Invader Zim is a classic Nickeloden cartoon made by Jhonen Vasquez with clasic characters kuje Gir, Dib, Gaz. with the new netflix movie Enter the Florpus coming back we decided at Spilling The Milk to rewatched the first couple episodes and react to them in our funny commentary reaction series to see if its weirder than we remember.

Watch Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus
I always liked the concept of Invader Zim. Zim is the alien, but he's the protagonist, so from his perspective, the humans are the weird aliens
Yeh, especially with how weird they all seem to be.
@@sketch-eee4165 I mean Zim was already weirder than the aliens themselves
@@sketch-eee4165 Theory: They're actually normal people warped by both our alien protagonist and Dunning-Kruger Jr's PoV
I mean its not far off from what youd see on the streets of American cities and towns.
One thing I've grown to love about Invader Zim is that, while being a children's program, it is always committed to the idea that Zim, although the protagonist, is unambiguously still the villain. He doesn't go through a redemption arc in which he turns good (temporarily or permanently), and the show doesn't cheat by making everyone else assholes to make him more likable in comparison (basically making him a good guy with extra steps). He is evil and is attempting to take over the world. We root for him not because he's likable or "deserves" to win, but because he's an underdog who is plainly working hard to attain his goal but is always doomed by bad luck and his own arrogance.
Nickelodeon in 1992: We can't release the Man's best friend episode from Ren and Stimpy, it's too violent!
Nickelodeon in 2001: An alien stealing organs from children? Yeah that's alright.
Nickelodeon in 2021: Let's remove Mid Life Crustacean because of panty raid
Ong Zim didn’t even sell the organs, just ate them on a silver platter
Wasn’t that episode the one that got the show canceled after a murderer used it as inspiration? this is not a joke, look up Scott Dyleski
“people _these days_ are so sensitive”
Nickelodeon:
Tbf, I was actually terrified of Ren and Stimpy compared to Invader Zim
We’re not even at the episode where Zim steals kids organs… or goes back in time to cripple Dib. This show’s insane
Ripped out a kids eyes and blew him up.
Zim is THE most based person ever
not just cripple, my guy actually managed to kill dib
@odetoclear In what episode?

The lore for Invader Zim is crazy. The "Bracelets" are part of the series of implants to make the "Tallest/s" taller. Hierarchy in Irken culture is wholly dependent on height.
More like higherarchy
@@relaxation_and_tax_evasion *ba dum tissssss* 😂

Fun fact: The creator of Steven universe was obsessed with this show, and even wrote fan fiction of it.
That honestly explains a lot
Yeah, and Peridot is a somewhat expy of Zim.

@RaisonLychi
Oh someone who notices Zim's fade. I'm embarrassed to say I noticed that around five months ago or so after being a fan of this series for twenty two years.
😞
Something that funny to think about: Zim technically does his job perfectly. He’s just supposed to gather info about Earth. Anything else he does his just him getting overambitious.
His job actually is to conquer the planet and enslave the humans, so the Irkens can have control over it
Well that technically isn’t job cuz he was sent to earth simply because everyone hated him

This show and Gir was responsible for so many Goth girls moving forward. This show is truly revolutionary
Holy shit youre right. Thanks gir for tig bitty golf goirls.
Eh id say more emo and scene than goth. Still so true tho, this show is iconic
As soon as I saw Gir I was like oh NOW I get it
There was an emo girl in my school with a Gir onesie, so yeah
@@XemeraldXD emo is a music genre and anything that derives from it, it's not emo otherwise.
I just need people to know that zim is like over 160 human years old (16 in irken years) and is beefing with a 12 year old AND LOSING
HES 16?????
The whole saying that Zim is 16 in human years is plain stupid
He's over 160, older than any living human alive. young for an Irken yes, but at the same time he's neither a teen nor an adolescent, dude literally has a job.
@@Nobody-707 No, that's a headcanon some fan came up with forever ago. But you know how fandoms take these kinds of unverified "facts" and rumors that sound like they *could* possibly be true and just run with them sometimes, then before you know it it's just something people uncritically accept as gospel. But no, there's no such thing in the IZ canon as "Irken years," and Zim isn't 16.
For the record, Jhonen Vasquez, the creator of the series *has* stated that Zim is, in fact, an adult and "older than any living human," though he's never verified his exact age. He has refered to Zim as "an old man" before, but 1. Old to who? Humans? Or Irkens? And 2. Jhonen is notorious for trolling his fans and frequently making contradictory or jokey statements about the series on his Twitter and IG, so you can never be too certain when he's being serious, but he's never gone back on his statement about Zim's adult status so most fans I know are inclined to believe him on that one, at least.
@plaguegirl7451
Zim is 16 in Irkenyears at the height of roughly 4'11/5'0? Get out.
????
aint he in his 40's in irken years???
just letting you know without spoilers, the next batch has one of the most horrifying episodes that this show ever aired
MOOOOoooooooooo
MOOOOOOOOOO
I swear, Dib is the only self aware character in the show
Gaz too
And definitely Gir too, he’s the best character.
Gaz is even more self aware than her brother! She knows Zim is an alien invader, but she also knows Zim’s so incompetent, he really isn’t a threat to humanity
Dib is not self aware. He is cringe and everyone (in the show) knows
Nah, Dib's just a different kind of dumb. He's like if Don Quixote had no charm or dough. Lil dude's convinced he's Guts and Zim is Griffith. Meanwhile Gaz sees that Zim's foiling his own plans better than Dib could.
@@ischeele7203 you just described it perfectly
@@ischeele7203 dib sees himself as guts and zim as Griffith, gaz sees them both as a really good looney tunes episode
How did we go from canceling Invader Zim to letting children watch tiktok unregulated, we doomed bro.
Not even the Irkens are this devious to torture humanity
Doom d0om DOOM, doom-doom duom doom doom, Doom doom do0m
I mean, they brought it back with a movie
We doom doom doodoo doomed
Zim was canceled, yes, but because it was way too expensive to make (I mean just look at all the detail in any given scene, how many background changes and weird shots they had to create, not to mention the actually good looking early 2000's kid's show CGI that was frequently used; you can see the money all over the screen) and wasn't popular enough among the intended target demographic that Nick wanted, not because it was too violent, or dumb , or rotting kids' minds, or anything like that.
I *do* agree we doomed tho bro, fr.
People When They Hear Others Say That Invader Zim Isn’t Dark: “LIIIIIIIIEEEESSS!!!”
Always saw this as one of Nickelodeon’s darkest projects. Surprised how much went through.
Compare to other curse shows back then. Invader Zim wasn't consider Dark for people.
@@Underground3 it wasn't overly violent like Ren and stimpy but man Dark Harvest really is siomething else....also Keef's getting his eyes yeeted out of his head
@@ironmaster6496 I will still say Courage the Cowardly Dog is up there when it come to dark shows without being as blatantly violent. The messages within certain episodes are "something else" or really damn creepy..
@@Underground3
I'd say Courage The Cowardly and Zim are apples and oranges. Zim tended to have a twisted humor, while Courage had stuff that scared the crap out of kids.
I still think about how the creator wanted to kill off one of the kids _(you might know the one),_ but Nickelodeon drew the line at that.
I was a kid when this show was airing and I loved every minute of it. Let dem kids be traumatized; This shit needs to come back
Facts bro
That one scene from Mexico looked so much calmer and peaceful than where Zim was before.
That ending where the kid falls off the roof made me realize this show was more morbid then just the Dark Harvest episode
Bro the kid has his eyeballs ripped out to make him lose sight of reality, show is so fucked, lol
He's still alive tho
Necessary backstory for the creator Jonan Vasquez. He had published a comic series before Nick approached him asking for a pitch. That comic was JTHM, Jonny The Homicidal Maniac. It follows a crazed murderer as as he uncovers the secrets buried in the Manson murder house that he moved into. It's incredibly graphic as Jonny runs around killing occasionally contemplating if he's capable of being caught or killed. Nickelodeon looked at that, and asked him for a pitch, thus invader Zim was born in a weekend.
@babygorilla4233
It wasn't JTHM that caught the eye of Nickelodeon execs. but the spin-off Squee.
@@DemonicRemption oh God the spin off about an abused child cought their eye? I'm so glad they did it but also such a question choice 😂
I think we need more kids shows that shocks kids (both mentally and physically)
Physically?
That was a joke…
Yeah we need to traumatize children 😃
Maybe not traumatize but toughen up or let them know about certain things I agree
I don't know about physically, but Infinity Train sure shocked me mentally. It starts off like a "normal kids show," but by season three...
19:38 When she says quarter-circle back that's slang for a combination of inputs in fighting games. The inputs being: down, down back and lastly back. Quarter circle refers to the direction of motion you do with your controller.
Everyone knows that Tatsumaki is your best neutral option against the microbial robot in your brain. Projectile invincible too!
It’s very rare for a show to be better then you remembered but Invader Zim absolutely nailed it
Can we appreciate this show for having humor that’s still hilarious over 20 years later. Truly ahead of it’s time.
Keef didn't die tho, he appears in the background in other episodes and was even gonna have another episode focused on him trying to befriend Zim again (he's obsessed with Zim)
I always felt like Invader Zim was the only “LOL SO RANDOM” show that actually aged well.
I find it hilarious how “high guardian spice” is TV-14 and Invader Zim is like TV-Y7.
12:42 it SHOULD have been on CN, maybe it would’ve lasted longer, along with cool shit like Courage the Cowardly Dog or The Marvelous Adventures of Flapjack. Cartoon Network was full of traumatizing stuff back then, Zim would’ve fitted right in lmao
Not many things are as traumatizing as CN original Live-Action movies, like flapjack.
Makes sense cuz CN is the edgier alternative to Nickelodeon back then.
This was the best show Nickelodeon ever made. I'm really not sure what the execs at Nickelodeon thought they were going to get from the guy who made the comic "Johnny the Homicidal Maniac". Jhonen Vasquez makes a lot of things I really enjoy.
Nick wanted to experiment with a darker show to recapture the magic of Red and Stimpy.
After the enter the Florpus movie, I honestly wish they rebooted this show
Invader Zim was one of my favorite shows growing up- I had every single price of merchandise money could buy (still have and use most of it) and the fact that it's still just as popular brings me so much joy. ): it's so good to see git's face again :))
The Voice of Invader Zim is the same as Razputin of Psychonauts, Billy from Grim Adventures, and Pox from Destroy all Humans.
11:57 That was the most aggressive ice cream man ever...
Typical day in New York
My favorite parts of the video is when they say the show was doing CGI amazingly “in 2005”, even though the first episode was made in 2001
Fun fact: Gaz's VA is also the voice of Neptune from Hyperdimension Neptunia.
Great now i cant fap to nep. Thanks.
Damn. I never would have guessed. That's pretty cool
went from emo gamer human girl, to genki gamer goddess
And Duusu from miraculous ladybug. In the English dub.
And Dendy from ok ko.
One of Nickelodeon's best shows 😊
Fun Fact: Invader Zim takes place in 2023
zim has landed in new mexico!
My mom had the entirety of the show on DVD (Still does somewhere I'm sure) and would put it on if I had friends over at her place (She didn't have cable at the time)
Always enjoyed it!!
Good times
Invader Zim was one of the first cartoons I got to watch properly on cable at my god parents house when I was 10/under. There was a binge of IZ and watch there for a while and watch…. Hours… I remember being basically traumatised afterwards and having nightmares about it constantly but also wanted to see more so badly. I think it’s why I love dark humour now.
Animation for Invader Zim was very costly at the time. Due to that and along with the theme, Nick had always been itching to cancel it every time they found a potential reason.
16:56 the most traumatizing thing in this entire show. I was scarred for life

I hear Billy everytime Zim talks tbh. If you've seen The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, you would understand why.
I'm a Power Rangers fan, so his voice reminds me of Alpha 5.

I guess you know then that Tim Schaffer's a Zim fan?
This show was so unhinged, that's why it was so good.
Invader Zim is a perfect fit for you guys
After cancelation, Invader Zim became a hallmark for the goth subculture. And shit gets crazy as we progress through the series, the episode early on during Season 1 Bestest Friend literally had a kid named Keef's eyes ripped out and replaced by robotic ones! No gore, but damn...
There needs to be another episode of this. I would love for them to get into the later episodes when they "try" to set up more of a plot line

👴👋"How's it going?"Scene was one of .my favorite a scenes in the series 😂😂
10:57 that "no i'm not," has to be in my top 10 fav jack lines/scenes.
I think I somehow stopped enjoying Zim after the Dark Harvest episode traumatized me as a kid, and I didn't even get to watch the whole thing because I was fucking vomiting. In retrospective though, this is way too good, the animation, the penis music, and how unique the fucked up writing is, I love it, please watch more

The opening theme is such an icon wtf you mean?😭😭😭
Funny thing, I did watch Invader Zim a lot as a kid and wasn't bothered by it at all. Meanwhile I saw one clip of the Drawn Together movie and was too scared to watch anything from the series

Real please 😔
The Irken Armada actually has a super brutal invasion strategy-- they travel in one straight line conquering everything they have too; because they dont like turning.
Back when dark humor was practically a genre in children’s animation.
I think if Jhonen had the ability to let the show get more violent and gruesome (Maybe on a differnt network) I think the show would be a lot better then it already is (Invader Zim is awesome) and would probably have a longer run.
The different disguises that Zim flips through includes Jhonen Vasquez, the creator of the show. He's the thin alternative looking guy.
Bro you just watched Helluva Boss, Richard Horvitz is in both shows! Moxxie and Zim!
ngl gir was a revolutionary icon for the scene kids, this series deffo helped shaping a generation
I dunno why, but that one scene with Zim literally ripping Keith’s eyeballs from his face was more disturbing than Zim stealing organs from random kids.
Johnen Vasquez made a dark comedy comic about a serial killer prior to this, of COURSE it would be pretty dark. If you thin this is dark, wait till you see Dark Harvest.
This show made me cry as a kid BADLY
Nick made them put voices after the kids basically died so kids would think they were "ok". XD
As someone who watched invader zim when I was six, I loved every moment of it. Same goes for futurama.
I was a fucked up kid man 💀

I was 8 when I watched Invader Zim and Futurama, I loved both shows, my older brother used to put this on while he was taking care of me and my young siblings while our parents weren't home
@@kawaiiemolga Fun Fact: In the unaired pilot of Zim, he was voiced by Billy West, but he sounded too similar to Dib. He would soon play Fry from Futrurama.

Well Tim Schaffer is a fan of Invader Zim. That's why Raz is voiced by Richard Horvitz who voiced Zim. And it wouldn't surprise me if Schaffer was inspired by Nano-Zim in some of the level design.
Fun fact about the Psychonauts mention: The voice actor for Zim, Steven Horvitz, also voices Raz from Psychonauts.
Originally in the best friend episode, the kid WAS supposed to die, but they made jhonen put in that soundbite at the end because it was already too fucked up that the kid's eyes were ripped out, and they weren't having an actual death in their kid's show. So, the soundbite is supposed to confirm he's alive, but frankly it always came off to me as not really him saying it, like some disembodied voice or just put in there for ~le random~
Idk if it was supposed to be a different death, I just know that scene was meant to kill him
also y'all are babies, this was the bread and butter of so many dumbass kids because it's seriously just very random and goofy. Adults always are acting like it was so heinous but like, this was so beloved by its target audience and wasn't really thought of as freaky except by sheltered kids. That's why they ended up having a revive with comics and the movie. Though frankly, I wish it had stayed this way because I'm not a big fan of how Jhonen has refined his art style.
But just wait until you guys hit the organ stealing episode!
I really want you guys to watch with the commentary, the comments everyone makes good belly laughs
To be honest, when I was 9, I watched this and instead of being scared, I was laughing every second. I honestly have no idea why people find this show so dark. The friend-kid randomly exploding from falling is the funniest shit.
13:16 I just realized... That scientist was also voiced by Richard Horvitz using his Harold voice from Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy.
Im so happy to see this fandom and just people over all watching it, amazing.
I feel like more teens enjoyed this show than kids.
Considering Jhonen is the man responsible for Johnny the homicidal maniac, Zim is totally tame.
3:18 This show likely scarred tons of children
If only Zim learned about other nations and how foreigners could be called "Aliens"
Then he could be all "Yes dib I AM an alien, I come from the foreign nation of Irkan Island. An uncharted advanced island in the ocean."
Saying this in class, possibly doing some cultural thing to force Dib to be in deep trouble, which his father would REQUIRE him to respect.
As I understand it, Invader Zim was originally pitched to Adult Swim, and when they pulled out they managed to dial it back enough to put it on during the day.
This show came out in 2000/2001 and the CGI is still fire.
