Super list! and it's great to hear all the points of view of dedicated Criterion fans! I have an oldie and a goodie--Night of the Hunter! Profound in so many ways! And it says so much about childhood, America, and Americans!
Love your excellent comments on the movies and agree with your assessments of them! Love that you got into older movies as well as the newer! So many ignore older movies. I will return !!!
I'll strongly second the recommendation for Romeo and Juliet. I had never seen it before and was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Shakespeare fans might also want to check out Roman Polanski's Macbeth and Orson Welles' Othello.
FYI: None of the Criterion sale videos applies toward a Premium Membership and they charged $6 shipping for the Olympic box set. I canceled my membership and got a refund after finding that out. Some things that are out of stock or not in 4K yet can sometimes be found on Amazon for the same price. Several things you mentioned were out of stock.
Interesting. I hope the titles you are looking for come back in stock at your location/online, Ken. The sale is still young so plenty of opportunity to pick up some solid titles. Enjoy the sale!
Parasite... I remember watching this at the firehouse (I'm a firefighter) back in 2021 and the entire crew had our jaws on the floor by the end of it. That's hard to do in our field 😂 Great video brother.
Nice choices. Recommendations I have are: Still Walking by Hirokazu Kore-eda. Gimme Shelter- Rolling Stones Documentary Black Narcissus by Powell and Pressburger The Sword of Doom- Kihachi Okamoto Two Lane Blacktop - Marty Helman Summer Hours - Oliver Assayas Boxsets John Cassevetes Five Films America Lost and Found- The BBC story
@@20thand21stMovies Paris Texas is another great choice from 1984 with Henry Dean Station and Dean Stockwell. That'll be on my next recommendations list.
such an awesome video. definitely getting a few of these. might make my own video because i need to gush about “to sleep with anger” in order to get more people to pick it up this summer haha! have a great one, my man.
This will be my first sale. As I’m visiting in the States. Very excited and I’m gonna pick up a region A player to bring back with me since the region free is too expensive
Great video! I totally agree with the WKW box set, that is a perfect boxset for the Summer time! One title I would recommend that was not mentioned in the video would be A Brighter Summer Day, perfect film for the Summer time!!! I will not be participating on this B&N sale but I will be ready for Criterions next flash sale!
Thank you, great list. It is helping me get back into watching film. Haven't seen Passion of Joan of Arc since it was released on DVD. You deserve a lot more subscribers.
💗Happy Summer, James and your loved ones. I am not surprised that I already have most of these recommendations in my collection because I listen to your advice all of the time. The only new one from this list will be "The Passion of Joan of Arc." Thank you once again and I look forward to all future postings.
Happy Summer to you as well, Prof Strangefinger! The Passion of Joan of Arc is a good one. Hope you enjoy the sale and glad to hear you enjoy the content here.
Those are some nice pickups, Jeff! To Die For and Anatomy of a Fall are both terrific. I too picked up Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid and look forward to seeing it. Enjoy your pickups!
Excellent Video! Just a quick camera tip. Because you had a picture with a face behind you, the camera got confused a few times and tried to focus on that face instead of your face. Auto Focus will work better without that on behind you. Thanks for the excellent recommendations!
I’m strongly considering getting the Fellini boxed set. We’ll see though. I’m definitely getting I Am Cuba, High Sierra is high on my list, I’ll probably get Passion of Joan of Arc and The Phantom Carriage as well. If you haven’t seen The Phantom Carriage, I highly recommend it. I believe it was Bergman’s favorite movie. It’s an amazing silent movie.
Hunter, I have yet to see The Phantom Carriage. I need to check it out. Thanks for the recommendation! The Fellini set is a great one. Hope you enjoy the sale!
I loved this. I’m picking up La Haine and The Worst Woman in the World, plus I Am Cuba, To Die For and Bound. I have a bunch of the others you mentioned. A suggestion, your camera is set to focus on faces. You should set it to manual and a good f stop like 11 and your focus should lock on you and the discs you are showing off.
Don, thank you for the camera tip! Your suggestion makes sense. I will definitely try that to improve the focusing. Appreciate it 😀. Glad you enjoyed the video, and hope you enjoy the sale!
The Worst Person In The World was one of the ones I rushed out to buy. I loved it so much! It was my #1 favorite movie of 2021 and one of my favorites of all time.
Any idea why amazon/barnes & noble have some 4k listed as 30% instead of 50%? Looking to pick up REAL LIFE and HAPPINESS but neither have changed for weeks. Wonder why?
Thanks James ! I just got a multi-region player and can finally start getting hold of some US only releases I've been wanting for ages ! The Criterion of "Ghost World" is one I'm definitely planning on picking up.
To Die For has been OOP for awhile so I love seeing the 4K edition. The Red Shoes is also a great 4k release (I'd pair it with Perfect Blue/Black Swan)- as well as any of the Lynch films! Great video- I keep hearing good things about the Varda set!
Glad you recommended the Olympics box set. That box set is the only Criterion release I've ever pre-ordered. The only disappointment is that there are no extras except for the book that's included. It's hard to criticize such an amazing set that most of us Olympics aficionados never thought we'd ever get but I would have liked to have had some English narration tracks on some of the non-English language films which many of the films had originally for international releases. Its mind-boggling why they wouldn't have included those.
Great recommendations James! Always great to hear someone talk about cinema who loves cinema. I might have to check out those box sets during the sale. Thanks!
Of the stack you presented, I'd be most interested in The Roaring Twenties, the two Olympic singles and Bergman Island. I wanted to comment on your thoughts re: La Haine. Quote: "What I like about this film is that this presents Paris and France not in the usual romanticized way that we normally think about this place." You point out that the picture is about 3 young men "experiencing the violence and the mayhem in the suburbs of Paris". Disturbing and uneasiness isn't something I relish during a movie viewing experience, with some exceptions but by and large, if I can watch a delightful, colorful and romantic film like Amelie vs. the "gritty esthetic" that La Haine brings, I'll always take the former. The one title I'm definitely leaning toward is the new one "Victims of Sin". That cover art has completely sold me. And I've seen more pictures inside the release that contains much more that style artwork, so, that alone is nudging me strongly. We shall see. Oh, and one more too. Am thinking of Memories of Murder. Anyway James, keep up the good work. Always enjoy your perspective.
I watched worst person in the world a few months back on a Sunday morning and it felt like the absolute wrong time to watch it, if you have a region b setup I’d recommend the trilogy release from MUBI that has reprise and Oslo August 31 on blu-ray as well
I'd like to get The Trial, Peeping Tom, Blood Simple, and Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. Maybe Perfect Days as well. I'll see if I find them in-store, though.
I heard it starts June 28th. But yeah, as the other reply said, it varies. It could start mid-June, mid-July, but dates typically overlap in July, which is why people refer to it as 'the July sale' specifically.
Magnitude Rev, I have added Farewell My Concubine to my list. It might wait until November but I’m probably going to go ahead and pick it up in July. Thanks!
Bergman Island. this is an Extra Feature on the company's latest re-release of another Bergman film, The Seventh Seal. So get that for a 2fer. This is like a documentary extra and not a full movie.
Hello, Ken! Yes, there is the Bergman Island documentary that is an supplement on one of the editions and a separate spine number release but there is also a recent film from 2021/2022 also called Bergman Island by Mia Hansen Love that is really good and one I would recommend.
Your descriptions are excellent; to the point and accurate. And we have overlapping tastes too, subbed for sure
Thank you, and glad to hear you enjoy the content! Welcome to the channel and look forward to sharing thoughts on films!

Ruth, The Night of the Hunter is amazing. So good. Glad you enjoyed the list.
My more anticipated pickup next month is Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid.
I’m looking forward to picking that one up too, Michael!

Love that you got into older movies as well as the newer!
So many ignore older movies.

Summertime is so good! David Lean, Katharine Hepburn, Venice… what more do you need? 😄
Agreed. I need to pop Summertime back in the player soon.
Nice choices. Recommendations I have are:

Gimme Shelter- Rolling Stones Documentary
Black Narcissus by Powell and Pressburger
The Sword of Doom- Kihachi Okamoto
Two Lane Blacktop - Marty Helman

Agree. Such a nice film and Renate Reinsve was wonderful in it.
I found a 4k of Do the Right Thing but not a Criterion 4k
Yes, I see Universal released a 4K in 2021.
Any idea why amazon/barnes & noble have some 4k listed as 30% instead of 50%? Looking to pick up REAL LIFE and HAPPINESS but neither have changed for weeks. Wonder why?
Titles released after the July sale are not included in the 50% off July sale pricing. Those titles will be 50% off at B&N in future 50% off sales.
