How to Build a DIY Travel Trailer - Dinette, Bed, Cabinets and more (Part 6)

  • Опубликовано: 8 сен 2024
  • Today I'm building the front convertible dinette and sleeping area in the DIY Travel Trailer Project. The Dinette includes a table with seating that converts to a bed and also has a drawer and some flip up storage under the seating. I also added some vinyl flooring and cabinets above the dinette that will also double as the distribution area for the 12V wiring.
    Next up on the Travel trailer project will be to run the 12v wiring, add interior lighting, add a coupler and weight distribution/sway control, and finally build the kitchen area. After that will be to take her camping!
    Thanks for watching and let me know if you have any questions!
    Joe

    I have 2 10' shelves in my living room held up with 4 of those exact brackets on each. I had my 220lb friend swing on the shelves after I hung them and it held just fine. I love how strong they are, and that they were the cheapest brackets HD had.

    The only change I think I would make would be a horizontal cleat for the table top to rest on when it's down as a bed. Those short vertical ones may wind up poking someone in the calves more than a horizontal one would. I really like your build, you have great skills and are definitely making a much better trailer than you could ever buy! Linda and I send our best.

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  5 лет назад +1

      Thank you! I appreciate that :)
      regarding the support cleat... I actually thought of that first... but the reason I went with the vertical ones is so there would be some space where nothing was behind your leg, versus the horizontal would be along the fully length. But only time will tell I guess... if there end up being bothersome I'll add a horizontal cleat :D

    I'm really enjoying this build series on the camp trailer. I've been think of doing something like this for some time now and it is giving me some insights. Keep it up when done I would be interested in a price break down.

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  5 лет назад +5

      Thanks Matt! If you are thinking about building a trailer I can't recommend the forum tnttt.com (teardrops and tiny travel trailers).... Its mostly folks like you and I that have built all sorts of amazing home built trailers. LOTS of great info there! I haven't posted in years but have been meaning to throw this build on there when I'm done. Just a great site.
      As for a cost break down... I may do something on this at the end. But it will be very general as a lot of things have broad ranges in prices and I there are so many different options that can span that price greatly. But I will likely do something on that and maybe contrast it to a used one versus a new. I can tell you now that a used one is likely a better value to get a trailer considering the time I have invested into this... but I'm still trending way better than buying a new one. haha.. not sure if that made sense or not :)

    Looks Great, love the R&D, the only thing I would take further is have the table leg mounted to the bottom of the table and fold down with a locking hinge in the middle.

      Thanks! Now that is a good idea... I thought of having it swing from the bottom of the table back... but there wasn't the room... but I really do like that idea of it folding with a lockable hinge... that would keep it off the floor too :)

    Very neat, that angle metal makes all the difference in finishing off and providing a solid corner that would otherwise be prone to damage. How about an internal shelf just above the pull out draw to provide a bit more storage.

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  5 лет назад

      Thanks! I really liked how the trim dressed and finished it up as well
      As for a shelf in that space.. that it is a great idea... it is a spot that can't really be used and would give a bit of exttra utility! thank you John for the idea! :)

    Nice! 😊 Similar to a yacht interior dinette. May I suggest attaching the table leg to the bottom of the table. Have it hinge and lock under the table. Get leg off the floor. It’s a toe stubbing hazard. Have a wide Velcro strip sewn to back and bottom cushions. Then tack on corresponding loop pieces to wood. This will anchor the cushions.

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  5 лет назад

      Thanks Reggie, much appreciated! :D regarding the leg, I actually tried to have the leg swing from under the table back... but there wasn't enough room to swing back.... and there would still need to be something on the floor for it to lock into.

  • @AK-ff7qq
    @AK-ff7qq 4 года назад

    I like your build so far. If it were me. I'd turn the front table support leg in 90 degrees.That ways it would make getting in better.With no chance for tripping getting in or out. Not sure how long the leg is or how deep the seats are tho. So it may not work. Also when you put your ceiling up. You could use those little decorative washers.Like you see in mobile homes.They'll give a bit more holding power to your screws. While giving a decorative touch to the ceiling as well.

  • @johnrobinson1020

    Nice work; the table mechanism is really cool making the dinette functional as a dining area converting to a roomy bed. I think your modification to the back-rest was a good idea and looks much more comfortable than the original back. Roof lockers look good and make for good storage space.

    I put that flooring in our house as a replacement for the cat and dog-pee filled carpet from the previous owner. I did the install despite having a degenerative bone disease that eventually made me permanently disabled. It was supposed to be a short term stop-gap until we could get new flooring installed by a professional; the vinyl planking is still in the house, it's very durable. It was easy despite my legs and we used a different colour, I'm a fan!

    For your next project: look at the older VW Westphalia table floor-mount...a simple, nearly-flush threaded floor-plate you screw your table leg into. Owned my "Westy" for many years and it never failed. I do appreciate your handy work though!

    On our rv unit. The table leg folds up and it stores on the bottom side of table top. Simple bracket attached to the floor as a guide for the bottom of the support leg. This would eliminate your leg from being a toe hazard. Just an option.

      I did think about having it attach to the top but there wasn't the room for it to swing back... it was about an inch too long. But it would be probably the better way to go :)

    Absolutely amazing build. This makes me think. Maybe I can do something similar with scrap material. You're an animal when it comes to high quality builds. Maybe I can come close with a cheap build. Cheers

    Very PROFESSIONAL nice job. Not sure you need that middle bar since you had pins going through wall as well. But very nice.

      Thank you! as for the support leg... the table will stand fine with out it, but in case someone leans on it I don't want all that force bending against the sliding side... the shelf brackets only go about 1/3 of the table and in case someone leans on the end I don't want the sliding portion getting bent out of shape. More of a precaution :D

    The metal corner at both seat possible hazard in sliding in and out off seating area. If cushion remove it's not a great concept. Possible rounding edge. Same for the drawer metal corners. Yes your satisfied. It's just I'm a mom and I wouldn't leave my kids in that trailer for they tend to climb into onto cushions? Seating seam to be next to a sharp pointed edge. Also the that drawer left open its trip pointed hazard waiting to happen. But everything else is awesome layout.
