@AsThe3rdEye Do you mean the Four Pillars that was adopted from Portugal's successful drug program? The same program that actually forces drug users to go to rehab if they use in public or commit crimes while high? The same program that provides treatment and encourages users to quit instead of enabling them and providing them drugs funded by the taxpayers instead of these facilities to stay off the drugs? Yeah, I heard of it.
Decriminalization CAN work, but ONLY if it's done right. Canada's approach is nothing like Switzerland or Portugal. BC is focused on providing drugs with no treatment infrastructure whatsoever. No incentive to quit and no consequences for their actions. The same thing happened to Oregon and was a failure, just like BC.
In short...We didn't follow the recipe and are somehow surprised we baked a cake instead of a pie.
Thank God for those Swiss peeps, though. The only thing worse is when some smug, ignorant, know nothing know-it-all, radical lunatic that tells us to follow the science (except when it comes to biology) and starts spewing a bunch of shit from their mouths that they know nothing about while spamming the comments section with, "But Switzerland..."
Those people are the worst. Dare I say... Wacko. Especially that Prime Minister who wore blackface a bunch of times and invited a Nazi to the House of Commons. Total wacko.

As a former fentanyl addict who is just over 25 months clean let me tell I very possibly would not have gotten clean if I could get free dope at the time but more importantly the issue with this is that although it was good intentioned most of the actually streetside junkies (as opposed to those of us that worked n were not homeless) have taken this as a greenlight to do whatever they please.
Sadly much like most well intentioned policies as this a minority ruined it for the majority.
Nobody should be going to jail for being a drug addict or possessing drugs - but society at large doesn’t have to accept a cloud a meth smoke being blown in your face, being assaulted by paranoid addicts, and subjecting kids to it on the daily just getting the bus.
Bring back shame to drug addiction. That’s the only thing that got me out of that.

Poilievre has to be careful not to bite the hand that feeds him...
I live in downtown Toronto, where I've seen the growth of a more and more visible culture of public drug use. These people are now frequently seen outside of coffee shops and fast food establishments, city parks, and other public spaces. This is a diverse group, but one that often shares a sense of grievance and victim-hood. Some are native born Canadians, who have fallen on hard times, both economically and emotionally, and blame both the government and immigrants for their problems. Others are immigrants themselves. These are generally not the immigrants who came to work or study. Instead, many of them come from a privileged background in their country of origin. They lack both a work ethic and experience, as they did not need to work at home. They are often the troubled children of those families who could afford to pay the way to get them through the immigration system. These people are often also against immigration policy reform. They feel that they paid for the right to be here and allowing immigrants who didn't pay and can't afford to pay is "unfair", as it would allow in more of precisely those people who threaten their families' power at home. Ironically, what unites both of them is support for politicians like Poilievre. I would estimate that over two-thirds of them would even support a political leader like Trump. They genuinely seek an authoritarian leader, who would breakthrough all the gridlock and take control. One who would "fix" the system by insuring that "only those who _deserve_ it get a better life."
By raising the drug problem, Poilievre is playing with fire. Yes, the politicians' posturing is largely just a symbolic political game. But if enough "apolitical" people in the medical, criminology and social work fields start taking the problem seriously, if they start to receive funding and adopt policies that get at the causes and actually have a chance of making a real positive difference, then this political movement may end up eliminating a key pillar of its own base.

At this rate we'll evolve into Morlocks before we fix anything. At the root of the problem is our commodified survival...it leads to mass amounts of childhood trauma associated with addictions. There are infinite ways of approaching this problem, one way could be to create a simulator/video game for kids and adults to create solutions from a place where they feel safe and loved, getting paid a living wage to ensure a basic standard of living, all while achieving self actualization in the process. We could develop better life saving technologies sooner, control the weather sooner...it would be like a short cut up the Kardashev Scale.
