DIY Travel Trailer Lock - How To Make
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 28 июл 2024
- Today I'm making a hitch/coupler lock for the DIY Travel Trailer Project. Overall it is a pretty basic design... just some 4" steel tubing, two lock hasps and puck locks, a 2" hitch ball, and a hinge. And While it might be a bit overkill, I do think it will give me a bit more peace of mind on camping trips when we decide to leave the trailer for day outings:)
As for the next part in this series... that should be the 12V wiring, lights, and the solar setup. After that... camping!!!!
Thanks for watching and let me know if you have any questions.
Joe

Nice little lock project! Should be a good deterrent, and also hold up to quite a bit of punishment. I agree that the WarLok’s should be adequate for pick resistance... especially when you’re using two.
Also, thanks for the kind words about my channel, and good luck finishing up your travel trailer. 👍
Your reputation proceeds you LPL. Good to see you in the comments!
As soon has he mentioned youtuber that picks locks I knew you were involved.
LockPickingLawyer oh man, so sorry I missed this comment! I appreciate the kind words and also really appreciate your videos which were incredibly helpful in my lockselection and decision to build this lock! Such an awesome channel you and have kept me watching you defeat locks in so many ways! 😀🙏
Best regards!
Joe

Putting in place security measures like this will deter 95% of casual thieves which is what they are designed to do. If someone wants your trailer bad enough they'll take it but that type of determined thief is a lot more rare. Good work Joe. Looks stout as hell. 👍👍👍
Main thing is the professional thief is well prepared before hand and is only keeping an eye out for those valuable, accessible and easy opportunities - this project is a deterrence to that.
thanks Jess! very true... if someone really wants it, they can certainly get it. Just a matter of time and noise.... but I'll have a couple more things that might make that kind of thief sad if they do get it (video/pic/gps ;)
Im a welder and metal fabricator and im very impressed with that design. Nice work. Not to many people will spend the time trying to defeat that set up. Im one who believes in overkill and you have mastered that.
I've wanted to learn welding, to make my own designs. Is this a difficult skill to learn?
Thanks for the video. You are quite the Craftsman. 👍
I was totally impressed with your lock design and the added feature of pyramid style! The red paint looks fantastic! 👍
MAE HAY thank you Mae!
@@icemanhunter1 Proven Industries have a well design coupler and safety chain secure solution. Check it out. This home made one does not allow for the safety chains to be secured, someone can simply backup, hook the safety chains up to their two vehicle and away the go.
William Gates I addressed the removable chains at 12:15
What a fantastic design and execution, Joe. Your trailer is a work of love and art and totally worth protecting as much as practical. Thanks for posting!
Best regards, Lloyd C.
b3877896 thank you Lloyd! It’s has certainly been a super involved project that has pushed me a lot! But totally worth it for the memories with my girls:)
As a retiree from the shipyard I thought I was the only one around that preps welds. Our welds are inspected so presentation is important. Nuclear submarines. Beautiful work. You are talented!
I like how you answer all of the questions I have in my head at the end. Great job and AWESOME build. I’m a 28 year vet welder by trade and thought I was a carpenter before that, but you could definitely teach me a couple of things! This is fascinating.
Smart choice for the lock. The LPL has mad skills and if it took him a while, that’s a good lock. Very nice design and craftsmanship btw. I likely would have welded the hinge to the inside to both hide it and protect it from potential cutting attacks. It would be difficult to knock the pin out if it’s blocked by the outer shell as well. The thief would probably still have to do a lot of cutting and/or defeat those puck locks anyway, so...pretty secure as it is.
Make it big enough to put a strip of rubber tire inside of it ...talk about slowing down a grinder lol
Its not over kill, its actually a great prevention tool. Most thieves are looking for "easy pickin's" and will just move on when they see something like that.
Grevlain thanks what im hoping!! 😀👍
Agreed. The second thing i have seen a lot of is trailers being skull dragged by chain only. Most traipers have the chain eyes right next to the hitch, however this has them far back. Whats more, the cover has no real point you could easily connet a chain too.
Its a pretty secure solution, but I'd still go a gps sender for $15/month for peace of mind.
Yup, they are super lazy so anything you can do to make their process of thieving take longer is a boon for you. I lock ALL my doors and windows when leaving for a period of time. If the break into a room, they are essentially stuck in that room, we do not have flimsy doors so trying to break them by kicking will only result in hopefully long term pain for the criminal. Even the inside of my roof is protected against entry from the outside. Hopefully with the perimeter alarm, roof alarm and 64 zone house alarm, each blaring at 150 decibels with strobe lights, the criminals will not like that. The things we have to do to protect the things we love and bought against those that are to darn lazy and a blight on society...sigh.
@@JohanlastZa Hey Johan, do you have a link for the 150 decibels alarm? I am only seeing cheap one on ebay that claim 105, but only measure 80. Thank you.
For a change it's great to see quality work from someone... I'm a professional welder and I can appreciate your workmanship.
That is one hell of a lock system, great job! I am always amazed at the level of thought you put into these builds, awesome!
wonderful !!!
Once again love your trailer build project.
Diego Quaresma thank you Diego!
Beautiful craftsmanship. As they say, locks keep honest people honest. These days, with cordless angle grinders that have tons of power and a long run time, I’m a bit more paranoid and I think hiding from plain view goes a long way.
Except that hiding gives mister bad a secluded place in which to work their mischief, so add those digital cameras to keep it under your eye.
thank you Steve! yes, I agree... and don't worry about being paranoid.... I just spent a few days making a lock for my trailer....haha... I've got even more measure that will be added but not videoed... (gps/camera monitoring )
It looks like it came from the factory! Excellent work. Thanks for sharing this.
Your trailer lock is pure genius!!! I have enjoyed or more correctly, was impressed by you trailer build videos. You are an inspiration. Thank You for taking the time to share your project.
Man, that looks like a Professional built that !! Sweet.
Thank you Doug!
“Nice warm welcoming”... 😂. Great job! Great video! Love the humor 👍
the bigger the criminal, the bigger the axe....lol ;)
homesteadonomics 😂👍
If The LPL had a bit of trouble picking a Warlock Puck lock then it's a good lock. your application of the lock and your workmanship are great!
Thanks for the share. Im glad I watched the video in its entirety. All the concerns I had, you addressed during the closing statements. I will be starting mine soon!
The Lockpicking Lawyer is amazing.
Sociopath Mercenary yes, very cool videos for sure and really opens the eye to how quickly most locks can be defeated by a skilled pro

Awesome design. I bet a thief will keep walking when they see that lock. 👍
RetroWeld thanks Douglas! I sure hope so! Haha.... The aim is is make it not worth their time....and more hassle and noise than they’d want to make
I’ve watched almost the whole build this morning...while at work. I couldn’t turn it off. Congratulations on completing your project, it’s fantastic.
First thought was the hinge but waited to watch the whole video. Looks awesome.
You should 100% patent and market this design.
thanks BP! I'm really am liking Greg's 'BAMM' lock name... haha.. thanks Greg!
Great job! Love your content, keep it up! Greetings from Germany
the Dude thank you!! I appreciate it😀🙏
Great job ! Yes you hit all my Q that I was also thinking ! Really impressed.
Thanks
Brother Joe, your designs are above and beyond anyone else's and that is what draws me to your channel my friend!!! You keep being Joe and keep building Joe things. Btw, a lock ONLY keeps an honest man honest. PERIOD!
Take care and God Bless my friend. Jay. 👍👍
Thanks Jay! But I would hope that a truly honest man wouldn't steal regardless of a lock being in place or not...haha... but I get what you mean ;)
Yore correct in the fact that it mostly slows thieves down!
Gerald Richardson yep, that’s her goal...it could still be taken. But hopefully it is more hassle than it would be worth....especially considering the gps tracker would lead LE straight to them. 😉
tweeted, dang you are getting good at all that welding!
weetreebonsai thank you WTB! Still a ways to go to get to the leve I want....but as long as I’m improving I’m happy!😀👍
That is a great design/idea! Wish we had one on our 16' trailer that was stolen several years ago when I was working for a local landscape company. It was locked up and chained, they still got it.
Joe, added security is never overkill!. The lock looks great and the red colour really makes it stand out. If it deters someone from yours they will go to an easier target, leaving yours alone. With the time and effort you have put into this it would be heartbreaking to lose it. Great video as always and a HUGE thumbs up from across the pond.
UK Tony thanks tony! That’s my aim...mostly to deter. Anything can be thwarted given enough time....but I think it will make me feel a bit better when we leave camp for the day😀👍
I have been thinking about some sort of better solution for locking a trailer hitch and you just defeated my thought process! So I say to you Great job,
J.A.B. Thank you JAB!
Fantastic work as always! Have you considered adding a hidden GPS device to the trailer, in the event that some very determined thief was able to steal it? That way you could track it and hopefully get it back.
GPS and a pin hole cam at front catching a license plate then when they reach a communication tower you could retrieve the video via the so called " CLOUD "
Henrik and Claude are right and if it’s the you’re standing in there would be several places to install it! I’ll add safety chains….. can really help stopping your trailer from leaving! Safety chains….. myself I crank the tongue to maximum height, I then wrap the safety chains around the crank so crank can’t rotate! It’s easy to pickup the tongue of the trailer and low it on another trailer hitch ball…. Even the wrong size it can be done but with tongue at the top of lift it’s impossible to lower until the lock on safety chains are defeated! Just another step to slow someone down! I crank the tongue to maximum height, I then wrap the safety chains around the crank so it can’t rotate! It’s easy to pickup the tongue of the trailer and low it on another trailer hitch ball…. Even the wrong size ball can be done but with tongue at the top of lift it’s impossible to lower tongue until the lock on safety chains are defeated! Also as a wrecker/tow truck operator I did bank Re-pulls and found way of defending everyone one of these efforts to stop thieves so make sure you make your payments!
I'll def be on the lookout for scrap to make this. Brilliant deterrent!
Great build as always Joe! Your craftsmanship, talent, and ingenuity never ceases to amaze me. Keep up the great work!
Maximum 37. There is no 'overkill.' There is only 'open fire' and 'I need to reload.
Lock looks good
Charlie thank you Charlie!
Schlock mercenary FTW!
"A nice warm welcoming" HAHAHAHAHAHA! Enjoying your videos!
Great looking lock box. Really like the hitch ball with you locking the coupler before installing the lock box. If you are going to leave the trailer long term somewhere pull off one of the wheels. That makes it a little bit harder to drag away.
Tom Truesdale yes that is a great and sure fire way to make it really hard😀👍
Wow, the housing you built for your trailer tongue is outstanding and well built! I am happy for you that Warlock was able to sponsor you!
Thanks John! I was really happy they were open to sending some locks too! They are pricey but seem to be really well made and strong. I asked if they'd be willing to give a discount and they said they'd be just send some out as long as I put a link in there. So no official sponsorship or anything... just some free locks! but I'll take it... as building things can get expensive for a firefighter who likes to build things in his spare time :D
I've been waiting for this video!
Dan Neumann awesome! Thanks for checking it out dan!
@@homesteadonomics I saw the pictures on Instagram, sweet build
Pretty build, on top of hitch maybe put wheel hub lock like they put on cars when they have a lot of tickets.
FixmyToyota I’ve definitely thought about that for one of the wheels😀
FixmyToyota you can cut that off with a cordless sawzall or angle grinder with a cut off wheel in a heartbeat
Power tools are wonderful
Absolutely the best pick proof locks.
Amazing warmly welcoming!
haha.... yes, it would be for sure ;)
That is one heck of a beefy trailer lock.

Very nice security touch to your travel trailer build. Wonderful tool talents and patience in designing and putting it together. You have a great channel and I enjoy all the nuances. Thank you.
Someone's gonna leave the trailer and steal the lock
lol... hope not!
🤣
supercomputer2004 LOL 🤣🤣
I was thinking the same thing!!
I love it! Yeah, if someone wants to steal it they will. But if it is setting there next to another trailer, you know it won't be the one that's gonna be taken. That hitch lock would make criminals look for an easier choice.
thats what I'm hoping :)
Excellent job making the trailer tongue lock unit with the special warlocks!
That is an awesome build! Thanks for sharing. Watching your channel makes me homesick!
Take this to the show SHARK TANK....I'm sure lots of trailor companies would buy your product. AWESOME WORK !!
Actually, the trailer companies wouldn't buy it, because they would have to admit that this product has value, therefore their trailers are easy to steal.
Hook the chains together around the ball and drive away. Quicker than latching the ball. 🤷♂️
I'd cut the front hinge off and you're in !! Easy peasy !!
@@weldnerd6922 No, you're not. Watch to the end. ;)
At 12:15 he talks about how he removes the chains to prevent that. The thief would have to bring their own chains to do that.
@@jedironin380cut the hinge, pry it open and slide a long screwdriver to unlatch the ball
Axe!!! I SHOOT THEIR ASS !!!!
What a killer lock design! Bravo!
Your metal working skills are truly amazing. From cutting, grinding, welding and finishing you are a master of your craft. Wish my skill set was as well developed as yours. Kinda jealous!!😉😉😉. Thanks for the video and looking forward to the next one!
peter debad thank you! But it’s not that good...I still grind down a lot...and just show the okay welds😉
You should get a patent ASAP. Great idea. Thank you.
Jesus A O thanks Jesus! Not sure what I’ll do just yet, but happy that it’s built and on the trailer at least :)
IN YOUR TRIANGLE BIT I WOULD HAVE PUT A BIT OF 4140 ROUND .THEN THEY CUT THE TOP THE 4140 WOULD SPIN INSIDE THE TRIANGLE BIT..
downward pressure it'll still cut through.
I use a warlock kingpin lock for my semi, great locks. Great build. I’m always amazed you come up with stuff like this.
The Arizona Homestead Project thanks! I agree! They are really quality locks and I will probably buy theirs for most any lock needs in the future. Glad to hear you use it on your semi! 😀👍
The best homemade trailer lock custom I ever have seen. Thanks for the wonderful vlog smile 😊
thank you Donald! Much appreciated for sure!
Holy crap! If someone steals the trailer after all that then they earned it.
Ryan Ballard haha...yep! But I still hope not😀👍
Anyone that steals doesn't deserve squat.... except maybe a free ride in the back of a squad car.
@@sferg9582 That and a cellmate named Bubba who likes boys.
Especially if they got a warm welcome with an axe.
Nice job, only I would have turned the hinge barrel inward. The strength is still on the barrel locks, but being on the inside would stop stupid people from trying to open the clam shell.
Steve 1961P. That would be an option for sure. But I think I’d prefer to add guards outside the pin instead. But I think it will still be good...at least I’m pretty sure 🤔😀👍
@@homesteadonomics
Maybe be more of a deterrent with hinge inside. And could also weld some random steel pieces under your angle so if grinder was used it would explode the cutting wheel.
Also would put it underside as well.
Overkill is best. Nice job.
Great hitch lock ! I will make my self one what a wonderful idea. I have a place on my frame to put a chain around the spoke of the wheel and lock to the frame. Every little bit helps. Thanks for this video
That is sweet. Thanks for being so thorough on what you use and the instructions!
thanks Calvin! I appreciate you watching :D
if thats not patented you should totally do that. Hell you can sell those for a pretty penny. (note to self: watch til the end lol)
denny be rhys lol, I’m guilty of that too
haha... yes, it'd be nice to have a patent on that but I think I'd have to rework the design to be able to fit multiple types of hitches... so one design could fit multiple styles
@@homesteadonomics well keep up the great work, these videos have helped resparked a desire to get out there and just "do". I mean, you built a camper dude...broke it down super easy and used common sense to show us nothin is impossible. Ive been digging your videos for a long time now and always find myself waiting on the next project. THANKS, truly.
Put the hinge on the inside, as it is an easy and quick entry point.
Removing the hinge pin wouldn't do anything
Watch at 11:30. He talks about this.
I am completely addicted to your videos !! I’m learning a lot and admire your talents. Really cool to watch !
Excellent craftsmanship and nice detailed finish.
What about the hinge pin? A grinder would have it out in 20 seconds!
You wouldn't be able to split the two halves because they are locked together.
Inexpensive GPS tracker can be hidden somewhere incase it is taken.
Recovering_Californian it is something I’ve thought about 😉
What brand is a cheap tracker you don't have to have a monthly fee or replace batteries every three weeks
@@hotshoter2 Read my mind. I looked into these and they are pricey!
@Ken Howard You gotta weigh the price of a stolen or damaged trailer to the price of the GPS device. Better safe than sorry. Especially if all of your belongings are inside.
There will always be a way to steal anything. The more security you put on something, the more attention you draw. Very nice build !! 👍
That's one beautiful lock! I was going to suggest to remove the chains, but you addressed that in your Q&A at the end. Kudos on the great craftsmanship!
That is a great idea, never thought to make my own lock mechanism good job
You do good work! This would stop a opportunistic thief. Like you said, if someone really wants they will get it. You done enough to make most find an easier target.
Another great addition to your trailer. It is just getting better and better! Great job on the lock, very cleaver
That's a great locking setup. There really is nothing you can do to stop a thief if they are determined to take something. My strategy is to make it inconvenient, laborious, time-consuming, difficult, noisy, well lit and videotaped.
RedHotFiat yes very true! They can get it if they absolutely want to. And in that case I will be more than eager to lead the police to them ....not all the aspects of the trailer are shown 😉
Nice build! I made something very similar for my Race trailer. Mine has a 3 tube V style tongue, instead of the single tube. Made mine out of a pair of 4x6 steel tubes, cut on an angle and welded together to make the V shape. If nothing else it will make someone think twice about trying to stealing it.
That really is a great looking and well designed hitch lock. Well done sir!
very interesting build and you answered the question i saw about the safety chains
Best design I have ever seen !
This is a game changer. Amazing! Thanks for sharing.
Nice work. I think you did a really good job on this project.
One thing I learned on this video is that I don't have to be the best welder and have the perfect bead. Just a very, very good grinder. Thanks for that. It gives me confidence to try my own welding projects in the future. 💜🌞🌵
yes, I do love my grinder ;)
@@homesteadonomics, Yes, and you are very good with your grinder! 💜🌞🌵

awesome work on the coupler lock
Nicely built, looks like a production piece.
That is one slick looking coupler lock Joe! Well done. I almost have the confidence to buy my first welder thanks to your videos in this series.
Mark Zemlak thanks mark! That’s awesome to hear! I can’t recommend the Forney welders enough. But in the end, get what works for you and your budget and start sticking metal together. You will learn it quicker than you think. One of the best things I can recommend is to get some similar thickness Scraps similar to your planned project material and throw down some practice beads. It’ll help you get the machine dialed in before the real pieces get welded. Don’t ask me how I learned that one....haha
Awesome build. Really love that colour choice.
