The All-New Edifier 1280DBs vs 1280DB: Unadvertised Differences

  • There are a at least 5 upgrades in the Edifier R1280DBs which are not advertised anywhere. They aren't listed on Edifier's website. They aren't mentioned in their Amazon listing. They aren't mentioned in the User Manual.
    All of these upgrades I'm talking about are quality of life upgrades. Fixing the things that were lacking with the existing platform. I think these upgrades are subtle but significant.
    A great example which I left out of the video is this. For the old model, you can't tell if the unit is turned on or not by simply looking at it. With this new model you can.
    I am not reviewing sound quality in this video. There are hundreds of videos about the R1280 series which should be sufficient. This video is highlighting the sort of stuff I do not see covered in other review videos.

    Thanks a lot! This is what I was actually looking for. I do not like the lighter grey finish of the db speakers. And this is the only reason which kept me from purchasing the 1280 model. As there are no reviews to mention that the dbs grey finish is darker. No information of the manufacturer's website either. Moreover in some reviews this light grey color of the db looks quite dark, which is very misleading. And you do not know what's what. What about the grills of the dbs? Are they also darker compared to the db?

My setup would be optical from TV to speakers and then two headphones to the speakers via bluetooth 5.0. If so, do the headphones need to be manufactured after the 5.0 bluetooth update or would any bluetooth headphones work? Thanks!

    I order the r1280Dbs to use with my 4K tv for watch movies, netflix , amazon, youtube and play music. I tried some soundbars but I don't like the sound because is not clear. I love clear and natural sound and hear all details in movies and music but I not sure if this spekers will do the job.
    - What do you think about it ? Is the sound clear? It worth it?
    - The speakers works well for movies, tv shows and music?
    - Did you see any difference sound quality between 1280db and 1280dbs ??
    I've checked some sound test betwen r1280db ( not dbs) and r1700bt and I love the sound in r1700bt but they don't have optical input thats why I ordered r1280dbs. Thank you

    • @HomeAwesomation
      @HomeAwesomation  3 года назад +7

      I think they sound is quite good.
      Mine are in my dining room and I use them primarily with my record player or my phone over bluetooth. I haven't tried them with television, I haven't used the optical input.
      I really wanted either the 1280db or dbs because unlike the 1700 these can pause bluetooth music and skip through tracks. I like to keep my phone away around the dinner table but I want to be able to control the music still.
      The 1700's might have been a better buy for the improved audio quality. They were severely discounted for Amazon Prime Days just a few days ago. They appear much better on paper but from the reviews it seems like they are marginally better. So who knows? Maybe I should have bought both and compared them.
      The reason I didn't get the 1700 is because you couldn't control the BT music from the remote. I thought it was stupid that they would have these differences between models. Anyway all "s" models do have the same bluetooth controls now so that's no longer an issue. But the r1700DBs costs quite a bit more than they used to.
      For sound quality I have spent hours flipping back and fourth between the 1280db and the 1280dbs and I'm annoyed to say they do sound different. There is a clear difference in how they sound. I still cannot decide which one sounds better. My girlfriend and my friend thinks the DBS sounds better. I think the DB sounds better most of the time and the DBS sounds better other times, depending on the song.
      It kind of pisses me off that they changed the audio profile quite frankly. They had a solid platform with a good track record. All they had to do was improve the non-audio features and it would have been a no brainer. Now I fear that some debate will be had about which sounds better.
      There are two reasons I can think of why they sound different. 1) The speakers have different specs (51hz vs 55hz). 2) There is a DSP on/off options on the DBS and maybe that means they also messed with the default sound profile.
      So that means maybe a hardware difference, maybe a software difference, maybe both.
      One experiment I tried was swapping passive speakers. I connected the 1280DBS left speaker to the DB and vice versa. I did this because if the difference in sound is due to the speaker drivers themselves then both pairings should sound the same. If the difference is due to the signal processing on the circuit board, then the DB and DBS should still sound different.
      I believe they sounded basically the same when I swapped passive speakers. So that means it isn't a circuit board thing it's a speaker driver thing.
      Having said all of this I am not qualified in anyway to actually measure this stuff. I would like to know what the pros think.

Combine that with that fact that no one really knew what the DBs was all about, it seemed to me like most people would get the much cheaper DB. I posted this video to show people that maybe they should spend the extra bucks.

    i do see you put the right speaker to your left and the left speaker to the right. I thought of doing that as well but can the speakers be set up that the right speaker plays the left channel and vice versa?

    • @HomeAwesomation
      @HomeAwesomation  2 года назад

      It doesn't have a switch to swap the left and right speaker. But for the analog inputs the solution is easy, all you have to do is swap the L and R cables.
      For bluetooth I guess I figured "oh well".
      I have a set of Mackie book shelf speakers which do have a switch on the back to swap L and R, however the switch itself has prematurely failed causing some annoying cut out if the switch isn't exactly where it needs to be.
      It would have been an excellent feature otherwise.
      For the Edifiers I made this choice because it was more important in my set up for the knobs to be easy to access.
      If I kept things proper the knobs would be up against the side of a cabinet.
      Come to think of it, this is a design flaw.
      Putting the knobs on the right side of the right speaker is stupid.
      If it's used as a book shelf speaker it will be against the inner wall of the book shelf.
      If it's used in a wide set up in a room then the knobs could be up against the wall itself.
      I don't get it, it seems like the right side of the left speaker would be been more practical across different situations.

      It works for a few things, for some buttons it does a completely different function. For others it does nothing at all.

    • @HomeAwesomation

      Not really well versed on my end here but I assume if you want a 4.1 set up, you would have one set of speakers for front left and right. One set of speakers for back left and right.
      And one subwoofer plugged into the sub out port on your motherboard, rather than using the sub output on the 1280dbs.
      The sub out on the PC, when playing true surround sound sources, would have an isolated digital channel for the sub. Using the sub out on the DBS would be an analog inference.

You mentioned about the new DSP mode on the DBs model. I really love my DB sound quality and don't that part taken away. If I keep the DSP mode off on the DBs, is the sound quality identical to the DB model? I'm hoping so.

    • @HomeAwesomation
      @HomeAwesomation  3 года назад +3

      It actually isn't the same. I mention that in the comments already and it was fresh in my head back then, so maybe worth scanning for that.
      With DSP off the DBs does not sound exactly like the DB. They both sound good and it was impossible for me to say which sounded better. They both sounded good but different. I was hoping, like you, that they would sound the same.
      I spent hours with the speakers right next to each other, continually switching back and forth. I even swapped the DB and DBs right speakers so I played them in every combination imaginable.
      I am not an audiophile. My purpose in doing this video was to call out some things I expect other reviewers will skip.
      I did have two other people listen to each set of speakers. Both of them said the dbs sounded better..
      That was the best conclusion I could come to with limited time and effort.
      I like the features better, and other people said they like the sound better. I'm not so sure if the sound is better, but that's enough for me to pick one set and move on.

      tough call. I've never heard a R1700 with my own ears. I was faced with this same dilemma though. It is quite a bit more expensive so that's why I ended up with the 1280.
      That one thing I like is the 1700 has dedicated channels for the tweeter and woofer (two channels for each speaker). Not sure how much of a difference that makes.
      If you don't care about the improvements to the remote control you might want to pick up last years model and save some money.
      I do like how the 1700 is angled up, once again not sure how much of a real difference that makes.
