Fingers crossed for Criterion's October flash sale! The Wizard of OZ 4K 85th Anniversary also releases in November.

I had the pleasure of seeing this rereleased in Taiwan in 2019 after I saw it in 1994 in the US. A Blu Ray was released of it and has just the uncut movie but has Chinese subtitles which the Criterion collection does not have. It’s a Chinese film and needs the subtitles in its original language. If you know Chinese, it’s actually a deeper experience.

Love this movie. Have an older version on DVD. Not sure after reading about the Criterion edition and extras if it's worth upgrading.

I love Melville. I think the three you talked about are his best movies, Le Samourai is probably my favorite but it’s been at least 15 years since I’ve seen Army of Shadows or Le Cercle Rouge. Alain Delon is so awesome. Definitely the king of cool in my book. A couple other Delon movies I really like are Rocco and His Brothers, Purple Noon, Tony Arzenta(also goes under the title Big Guns), The Sicilian Clan(which has a kino blu ray release), and another Melville movie, Un Flic is also worth checking out.

Man you did this film an injustice, this is one of the two greatest movies that I have ever seen, streets of fire is the other.

Play Misty for me is a great film. Have it on Laserdisc. A film recommendation is Breaking Away from 1979. Staring a young Dennis Quaid, Daniel Stern (about 15 years before he played one of the house robbers in the Home Alone films) and Jackie Earle Haley. A wonderful film.

Thanks James for the great discussion on Melville. Love these three films, and also enjoyed Criterion's Blu-ray release of "Le Silence de la Mer", which is a very different film for Melville but quite fascinating.

Great video James. Le Cercle Rouge is in my back catalog. Le Samurai is brilliant. I want Army of Shadows bad. I’m going to wait and see if Criterion does a 4 K upgrade before I buy

I've only recently started watching his movies (Le Samourai, Bob le Flambeur, and Le Doulos) and so far so good! I have to say Le Doulos is my current favorite Melville movie that I highly recommend to anyone that likes crime movies.

I'll admit, I was interested in this movie because the cover is so beautiful and because I like exotica music (even though I don't think there's any connection there). Thanks for the review, I'll have to give this one a shot sometime soon

I love Melville, great choice to profile. My favourites are Le Doulos (The Snitch) and Bob Le Flambeur, with honourable mentions for Le Cercle Rouge and Le Samourai.

JPM is one of the reasons why I got into the Criterion Collection. Le Samourai, Army of Shadows and Bob Le Flambeur are my top favorites.

I was considering picking up the 4k of "Le Samourai" in the next half off sale, and I've also had the other two on my watchlists, so I guess I'll get all 3!

The Good, The Bad, and the Weird is definitely my top pick for this slate. Kim Jee-Woon is one of my favorite Korean filmmakers. I Saw the Devil and A Bittersweet Life are fantastic. I’m also very pumped for BFI’s Seven Samurai release and of course Criterion’s No Country for Old Men.

Great video, James. Here is my two cents for the December releases🙂 I have seen Addiction and thought it was ok but nothing I'd care to watch again. I think I saw The Good, the Bad and the Weird when it first came out on video but not sure. I'd need to watch again before deciding if I want to get this release or not. I have seen the first Critters film and thought it was a pretty good Gremlins rip-off and I have the box set from Shout which of course I have not got around to watching yet. I may get the Arrow release if there are a lot of exclusive enticing extras. I have both the Criterion release of Great Escape and Kino 4k but I may get the Arrow 4K if the extras look worthy enough. It's a great film worth multiple viewings. I will get the Demolition Man 4k. The Last Video Store is something I would need to watch first before deciding on that. There have been a good selection of Arrow releases this year that I have gotten but haven't got around to watching them yet as I have been trying to catch up on my back log of other films I have -- a never ending adventure 🙂 I thought I left a comment on the Long Good Friday review you did but it's not there. i got that also as an upgrade to my Blu-ray. I've seen it a few times and enjoy it. Worth watching again in 4K.

The LA Police 2505 film is Idiocracy. Hilarious film and very relevant for current times.

Warner Bros licensed several of their titles to Arrow and with their release of Demolition Man that gives me hope that they will release Contact and Falling Down.

I’m so curious, I pre-ordered “Paris Texas” via Zavvi (I can’t remember the label) before the Criterion was announced and possibly regretting my decision! May have to double dip! Great video!

I'm thinking the move for me is to get Demolition Man and The Great Escape for sure and maybe Critters. I have them all on blu ray and would just sell those versions on ebay. Wondering how the Critters boxset compares to the Scream Factory blu ray boxset but I usually would lean getting an Arrow Edition over Scream Factory. Just better quality imo

I loved the look on what they did for Maggie Cheung...especially in the first film where she looks like a live modern DC character.

This movie blew me away. The music was incredible. Lots of feeling with an ending I will gladly take.

great review James, of course you know what I thought of the film - I would also suggest The Honorary Consul, Ruby and The Fourth Protocol also by MacKenzie he was responsible for directing a lot of Plays for Today titles in the 70's for the BBC and a few are on the BFI Play for Today sets which has three volumes so far.

I just discovered Vinegar Syndrome and they do amazing work restoring older movies and their packaging is just perfect!❤

High five James on a 4k for Play Misty for Me! So someone besides me also totally loves that early Eastwood film. I believe it was the first theatrical film he directed. I have the too-long-in-the-tooth blue-ray and found it has really bad rendition of dark and/or indoor scenes, black crush on my system, though daylight scenes look great. Jessica Walter steals the show imo, thought she played the psycho perfectly. Also much pumped for No Country, Paris, Tx, both of which I'll buy the 4k....already have 8 1/2 Criterion blu-ray and looks really good, no double dip there. Unfamiliar with Eastern Condors, will investigate...several clips, trailer on youtube. The Man Who Wasn't There is excellent, modern film noir, one of Billy Bob Thornton's finest performances, you will love it I know, don't know why it doesn't get hype of other Coen Bros. films, maybe cause some folks just don't dig B&W. For fans of 8 1/2 (a movie about movie making), check out another great Criterion title that's also a movie about a movie... Francois Truffaut's "Day for Night." Speaking of Terrance Malick, my fav of his is The Tree of Life, tailor made for a 4k imo, stunning cinematography by the great Emanuel Lubezki. Still holding out for a 4k for my favorite film of all time....The Graduate. Your Dawgs having a close game like that may be just what the doctor ordered, while my beloved Bama has not had a real test and uga will be first SEC game, at least it's home for us, but I see why UGA is a Vegas favorite right now.
