    Did they call it "STD" because once you get it, you'll never be able to get rid of it?

    I've owned two of these Streamer Standard 4-strings-as well as three other Warwicks over the past 25 years (Thumb, Corvette FNA Jazzman, Fortress)-and have insomnia tonight, so maybe I can shed some light on them for the commenters (and poster).
    Warwick built these-in Germany, this was before the Rock Bass offshore offerings-as an entry model to their lineup. The idea was to have the same feel of the exceptional wenge necks on their expensive basses, but with a simple passive circuit, bridge, and other hardware, and non-exotic body wood. BTW, that body isn't "laminated" ... it's Southern Yellow Pine, AKA Carolina Pine, or as Warwick calls it, "Carolena." It's a relatively hard variety of pine that can have fairly wide grain patterns, and-though some might not like the look of it-it is also extremely light in weight. The first Streamer Standard I had weighed 6.8 pounds, which was about as much as the bridge alone weighed on my old T-40. The one I currently own weighs just over 7 ... and that's damn fine on a 5 hour gig, let me tell you. The circuit is simple, certainly, but the components were not "cheap." The simplicity was part of the design goal. The control cavity was routed to the same size as the higher-end models outfitted with full onboard electronics. They did this so they didn't have to change anything on the production line, just the wood blanks. I like that, because it was very efficient, which is synonymous with German. I also like it because one could easily modify the circuit by adding active EQ, and add a knob-farm if they wanted to ... without any routing needed. Also-and I am surprised to think that Dave didn't pick up on this-it makes a great stash as is. Funny that he did go on about glory holes though ... hmmmmm.
    Anywho, I never had any problems of any sort with the two Streamer Standards I have owned. Never broke the control cavity cover tabs, or lost the truss rod access cover. Never actually made much in the way of truss rod adjustments either, except if the string gauge changed from initial setup. The fact that Warwick chose the common English abbreviation for "standard" is unfortunate fodder for sophomoric humor, but that use predates the modern initialism for nastiness that has people snickering, FWIW ...
    So, all y'all haters can say what you want about how overrated Warwicks are and whatnot, it don't bother me a bit as I know better. But I tell you what: if you see one for sale for under $400 ... you'd best grab it. Undoubtedly be the only time in your life you paid someone cash, got an STD, and were happy about it.

      dead on. I have a Warwick STD as well. Couple things to note the Carolena wood is very soft and dent very easily. 2nd the output on the pickups are crap, but they sound good... this thing needs some active electronics to make it come to life.

      Hi. I own a 5 string STD and I’m very happy with it. Had it for years, never had a problem. I don’t think it has cheap materials. The sound is unique and it’s light in weight. The only drawback is the adjustable nut, which is sharp and can be uncomfortable when playing the first fret of the G string. Other than that, it’s a great bass. I put it as way superior to (IMHO) the over-hyped and completely over-valued Sterling Ray 34, which I also own.

    The Streamer STD was a Warwick attempt to make an affordable bass, it led to the Rockbass line. As for the video, it's easy to make something look bad that you want to look bad in your own video. I own Warwick and Fender, Warwick bury Fender for quality. Compare a Dolphin to a Precision, there is no comparison.

  • @joelgrigsby96
    @joelgrigsby96 8 лет назад +2

    It's an old Warwick, you can tell by the one piece bridge. I don't understand why it needs such a big cavity in it just for three pots and the output jack.

    • @Kickstandsup83
      @Kickstandsup83 8 лет назад +1

      Because all warwick basses have the same size access. Means they only need one router jig and one cover plate.

    • @joelgrigsby96

      +Jeff Hanshew That makes sense, one cnc router program for all basses so that they only have to make one rear access cover plate.

      You're not wrong at all. But I'd say they picked up their q.c. around 2008-09. My 09 $$ is a gut-buster. I have a vintage Fortress that scalps people. My mid-millennial runners aren't QUITE as high quality, but with a little elbow grease and luthier-intent, you can make beasts out of them.

    I've got problems with the "just-a-nut II" as well. That thing is razor sharp and if you make fast movements and bump up against it it's not really a comfortable experience. Luckily the new just-a-nut III is way better, round edges, no narrow pieces of plastic that can break off with every slight movement.

    Hmm, I have been playing bass for over 27 years and have just about played any brand you can think of and all I can say is this. If you dont like a Warwick, then that is your problem.....you lack ears for tone. I have had the most compliments when playing a Warwick. ( like "BEST tone I have ever heard!") I guess some of you haters have never done any serious recording....cause a Warwick is the best for recording and in fact best at live situations too. LMAO at fender guys who can never grow up and move on to actually REAL tone and play a Warwick. Even the cheapo China made Rockbasses play and sound better than any over-priced fender. I had that exact bass before...it is an ovankol neck, wenge fretboard (With Brass bell frets that NEVER wear out) and a carolena body. WHy didn't you play the bass Dave? if you would have, you would have heard every note bounce off the neck unlike anything you have ever played before.

    • @CordScott
      @CordScott 6 лет назад

      Amen, and I'm even a fender owner. I've never played any fender (I own a couple) that plays as well as a Warwick. If you are like, and really like low, light action like I do, then there is no comparison so between the two. To remove ambiguity, what I mean by low action is 4/64 or less on every string with no buzz and .010 relief. Most fenders I've owned just won't do it, even with tons of fret work. Plus they won't let go of their (fender) 1969 9.5 radius neck....
      Plus Dave tends to set action kinda high for my taste so you lose some of the advantage of the Warwick.

    • @pCeLobster

      27 years - well 28 now surely - to reach the sort of comically binary, "my dad could beat up your dad" opinion that normally comes from high school kids. Warwick basses are great, sure. They're made by robots like one of Tony Stark's suits. If you want to pay $4k for something that's 95% machine built then do it. Most of what you pay is going toward their insane artist program, so they can give Lee Sklar another $10k Star bass for free and keep him far away from Dingwall. Personally I call that "overpriced". Not to mention the mid-tier stock pickups and preamps they use. $1499 for a USA P bass seems pretty reasonable by comparison. I've been around the block with Warwick and came back to Fender because although they're not perfect, there's an honesty and authenticity to the sound that MEC preamps and wenge necks apparently don't produce. So I think you can ease up a bit. Warwick are just fine without you making cringey diatribes in RUclips comments, I guarantee you.

    • @CordScott
      @CordScott 6 лет назад +1

      So you think Fenders are "hand made"?? Their bodies are cut by machines just any other bass (including expense Sadwosky and Lakland's). If you think you are getting "hand made" bass for under 2k (like a Fender American Pro) you're dead wrong. If you can offer any evidence to the contrary, other than their "hand made original" sticker, please do so. They are among the most mass produced instruments on the planet. My fenders are pretty good basses, but the fretwork was awful, and I don't for their stock pickups at all. Plus I had to shim the neck on my brand new American Standard Jazz to get the action to a decent place.

    for anyone who cares this is quite an old one - there have been a lot of improvements to the instruments since then - probably late 90s
    - nuts are now made of brass or Tedur - no achy-breaky plastik parts, no sharp edges but the same adjustablility
    - electronic compartment covers are now made of aluminum with a wood veneer on top that matches the body - no wood screws but machine bolts hold it in place - the cover is
    - electronic parts are now some of the highest grade in the industry - MEC like the pickups - they play every whistle from stacked + push pull including balance to whatever you desire...
    - bridges are now made from brass again - 3d adjustability - sunk into the body - 2-piece design
    body wood is Carolena - a kind of pine, light but also soft, makes for a great vintage sound
    the laminations back then were kinda funny back then though

      Lynx N'Krügl this was their first try to make a budget Warwick. After this one, they started the Rockbass brand. Rockbass is not made in Germany, this one was. They were making higher end basses at the same time.

    This bass is wired just exactly the way my Fender 1990 EP90 P/J bass is and same capacitor. Your right, you cannot get cheaper components anywhere! It's sickening when you look at the price of the bass new. The whole bass is around $10 in wood and plastic and $25 for the pick ups trade price! But all the makers do it to some extent. Just some more than others! Thanks Dave!

    Yeah Dave that's one of their cheaper models. Though the things you didn't like are still on the expensive ones haha. I always loved that electronics access compartment. In fact, I liked it so much, I got one put into my custom bass from Chris Larkin. It's just better access to the battery than the crappy little tiny compartment that you usually have for the battery and means you don't have to unscrew the thing if you need to solder something. Really handy.

  • @offbeatbassgear

    Active pickups sometimes get a bad rap just based on the generally ridiculous accessibility some battery compartments have. Another issue is the general weakness of the battery covers provided with active basses, which is a problem that I don't really understand, as I've seen this on many basses, including several basses that I have with active electronics. The battery needs to be easy to access and change and the cover and compartment needs to be pretty durable to address a lot of the weaknesses of active equipped basses.

  • @greyfoxzero

    Warwicks in general suffer from neck dive. I love the idea of a Warwick with is tone woods and decent electronics. I love the idea of an adjustable nut. However none of that matters if the neck just wants to drop to the floor on a strap or on my leg. Not all of them suffer this issue, however its deal breaker for most players. Man would I love a thumb bass without the neck dive.

    Although it's a neat idea if it's executed well, the adjustable nut on this five string looks pretty close to useless. If you're going to attempt to implement an idea like this, it needs to be something like the adjustable nut on an Alembic, which is machined out of brass, not stamped plastic. And the string break angle is really atrocious. I'm really surprised at how poorly the bass is designed

      +gasmaskboi19371945 no, the original post mate. I think they also look awsome. This is the cheaper version that isnt a Rockbass, but still looks awesome. I play a Corvette double buck 5er and the the tone is awesome. Mine is newer with a just-a-nut 3 that solves the issues mentioned on this model. Plus the 2 piece bridge is good design.

      Only "active" electric basses have the battery for the preamp. "Passive" ones don't need batteries, since they have no preamp in them.

    as anyone who has owned a German car from the 21st century can tell you, the Germans don't do electronics nearly as well as they think they do. Next time you look at a Warwick, do yourself a favor and buy a Schecter.
    If you must have the Streamer body shape, buy yourself a Washburn Taurus or a Spector.
    The Washburn is cheaper and has standard components you can work on or replace with readily available parts. The Spectors are just made better.

    This is NOT a real Warwick but just a kinda Rockbass line stuff. The real one is equipped totally differently. Does she say where she was produced? This peace of wood does not even look like a real Streamer. Authentic Warwicks are indeed extremely high quality instruments.

    The B-string wouldn't rattle if Warwick would either fit the correct gauge, or build their basses correctly and use a 35" scale neck like they should.

      That's my point. Look at that stupid truss-rod cover, with a hole in it so you can use the truss-rod. Normally the truss rod cover is there to prevent dust, and you take it off to access the truss rod- so why make a cover that you are supposed to take apart to take off just to get back to where you'd be with a normal truss rod cover.

      That's what I was thinking. WTF. Actually the controls are old school full sized pots with a dinky little tone cap. All I'd do is change out the tone cap for a Orange Drop or Emerson to get some good surface area for the electrons to swim around in. The pickups are made by the Microphone company. AEG. They also make great headphones as I recall. Germans= Sneaky quality
      Yeah "The Sound of Wood". And are we to believe that pine is the best sounding tonewood they could come up with?! I know it ain't pine, but it sure does look like it, don't it?

      It's insane to buy a cheap one. The used market is the same price or even cheaper for a real Warwick, than a crappy one. I got my Warwick streamer Jazzman for 700 euro, and I gutted the electronics and upgraded them to Seymour Duncan's and an Aguilar preamp, for much less than the cost of a new one Warwick(think it cost me 1100 after the upgrades, with labour, didn't install the stuff myself).

    Hmmm. I have owned this bass, the sam 5 string, i also owned 4 string American Jazz with maple neck. Playin bass since i was 15, i am 26 now. The cheapest Warwick guitar will eat the brains and intestent of any Fender ever made. Let me hear the hate Fender and Rickenbacher (wooden stick) peasants.

    • @ToniRubinic
      @ToniRubinic 7 лет назад

      Original Fender made olimpic white jazz bass with Thomastik flats on him. And it is 0 compared to Warwick. Its great bass but it costs too much, its not worth the money for 1300$ you can get Fender model hand made with any wood you like, bartolini/emg/sd/nortstrand pickups and the best bridge and tuners money can buy. Not worth the money.

    • @ToniRubinic
      @ToniRubinic 7 лет назад

      I havent owned rick but u played it, i like the feel but it has so many flaws its hard to consider it a professional instrument. Maybe it was when it was created but today you can choose whatever you like, and they havent made any improvements over time, same goes with Fender.

    • @StrayLion
      @StrayLion 7 лет назад

      I don't think that is a Chinese model. The Streamer Standard is an old model that eventually got adopted by Rockbass. It was never a high quality bass, but it was perhaps a mis-step in the company (*cough Fender Dimension* *cough Gibson Thunderbird* *cough the shitty years at music man*) Every company missteps. It's how they adapt and learn that makes them a strong company. Warwick's no different.
