My family doesn't count scores in scrabble either. We focus on making cool words and getting rid of tiles too. That scrabble board looks amazing. It's really interesting to learn about intersex. The element of consent, and lack of it, in the operations young intersex children are forced to have is very important, especially given the surgery's invasive nature. The lack of intersex awareness is a really big issue because the parents and children have a harder time finding alternative opinions to what their doctor says. Great video! Quite a few elements remind of stuff I learnt in my Auslan (Australian sign language) classes about the Deaf culture & community. Deaf children with hearing parents are often raised with an oralism approach which can be very harmful. It's important that everyone is aware of these issues, because you never know when it'll impact on your life, or the lives of people you're close to. Not just that, but also it does impact people, and those people are important and their voices should be heard, regardless of how close you are to them or not.

It's great that intersex people are becoming more well known and being represented (like in the MTV show, Faking It, where one of the main characters is intersex and 5 out of the the rest of the 6 main characters fall under the LGBT+ spectrum). The first Argentinian film I watched was called XXY, which was about an intersex teenager, and from there I began to learn about being intersex and I developed a love of Argentinian films :) I believe Malta passed a law recently & is the only country in the world world where there is a ban on operating on intersex babies unnecessarily, which is really good for a very religious country. Well, as far as I understood (I'm not intersex), not all intersex people are so sure about being included into the LGBTQ term/community. They feel that their special issues and forms of discrimination get lost between issues of sexual orientation and genderconcepts (generally or binary genderconcepts). In Germany there's also the problem that the term sexuality only means sexual orientation (in "Hetero- Homosexualität" for instance) or sexual activity but not sex - this is called "Geschlecht". For instance: "I'm a woman so my "Geschlecht" (sex) is female)". So in Gemany there is even more confusion about terminology especially among people who aren't informing themselves so deeply about intersex. They think intersexuality is just another new variation of sexual orientations. And I think it was +Hida Viloria , who said in one interview that intersex people are sometimes also afraid of being put under that LGBTQ label, because doctors might even be more inclined to operate on children to "prevent" intersex children from "becoming homosexuals" in their adulthood. (i.e. operations maybe having a homophobic background). I hope I got those points right, as I'm firstly not intersex myself and also english isn't my motherlanguage. So bear with me, if I might not have put everything fully right here. Maybe some intersex person can correct or add something if necessary.

To me it's totally surprising, that when I was in school 10 years ago we were taught a lot about the fact that there are people who are intersex, the different chromosom versions, how often intersex babys are born,... I never thought that my classes were that inclusive, but hearing more about the US education system really makes me appreaciate how much we heard about intersex and other less "mainstream" gender and sexuality expressions.

fuque yu Being intersex has nothing to do with how someone feels or identifies. It is biological. People who are intersex can have chromosomes other than XY or XX, such as XXY. They can also have a combination of male and female reproductive organs, such as having one ovary and one internal ovotestis (which contains ovary and testicle tissue),. as well as other possibilities. That's not a choice. That's natural, biological variation that many people refuse to accept as normal or simply don't understand.

No intersex person should change who they were born as. No Doctor should change a baby when the baby is born when it comes to female or male or both in one body. Intersex people are people and should have the freedom to be themselves just like anyone else. Parent's of an intersex baby should be more accepting of the human being their baby came out as and not change anything unless the baby's health is at risk.

Permanent cosmetic changes are for consenting people only! Infant boys, girls or intersex deserve to keep their whole body. Including their foreskin, and anything else that a doctor thinks shouldn't be there. Just leave babies alone for God's sake.
Just to get some of the dumb questions I have out of the way. Please feel free to chime in and educate me on the intersex community: 1. Do intersex people identify as male or female? I always worked under the assumption that some people born intersex embraced the duality of their physical body and so didn't feel bound to choose between female or male, However I've also heard that many people weren't given that choice as a child and were than raised one or the other.
1. i'm not intersex myself, but i have an intersex friend who is nonbinary. sex and gender don't (always) coincide. 2. again, i'm not intersex, but, as i said, sex and gender are not the same. like, for my friend, being intersex is an important part of their identity, but so is being nonbinary. so a person can identify strongly with their intersex identity and with their connection to maleness/femaleness/nonbinaryness/genderness. so if a person is intersex and identifies with both male and female traits, they might consider themself nonbinary, or bigender, or genderfluid, or whatever gender they want, in addition to their intersex identity. (and again i want to stress that i'm not intersex and this is just what i've gleaned from my friend.)

I too am intersex, my testis never matured from the fetal ovary stage during gestation. One of my ovotestis became malignant as an adult causing me to have many surgeries and extensive chemotherapy treatments. I often laugh at the idea that people try to apply rules to our gender expression when in fact we are moving from the center of human sexualities. The best explanation is I can tell what I am not. I am not a male nor was my body a female I'm just a community of one.
Where are the intersex males? Am a mid 20's guy I am constantly confused with a young girl because I look atypical to males my age and just generally speaking. I thought I looked completely normal but I realized in high school that friends noticed I don't look quite like they did. In college other students noticed that my body and face are feminine in appearance and art class drove those points home pretty hard but I didn't even notice until I learned about intersex conditions. My health issues are varied and my history includes genital surgery. My mother insists that I needed surgery to pee, but my birth stories (of which there are many different ones) always include me peeing on the nurse as soon as I came out of the womb. So why peeing became a problem later is a mystery to me as well as the excuse my parents made to leave their families and move to the middle of nowhere shortly after my birth. My scars don't look like they could be from a circumcision either and I had to do some digging to find out what those really look like. I have a penis and some pubic hair on my chest, belly and back, but I can't change my bone structure or my bodies propensity to distribute fat on my butt and thighs while almost none ends up on my gut. I've kept a health journal going back more than a year now to keep track of my increasingly worrisome issues and a disturbing patern of pain, headaches, fatigue, internal/external bleeding among other issues has come into focus. Are there *any men intersexed or not* suffering from any of those issues? Or am I alone in this group too?
Intersex men are a thing. Even if your doctor lied to your parents (that was a well used method back then) it should still be written in your records. I think you can request your full records from your current doctor.
Dear Variant, Are you able to find out if you are XX or XY? If you are in your 20's now, there must be old medical records somewhere that could let you know what procedures were done to you. Good luck, I am sorry you are having pain and problems.

I'm still pretty slim despite gaining about 15 pounds since posting this 8 years ago... though I also developed a small left boob while my right side is totally flat. It's not attractive and my chest is now adequately and evenly covered in hair. There are more pressing issues with my spine and with the discovery of new brain lesions those are more important to have checked out.

Just a thought, but I think maybe you first must decide what you feel you want to BE (a boy or a girl) and then you will learn who you are attracted to sexually.
Circumcision falls into this uncontested mutilation in my mind too. Here it is rife in our culture for the medical field having a religion of changing our bodies for no good reason but a belief in binary...black and white thinking and ownership of our bodies. Unconscious oppression in our culture. I’m identified as a cisgender woman because of body parts and legal marriage to a man. But I don’t identify with any of these labels. I’m just appearing as “this”...no label needed. I definitely stand for the wake up call to the medical world imposing this on the population that doesn’t match an “opinion” (not a fact) of what is normal. If you’re here and healthy...don’t tamper. Like the choice of abortion...let the individual be master of their bodily matters.
More likely PAIS rather than CAIS, because she looks kind of androgynous. It's not Swyer's (total gonadal dysgenesis), because they said near the beginning that she had internal testicles which were removed when she was a year old. With Swyer's, that person is born with neither testicles nor ovaries, but instead "streak gonads" (which are the remains of the tissue that failed to develop into testicles). Incidentally, conditions such as Swyer's syndrome and Complete Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome prove that a). the fetus will always develop as female by default, irrespective of genetics; and b) that it's the testicles and the hormones they produce that cause a genetically male fetus to develop as male, not the Y chromosome.

My scars don't look like they could be from a circumcision either and I had to do some digging to find out what those really look like.
I have a penis and some pubic hair on my chest, belly and back, but I can't change my bone structure or my bodies propensity to distribute fat on my butt and thighs while almost none ends up on my gut.
I've kept a health journal going back more than a year now to keep track of my increasingly worrisome issues and a disturbing patern of pain, headaches, fatigue, internal/external bleeding among other issues has come into focus.
Are there *any men intersexed or not* suffering from any of those issues? Or am I alone in this group too?
Intersex men are a thing. Even if your doctor lied to your parents (that was a well used method back then) it should still be written in your records. I think you can request your full records from your current doctor.

Dear Variant, Are you able to find out if you are XX or XY? If you are in your 20's now, there must be old medical records somewhere that could let you know what procedures were done to you. Good luck, I am sorry you are having pain and problems.

Not yet. My health issues don't warrant the need for karyotyping. Maybe someday I'll just pay to have the test done. But as a real need... I don't really need to know. Even with the strange issues and quasi-regular bleeding from, I still don't know where. I have filled out a bit, having a more masculine looking frame. At least when I'm naked, I can see it. I'm still pretty slim despite gaining about 15 pounds since posting this 8 years ago... though I also developed a small left boob while my right side is totally flat. It's not attractive and my chest is now adequately and evenly covered in hair. There are more pressing issues with my spine and with the discovery of new brain lesions those are more important to have checked out.

What does being gay mean when you're Intersex? If you're 2 genders, then it's like you're straight, but gay, too.
Just a thought, but I think maybe you first must decide what you feel you want to BE (a boy or a girl) and then you will learn who you are attracted to sexually.

Circumcision falls into this uncontested mutilation in my mind too. Here it is rife in our culture for the medical field having a religion of changing our bodies for no good reason but a belief in binary...black and white thinking and ownership of our bodies. Unconscious oppression in our culture.

I definitely stand for the wake up call to the medical world imposing this on the population that doesn’t match an “opinion” (not a fact) of what is normal. If you’re here and healthy...don’t tamper. Like the choice of abortion...let the individual be master of their bodily matters.

More likely PAIS rather than CAIS, because she looks kind of androgynous. It's not Swyer's (total gonadal dysgenesis), because they said near the beginning that she had internal testicles which were removed when she was a year old. With Swyer's, that person is born with neither testicles nor ovaries, but instead "streak gonads" (which are the remains of the tissue that failed to develop into testicles).
Incidentally, conditions such as Swyer's syndrome and Complete Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome prove that a). the fetus will always develop as female by default, irrespective of genetics; and b) that it's the testicles and the hormones they produce that cause a genetically male fetus to develop as male, not the Y chromosome.
