  • The vast majority of the approximately 500,000 accessible permits issued to Toronto-area residents are used properly. But investigators believe about 50,000 are used illegally by friends and relatives of the actual permit holders.

    I worked at the Las Vegas state mental hospital (Rawson Neal) and we had about 10 handicapped spaces near the main entrance. 5 days a week, all 10 were occupied by department supervisor's cars, each with those blue plastic permits on the rear-view mirror. None had the actual disabled plates. I was a mail courier there, and not one of these people was disabled. But all 10 were proud that "Dr. _______ (various dr.'s on staff) got me this pass as a favor." So basically legitimately handicapped patients were SOL, 24/7. Bravo, uppity union govt supervisors

      Maybe instead of giving them a ticket sending them to Jail and Limiting their Access. Put them in a Chair and Lock their Arms & Legs so they can't get up but make them have to do everything from a chair so they will really see what it is like with limited mobility. They would have to live life in a wheelchair not for one or two day's but at least 2-4 weeks or so. They will get a mark on their record stating that they missuses a ADA Parking Placard & may have to go through more steps to acquire one for themselves if they need one in the future. Maybe this will mean their license would be suspended for a period of time until they have had to take Public Transportation to show them that ti is not cool to take the right of someone who really is in need for the parking spot.

    People have no right to abuse passes! It only feeds the judgement about others who appear physically ok and have a pass such as myself. I'm 20 and have Multiple Sclerosis, so the pass helps me only on days Im simply too fatigued and weak. The stares and dirty looks I get are unreal. It's not like I enjoy parking there. 😕 I hope people gain some common sense and respect to let people park in handicap when they truly need to. They should be thankful they can walk the distance!

    I hate it when people abuse the system! Before my mother-in-law passed away she had an accessible parking permit. If I was driving her I would drop her off at the entrance of a building then drive to a parking space further away so that someone that actually needed the space could use it. She would sometimes get frustrated with me because she had to wait for me while I parked further away instead of using her permit to park close, but I would always just shrug my shoulders and tell her I need the exercise.

Instead I have to get the wheelchair out of my car, walk my husband with CP to the back of the car without damaging the next car to put him into the chair. Luckily he can walk to some degree but this is not ideal especially when it’s raining. Makes me so angry.

      If he's running around, lifting shopping in/out, etc then it's a cause for concern. 'Seeing' and seeing are two different things. There are criteria for accessible permits in Ontario. It's about MOBILITY. So if he's walking the 300m in 10 minutes or less without pain and/or use of a mobility device then there is a problem.Before I get some criticism - which I'm ignoring btw - I've had a permit in Ontario since 2003 so F-OFF.

    This is common practice by parking officers, if they see a accessible parking permit they just ignore it no matter how illegal the person is parking. You can see it around Mount Sinai hospital, UHN hospitals, the staff use their relatives permits and park on the street in a no parking zone all day. Even if you complain that they blocking traffic no one from the city will do anything.

    • @sonicretronym
      @sonicretronym 2 месяца назад

      Some of them may be legit but it’s definitely an issue. Remember many of those hospitals are there for many hours for treatment and when I worked at UHN I had a supervisor who brought their parent for dialysis several days a week, and to be able to drop them off and assist them they used the pass, but not for work.

  • @Mary-jh9up
    @Mary-jh9up 5 лет назад +3

    I completely agree that using handicap spaces when able bodied is illegal and just flat out wrong. I myself am a wheelchair user and must have the space on the side to get into it. Having said that, there are people with invisible disabilities. Like heart conditions that make it hard to walk far, neurological conditions that causes difficulty walking, chronic pain, seizures, just to name a few. So if anyone reads this comment just know to not judge a book by its cover. If you see someone who looks healthy using a spot, do not leave nasty notes or confront them about it. They might be going through a struggle you cannot see. Of course if they don't have a tag at all, that is a different story. But if they have a tag, they obviously went through a doctor and DMV to legally obtain it, so it's legitimate. Videos "outing" people for faking only perpetuate the stereotype that all disabilities are visible. Therefore, encouraging discrimination against the same people you are trying to protect.

    I am an amputee and I have a parking permit, so legally I am able to park in the blue zone. I usually don't because most of the time I do not need it.
    I do use it to park at metered parking for free, as well as time limit parking (thou I usually don't exceed the time limit).
    The only time I ever park in the blue is if, for some reason I can't wear my leg (I can drive an automatic with one foot) or if my leg is especially painful.
    Looking at me walking around, you wouldn't know I'm an amputee unless I'm wearing shorts. I have a slight limp, but not much. I've been challenged on it, but it's easy to show people my leg and they usually drop it. I don't mind that, so long as the person isn't overly rude.
    I feel the same way about cheaters of this system, because there are people who really do need those spaces.
    If you want to challenge someone you think is creating, don't just assume they are cheating. Just be polite and remember, you aren't parking enforcement. It's not your job to call these people out, besides, they might have a disability you can't readily see.

    • @amyseaden9069
      @amyseaden9069 4 месяца назад

      @@stratfordbaby no they can’t use it if they are parking to come visit you at least in Ontario Canada. They can use it if you are in the car and parking the car after driving you around. They can use the disability pass if they are driving you around but if they are visiting you as a disabled person they don’t qualify. The whole point of the pass is to be able to be able to park closer to an entrance when you have the disable person with you. Also allows people to save a little money on parking because most disabled people don’t have the option to ride their bike, walk long distances, use public transportation specifically for disabled people which can involve very long wait times and is often not dependable, etc. As soon as a side led person is no longer in the car it returns to a normal vehicle. The one exception would be if someone was waiting in their car to pick-up a disabled person but most would not wait in the disabled spot if there was only one spot left. If the police came by they can verify that you are actually waiting fir the disabled person and want to see that they are actually being picked up.

    Clearly, the authorities need to get a lot more strict about this shameful abuse. Fines should be doubled and permits confiscated that are expired, fraudulent, or “borrowed” from a friend or family member.

    I have sciatica pain and it difficulty to walk for long distance and long time but I don't have those disable permits since I don't see a need for a it cause I know physical activity is helping me more then anything. I learned from my doctor more I strengthen my core the less sciatica pain I will get. Honestly I dislike when people misuse the disable permits it prevent some one who need the spot from using it vs the guy who is to lazy to park somewhere else and too cheap!

    So they are claiming he's abusing the permit and parking the car without the permit holder, yet they only show footage of someone visiting the car and picking up the car... no footage of the guy actually parking using the permit...

    Abuse here is at shopping centers, drop off permit holder at door to store, then young son or grandson parks in an accessible spot, and sits there ubtil shecis done and he drives back to door to get her. There is no need to use accessuble spot for well bodied driver if he never leaves the car, he can sit way back in the lot until his "mom "calls she is ready for pickup. So these types and there are alot block accessible parkingvfor those of us whondrive ourselves and park and have to get into the store with cane, walker or wheelchair. So frustrating.

    People watching this video: Please don't harass people you suspect of being a "parking cheater". Lots of people have disabilities that are hard to see, and are harassed by people claiming they're not disabled. If you think someone is a cheat, just call the cops. Don't interfere yourself.

      This is so true. I've seen somebody get mad at my dad for parking in a accessible parking spot. Sure at a glance he looks fine but in reality? Both knees replaced, part of his hip replaced and has issues with his spine, hell just a few days ago his legs gave out on him while he was pushing himself too hard. At a glance though you'd never know the issues he has.

      Phil Dog, You would really call the cops over a parking spot? Someone else could be calling them because their house is being broken into and your gonna waste their time over a parking spot?

    • @danc1197
      @danc1197 5 лет назад +3

      Phil Dog. The permit belongs to only one person. If that person is not present than a permit used for free parking is illegal. The paper given with that blue window tag will have the disabled persons name and adress printed on it.

    OK...I understand the comments about invisible disabilities. I have a permit in Toronto and I have severe Arthritis in all my extremities. When I was still working, I used to use disabled parking. However, there were these 2 big black Dodge Trucks that often took up the only 2 spaces. The trucks were identical and the boxes on the trucks were full of tools. After seeing these trucks for weeks on end parking in the spots, I managed to catch them pull up one day. These 2 big burly workmen, got out of the trucks, went to the back and pulled out several tool boxes and a ladder and proceeded to carry them down the entire block to their work site. I complained 4 or 5 times to the city complaint line and NO ONE ever contacted me and the trucks continued to park in disabled spots for months. I was finally told by an anonymous city employee that the city really doesn't give a damn...

    The fine is too low considering how much money they have stolen from the public and government. Should be in millions to 10’s of millions, making sure no one would be doing that again.

    • @thomascarroll9556

      Tony Ka yes the fine should be tailored to their wealth, their car should be towed and impounded until the pay a fine of 20% of the cars book value, second offence car crushed.

    People that are disabled don’t have to be in the car. I have a handicap placard and I’m allowed to get out and take my walker and go to the store while whoever sits in the handicap spot. What am I supposed to just never get out of the car? That’s ridiculous.

    My roommate and I aren't in wheelchairs, but we both have a legal right to use these permits. My roommate drives, I don't. BOTH of our permits are in the car, in plain sight. Any police officer seeing us wobble up, me with my cane, she with her walker, would know. We have driven away from stores that have no available parking near the doors. We KNOW that people abuse the passes. We see perfectly fine people get out of these cars or stroll back. Yes, they may have a relative that they drive to and from doctor's appointments or to go shopping. But that doesn't mean that they should get carte blanche to have free parking all the time, or the right to the most accessible spots. Take the permits away, and ticket them.
