    Tires. If you have a single axle trailer, this advice is of no consequence. But, if you have a two or three axle trailer, then please listen up. Trailer tires are not built like automobile tires, for a very significant reason. When you take a two or three axle trailer around a corner, the tires do not gracefully turn in the direction of travel and smile with glee as they do so. No, instead they are dragged sideways, screaming for their life. They are being twisted violently by the sideways forces. Those tires want to continue quietly in a straight line, not being skidded sideways across the pavement, tearing at their sidewalls. And, there you have it. The sidewalls. Trailer tires have special sidewalls to withstand sideways twisting. Don’t be tempted to put some other tire on your trailer, such as Light Truck tires. Trailer tires are special, for a reason. Another hint: If you back your trailer onto a hard surface pad, do the following. Once in place, roll the trailer forward and then back into place. Why? As you back in, you are invariably making a turn at the same time. You are twisting the steel belts as you turn. If you stop in the middle of the twist and leave the trailer there, the steel belts will “take a set,” that is, maintain the twist when later you decide to drive away. Now you have an abnormal tire. By moving forward and back at the end of the parking sequence, you allow the steel belts to straighten up before you go off and leave them. Happy trails. 😄

From Harbor Freight I bought the home garage screen door kit and cut it to fit the ramp door opening, I stapled velcro around the sides and top and slid a 1/2 inch pipe (cut into 1ft pieces) into the bottom of the screen to hold it down. First, you did an amazing job. Not too complex or overdone. Just very well thought out and functional.
    Second, you designed it for you, and you put it together. So you can change/repair as you see fit. If you buy company "x's" trailer, and something wears out ten years from now..good luck fixing it. No matter what they say, those things are built to a price point and the components are made to look good for a year. And then, all bets are off.
    Nice job.

    Because your trailer has two axles, it is very likely that this trailer is rated for more than 3,000 pounds. Also, remember, every travel trailer gets heavier and heavier with time. It is true. So, after two years of use, you should re-weigh your trailer so you have no surprises. I would suggest that you install a weight distribution hitch system on your trailer and tow hitch. It will travel much better for you.

      @Dave-sw2dm 4 года назад +1

      So Dale, why does the trailer get heavier ? Also, no need for weight distribution hitch unless the tongue weight either exceeds the rating of the receiver or the front of the truck gets lighter.

    • @dalebannon8503
      @dalebannon8503 4 года назад +29

      A travel trailer (something you live in) gets heavier every year because in a tight space like this, we get better and better organized. We humans get inventive. We find ways to cubby-hole another item that would be so nice to have with us. Every item adds a little more weight. And, after about two years, all these little things really add up. And, as this weight increases, there is a possibility that the tongue weight has changed, also. This is a critical point because tongue weight really affects how well the trailer and the tow vehicle work well (or not well) with each other. With a tag along trailer, you need a minimum of 10% (and 15% is better) of the total weight of the trailer to be carried by the tongue. When the tongue weight gets too low, it tends to try to lift up the rear end of your tow vehicle and, going down the road, it becomes unstable, leading to excessive sway and roll overs. Measure the distance from the bottom of your tow vehicle’s rear bumper down to the ground. Now place the trailer’s tongue hitch onto the tow vehicle’s ball hitch. Now measure the bumper to ground distance again. If the distance changed more than 2,” you need a weight distribution hitch to correct this. Even if you think you don’t need a weight distribution hitch, your tow vehicle will perform better with one on. In addition to what your tow vehicle can pull, there is another weight that is important. It is called the Combined Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. Your tow vehicle has this rating. It involves not just what it can pull, but how much total weight it can endure. How much does your totally loaded tow vehicle weigh PLUS the total weight of the fully loaded trailer. You need to know not to exceed that rating. It you are running very close to these ratings (and your tow vehicle does not have a manufacturer’s installed tow package), help your tow vehicle’s engine and transmission by keeping your engine running at higher ROMs than normal. This is especially important as you go up hills or start out from a stand still. Force (manually) your transmission to not shift until you get it “rev”ing in the each gear.

    • @dalebannon8503
      @dalebannon8503 4 года назад

      NOT ROMs, but RPMs, instead. Revolutions Per Minute.

    • @Dave-sw2dm
      @Dave-sw2dm 4 года назад

      @@dalebannon8503 , I totally get that, but you would have said that initially instead of making it sound like the trailer gets heavier all on its own which had me wondering if it absorbed moisture over time.
      I weigh my axle and tongue and calculate my weights every time I change my trailer or the load. I am lucky that there is a public scale close enough to stop by and it is only a few dollars each time.
      Oh, and with two axles the trailer probably has close to a 7000 lb rating.
      I also think you meant measure the front bumper and if it raises then you are getting light in the front end. The best is to weigh the front axle, rear axle, and the trailer axles to determine when you need a weight distributing hitch and what size bars you need to apply the proper load distribution.

It's all electric with AC ( I too live in Citrus County). I use a portable generator and 12V battery system, pretty much self-contain for what I use it for. This would be an amazing solution for the homeless! They've build a tiny home "village" in my city but guess what? They've left out a toilet and so, even traumatized females have to use a communal toilet building in the middle. Splendid job, wishing you and your wife happy travels. She must be so proud of your cottage 😀

    I ditto the folks commenting on how simple and functional this build is. I am trying to figure out how to do a conversion with an enclosed trailer large enough for 2 separate sleeping areas, and still be light enough for a 5k max tow vehicle. This video gave me some great ideas for keeping the weight light. Love the idea of grooving the plywood. I wonder how it would look with some very light/white stain!! (not that the wood looks bad, I just like lighter stain on amber colored wood!) Very nicely done.
