  • In this video I continue my Cargo Trailer Camper Conversion by building a bed and table area.
    I build the cabinets out of 2x4s and plywood and a table out of butcher block. I even try my hand at sewing by making the cushions!
    This video is part of my Cargo Trailer to Camper Conversion project. I'm no professional, so I'm sharing my progress and my lessons. Feel free to follow along!

    Looks great! Have to agree about the doors though, you probably have more patience than me.

    Gas piston struts on the doors would both keep them up and pull them tightly closed.
    I, too, would like to see a screen across the back opening so you have al fresco dining/sleeping. Perhaps with your sewing skills, you could modify one of those magnetic garage door opening screens.
    I think your cooler/fridge on a slide coming out of the end of your banquette would work well, freeing up kitchen cabinet space.
    Lastly, a 270° awning mounted above the rear doors would be cool (wanting someone to try that before I waste my money . . . LOL). That would provide an outdoor space for seating/ grilling. A rod tieing the swing doors straight out would create a small patio area with some privacy in a crowded campground.

    • @AUTigerAlum83
      @AUTigerAlum83 3 года назад

      And one more thing . . . the banquette ends at the rear doors give you a ton of possibilities. You could add puddle lights there, a hose bibb, an outdoor shower wand for rinsing things off before bringing them into the camper, a propane outlet for a small gas grill, etc. At this stage of your build, most of those utilities could be routed from your kitchen cabinets, under the bathroom, and back up into the banquette space.
      High cabinets (at the ceiling) over the banquette seats would add a lot of storage space without interfering with seating or sleeping.
      I think you've designed a very flexible layout that can change over time easily. Good job!

    After watching this video, I built my own bed/table for my camper. I used most of the same ideas as you, but used the bottom of a 4 foot folding table as the base for the table. It works great!! I can remove the table from the camper if I want. I also used your ideas for the folding bed. The only difference, is that I bought cushion covers instead of making them, maybe i'll do it in the future. Thanks again for the ideas!!

    Cool job. If you add a couple pieces of Velcro at the corners of the table (underside) and the ledges which hold the tabletop it won't slide when sleeping or driving

    I believe you guys are going to enjoy that space a ton more. So much more useable area now. The other set up just block way to much access. Now your inspector 😁 can still take a nap on one side (or you 😎) while the other is working or eating some pretzels 🥨 and 🍺 on the other. Question, can the bottom table leg receivers be installed inverted? Or is that a different style? I’ve seen them before and it’s a clean , low profile , and prevents toe kicking & tripping. Looking great.

    I don't think I would have put in doors at all. Best choice would be to go for drawers on the bottom so you can easily access that storage If not drawers then just a board across the bottom so that bins won't slide out. You are not going to just throw stuff under the bed. It will most likely be in some sort of bin and those doors will be in the way. You did a good job on the sewing. First time trying it and you put in zippers. That's impressive.

    • @befreebuilds

      I like the idea of a board across the bottom. The doors are already pretty annoying

      @@befreebuilds what about a board across the bottom and have the doors fold down so they are not in the way when accessing the space?

      Nice build, good work…..I agree the doors underneath are going to be tough to work with. Maybe flip flop them to the top. That way you can just lift them up.. .. you could also put small drawers from the back (tools, equipment, etc.)accessing them from outside. Nice idea keeping things simple, I’m sure it kept costs down some and put it in other areas.

    Awesome build man, thinking about one day doing the same. Have you thought about adding a screen for the back door opening where the bed is and attaching a canopy off the back somehow to keep the rain out? I like having the fresh air and hearing the birds in the morning and campers get a little stuffy to me. Especially in the summer.

    • @befreebuilds

    Nice job. It;'s not about being perfect. I am building something similar for my shelter (old bank vault in the basement about 14x12). I want a place to sit with table for four or five people max during tornado, but I want to be able to sleep in the shelter in necessary. I am going to buy the Springfield telescoping pedestal leg.

    So are the bed stools attached to the wall in anyway? Or I guess how do they keep from sliding around. I may have missed that part. This is definitely what I’m doing in my camper! Thanks!

  • @scottgorman7166

    You will remove the tabletop when traveling and secure in the sleeping position....right? Keep in mind inside the trailer while in motion is a mini earthquake.

  • @mikestevens2053
    @mikestevens2053 Год назад

    Very nice, thanks for the video. My build will have a similar configuration and I'm still deciding on how to access the bench for storage. I'm thinking hinged doors on the top (ie under the cushions) for the forward part, with the rear portion accessible via simple end doors, pull-out drawers, or leaving one side completely open for long items such as hiking poles, etc. Your vertical access doors are very straightforward, but I suspect you've found them inconvenient to access? Any tips or suggestions in this area?

  • @JBLynch

    Really love the cabinets for the bed design! Great job! What is the length/ width of the benches? Oh, and the thickness of the plywood you used for the top of the benches

  • @billdaniels3049

  • @pjf7943

    You could have cut the bottom of the chine strips at an angle to lift the doors at a greater angle.....

  • @mobquet
    @mobquet 2 года назад

    Awesome attention to detail! Those cabinets and tabletop fit perfectly (no slop OR too tight) plus the pattern on the cushions on either side of the zipper, perfect alignment.
    With regards to the discussion about the under cabinet storage, did you consider using 48"+ drawer slides so you can have a full extension drawer go straight out the back? Weight management would obviously be something to consider, especially if both drawers were to be loaded and then fully extended at the same time :)

    • @befreebuilds
      @befreebuilds  2 года назад

      I'll probably end up switching out the storage in the back in some way. The doors arent very easy to open. Not sure what to do yet, but the long sliding drawers could work. I'd like to maintain easy access from inside as well

    • @mobquet
      @mobquet 2 года назад

      @@befreebuilds if you box the structure along the inside in order to mount slides down low, you could make the drawer itself shallow then flip the hardware for the current storage doors 180 degrees so it pivots on the bottom and provide access to the shallow drawer while it's still stowed in the trailer.

  • @xchick10
    @xchick10 3 года назад +3

    Those cabinet doors on the bottom are going to get annoying opening up like that. Sliding doors would be the least agitating. Nice changes otherwise.
