- Corey Taylor answering the question "How was it working with Rick Rubin?" on the Dallas, TX stop of the "An Evening With Corey Taylor" tour at Trees.
Footage filmed by Dustin Sain
Corey could yell "ham sandwiches" and this crowd would lose their minds.
the moment the girl started to say that's right over and over while corey was talking, i felt like i was in church.
The thing is, Rick Rubin's style of Production(the one of today at least) is very subjective or polarizing, Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park LOVED working with Rick Rubin, but has gone on record to say that the reason why they did was because he (Rick Rubin) would only come in when absolutely necessary along with giving them advice here and there opting to teaching them certain teqniques and methods of production for them to do on their own rather than Rubin himself do it for them...hmmm...sounds pretty similar to Corey's experience right? the point i'm trying to make is that Mike Shinoda and Linkin Park loved working with Rick Rubin because they pretty much did most of the production by themselves, and were happy to do so because it gave them almost complete control of the album crafting process. What Corey Taylor describes is very much identical to that, only difference was that wasn’t what Slipknot was looking for from a producer, especially given Rick's reputation and how expensive his services are. I think the Rick Rubin of today would be better suited for the bigger and more established Artists/musicians of today who aren’t newbies when it comes crafting an album and are more in the phase of their career where they’re crafting their 4th or 5th album(who have a lot of money) and don't require much creative input with advice and direction being the real input/gain. Judging by what a lot of artists have had to say(Corey Taylor included) it seems like Rick Rubin would be a terrible choice for any new artist making an album for the 1st or 2nd time.
+Christopher De Freitas I like Rick Rubin, too. Californication and Death Magnetic are his best albums by far.
Rubin is pretty much the producer you want if you have complete confidence in your abilities and just want a second opinion every now and then. Slipknot's first two albums turned out great because they had an extremely hands on producer in Ross Robinson so I can see why Corey wasn't the biggest fan of how Rubin works.
Andy Benji spot on 👌🏻
So then why is he paid so much if he doesn’t contribute like other producers? “Oh he has a good reputation” is not an answer, you should get paid for what you put in, Hollywood is so full of shit
@@sandysores9381 why do pay 100k for a Patek Phillipe watch when you can buy a Timex for $50? they both tell the time don’t they? The simple answer would be Rick Rubin(or any producer with a rep like that) could be seen as luxury than a necessity. Yes you’ll have access to advantages you wouldn’t with other smaller producers, but on the bare principles they largely do the same thing.
That chick at the end.... Thats Right, Thats Right thats right thats riiiight! I swear i was waiting for a TESTIFY! at the end
Yeah, as though she knew anything about it.
@@sasca854 plot twist, that was shakira in the audience. she shoots dirrctly from the hip and we all know, her hips dont lie.
@@brapbrapbrapbrapbrapbrapbrap ..... that was bad
@@irregularhunterj8014 you broke my heart
@@brapbrapbrapbrapbrapbrapbrap actually, was kinda cute and clever... but still was bad
I hate this crowd so much that I just stopped missing live concerts.
The "That's right"-chick is the worst.
At least Corey isn't afraid to speak his mind and be honest about it. I don't claim to know him personally but from various interviews and shows, I think he's one of the few honest, talented and well spoken musicians. The fact that he's in Slipknot is irrelevant. You may not like Slipknot or any of his music but you've gotta give him credit.
That's right.
THAT'S RIIIIIGHT!!!
I consider Slipknot's third album their best effort yet. So either Rick Rubin actually does something great, and Corey doesn't realize it, or Slipknot does not need a producer.
they dont need one
or you're very wrong.
How about we test it? If Rick Rubin can produce Slipknots second biggest/best album to date. Then regardless of RRs technique or lack there of, we all need buy Rubin a beer.
Rick rubin and that mansion with the red-hot chili peppers and that house . Was epic.... The spirits invoked. On blood sugar sex magick is crazy
Rick Rubin's assistant will do great in G.I. Jane 2
*will smith gets up*
I was at this show and Corey was amazing. He said he wouldn't tell any lies in the QnA and gave his honest opinion. I would be pissed too if I paid a so called "Legend" of the industry a small fortune to produce my record and he shows up for only 45 minutes a week !?! Fuck that. Rubin has been producing records forever and done some amazing work BUT for the last 10 years or so he has been producing by leaving an assistant at the recording and showing up for minimal time.
That's right!
Vol 3 was the most technically consistent record the band has ever released. I don't understand Corey's disdain he seems to be the one to complain about everything these days not knocking him for it but Vol 3 by fact was Slipknot's best record and the best record of the 2000s.
Iowa was better though
Thats your opinion
He has since regretted saying what he said and openly apologized. The crowd here would have cheered or booed anything this guys was for or against. Especially the "That's right" lady, holy muzzle her quick batman.
corey talyor likes his own voice a lil too much.
Correct me if I’m wrong…but I think *that’s right*
So glad someone saw through his false front.
I think Rubin has a legitimate reason for his minimal involvement. If you're too involved in the production process, your brain gets used to the music. You lose the ability to impartially evaluate how well it works and how the audience will perceive it. The producer should be that impartial ear outside of the band. Obviously he has had some success, so whatever he does works, but I can definitely see why it would be off-putting to pay someone so much for so little involvement.
The only album Rubin's produced that I can comment on is Death Magnetic, and it is one of the worst sounding albums I've heard.
Maybe don't comment then
ok
Damn. I didn't know that. That seems odd coming from Rick Rubin. I wonder why. We all know he's a chill hippie type of guy but Corey made him sound like an ass. There's always 2 sides to a story and judging from comments, seems Corey wasn't all that good at the time so... I dunno. One of the favorite producers and one of my favorite vocalists to one of my favorite bands ever. I can't side with either of them.
That's right
I think that Rubin shold be there when he produce album all time like Ross did on first two albums!!
The fucking truth finally
In the google autobiography interview clown had a different approach on Rick Ruben saying that he understood the band and that he got band members to speak up and talk about the art
A guy who worked with him. And he's not the only one who complained about Rick
I want to know what that shit he was eating was. Corey definitely has some balls. Robin is like some kind of deity in the industry and who knows what the repercussions of his open criticism will be...
I'm sorry corey taylor. All my favorite bands have been produced by him.
OMG thats right!
Corey Taylor does a pretty good Louis CK show
I'm not the biggest Slipknot fan but i love Corey. Fuckin legend. I watched Metallica's "Making Of Death Magnetic" DVD when it came out years ago. It goes for right on 2 hours! Rubin makes an appearance TWICE for a total of about 30 seconds!! BOTH times he was laying on a fucking couch eating potato chips! He's fucking useless these days. That record sounded like fucking shit too. Apparently he's producing Sabbath's new record as well... fucking hell...
I don't care about Rick Rubin but the Vol 3 was very good album after all.
@Zan787 He's not shitting on the entire record. He's just dissatisfied with how the vocals turned out on that album. Thats what he said in this one interview I read recently.
I've hated Rick Rubin ever since Minutes to Midnight.
right on!
Corey Taylor for President!
Good for you Corey Taylor. For a while now I've had a problem with Rick Rubin so-called production. Culminating with Metallica's Death Magnetic album which was the beginning of a step in the right direction for them but the production was absolutely flat muted. I could not believe it. I'm sure he charges an arm and a leg too for his "service ".
I don't know if you guys are familiar with a guy named Steve Albini. Who produced Nirvana In Utero record and he produced three or four albums for neurosis and I love the production on those albums. Just a suggestion
I think you’re thinking of Butch Albino
@IXIPestilenceIXI lol I came onto this video from UG expecting that exact comment.
I don't really respect spilknot but now i sure respect Corey.
the assistent that can't grow any hair... that reminds me a lot of the Darjeeling limited !
He should've been like:
"Whatdoyoumean by that Idonunderstand the question give it to me get whatthehell youretalking about Idonunderstandthehellyouresayin!"
I wonder what Corey Taylor’s opinion is on this? Oh, wait...
Hallelujah. Preach it. Thank ye' Jesus. Oh Lawd.
He's the proud successor of the old Dave Mustaine I guess. He has been ranting abt random shit for a while now
That was probably spirulina
Corey looks like a philosophy student lol
@ScotteGreen this was a question section during the show. and im pretty sure he'd know rick rubin better than you.
What I got from this is that Rubin would come in and do what a producer is supposed to do...
He destroyed the Cult with the horrible production of Electric, Metallica's Death Magnetic is abysmal as far as production is concerned. Californication is sterile and clips. He is very overrated. His "productions" are pretty much the raw captured band recording, after that he can either fuck it up or leave it as it sounds, both involving very minimal work. This does not make him a good producer.
Everything Rubin himself (just him) has worked on since like, 2000 or so has been shit. Stuff him, Greg Fidelman, and Andrew Scheps into a room together though, and you get the end of the world. Those three together are like the dream team of music production, except they're the exact opposite of that. Everything they touch is ruined.
Hey Corey Taylor, You're not Henry Rollins. Stop trying to do the stand up/spoken word thing. Maybe your personal experience with Rick Ruben wasn't what you "expected," but he is still the greatest Producer of all time.
Putting his name on someone else's hard work. Yes its an amazing album. Not there best. Iowa is far better. But it is amazing because of Slipknot' s talent and hard work. Not Rubin's.
j-lo sized but hahahhaa
annoying crowd.
So either he's joking around and taking advantage of a gullible crowd, or he doesn't know what the fuck is going on.
Rick Rubin shouldn't be working with bands like Slipnot anyway lol fuck them.. I don't blame him for only showing up 45 mins a week
See at this point in time in slipknots career Rick rubin wasn't needed though rubin is the king at making comeback albums.
Why do Americans hoop, holler and whoop to everything?
Corey says this but me being a fan of slipknot, that was the last album that I Iiked and I won't listen to any of their newer stuff.. I loved those first 3 albums slipknot and Corey Taylor produced.. the rest is all garbage..
@cutepoison98 - yeah, what the hell was with her? what was she there? lol. "I'm going to agree with this guy because it will make him like me!"
Rick Rubin is a legend, who's this guy?
Cory Taylor aint shit.
rick put slipnutz on the map. now he wants to stand up there and bad mouth rick? zero respect.
@@jasonpeck9100 Slipknot put Slipknot on the map. Lol Rick Rubin came in after they were already beyond huge. He was trying to get some of that fame.
@zippyzee That chick was about 20ft away from me on the balcony. Go to the last Q&A question about Slipknot in 2012...you will want to punch her in the teeth for yelling "Corey!! Corey!!! Corey!! What inspired you to write Xmas!?!?!?" over and over.
This interview was the beginning of my decline in respect for Corey Taylor. An idiot who never really was much of anything beyond skin behind a mask.
This is not an interview and Rick Rubin is a hack who lets talented people do the work on songwriting, production and engineering and he just says if he likes it or not.
Now what does he have to say about the "early life" section of Rubin?
Rick Rubin is Jewish, what do you expect...
Knut Knutsson you're a fucking idiot.
Allahu Akbar to u as well brother Knutsson!
Rick Rubin is black tho
Don’t be racist. Rick Rubin is Korean.
Dont be an antisemitic fckhead
That's right.
