      I am disabled and I need to park close. People lay that line on me all the the time. The last time someone did she was with her (husband?) he was driving. I was really exhausted, had been driving around trying to find anyplace to park and this woman starts lay this line of crap on me. She finished, the guy smiled, I looked at her and said, "hey lady, fuck you!" That was not a response they expected. Especially not from someone, whose disability, they were used to taking advantage of.

  • @harleyj4387
    @harleyj4387 7 лет назад +41

    I hold a handicap placard and it’s not something I like to use but I’m not able to walk very far so I don’t have a lot of choices. If I could walk through a parking lot I’d much rather do so. I don’t have it because I’m too lazy to walk through a parking lot and I don’t feel entitled by having it. It is just a necessity unfortunately for me to use it. Im only 48 years old and I’ve had it for about 5 years and only within the last 3 years have I started using it almost everywhere I go unless I can find a close regular spot and then I leave the handicap spot available for others.
    I think it all comes down to respecting people with disabilities and catching the lazy people and those who are using them illegally. You can’t inherit a placard, you can’t gift it to your loved ones. If the handicap person isn’t in the vehicle then it should never be used. It’s really rather simple.

      I have one, too, for severe spinal arthritis. If the weather is good I try to park in a regular spot and walk. Exercise is good for me as long as I don't overdo it. However, if there's ice or snow around, all bets are off. Never mind the physical pain; it's too damned embarrassing to slip and land on my butt in front of everybody.

    • @gravelydon7072
      @gravelydon7072 5 лет назад +3

      I went a long time without even asking for one even though I could meet the requirements. Then 4 years ago my problem got out of hand for over a week. That changed my mind. At age 53 I was declared disabled by the State and Federal Gov'ts which was over 11 years ago. Two years ago, it flared up and ended up putting me in the hospital for 5 days. Just finished up with a month of physical therapy and still limping a little when going into a store but a lot more coming out. But often if I see someone else who needs the place more than I do, I won't hang mine on the mirror and just look for a close place to park. I do worry that one day, the nerves will fire at the wrong time putting me on the ground in the store. Going in for groceries, I always look for a cart to use for walking. Degenerative Disc Disease shows no outward signs ( except if you have scars from the surgery ), Osteoarthritis shows little on the outside, nor does spinal stenosis.

    I wish that the police would do this in Kentucky. I have to use a handicap permit when ever
    I go to the Dr's or grocery. I have been handicapped for over 40 years, I lost part of my leg in the service. I can't walk very far with my cane so I try to find a parking place close to the door. I drive around in circles waiting for a handicap parking place to become available. Almost every time I see the driver of one of the cars taking up the parking space the seem very mobile and able to use regular parking. sorry it doesn't work that way here in Kentucky. Handicapped parking permits only allow parking in handicap parking places if it is available and not taken by someone that DOES NOT have a permit. The problem here is that the police can't be bothered to enforce the parking laws.

      ddavod122 actually, I recall reading several years ago that in some places in southern california the fine was over $1000. Part of the problem is that even law enforcement has very little clue at times about the placcards.
      I recall years ago, my father had one as he was not ambulatory and had to use a wheelchair, and my uncle was visiting from back east who had been disabled for many years since he broke his back at work and had to get around with the use of a cane.
      He had a placcard issued by another state and I had checked with law enforcement to make sure they honored an out of state placcard.
      I took him fishing off of a pier and the parking lot had meters. We went for a short while, came back and I had a ticket for unexpired meter. (one does not pay for a meter with a placcard). I took it in to the police dept which issued it and showed it and told the sargeant at the desk my situation. He looked at the ticket and said, this is not for handicap parking its for expired meter. I stated but you do not pay for an expired meter with a placcard. I had told him that I thought maybe the officer didn't know they recognize out of state placcards. He said well if I had a calif one I should have used that one. I just shook my head and asked if he were willing to pay the fine for me as the placcard is issued to the PERSON and my father was not in the car at the time. LOL It was asounding, a sargeant didn't seem to have a clue as to the rights of placcard holders.

    I love it when I park in a handicap spot, put my plaque on my mirror and have someone looking at me like I don’t need one.
    See I look perfectly normal but what they don’t know is I have peripheral neuropathy in my feet which basically is severe nerve damage.
    They hurt 24/7! It never goes away. I’m Always in pain.
    But yet they think there’s nothing wrong with me. I’m 49 I’m not severely over weight, no oxygen usually no cast on either leg so I get dirty looks all the time. I should get myself a T Shirt that says YES I DO NEED A HANDICAPPED SPOT.
    SO STOP GIVING ME DIRTY LOOKS!!!
    My wife is 52 and she has one also. She has RA Rheumatoid Arthritis really bad, so again she looks fine you’d never know how much she hurts again 24/7. Some days are better than others but when it flares up she’s miserable and tries not to go out.
    People really shouldn’t judge others because they don’t know what others go through every day. BUT!!!
    These people using them because they’re just lazy is really sad. It’s just not right. When people like my wife and I need a spot that’s close we try to wait and hope someone moves. If not we suffer in pain. I broke my foot 2 weeks ago so I find it amusing that nobody gives me a second look when I get out with my brace on and have my crutches or knee scooter. Thank god the cast was removed last Friday. It was sooo bad wearing a car let me tell ya. It sucked.
    Now I just have a brace I can remove if my feet are on fire or freezing cold.
    I should just keep wearing the brace after my foot heals EGR I go to the store 😳 sorry for the long comment. I just need to get it out sometimes. Not that anyone is reading this long ass comment anyway lol God Bless to all and hope you stay healthy so you won’t need a handicapped plaque

    I saw a woman...a young woman..in full uniform of the food store that she worked at (Superstore)..pull into a spot next to mine..put up her special needs sign..and then RAN into to work. It was three minutes to five. I went to the store manager to complain...he did nothing!! I called the police ..where I live (in Canada) its not their job, but the store managers! I have to applaud your city for giving the punishment that is needed to help these people understand what they are doing to our most vulnerable citizens.

    I’ve been handicapped since birth and cannot exit a car without having the door fully open. In my local town, I struggle to park due to all of the Jaguars/Range Rovers/BMW’s parked in them. In the UK the large stores claim they take parking fraud serious but I’ve never witnessed any proof of this. I asked to see the local Tesco store manager (largest in the town) and asked him what his store was doing about this. His response......... nothing, nada, zilch, zero, not a Goddam thing. #Lipservice

    Many news station have tried to help by doing to this kind of show. Most all violators have the same disrespectful attitude. It’s a joke. Problem is little is it does little done. California making it even easier to get one is no shock whatsoever. The state that gives people rewards for being lazy. Also known as the entitlement state. Then again it’s the same all over the country. It’s totally amazing how rude and disrespectful so many US citizens have become. I’ve been on leg braces and crutches since 1952. I didn’t need the plaque until about 7 years ago because I moved well with crutches and parked in regular spaces. Times have changed and now they really help me. So many times I can find one and then see abusers in the spaces. I have respectfully ask a few with no plaque or plate why they do that and have received attitudes just like these people. They simply don’t care. So many today have the it’s all about me attitudes right or wrong. I don’t say anything any more because I’m tired of being cussed by them. I just walk the extra distance.

In my line of former work, no city, county, state, or federal agency would even think of hiring me. That is why the state and federal government agreed that I get a disability retirement. Bad part is, in case of a national emergency, I'd get EO 13603'd and have to go to work for the same ones who say I'm unfit to work. Because then they would be willing to take the risk that I might become crippled on the job. Just sitting at times is painful.

    My sister & husband were taking their 2 disabled children to the mall one day. They were both wheelchair bound, fully non-walkers, non- talkers, g-tube etc. They have a side wheelchair lift on their van and those spots with the lines in them, that's for the lifts. So my brother-in-law takes my neice inside the mall but my sister was still in the van with my nephew with the wheelchair lift still down in the appropriate spot, when this lady drives her car INTO THE LINED area and OVER THE LIFT. Since my sister couldnt leave my nephew in the van alone she speaks quickly to the woman asking for her insurance info etc. She's all sorry about it & nice & stuff, says of course, so my sister turns back inside the van to my nephew (she was dealing with changing his diaper) and the lady backs up, back over the lift again and TAKES OFF!! My sister called my bro-in-law, the called police, tried the mall's security footage but no luck, they couldn't capture the license plate or car on video. So the lift was totally broken and it took an hour for the cops etc to get the lift rigged back into the van well enough for them to drive away, but with the broken lift they had to manually lift my niece and nephew's wheelchairs with them in it into the van, then out again when they got home. At the time my nephew was 9 years old & my niece 12, I believe, the wheelchairs weighted over 100 lbs alone, not including the kids' weights . It cost them $500 deductible that they had to pay since they couldn't find the b**ch and weeks without the van with a sh***y replacement. I hope she got the worst karma in the world to bit her a** after that. So let this be a lesson to all: please, for the love of all that is holy,DON'T PARK IN THE DAMN AREAS WITH THE LINES!!! THOSE ARE NOT PARKING SPOTS. also, respectfully, please pay attention to parking within the spot lines. I had my niece once with the van at a store for a little shopping outing and when we got back to the van to go home someone had parked over the lines so I couldn't drop the lift out and we had to go back in the store to have an announcement made so the people could move their car. By the time they got around to coming out my niece was super aggregated and upset and she was a non-talker so it was hard to communicate with her to calm her down. (This was many years ago but I remember it like it was yesterday. She passed away at 14 years old in 2009. She was a beautiful soul.)

    I have a ligit placard AND plate that allows me to park in a handicapped spot *when I need to*. I have CHF and realize others have things worse than I so if it's a good day I don't take advantage of the privilege leaving the spot open for others.
    What pisses me off is the cheaters that take the space without a placard or a plate to the point that when I spot it I take a photo of the windshield of the vehicle showing no placard and the rear plate showing a standard plate and send it to the local police, they have no patience for these criminals.
    My suggestion is -
    Do away with the placards and require only a handicapped plate, it's more difficult to switch out.
    Make a violation a federal felony, no bail and punishable with a minimum of 5 years in prison.
    The violator must pay a $5000 fine and court costs.
    The violator must relinquish ownership of the vehicle and any future driving privileges.

      I like my placard. If I had a handicap plate and my car broke down for a very long time, I can't swap the plate to a friends or relatives car. They just need to raise the fine steeper so people wouldn't do what they do with the placards or cars with handicap plates.

    • @califguy5344
      @califguy5344 7 лет назад +1

      46619TAB, like you, I only used the handicap spot when needed, until my condition got much worse and now I need to use that spot much more often. The problem with issuing the plate without a placard are two fold. 1. If you are given a ride by someone, family member or whatever, and using their car, you won't be able to take advantage of the handicap spot and if you must walk any distance, it can be a problem.
      Secondly, what if another family member uses the car which has the plate? They might just decide its easier to just park in a handicap spot even with you not there. Or thirdly, if you have several cars.. See where I am going?
      The placcard is a handy means of you being able to access the necessary parking no matter if you are in your own vehicle or someone elses.

    • @califguy5344
      @califguy5344 6 лет назад

      46619TAB I only have the handicap placcard and like you, only used it when absolutely necessary until my condition worsened and I need it all the time. However your suggestions on penalties are totally excessive. First of all, there have been times that I had forgotten to put my placcard up and fortunately never got a ticket.
      My brother, who is disabled himself and his wife has cancer forgot to put up either placcard one day and received a ticket. It was dismissed when he showed them that he did have placcards for both him and his wife.
      Just because it is not displayed doesn't mean that a truly handicapped person didn't forget to put it up but under your proposal, you would put that handicapped person in jail for being forgetful?

    • @anthonythorp7291
      @anthonythorp7291 6 лет назад

I do take into account the silent handicapped as I have breathing problems. So I try to be fair when observing. Please know if you are a violator that it can be very draining for people to have to run errands instead of bother others again for a favor.
