunning display Cliff. Any chance you could give us an idea of the cost of the raw gemstones to the estimated value after the faceting? Anyways you are a true master of your craft, and enjoy very much your naration and work.

      To give you a idea of the price of the rough gems it cost me around $200 for 28 grams (1 oz) that is not a lot. You will lose more than half of that by faceting and grinding away unwanted material. The gem in this video measures 6X9 mm and weighs about 2.2 carats, which is a nice pendent size. About 15 hours to facet it, you would have to think it's worth $500 AU or around $400 US. I've never seen such a coloured gem in a jewelers shop. This gem is perfect. But I do this for a hobby, so it's always difficult to weigh up what it is worth.

    Why are gemstone cuts desinged the way they are? Someone told me that shapes like the iconic diamond shape make the gem look like glowing from inside. Is that true? Would you ever cut a gemstone (like the one in the video) in to a shape of a platonic solid (e.g. an icosahedron)?
    Thank you for your answers in advance and for your videos. :)

    • @VintageTimeGems
      @VintageTimeGems  5 лет назад

      I would facet the above shapes mentioned as such shapes would not refract light. It's the specific shapes and faceting angles that refract light.

    • @johncrumpley8702
      @johncrumpley8702 5 лет назад

      I agree with Cliff. Generally speaking, rectangular cuts are better for showing color, rather than sparkle.
