- Hey guys so I've had the D500 for about 5 months now. It's been tough to fit a review in about this camera between client jobs and also reviewing other things (mainly Fuji) Please don't judge this cameras ability to shoot sports & Wildlife based off my Images. I'm not a sports and wildlife shooter haha. Thanks for watching!

Your real world experience with this camera makes for a much more valid review compared to some of these other guys that use it around the house for a couple days and post their review. Nice job. Much appreciated.
Finally! A review on this camera that I needed. Great job. Best real world RUclips review of the d500 thus far.
Fantastic review. Through, and the production quality is beyond any other review of the camera. I have the camera and you pointed out all the strengths and weaknesses of the camera.
Zed....first time I have watched one of your reviews. I tip my hat to you for your honesty and knowledge in commenting on the D500. You were thorough without wasting time to be a comedian or building your ego. Very well done! I have subscribed to your reviews.
Best real world review I have seen for this camera. Exactly what i was looking for. Thanks.
Watched a lot of reviews on this camera and just in general, this is one of the best. Subscribed!
Just bought one for myself...not a professional photographer just an avid amateur...I’ve watched countless videos and yours is the best!
Thanks
I love your approach to reviewing this camera after months of testing and shooting with it.
Thanks! Yeah it's tough to find time to set stuff up for during paid jobs. These were just a few scenarios where it was a low pressure environment and could set it up "behind the scenes" for review purposes.
Excellent, been looking to get this camera. Your review of it was the most concise and informative real world. Thanks.
Brilliant review! Good that you took time to actually work with The camera before reviewing, thanks.
Good review, preferable to the type you mentioned in the intro. I have a D500 + Nikkor 300mm f4 PF VR + Nikon 1.4 TC 111 specifically for wildlife and it is brilliant. I used to have a Canon 7D mark 11 + Canon 100 - 400 f4.5/5.6L IS 11 and I thought that was good; but the D500 is even better. It is incredible for birds and dragonflies in flight as well as close up images of insects. I took some shots of Common Darter dragonflies in flight at 1/2000th, f8 and ISO 3600 at a distance of about 2 metres or so and was really surprised at the clean and detailed images. I am looking forward to your review of the XT-2.
Thank you!!!! I'm thinking really to get one after this video!
Great video Lee. Very spot on evaluation of majority of features, which I can review 7 yrs later. I recently got this body and am getting inot its functions. Please consider mentioning the firmware level when you make reviews, so there is perspective later on as to the updated capabilities.
Good job man!You earn my subscription and you make me want to choose fuji xt2 over d500!
Keep up the good work!
Great review and lovely shots of the model with the Oldsmobile. Swapping my D810 for a D500 in 2 days.
Very str8 no frills review. I was hoping to see more on its features and capabilities on sports/wildlife which is why most ppl are looking for from this camera. I do have to agree that no experienced Nikon shooters would use 3D for soccer or most sports. I will usually use the dynamic area mode. Still...thumbs up for this review !
Excellent review, one of the best I've seen.
Thaanks Zed for your review, It has convinced to possibly Buy the Camera. I really enjoyed your review. again I want to thank you for a really good review.
Best D500 review i've seen so far.
Nice job with the review, I've subscribed! Thanks for sharing what you do.
cheers.
Nice review. I like the casual style, but you still cover all the important points. Thx.
So this is the first time I've watched one of your videos. I was very impressed with your relaxed delivery. Very often I watch videos and I get bored halfway through and stop watching them however yours kept me interested right to the end. I wonder if Apple will ever do anything right with that snap bridge program. Seems like it would be a great future. I know my Sony cameras work flawlessly with their applications I think it's called memories or something like that. Anyway, best compliment I can give you was I hit the subscribe button. Really really enjoyed the video. Thanks for your time and thanks for sharing.
Thanks a lot I appreciate it.
Really down to earth review, Thanks!
Thanks first time I have seen you .Nice show and review. I am getting this camera fast focusing abilities.
Best review i've seen. Thank you
Fab review, thanks for sharing!
Good review, i do enjoy camera but agree, i also have problems with Snap Bridge
The images captured with the car my goodness 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🥰😍 I work with a d500 too. Awesome camera but still need something more ✍🏽 thank you for doing a genuine review. PS the wedding shoot too. Fantastic! ✍🏽
I own one and it's my favorite. Ideal for wildlife with goods lens it's just amazing. A baby D5
nice review as always !
Thank u for the review have the D500 and love it, usually shoot with the Nikkor 17-55mm 2.8 lens
Sorry if this was already answered way down in the comments, but how do you compare this camera to your Fuji's? Do they have different niches in your work? DSLR for work and Fuji for play? Just curious, as both are APS-C
Hands down the best review man!!! Will be interesting a comparison between the D500 vs your XPRO 2 or the XT2!!!
I want to do a shootout between the D500, XT2, and A6300 "2016's fastest aps-c camera slam down" haha (af tracking, 4k video, lowlight etc)
yeah please do that! Looking forward to that video !
Great review!
Thanks man. You would have done a better review of it when it comes to sports. I feel like I failed real big there. Not the most impressive shots but at least I tried :P
I had a brief go at one last week and it really feels right in the hand.
Your review is fair and detailed, also makes be want to stay with my D7100 for now.
Yip, this camera has been hyped up so much. From what I see here, the AF is not as great as it's made out to be & it's not the 1st time I have heard that.
You mentioned that you " some sports shooters might think that you "don't know what you're doing", and I think this illustrates why your review is good. A super-experienced sports shooter would have the advantage of knowing the sport, being able to anticipate moves, etc.. So, in my opinion, your test in this scenario is totally valid, because you're technique means that you're probably pushing the camera's inherent capabilities more than the pro would. Interesting.
And... I'm interested to hear whatever you said after the "Grandpa... Weird nap" comment, that was cut out. :)
(I'm new to your channel, but really like it. Thank you!)
ืbest review for d500 I ever watch Thank!
Great video! Probably the most informative about the D500 I've seen yet. I've been on the fence about getting it for what I do but you've sold me since I want to get more into action photography. I was worried about how it performs with portraiture but your modeling shots look amazing and I'm definitely satisfied with the image quality that it produced.
What lens/lighting set up were you using for those modeling shoots in the car?
Subbed and Liked! :)
Yeah you dont need to worry about it being good for portraiture. Just cuz its aimed at sports and wildlife doesn't mean anything. Honestly its better. That way you can take the camera anywhere and do anything with it! It obviously lacks in the megapixels for high detail and doesnt have the crazy shallow depth of field as a FF. But It doesn't bother me that much. I rocked a canon 5dmkii for years. The lighting I was using was just a small LED for hair/catch light. And I had an off camera speedlight in a wescott raipid box (beauty dish) Thanks for watching.
I love your review! I'm curious, what lenses were you using for the outdoor car shoot? Were you shooting with a prime?
Thank you for the review
Congratulations, this is one of the best reviews of RUclips! You convinced me to buy it! Only two questions: have you ever tried the D500 with Nikkor 17-55 f2.8 and Tokina 11-16 f2.8? What lens have you used for the shooting of the model in the old car? Many thanks!
The lens I used with the model in the car was the Sigma 18-35 f1.8. I've owned the tokina 11-16 2.8 for canon and its a great wide angle lens. Noisy auto focus though. I have never used the nikkor 17-55 but I have used the 10-24mm F3.5-4.5 (its a nice lens)
Hello. I'm saving to buy a Nikon D500 in the next 2 months. I wanted to know how do you like the camera when it comes to using it with no external flashes. Particularly for portraits and candids
Can the screen flip and tilt for selfie and vlogging?
What do you recomend for video in case of SLR and lences?
This is the best review I have ever seen! Thank you so much!
Also, do you think the autofocus in video mode is good enough for sit down talk videos?
It's iffy, It likes to hunt around for no reason. It would be best to manually focus on your target and then hit record. You might luck out if its lit really well and the subject doesn't move around much.
Thank you!
Really appreciate your feedback on the system. Overall, definitely great to use and I look forward to getting 1.
I face similar issue with the Nikon DX D5500 on live view, where the autofocus is rather slow. Guess its a Nikon thing?
The 70-200 2.8 you used for the soccer was it a G2?
Excellent work
great review thank you
The most complete and in-depth review that I've found! thanks a lot. Do you actually recommend it for shooting vid??? like a short movie in this case?? cheers !
Ran Camacho if you're ok with the crop factor in 4k and doing manual focus it would be ok. But the camera is an amazing photo camera more than it is a video cam
What camera do you find yourself reaching for when taking portrait photography? I'm trying to get a pro camera for portraiture, but have no idea what to choose. I thought this might be pretty good.
Jazz Penaa currently I usually take my Xpro2 and xt2 to a portrait session. But those are the two cameras I'm shooting with right now. I would choose the d500 if I needed the speed or shooting in lowlight
excellent video thinking about getting it
Best D500 review I've seen yet thanks for taking your time, BUT I WOULD LOVE TO SEE like just something short about pairing the d500 with the sigma 18-35 i plan on making that my everyday set up
All the shots I did with the girl and the old car was with the sigma 18-35 1.8 . It's a great combo
+Zed ProMedia I've been really interested in this lens on the D500, but I keep reading that there are problems misfocusing with the wider af points. Have you found this to be the case?
Great review btw, thanks for dojng it!
I never had a problem with it and if you did. You can always use the dock to calibrate it or even use the feature called AF fine tune in the D500. I might make a video on AF fine tune. I decided to leave it out of my review to keep it under 30mins.
+Zed ProMedia ok great thanks for the feedback!! Really helps. Id also appreciate a video on the in camera af fine tune if you decide to make it. Thanks again
Very Honest review, Have seen a lot of sports photography shot from the D500, They looked Awesome, Perhaps your settings on manual mode not up to par, Love this camera also, will be buying one very soon..
Thanks. What were those deflectors / diffusers for the flashes / speedlights ?
Thanks for the review. subscribed.
what other live view features does this have, for photography purpose?
like focus peaking (probably doesn't have it)
does it have live histogram in live view? for stills?
does it have zebras in live view for photography?
what other live view features or other useful features does it have for me to assist in landscapes, stills & macros.
does it have any sort of shutter, aperture of focus bracketing? I mean the way Pentax gives lots of assisting tools & live view functionality.
I’ve been shooting mirroless but my hands are huge so I’m going back to DSLR, is the Nikkor 84 f1.4 good? I know the focal length will change, which I’m ok w it. Thanks
JC Lamus the aperture will change as well (f2.1)
This is the best review Ive seen of the D500. Real world situations, not only boring specs. Apart from that I have one question. Does the 'pro' viewfinder seem like a full frame or is like a small APS-C? I would like to upgrade from the old D3200 that I had when I was 13 and the viewfinder is so small and narrow. I guess that the one on the D500 is much better... Man, this is my dream camera hahahhaa
Greetings from Madrid and sorry for my English, is not my mother tongue hahaha. Have a nice day.
help me..!
Nikon d500 vs d4 vs d4s which is better for wildlife
what lens did you use for those shots in the video
D500 vs. D810....which one to buy for an all around shooter?
Hey Zed, What do you recommend for 4K video? My budget is under £2000
Shark the GH5
Wow, I thanks Dude! i did my research well. I put the Panasonic GH5 top of my list!
Great review is there a DSLR 4 k video camera you really like before I commit to buying this one thanks
You say this dosn't have the features for video, so what is it missing? and which camera around the same price point is better. Cheers.
The 4k video image quality is amazing! The 1080p quality is amazing. It just lacks some features like focus peaking, log profiles, af in video is awful and for the life of me there is no way to use the light meter in video. It just goes away and you have to set the light meter in photo live view first and then switch to video.
Zed ProMedia important features those. thanks
Fuji X-T2 100% BETTER
Tom Gee fuji xt2 better for video? Haha you must be joking..slow mo? NO..IBIS? NO..Touch to focus?NO..Flat picture profile? NO. You just hoping in on the bandwagon
I'd recommend the gh5 if your leaning more towards video than photography.
Thanks for the review.
I sometimes have problems with my 7200 WiFi on the camera, I find if I'm at home the home WiFi will over rule the camera maybe because it's got more power??? But if I switch off home WiFi it's not normally as bad
So which camera You recommended for video?
Hello bro,,,, is this camera for wedding photography and portrait?
Very nice and honest review of Nikon D500. Snapbridge is just too cumbersome to use.I think in order to download pics you should use quality RAW+JPEG or JPEG. Despite that, D500 is an awesome camera.
When you shoot video, everything by nature is supposed to be in focus, therefore if you set that ahead of time in manual, you won't have focus issues. Video doesn't require depth of field requirements unless you are doing a music video. But the context of video used for set up shots, that's all manual. Therefore, the argument about how it changes focus in video is redundant.
Very good video. Grade A. Thank you!
Hey Zed ProMedia what camera do you recommend for shooting video over the d500? For shooting in live view?
I don't recommend Sony but they do a great job with video. A7rii and the a6300 are a good combo. The a7sii has great image quality but the af in video isn't good. And then there's the overpriced Canon 5dmk4. I don't use m4/3 but the new Panasonic gx85 looks promising.
Yes, How id the d500 in comparison to the a6300 and A7rII?
as far as image quality? Very similar except that you get slog with a7rii and a6300. You can get much more dynamic range with it. As for AF in video the A6300 the best out of the 3.
so did you use a tamron 70 200???? could that be the problem. ?
Oh and great review by the way. Better than any other I have seen. Real world experience and samples. The bookshelf pics and squirrel photos get tiring.
Thanks I appreciate it. I understand why people review that way. It's because it's a controlled environment and easy to setup yourself. These videos actually take quite a bit of work to make when you are only one guy. Main reason when I was doing focus tests for liveview I just had a cup on my counter. I don't want to waste a clients time by asking them if I can setup a focus test during their shoot haha! Anyway thanks for watching.
That 4K time lapse is a neat feature. I wish my Fuji cameras offered it. Even HD time lapse in general. The Fuji X-T1 has an intervalometer built in, but I like this Nikon and many LUMIX cameras it doesn't compile it into a video. A shame.
Yeah its a really cool feature to have if you do time lapses often. Obviously you get more resolution out of a regular time lapse and can do cool things like do slow pan or zoom in and still keep it at 4k, Its just more time consuming.
thanks for the review.
Thanks great review helps me !!
I don't know anything about cameras so please forgive me but I wanted to ask a question
Is it a good enough camera out of the box without buying any lens for an amateur like me?
Too complicated... Get a D5600 or D7200 (On sale now)
What lenses did you use with this camera please?
This is a great video as I am looking towards buying a D500. I was watching another video about the sharing of photos directly to your phone and it said that you have to select a form of JPEG for it to show up on your phone. They chose RAW + JPEG. I don't know if phones can read NEF format.
I want to upgrade from my current DX nikon camera to full frame. Should I consider the Sony a7Sii?
That's a strange question on a video like this haha. For video? I wouldn't recommend the a7sii for photography.
Thank you, and nice work
very good review
Nice review
I like your time lapse video.
I'll try it out.
what camera did you use to film this video?
Sony A6300 and iPhone 6S
Note that snapbridge only downloads jpg files. RAW has to be downloaded from camera by USB cable.
Good video I agree with most of your review. As for the Snapbridge instructions are minimal. On my Android it connected and worked fine. I think it worked similar to my GoPro so I probably found it easy for that reason. Overall though great review. Thanks
They came out with an update. I'm gonna make a video just on SnapBridge
Okay thanks. BTW I noticed when I first used Snapbridge I had it set for transfer even when camera was off. That seemed to eat up the battery. Later I don't recall how I did it I set it to transfer only when camera on. That really extended battery life.
I just got mine...you're dead on your review but I still like it a lot...thanks for sharing.
Very thorough review on D500, probably the bets one, thanks for sharing!!
I love my Nikon D500. Feels perfect in my hands and very intuitive ability to change settings on the fly. Joy stick for focal point is fantastic. Overall love the camera and its image quality. Not my fav for video and cropping makes for too much zoom.
How much it was?
Noob question but how do you get rid of glare and reflections on the shots you did with the car. Great review by the way looking at getting this camera when I get better.
Oshi polarizing filter on the lens :)
Zed ProMedia cheers looks like I'll invest in one of them then. Thanks again.
do you still have this camera
Worthy of a 👍🏽 and 🤜🏼
Why is my 4k video footage jittering when I shoot with my 35mm Nikon prime lens
what lense did you used in the portrait session ?
Sigma 18-35 f1.8 ART
Great review!
so you dont recommend using this camra for portraits?
thanks.
Leo
You can use it for anything! It's great multi use camera. It's just aimed at sports and wildlife because of the fast autofocus and continuous burst. The main reason why I wouldn't recommend it (if all you do is portraits) is because it is only 20mp compared to all the other options 24mp +
Thanks so much for your help. I do portraits and weddings, i really need fast focus for the weedigs, but i do need higher megapixels then 20 as i have on the D500 for the portraits. I was waiting the next gen of the 810, but didnt come out.
Cheers from Brazil!!
Leonardo Lacerda you don't need more than 20mp for portraits. People were shooting with the 12 mp D3 for years with great results. A FX body will give you more DOF. That's why most pros like full frame.
pixel peepers....
I have read that there is an green-stick in all pictures from Nikon’s cameras. When they compared it with Canon it became obvious. When a Swedish photo magazine tested D4s they wrote about it in the minus column.
You earn a sub! you saved my money
