MY STRATEGIES: 1. Slow-growth - In the beginning, pour all the money you make back into the business; invest in gear. Grow it debt-free. 2. Second Shoot/Shadow for free or for less than typical rates. See what kind of deals you can work with established photographers. 3. Connect with the community of photographers around you. 4. DO NOT shoot a wedding by yourself until you know you’re ready. TWO CAMERA BODIES! 5. Make a website (not just an instagram account). 6. Once you get clients, knock their socks off with your service. Under-promise and over-deliver. OTHER PEOPLES' STRATEGIES: 1. Advertise on Facebook and Instagram (and Myspace). Target your ads and follow up quickly with leads. 2. Meet with planners and keep up with the relationships you have with them. 3. Set up styled shoots! 4. Take classes/go to workshops/do mentor sessions with experienced photographers. 5. Post all of your content to Pinterest (to all social platforms for goodness sake) 6. Ask your clients for reviews on Google, Facebook, The Knot, Wedding Wire, etc.
"Don't ever, for any reason, (bring one camera body), to any (wedding), for any reason, ever, no matter what, no matter where, or who, or who you are with, or where you are going, or where you've been, ever, for any reason whatsoever." - Michael Scott
Eric, I deeply value and appreciate the work you are putting out online to share your experience as a wedding photographer/filmmaker. The effort you put into these videos is worth it. Sharing your candid moments and true honesty is unbelievably refreshing in this day and age of RUclipsrs. Again, I found you on your 100k a yr video. Already rang the bell before you asked at the end of that mini reel in that vid. Huge ups! Keep crushing it!
I made really good experience with booking google ads, targeted specifically towards woman btw 25 and 35. The ad used words like vintage and boho. I linked it straight to one of my most beautiful wedding posts and I do 90% of my bookings with Google SEA as this is only my second year of shooting weddings. I don't really acquire over Instagram or anything else. Google is very very powerful. Thanks for the great video!
You're one of the first few people I've come across who have actually pointed out the benefits of the gear... I know gear isn't all that matters... Your creativity has to surpass the gear... But the gear makes your life so much easier and it helps so much especially when working with clients! Literally subscribed to your channel as soon as you said that... 😂
Second shoot. Second shoot. Second shoot. That’s the best way to break into the industry. You get to do it. You get to network. That’s the only way to grow, keep doing it. And be nice to everyone so they’ll want to work with you.
Why do you only have 26k?? You deserve more! All these tips just hit every marker. Thank you so much for sharing and I wish all the best! I’m also a wedding photographer I really do need to make my website and stop relying so much on social media. Also, reaching out to other wedding vendors is a great idea! Thank you so much!
Honestly Eric this is the most helpful 'how to ...' video I've ever seen. Really looking forward each time you release new content, you're funny, fluent and make relatable and great content!
Thanks so much man I stumble into your video. It is in my head that probably soon I'm gonna start a photography business mainly lifestyle(weddings, birthdays, newborn, and etc.). Definitely took note all of the points.
I haven't even finished watching this video but I wanted to say thank you so much. You are straight to the point and give extremely helpful tips that I will be using from now on!
Hey man I know you posted this a year ago but im curious, how did that first wedding you were 2nd shooting go? I have yet to 2nd shoot but I'm looking forward to it!
G T it went amazing, managed to get some killer photos, starting booking my own weddings off that single wedding. The guy helped me network a bit and get to know some people and now I’m the associate of the best guy in my country! www.rickybaillie.com
This video is awesome! I really like (love, not in a weird way) your content. My wife is a wedding photographer and she has been growing slowly, and her business is really starting to pick up. I am trying to follow in her footsteps/learning by myself to surprise her and maybe eventually join her on weddings! Thank you for posting such great content.
Oh how cool that would be an awesome surprise!!! I hope you learn and enjoy! I would love to see your progress that would be an amazing journey and reveal to watch!!
Amen to having a website. I tried reaching out to an incredible wedding photographer so I could do some video work for her. We talked a bit, then she asked if I had a website, and I told gave her my facebook videos page. Really dried up the conversation. She liked my wedding video on Instagram....but just because I don't have a site, she wouldn't take me seriously lmfao. So yes, get a website. Starting on one today
I love this video! My first few weddings, I spent every bit of money on gear for a year. This just caused me to get more gigs because people took me more seriously. Not only that, but I learned a lot about how to master equipment very quickly. Once again, great video Eric!
Great video as always. One of the things that I haven't found an answer for yet, is what to wear to a wedding (as a photographer). I find it hard to judge the line between being smart enough and practicality. If you fancy commenting on this in one of your videos then that would be awesome!
Dude just dropped my new mixtape on MySpace. You can use it at your next shoot. Very helpful video bro. Thanks again for All the advice! Cheers from Barcelona 🌞
Super good viddy :D Those are some real tips for the real world and no BS. I appreciate that in these times of "become successful in 3 quick steps"- videos.. :)
Ok this is something I haven’t seen anyone else mention. I could have missed it somewhere, but in shooting wedding films, how do you deliver the film to the client? Not the highlight film like the masterpieces you have posted but like the 30 min+ film? Do you burn a dvd or Blu-ray? If so, what do you use to burn it? Or just digital? If this is the case, what platform do you send it on?
Super fun video as always! Thinking back on my first projects makes me cringe 😖 But we are always continuously learning and the only way to get better is to go out and shoot! Cheers to living the dream and pursuing our passions 🥂📷🎥🌟
did you just say MySpace? haha I think we know how old you are now Eric... Because I still think about MySpace when I hear the world "social media" hahahaha
Thanks for the tips! I would love to know the first few pieces of gear you bought when you were starting out. Nowadays it's easy to get caught up in gear lust and when you're starting out you really don't know what you're gonna need in most situations.
I know this is an old video, but i really want to see that rap video at 2:00.... soo can you put it on your patreon. By the way if you are new to his channel the content on his patreon is FIRE!!!
I'm also in Chicago and looking to partner up now with experienced wedding photographers to second shoot with them because I would like to start shooting them.
People love to say "gear doesn't matter", but no one shoots weddings with polaroid cameras. Gear definitely matters. Its just that gear isn't as important as skill and knowledge.
Question, what memory cards do you use to record 4K on the 5D mark IV? I have a good card but it only records for 3 seconds, I did formatting and all that jazz. Can’t seem to get it to work.
Just curious, how do you manage to film and photograph the same event? Do you have a second shooter? Or do you only do one aspect per event? I'm curious about the organisational stuff for that

Yes, having a Website is extremely important. And have it responsive not just a clunky website.
UNDER PROMISE, OVER DELIVER

I totally agree! The advice I got here is really what I can use in the future. This guy is not playing words haha! Thanks, Eric.
I don't know what I love more - your charisma or the tips.
Great tips...and I loved the "cold call" in the beginning!

If you were truly looking to get into photography where would you start investing camera body wise in 2019?
what lens was 0:52 shot with, the couple kissing with the white background?
I believe that was the Canon 35mmL mark i
People love to say "gear doesn't matter", but no one shoots weddings with polaroid cameras. Gear definitely matters. Its just that gear isn't as important as skill and knowledge.
Dude, first off awesome video. Second, where can I get that chair you were sitting on? I want one for my photo studio! Thanks in advance :)
Question, what memory cards do you use to record 4K on the 5D mark IV? I have a good card but it only records for 3 seconds, I did formatting and all that jazz. Can’t seem to get it to work.
